don't care how right they are or how much better this would be for me. 00:00:57.479 --> 00:01:03.059 I'm not going to listen to what they have to say because who are they to try to correct me? there's another person maybe in the church 00:01:20.980 --> 00:01:27.600 or another person in our home or in our lives, and they seem to have more authority than we have, 00:01:27.640 --> 00:01:32.840 and they seem to exercise more influence than we have, and we get envious of them, 00:01:32.920 --> 00:01:38.100 not because they're bad or because they're wrong or because they're causing us problems, 00:01:38.099 --> 00:01:45.619 just because they have more authority than us, and we don't want to have to submit to anybody's authority except our own. 00:01:46.759 --> 00:01:55.539 And that's exactly the position that these rulers in Israel were finding themselves at this point in Mark's gospel. 00:01:55.540 --> 00:02:02.740 For them, Jesus is no longer a distant Galilean problem. he is their deliverer, that he is the one that they want to follow now. 00:02:28.199 --> 00:02:32.239 And then the next day, he has the audacity to go into the temple, 00:02:32.639 --> 00:02:36.739 and as he goes into the temple, he starts to flip over the money-changing stations, 00:02:36.739 --> 00:02:41.019 and he's chasing out all the merchants that these leaders had put in place. 00:02:41.159 --> 00:02:45.759 He's ruining every effort that they have of trying to have a successful business 00:02:45.759 --> 00:02:49.699 and exploit the people of God and the purposes of God. 00:02:49.699 --> 00:02:53.319 He's now in their face, and he's getting in their way. 00:02:54.479 --> 00:03:01.219 He's now entered their turf, and he's making a wreck of everything they had seen it anywhere in Mark's gospel up to this point. 00:03:13.879 --> 00:03:22.740 And this text records for us the first of a series of confrontations between Jesus and these men, 00:03:22.840 --> 00:03:27.500 and these confrontations are going to take us all the way through the end of chapter 12. 00:03:28.159 --> 00:03:33.500 And the overarching theme here, especially in this section, but really in the whole thing, 00:03:33.800 --> 00:03:37.919 the overarching theme is this issue of authority. 00:03:37.919 --> 00:03:48.379 And it's the explicit theme of verses 27 and chapter 11 all the way through verse 12 of chapter 12. 00:03:48.639 --> 00:03:51.739 This is really that whole span is this same interaction. 00:03:52.039 --> 00:03:54.259 We're just not going to get to the second part until next week. 00:03:55.519 --> 00:04:02.219 And I want to point out to you here at this point a particular word that's used in these verses 00:04:02.219 --> 00:04:06.759 that I think will be helpful for us to have some understanding and application in particular. 00:04:07.560 --> 00:04:09.439 The word is authority. 00:04:10.139 --> 00:04:16.899 And I have on the screen for you how we would define this from its original language. 00:04:17.459 --> 00:04:19.620 Authority is how we interpret it in English. 00:04:20.100 --> 00:04:22.339 The Greek word here is exousia. 00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:23.519 Exousia. 00:04:23.519 --> 00:04:37.259 And it means to have the right to govern, to control, to exercise dominion over something or someone or some process. 00:04:37.919 --> 00:04:40.000 That's repeated in this section. 00:04:40.159 --> 00:04:41.799 This is the word that they keep saying. 00:04:42.159 --> 00:04:45.180 These Pharisees or whoever it is else that's a part of this group, 00:04:45.560 --> 00:04:50.439 they come up and, and who has given you the exousia to do these things? 00:04:50.439 --> 00:04:56.180 And Jesus tells them at the end of it, you answer my question and I'll tell you who has given me the exousia. 00:04:56.480 --> 00:05:02.839 The, the authority, the right to govern over all these things and to control them and to exercise dominion, 00:05:02.959 --> 00:05:04.800 even over you. 00:05:05.379 --> 00:05:12.439 And the point of conflict in this text is the religious leaders challenged to Jesus. 00:05:13.659 --> 00:05:17.680 His, their challenge to his right to teach what he was teaching 00:05:17.680 --> 00:05:24.579 and to act as if he was the one that had control over the temple procedures in particular. 