I've tried. 00:01:00.119 --> 00:01:04.259 I couldn't listen to them all, but I've tried to listen to one or two of the sermons already 00:01:04.259 --> 00:01:07.479 because I think you've had a little gap and you've just picked it up again. 00:01:07.759 --> 00:01:14.079 And the thing that struck me when I was listening was one sermon where John was explaining the fact 00:01:14.079 --> 00:01:19.340 that it's not just about the great escape because that's only the start of the journey. 00:01:20.079 --> 00:01:25.900 And however important that is, the second half is as important. It's about getting to safety. 00:01:26.480 --> 00:01:32.599 And I think in that context, you'll and we'll together hopefully will understand what is happening here 00:01:32.599 --> 00:01:37.060 in this exchange between a father-in-law and his son-in-law. 00:01:37.060 --> 00:01:46.140 I mean, a beautiful picture of an elderly person, not, you know, sorry, a person older than, you know, 00:01:46.180 --> 00:01:52.079 passing advice on to the younger. And how beautiful would that not be if this is a community where that happens, 00:01:52.400 --> 00:01:58.320 both where the youngers are willing to take advice from some of the older men and women 00:01:58.320 --> 00:02:01.980 who have a little bit more live experience and wisdom in that sense, 00:02:01.980 --> 00:02:07.859 but also vice versa, that you who have been around for longer will not shy away, 00:02:08.020 --> 00:02:12.539 but with grace explain the ways and the paths of God. 00:02:13.060 --> 00:02:15.099 But let's look at this passage together. 00:02:15.560 --> 00:02:19.199 Really what we've had so far in Exodus has been a roller coaster. 00:02:19.800 --> 00:02:24.539 And what struck me about this picture in this chapter is that it's peculiarly mundane. 00:02:25.939 --> 00:02:27.680 There's nothing exciting happening. 00:02:28.340 --> 00:02:31.620 There's no seas splitting. There's no water coming out of a rock. 00:02:31.979 --> 00:02:35.419 There's none of that, but there's Moses at his work. 00:02:36.799 --> 00:02:38.639 We read in verse 13, 00:02:39.159 --> 00:02:42.780 The next day Moses took a seat to serve as judge for the people, 00:02:43.139 --> 00:02:45.439 and they stood around him from morning till evening. 00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:49.459 This is like a day in the life of Moses, a day in the office. 00:02:50.239 --> 00:02:55.019 And I wonder how Moses felt about this part, this side of his responsibility. 00:02:55.020 --> 00:02:59.780 I think every job has a side that we're not always that keen on. 00:03:00.320 --> 00:03:01.760 Maybe it's the administration. 00:03:02.080 --> 00:03:04.620 You'd rather be out there with the people, or maybe More grumbling, more complaints. 00:03:22.680 --> 00:03:23.939 How am I going to deal with these people? 00:03:24.400 --> 00:03:30.620 There certainly is a sense that Moses, however he felt about it, is starting to grow weary. 00:03:30.620 --> 00:03:36.439 Interestingly, though, it reminded me of the fact that actually there used to be a time 00:03:36.439 --> 00:03:40.219 that people could visit the White House in Washington. 00:03:41.140 --> 00:03:44.480 This was stopped way before the Second World War, 00:03:44.640 --> 00:03:47.939 but the president, as the representative of the people, 00:03:48.360 --> 00:03:50.400 would have opened up, quite often on a Friday, 00:03:50.719 --> 00:03:55.759 the White House for anyone to queue up to seek wisdom or advice straight from the president. 00:03:55.800 --> 00:03:56.939 Can you imagine that now? 00:03:58.000 --> 00:03:59.460 But that's the picture we get now. 00:03:59.460 --> 00:04:01.360 People queuing to see Moses. 00:04:04.020 --> 00:04:07.800 Now, a lot of people have wondered what this chapter can teach us today. 00:04:08.939 --> 00:04:13.340 A lot of people seem to think this has lots of lessons on leadership. 