So do keep two kings open in front of you. 00:00:24.320 --> 00:00:31.120 I've been dwelling a lot with Elijah and Elisha recently, and this passage has just been 00:00:31.120 --> 00:00:36.840 just a lot on my heart and mind. So I thought when Graham gave me a free choice of what to preach, 00:00:36.960 --> 00:00:41.340 I would bring this. Two of my favorite Old Testament characters, I'm sure they are for 00:00:41.340 --> 00:00:48.159 some of you too. Two great prophetic figures. I'm really not sure that Elijah would have been a 00:00:48.159 --> 00:00:57.839 particularly easy person to be around. It's quite an abrupt prophetic character for very 00:00:57.839 --> 00:01:05.579 difficult times. Those are very difficult times that he's living in. A loner, sometimes despairing 00:01:05.579 --> 00:01:13.379 of life, feeling that he has failed to turn Israel back to the Lord, and sometimes believing 00:01:13.379 --> 00:01:17.579 that he is the last believer left. Imagine that. Imagine thinking that you're the last Christian 00:01:17.579 --> 00:01:25.159 left. What happened? God. What was that all about then? What was the point? Was it even 00:01:25.159 --> 00:01:33.340 real, all those promises? That worship, that stuff we did in church. And now I'm for the chop 00:01:33.340 --> 00:01:41.739 too. Not a very tame individual, Elijah. Prophets usually aren't. And there's quite a lot of confrontation 00:01:41.739 --> 00:01:50.060 and calling down fire from heaven in Elijah's story. Now, what's a prophet? A prophet in the Old 00:01:50.060 --> 00:01:57.619 Testament was somebody that God sent into situations where his people were turning their backs on him. 00:01:58.539 --> 00:02:06.079 And that was sometimes through drift, oftentimes through quite deliberate, outright defined obedience, 00:02:06.079 --> 00:02:13.780 disobedience. And the prophet comes and reasserts God's truth and God's reality into that situation. 00:02:13.919 --> 00:02:23.520 He confronts unbelief, confronts idolatry, reasserts God's covenant with Israel through Moses, 00:02:23.740 --> 00:02:31.079 the plumb line of God's truth, and then reveals what God has said is going to happen if they repent and turn to him. 00:02:31.080 --> 00:02:38.160 And sometimes reveals what God has said is going to happen if they refuse to repent and turn to him. 00:02:39.060 --> 00:02:46.700 So prophets align people to truth. They recalibrate them to true north, if you like, like a compass 00:02:46.700 --> 00:02:49.040 so that the people know where to go. 00:02:51.120 --> 00:02:58.500 And by the time we reach Elijah's day, the situation was really bleak. It's very bleak indeed. 00:02:58.500 --> 00:03:05.199 After a few somewhat better years under Kings David and Solomon, the building of the temple, 00:03:05.740 --> 00:03:12.439 bringing of the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem, God blessing Israel with peace and with growth. 00:03:12.960 --> 00:03:15.159 After that time, the kingdom split. 00:03:16.800 --> 00:03:23.400 And 10 of the 12 tribes of Israel, the sons of Jacob, had turned their back on the house and kingdom of David. 00:03:23.400 --> 00:03:30.680 They'd left Jerusalem and they had set up a new kingdom in the north with a new capital city called Samaria. 00:03:31.420 --> 00:03:36.599 Built by their first king, who was a real stinker called Omri, came to power in a military coup. 00:03:37.259 --> 00:03:41.140 So they've got this new kingdom in the north with the majority of the tribes. 00:03:41.259 --> 00:03:44.819 They call it Israel, and their capital city is in Samaria. 00:03:44.819 --> 00:03:49.099 Leaving just two tribes with the house of David around Jerusalem. 00:03:49.799 --> 00:03:51.099 And that's now called Judah. 00:03:51.340 --> 00:03:54.039 So Israel in the north and Judah in the south. 00:03:54.139 --> 00:03:56.879 And this kingdom in the north, Israel, the 10 tribes, 00:03:57.579 --> 00:04:04.560 they instituted a new national state religion with new national idol gods. 00:04:05.159 --> 00:04:08.439 They started with golden calves, just like at Exodus. 00:04:08.439 --> 00:04:15.759 But then they moved on to Baal idols and Asherah poles and other fertility idols and weather gods. 00:04:16.339 --> 00:04:21.839 And they set up counterfeit feasts to mimic the great celebrations of God in Jerusalem, 00:04:22.480 --> 00:04:25.540 particularly a fake feast of tabernacles. 00:04:25.899 --> 00:04:30.399 And that had all the pomp and paraphernalia and performance of state religion 00:04:30.399 --> 00:04:33.000 to prevent people from returning to Jerusalem. 