00:05:25.579 --> 00:05:32.100 And so as they witnessed the crowds continue to flock to Jesus and begin to accept what he was doing, 00:05:32.900 --> 00:05:38.480 these men found that his exousia was a threat to their own. 00:05:38.480 --> 00:05:46.240 And for their influence and power to remain, Jesus's authority would have to be denied 00:05:46.240 --> 00:05:49.780 and Jesus himself would have to be destroyed. 00:05:50.160 --> 00:05:52.520 And this is the setup in Mark's gospel. 00:05:52.980 --> 00:05:59.460 As we're going through chapter 12, this is the setup for Mark's gospel for Jesus's trial and execution 00:05:59.460 --> 00:06:01.100 that's going to come in just a few chapters. 00:06:01.100 --> 00:06:07.120 And as we read through this, your first thought may not be that it's a complicated passage, 00:06:07.120 --> 00:06:09.900 it's really not that complex, it's, it's pretty simple. 00:06:10.720 --> 00:06:17.420 And you may find it to be informative as it contributes to the overall narrative of Mark's gospel. 00:06:17.960 --> 00:06:24.340 But you may be wondering, what exactly does this interaction between Jesus and these men have to do with me? 00:06:24.339 --> 00:06:30.239 What is so significant about this that we should take time to study it on a Sunday morning? 00:06:30.479 --> 00:06:32.799 What does it matter to me? 00:06:32.879 --> 00:06:34.619 How is it going to affect my life today? 00:06:35.599 --> 00:06:44.899 And what I want to show you this morning is that Jesus's authority over the temple and its rulers 00:06:44.899 --> 00:06:49.439 is the same authority that he has over you. 00:06:50.739 --> 00:06:51.699 It's the same. 00:06:51.699 --> 00:06:59.560 And just as these men sought to destroy Jesus in order to preserve their own power, 00:07:00.240 --> 00:07:10.319 so do we very often seek to destroy or ignore Christ's lordship in favor of our own lordship over our own lives. 00:07:11.159 --> 00:07:19.800 But because of who he is, Jesus indeed has the right to govern, control, 00:07:19.800 --> 00:07:24.240 and exercise dominion over your life and mine. 00:07:24.900 --> 00:07:29.920 And that authority demands our faith and also our obedience. 00:07:30.680 --> 00:07:36.620 The first thing I want you to see here as we look at verses 27 and 28 is his authority resisted. 00:07:37.180 --> 00:07:38.960 His authority resisted. 00:07:39.660 --> 00:07:40.920 Look at verse 27. 00:07:40.920 --> 00:08:04.740 So there's three groups of people that have combined as a single delegation here. 00:08:04.740 --> 00:08:10.280 We're told that it's the chief priest, the scribes, and the elders. 00:08:10.939 --> 00:08:17.000 All three groups would have made up what was known as the great Sanhedrin. 00:08:17.720 --> 00:08:19.300 But we throw that word out there sometimes. 00:08:19.379 --> 00:08:21.519 I don't know that I've ever really described it to you. 00:08:21.600 --> 00:08:25.800 The Sanhedrin was a governing body in Israel. 00:08:25.800 --> 00:08:34.560 It consisted of 71 men, and they all came from the three groups that were listed here in verse 27. 00:08:35.440 --> 00:08:44.659 The Sanhedrin had full power, complete power, when it came to the religious affairs of the people of Israel. 00:08:45.019 --> 00:08:54.259 And it had significant power, though restricted, when it came to the political matters relating to Rome. 00:08:54.259 --> 00:08:59.019 And in this case, the council itself is sending a delegation. 00:08:59.220 --> 00:09:01.080 This isn't all 71 men, most likely. 00:09:01.460 --> 00:09:05.340 This is a representative delegation of those men. 00:09:05.620 --> 00:09:11.519 And they've been sent to Jesus specifically to confront him in this way in the temple. 00:09:12.399 --> 00:09:19.460 This would be similar to one of us being personally confronted by a united delegation 00:09:19.460 --> 00:09:26.840 from both or from all the executive, judicial, and legislative branches of government in the United States. 00:09:26.840 --> 00:09:32.200 This is like the vice president with a few congressmen, along with a couple of Supreme Court justices, 00:09:32.480 --> 00:09:37.139 confronting us after service today to let us know they don't appreciate very much what we're preaching, 00:09:37.139 --> 00:09:41.519 and they don't appreciate very much the way that we're behaving in regards to our faith. 00:09:41.519 --> 00:09:48.360 Jesus, in this moment, is not up against a few rogue agents in the religious establishment. 00:09:48.579 --> 00:09:51.199 He's against the establishment itself now. 00:09:52.639 --> 00:09:54.960 These are not just a few of them that are irritated. 