00:04:14.840 --> 00:04:20.160 Others get the impression that maybe this is the start of a court system, 00:04:20.259 --> 00:04:23.060 where you have a high court and a smaller court, 00:04:23.460 --> 00:04:25.240 and that helps to spread the load. 00:04:25.240 --> 00:04:31.780 Well, this morning I want to borrow some words from an Old Testament expert called Alec Moutier, 00:04:31.879 --> 00:04:33.439 who wrote a commentary on this, 00:04:33.980 --> 00:04:38.460 to help us understand maybe what is underlying all of that is happening in this chapter. 00:04:39.000 --> 00:04:39.860 This is what he says. 00:04:39.920 --> 00:04:40.300 He says, 00:04:40.300 --> 00:04:46.500 The whole tone of verse 13 to 27 sounds administrative and legalistic, 00:04:47.079 --> 00:04:49.879 but leaving it at this level is missing the point. 00:04:50.680 --> 00:04:56.960 It's not an account of the setting up of a lower and higher courts and even a Supreme Court as such, 00:04:56.959 --> 00:05:07.319 but of making arrangements whereby the word of God was made available right down to the smallest group, 00:05:07.959 --> 00:05:08.680 the extended family, 00:05:09.599 --> 00:05:13.779 so that daily life could be ordered according to the will of God. 00:05:15.839 --> 00:05:22.279 Alec Moutier believes that this is all about arranging that the word of God would reach down to everybody, 00:05:22.279 --> 00:05:26.199 even the smallest child in the extended family. 00:05:26.799 --> 00:05:27.519 Isn't that interesting? 00:05:28.319 --> 00:05:33.259 And for this word of God then to be what would lead and guide the people of God 00:05:33.259 --> 00:05:36.239 and mold and shape them into being the people of God. 00:05:37.559 --> 00:05:41.579 One thing that might help and why he comes to this conclusion is if we look at the wording. 00:05:42.159 --> 00:05:43.359 Look with me to verse 16. 00:05:43.479 --> 00:05:44.219 It's not on the slide, 00:05:44.219 --> 00:05:45.099 but verse 16, 00:05:45.479 --> 00:05:52.099 we read there that Moses sees his own role as informing the people of God's decrees and laws. 00:05:52.279 --> 00:05:53.500 Or in other translations, 00:05:53.719 --> 00:05:55.859 it might say statues of God. 00:05:56.599 --> 00:05:58.459 That comes back in verse 20, 00:05:58.639 --> 00:06:02.779 where his role is seen as showing them the way to live. 00:06:04.319 --> 00:06:05.179 Now these words, 00:06:05.539 --> 00:06:06.219 statutes, 00:06:06.839 --> 00:06:07.359 decrees, 00:06:07.500 --> 00:06:07.759 law, 00:06:07.979 --> 00:06:10.339 that's kind of Torah language. 00:06:12.259 --> 00:06:15.259 Torah being the first five books of Moses, 00:06:15.259 --> 00:06:23.319 which was never meant in the mind of a Jew as being exclusively about rules and laws or the Ten Commandments, 00:06:23.420 --> 00:06:27.420 but very much about the known word of God at that time. 00:06:27.420 --> 00:06:31.379 How we know that is by reading, 00:06:31.460 --> 00:06:31.879 for example, 00:06:32.020 --> 00:06:33.280 Psalm 119. 00:06:34.240 --> 00:06:34.680 Unfortunately, 00:06:34.860 --> 00:06:37.040 it doesn't get read very often because it's so long, 00:06:37.259 --> 00:06:41.960 but it's one of the most beautiful Psalms that praises God simply for his word, 00:06:42.340 --> 00:06:43.060 his word. 00:06:43.100 --> 00:06:45.280 And we have the word in its all completeness, 00:06:46.020 --> 00:06:47.220 including the New Testament, 00:06:47.220 --> 00:06:50.980 which explains to us who the person of Jesus Christ is. 00:06:50.980 --> 00:06:52.620 We are incredibly rich. 00:06:54.500 --> 00:06:57.040 And Psalm 119 uses exactly those words, 00:06:57.140 --> 00:06:58.720 decrees and laws and rules. 00:06:59.020 --> 00:07:03.560 And we sometimes get a little bit cringy about those words. 00:07:03.800 --> 00:07:06.319 We're not that excited about decrees and laws, 00:07:06.460 --> 00:07:08.300 but how crucial and how important. 