00:04:33.000 --> 00:04:41.639 Why would you want to go back to Jerusalem when we got this fantastic ceremonial yuck stuff going on up here? 00:04:42.639 --> 00:04:43.819 It was very impressive. 00:04:45.040 --> 00:04:51.279 Now, Omri was bad, but his son King Ahab was worse. 00:04:53.060 --> 00:04:58.180 And we are told that he did more evil in the eyes of the Lord than anybody before him, 00:04:58.860 --> 00:05:02.319 with the possible exception of his wife, Queen Jezebel. 00:05:02.319 --> 00:05:03.339 She was even worse. 00:05:04.060 --> 00:05:10.079 She was a vicious, murderous, pagan Amorite from a place called Sidon. 00:05:10.500 --> 00:05:15.399 And she had brought with her 400 prophets of Baal, the Sidonian storm god, 00:05:15.620 --> 00:05:19.800 and 400 prophets of the fertility goddess Asherah with her. 00:05:20.039 --> 00:05:24.879 And she had installed them right at the heart of the national life of the kingdom. 00:05:24.879 --> 00:05:34.639 The real shock is that the people of God had gone from the high point under King David 00:05:34.639 --> 00:05:42.759 to Elijah thinking he might be the last believer left on earth in just under 100 years. 00:05:42.759 --> 00:05:49.480 They had gone from the dedication of the temple under King Solomon with just the high point, 00:05:49.560 --> 00:05:51.519 everyone thinking Yahweh is so wonderful, 00:05:51.519 --> 00:05:59.599 to prophets hiding in caves and the religion of Yahweh being declared illegal in 58 years. 00:05:59.600 --> 00:06:01.600 That is the blink of an eye. 00:06:01.600 --> 00:06:04.080 That is the absolute blink of an eye. 00:06:05.120 --> 00:06:05.860 58 years. 00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:06.480 What is that? 00:06:07.100 --> 00:06:08.080 A generation and a half. 00:06:08.920 --> 00:06:09.760 Quite astonishing. 00:06:10.240 --> 00:06:13.480 Those priests in the temple who had seen the power of God, 00:06:14.000 --> 00:06:17.340 this was their worst nightmare and it happened so fast. 00:06:18.340 remain steadfastly faithful to the truths of God. 00:06:30.259 --> 00:06:33.639 It is lovely to come somewhere this morning where the Bible is taken seriously. 00:06:36.600 --> 00:06:41.079 And into the middle of all that, God sent Elijah and Elisha. 00:06:42.920 --> 00:06:47.819 Elijah's name means, my God is Yahweh. 00:06:47.819 --> 00:06:51.099 My God is Yahweh. 00:06:51.399 --> 00:06:55.159 And some of you will remember how he burst onto the scene in 1 Kings 17 00:06:55.159 --> 00:06:58.480 and confronted King Ahab with the words, 00:06:59.259 --> 00:07:02.659 I stand before the God of Israel who lives. 00:07:03.279 --> 00:07:05.959 Therefore, it's not going to rain in the land except of my word. 00:07:06.659 --> 00:07:11.159 I stand before the God of Israel who lives. 00:07:11.719 --> 00:07:12.120 Therefore. 00:07:12.120 --> 00:07:17.879 And I know that many of us will be familiar with lots of the events 00:07:17.879 --> 00:07:21.420 that my God is Yahweh was involved in. 00:07:21.759 --> 00:07:25.480 Mighty confrontations with the powers that be in Israel, 00:07:26.040 --> 00:07:27.699 with its false religion. 00:07:28.699 --> 00:07:32.360 So seemingly inconsequential, just one little guy 00:07:32.360 --> 00:07:35.220 against hundreds of fervent idol priests 00:07:35.220 --> 00:07:38.340 and all the power of the state behind them. 00:07:39.640 --> 00:07:43.280 But my God is Yahweh. 00:07:43.860 --> 00:07:50.180 Despite all appearances, you are always secure when my God is Yahweh. 00:07:50.760 --> 00:07:52.220 I don't know what you're facing this week, 00:07:52.440 --> 00:07:56.860 but if your God is Yahweh, then you are safe. 00:07:56.860 --> 00:08:01.160 And Elisha. 00:08:02.420 --> 00:08:06.780 Elisha was Elijah's apprentice and his eventual successor. 00:08:07.379 --> 00:08:10.220 And his name means, my God saves. 00:08:11.819 --> 00:08:12.819 My God saves. 00:08:14.639 --> 00:08:17.139 Elijah's ministry was mainly on the national stage. 00:08:17.620 --> 00:08:21.240 There were a few more individual stories like Naboth and his vineyard. 00:08:21.240 --> 00:08:28.040 But even that's basically the tale of God versus Omri, Ahab and the Baals. 00:08:29.000 --> 00:08:30.220 That battle going on. 00:08:30.900 --> 00:08:35.419 And with Elisha, we get a lot more stories of redemption and rescue at a personal level. 00:08:36.120 --> 00:08:40.820 But they both form this sort of unit at the center of the books of 1 and 2 Kings, 00:08:41.299 --> 00:08:44.580 bringing the word of the Lord to the northern kingdom. 