00:09:55.340 --> 00:09:57.079 This is not a few power-hungry men. 00:09:57.079 --> 00:10:02.460 This is the entire establishment of politics and religion in the nation of Israel 00:10:02.460 --> 00:10:08.240 that are now coming to Jesus and threatening him and trying to destroy him. 00:10:08.240 --> 00:10:17.419 And as they approached the Lord, they issued this public challenge, demanding his credentials, essentially. 00:10:19.259 --> 00:10:21.620 Who said you could do these things? 00:10:23.240 --> 00:10:27.799 But the conflict of authority wasn't a new one in this relationship. 00:10:29.000 --> 00:10:34.759 This exact issue has been simmering for a while, and it's only just now coming to a boiling point 00:10:34.759 --> 00:10:39.000 now that Jesus is in Jerusalem and he's in the temple and he's doing these things. 00:10:39.059 --> 00:10:45.059 I want to just walk you through, just briefly, some passages that we've already looked at in Mark's gospel 00:10:45.059 --> 00:10:47.200 that deal with this simmering issue. 00:10:47.500 --> 00:10:49.960 In fact, flip with me a few pages to chapter 1. 00:10:54.240 --> 00:10:55.379 Mark chapter 1. 00:10:57.539 --> 00:11:01.659 Jesus' public ministry has only just begun in Galilee. 00:11:01.659 --> 00:11:04.679 And I want you to look with me at verse 22. 00:11:06.879 --> 00:11:15.779 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority 00:11:15.779 --> 00:11:19.819 and not as the scribes. 00:11:20.159 --> 00:11:21.659 Let's get down to verse 27. 00:11:23.039 --> 00:11:27.959 And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, 00:11:27.960 --> 00:11:29.280 What is this? 00:11:29.920 --> 00:11:31.920 A new teaching with authority. 00:11:32.879 --> 00:11:36.680 He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him. 00:11:37.180 --> 00:11:39.960 I want you to think for just a second what's happening in that passage. 00:11:40.700 --> 00:11:43.580 Remember, authority is excusia. 00:11:43.840 --> 00:11:44.940 It's the same word here. 00:11:46.019 --> 00:11:49.540 Now, what they're referring to when they're talking about Jesus' teaching 00:11:49.540 --> 00:11:51.639 and when they're talking about his power over demons, 00:11:51.780 --> 00:11:54.040 they're not talking about the power itself. 00:11:54.039 --> 00:11:58.099 This is not the word for an ability to do something. 00:11:58.360 --> 00:12:01.559 They're not shocked by Jesus' ability to teach 00:12:01.559 --> 00:12:04.480 and his ability to cast out demons. 00:12:04.919 --> 00:12:07.559 If that was the case, they would have used a different word, 00:12:07.639 --> 00:12:08.539 the word dunamis. 00:12:09.339 --> 00:12:11.439 Dunamis is used all throughout the Gospels as well. 00:12:11.719 --> 00:12:15.059 It's a reference to his specific power to act. 00:12:15.679 --> 00:12:17.679 It's the same word we get dynamite from. 00:12:17.799 --> 00:12:20.360 It's explosive power, ability to act. 00:12:20.599 --> 00:12:22.039 That's not the words they're using here. 00:12:22.039 --> 00:12:23.879 Here they're using the word excusia. 00:12:23.959 --> 00:12:26.159 In other words, when they hear Jesus teach, 00:12:26.259 --> 00:12:30.159 they're saying he teaches us as if he has the right to teach us. 00:12:31.019 --> 00:12:34.939 He is teaching us as if he is the one who actually has the right 00:12:34.939 --> 00:12:36.699 to tell us what to do and what not to do. 00:12:36.939 --> 00:12:40.919 And by the way, this is markedly different than how the scribes teach. 00:12:41.879 --> 00:12:45.079 Now, do you think if you were a scribe in that particular prayer meeting 00:12:45.079 --> 00:12:46.219 in the synagogue that day, 00:12:46.299 --> 00:12:48.659 you'd be a little bothered by the estimation of the people? 00:12:49.279 --> 00:12:49.959 Of course. 00:12:49.959 --> 00:12:49.959 00:12:49.960 --> 00:12:51.800 Of course. 00:12:52.519 --> 00:12:54.280 Because up to that point, as a scribe, 00:12:54.420 --> 00:12:56.620 you've been the one with the authority to teach. 00:12:57.720 --> 00:13:00.480 You've been the one that everybody was supposed to listen to. 00:13:00.960 --> 00:13:04.620 But now they hear Jesus, and they don't care about the scribe anymore. 00:13:11.780 --> 00:13:13.700 There is exousia here. 00:13:13.700 --> 00:13:17.379 And then immediately after, he's confronted by this demon-possessed man. 00:13:17.540 --> 00:13:18.780 And what does Jesus do? 00:13:19.580 --> 00:13:20.940 He cast out the demon. 