00:07:10.140 --> 00:07:10.939 Because ultimately, 00:07:11.200 --> 00:07:14.140 if it comes to not just escaping, 00:07:14.439 --> 00:07:15.759 but also getting to safety, 00:07:15.759 --> 00:07:18.000 it is actually the word of God, 00:07:18.860 --> 00:07:19.560 which will, 00:07:20.819 --> 00:07:22.259 in their lives as well as ours, 00:07:22.980 --> 00:07:24.099 manage exactly that. 00:07:24.659 --> 00:07:28.800 We need today the word of God more than ever before. 00:07:29.240 --> 00:07:30.480 If we've become a Christian, 00:07:30.599 --> 00:07:33.339 it's not the way to just take that step, 00:07:33.480 --> 00:07:35.620 but to continue to follow in that step 00:07:35.620 --> 00:07:38.039 and to end up in safety. 00:07:38.539 --> 00:07:41.759 We need these decrees and laws to shape and mold us 00:07:41.759 --> 00:07:43.439 and to form our everyday life 00:07:43.439 --> 00:07:46.319 so that we continue to follow him faithfully. 00:07:47.219 --> 00:07:49.600 And that is exactly what this chapter is about. 00:07:51.879 --> 00:07:53.759 Making the word of God available 00:07:53.759 --> 00:07:56.220 to the smallest group ever. 00:07:57.040 --> 00:08:00.079 For it was and still is We must never take away from both the authority 00:08:11.000 --> 00:08:12.839 and the power of this word 00:08:12.839 --> 00:08:16.560 I sometimes wonder in the visual age that we live in 00:08:16.560 --> 00:08:19.079 that we think that books, you know, 00:08:19.159 --> 00:08:19.919 black and white, 00:08:20.079 --> 00:08:22.699 sheets of paper are from the past. 00:08:23.139 --> 00:08:24.839 They can't teach us much anymore. 00:08:25.519 --> 00:08:26.659 You know, I'm a visual learner 00:08:26.659 --> 00:08:28.699 or I want to experience. 00:08:29.739 --> 00:08:31.259 And however valuable that is, 00:08:31.799 --> 00:08:33.839 ultimately God has chosen his word 00:08:33.839 --> 00:08:36.759 to explain to us how we get to safety. 00:08:39.259 --> 00:08:40.659 Unfortunately, there's a slight blip 00:08:40.659 --> 00:08:44.100 because the way that Moses was going about 00:08:44.100 --> 00:08:45.939 getting that word available to everybody 00:08:45.939 --> 00:08:46.919 wasn't working. 00:08:46.919 --> 00:08:49.259 Verse 18, Jethro says, 00:08:49.579 --> 00:08:51.019 you and these people who come to you 00:08:51.019 --> 00:08:52.980 will only wear yourselves out. 00:08:53.360 --> 00:08:55.100 The work is too heavy for you. 00:08:55.539 --> 00:08:58.059 You cannot handle it alone. 00:08:58.899 --> 00:08:59.839 Moses, unfortunately, 00:09:00.719 --> 00:09:03.179 however much you want to desire 00:09:03.179 --> 00:09:06.579 to pass on God's directions to people's lives, 00:09:06.580 --> 00:09:08.660 the way you do it doesn't work. 00:09:08.980 --> 00:09:10.340 So in comes this person, 00:09:10.540 --> 00:09:12.860 Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, 00:09:12.860 --> 00:09:14.400 and he comes in with advice 00:09:14.400 --> 00:09:17.100 on how this is to be accomplished. 00:09:18.100 --> 00:09:18.920 But listen how he does that. 00:09:18.980 --> 00:09:20.160 In verse 17, for example, 00:09:20.620 --> 00:09:21.680 he basically tells him, 00:09:22.160 --> 00:09:23.300 what you do is no good. 00:09:24.360 --> 00:09:25.600 I mean, how are we with advice? 00:09:27.680 --> 00:09:28.840 I've been doing a little bit of research 00:09:28.840 --> 00:09:31.580 and you constantly come across this phrase 00:09:32.280 --> 00:09:34.220 where we love giving advice. 00:09:34.220 --> 00:09:36.800 It's one of the greatest pleasures in life, isn't it? 00:09:37.080 --> 00:09:40.019 We're always ready to point out to somebody, 00:09:40.080 --> 00:09:42.100 hey, maybe you should do it this way or that way. 00:09:42.399 --> 00:09:43.860 Certainly where I'm from in the he'd been given 00:10:45.440 --> 00:10:47.320 and that has helped him the most in life is, 00:10:47.720 --> 00:10:49.240 put your head down and work hard. 00:10:49.240 --> 00:10:51.560 Similarly, the