00:08:45.200 --> 00:08:48.919 This apostate ten tribes with their new state religion. 00:08:48.919 --> 00:08:49.919 And that is amazing. 00:08:49.919 --> 00:08:54.099 Because the northern kingdom had comprehensively rejected God. 00:08:54.979 --> 00:08:56.000 Utterly turned their back. 00:08:56.240 --> 00:08:58.159 They turned to idols enthusiastically. 00:08:59.719 --> 00:09:03.799 And you might have thought that the Lord would just wash his hands on them. 00:09:03.860 --> 00:09:04.360 Wipe them out. 00:09:06.219 --> 00:09:07.559 Rather than send prophets. 00:09:09.279 --> 00:09:12.219 These two books, 1 and 2 Kings, they were actually written much later. 00:09:13.000 --> 00:09:16.819 After God had actually allowed the destruction of the northern kingdom of Israel. 00:09:16.819 --> 00:09:18.299 And the exile of the southern kingdom. 00:09:18.299 --> 00:09:22.699 The writer had seen both of those things already happen. 00:09:23.339 --> 00:09:26.139 The writer knew what the trajectory was when he wrote this. 00:09:26.839 --> 00:09:30.519 And yet is still very keen to point out that God was still very active in the north. 00:09:31.919 --> 00:09:33.479 He did mighty miracles there. 00:09:34.179 --> 00:09:35.740 There were schools of prophets there. 00:09:35.740 --> 00:09:39.419 Even though the writer knew that the people hated God. 00:09:39.419 --> 00:09:41.820 He knew what the trajectory was when he wrote it. 00:09:43.259 --> 00:09:44.320 God was at work. 00:09:45.159 --> 00:09:46.440 Just amazing grace. 00:09:47.019 --> 00:09:49.759 People might be faithless, but the Lord never ever is. 00:09:50.919 --> 00:09:56.759 Were we to turn on a few chapters to chapter 13, we get a little hint of why the Lord was gracious to them. 00:09:56.759 --> 00:09:58.439 Even in their apostasy. 00:09:58.439 --> 00:10:10.360 Where we read in chapter 13, the Lord was gracious to them and showed concern for them because of his covenant hundreds of years earlier with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 00:10:10.720 --> 00:10:14.639 To this day, he has been unwilling to destroy them or banish them from his presence. 00:10:14.639 --> 00:10:21.080 Now that covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob was a set of amazing promises that God made. 00:10:21.279 --> 00:10:24.559 That I am going to bless you just because I am the God who blesses. 00:10:24.980 --> 00:10:26.259 You are going to be a blessing. 00:10:27.019 --> 00:10:30.139 There is going to be blessing to the whole earth through you. 00:10:30.639 --> 00:10:34.779 And particularly to an eventual I've reserved 7,000 who haven't bowed the knee to Baal. 00:11:20.220 --> 00:11:32.540 And even when the northern kingdom is finally obliterated, he still keeps his promise because 700 years later, those of you who know the story about the baby Jesus will know that when the infant Jesus was presented in the temple, 00:11:32.539 --> 00:11:36.120 we meet a lady called Anna. 00:11:36.120 --> 00:11:40.819 I'm told she's a very old prophetess looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. 00:11:41.559 --> 00:11:46.980 And she was descended from the tribe of Asher in the northern kingdom that was destroyed 700 years before. 00:11:48.519 --> 00:11:49.199 I don't know. 00:11:49.240 --> 00:11:53.699 Maybe she traced her ancestry back to the companies of prophets we hear about here. 00:11:53.700 --> 00:11:54.160 But we don't know. 00:11:54.580 --> 00:11:55.700 What we do know is this. 00:11:56.120 --> 00:11:58.920 The Lord is so faithful to us. 00:12:00.060 --> 00:12:01.180 Over generations. after Mount Carmel. 00:14:08.580 --> 00:14:16.220 He's plowing with 12 yoke of oxen, probably from a wealthy family, probably found it very difficult to keep the oxen alive over that period. calling Elisha to prophetic ministry now by throwing his cloak around him. 00:14:35.700 --> 00:14:39.360 Just hold that detail in your mind as we go on, the throwing of the cloak around him. 00:15:19.879 Maybe there's a sense that this handover, this parting is going to be painful for Elisha. 00:15:20.580 --> 00:15:24.860 They have been together for years like a son with his father in the schools of prophets. 00:17:58.259 --> 00:18:03.099 Maybe God is sending Elijah there for a final chance to just see his friends and his protégés 00:18:03.099 --> 00:18:05.279 hand on the baton to the certainly so the prophets can witness and testify that Elisha has succeeded him. 00:18:18.139 --> 00:18:22.699 But maybe too, so that Elijah can see some of what God was doing all the time,