00:13:21.200 --> 00:13:23.280 And what was their estimation of that miracle? 00:13:24.840 --> 00:13:28.720 Not dunamis, exousia. 00:13:28.720 --> 00:13:32.660 He not only has the power to cast out demons, 00:13:32.899 --> 00:13:36.820 he has the right to control demons. 00:13:37.600 --> 00:13:38.560 It's authority. 00:13:39.240 --> 00:13:42.320 And the tension begins between Jesus and these scribes. 00:13:42.660 --> 00:13:44.060 Flip over to chapter 2 now. 00:13:44.059 --> 00:13:47.019 You remember this story? 00:13:47.099 --> 00:13:50.539 The four men, they bring their paralytic friend to Jesus, 00:13:50.659 --> 00:13:52.559 and they tear open the roof, and they drop him down. 00:13:53.119 --> 00:13:54.339 Look at verse 7. 00:13:54.340 --> 00:13:58.180 As soon as the man comes down, Jesus says, 00:13:58.300 --> 00:13:58.980 Your sins are forgiven. 00:13:59.100 --> 00:14:01.820 Here's how the religious leaders responded. 00:14:01.960 --> 00:14:03.560 Why does this man speak like that? 00:14:03.720 --> 00:14:05.080 He's blaspheming. 00:14:05.980 --> 00:14:08.360 Who can forgive sins but God alone? 00:14:08.700 --> 00:14:10.200 And what is it that Jesus says? 00:14:10.460 --> 00:14:11.200 Verse 10. 00:14:12.360 --> 00:14:19.100 That you may know that the Son of Man has exousia on earth to forgive sins. 00:14:19.100 --> 00:14:24.840 Not just the power to forgive sin, but the right to exercise that power. 00:14:25.860 --> 00:14:29.320 He says that you may know that I have this authority. tradition of men, Jesus says. 00:17:16.799 --> 00:17:22.960 So we can see now how this issue of authority has been simmering for a long time. 00:17:24.059 --> 00:17:30.000 And Jesus is no longer that distant problem in the backwoods of the Galilean region. 00:17:30.119 --> 00:17:32.099 That's not what Jesus is anymore for these men. 00:17:32.099 --> 00:17:41.519 And the catalyst for this confrontation in chapter 11 was the praise-filled entry into Jerusalem, 00:17:41.519 --> 00:17:45.279 and then the subsequent clearing of the temple. 00:17:45.279 --> 00:17:50.720 And these men were coming to Jesus in the temple, and they were essentially asking him, 00:17:51.240 --> 00:17:57.920 Who or what gives you the right to teach these things and interfere with our lives? 00:17:58.599 --> 00:18:06.299 What gives you the right, Jesus, to tell us how we're supposed to run things here at the temple? 00:18:06.299 --> 00:18:11.500 And it's the same question that all of us have asked at some point, 00:18:11.539 --> 00:18:17.799 and maybe you're asking today, as you resist and rebel against Christ's authority in your life. 00:18:19.680 --> 00:18:25.240 What gives Jesus the right to tell me 00:30:00.740 --> 00:30:03.339 But notice how Mark emphasized 00:30:03.339 --> 00:30:05.679 what the focus of their thoughts were. 00:30:06.319 --> 00:30:08.500 Look back at Mark chapter 11. 00:30:08.500 --> 00:30:11.740 Why were they afraid of the people? 00:30:12.140 --> 00:30:16.240 For all the people held that John really was a what? 00:30:17.240 --> 00:30:18.299 A prophet. 00:30:19.900 --> 00:30:22.539 When the people thought about John, 00:30:22.660 --> 00:30:25.859 they didn't think about a preacher of repentance first. 00:30:26.240 --> 00:30:29.420 They didn't think about a baptizer first. 00:30:29.559 --> 00:30:32.200 They thought prophet first. 00:30:32.200 --> 00:30:34.620 And what was the nature of John's prophecy? 00:30:35.480 --> 00:30:37.000 Jesus is the Christ. 00:30:37.960 --> 00:30:39.720 Jesus is the Son of God. 00:30:40.480 --> 00:30:44.420 It's he that has come to redeem us and to save us. 00:30:44.500 --> 00:30:49.319 He is the Lamb of God slain for the sins of the world. 00:30:49.319 --> 00:30:49.379 God. 00:30:55.599 --> 00:30:58.859 To acknowledge the authority of John's ministry 00:30:58.859 --> 00:31:05.439 was to recognize the supreme authority of Jesus. 00:31:05.440 --> 00:31:10.860 Do you see why this was so wise of Jesus? 00:31:12.799 --> 00:31:14.940 He wasn't seeking to destroy these men. 00:31:15.000 --> 00:31:17.019 would be to confess that Jesus was the Christ. 00:31:47.200 --> 00:31:50.140 And Jesus' question puts these men in a difficult position. 00:31:51.280 --> 00:31:53.160 Should they affirm John's ministry? 00:31:53.160 --> 00:31:57.300 They would have to admit what they suspected was true of Jesus. 00:31:58.259 --> 00:32:01.259 They'd have to admit that Jesus actually did have this authority.
