--> 00:00:39.039 And so, our topic this morning is find the power that you're looking for. 00:00:40.179 --> 00:00:43.060 So, we're going to be thinking about power this morning. 00:00:44.380 --> 00:00:50.880 And we know that in our world, we have big problems with power. 00:00:52.159 --> 00:00:54.980 Men and women are looking for power. 00:00:54.979 --> 00:00:59.759 Many people step on other people to get it. 00:01:00.759 --> 00:01:03.899 And many people suffer when power is abused. 00:01:03.899 --> 00:01:10.019 The first problem that we have with power is that it is abused. 00:01:11.560 --> 00:01:15.299 When we think about power, I wonder what comes to mind when you think about power. 00:01:15.879 --> 00:01:20.319 I don't think of chess pieces, but that was just a cool picture I found online. 00:01:20.319 --> 00:01:24.339 But when we think about power, we often think about the big people in our world. 00:01:24.539 --> 00:01:29.059 The kings and the queens, the presidents, the CEOs of the big companies. 00:01:29.839 --> 00:01:37.959 But in actual fact, across all layers of society, we have people using their relative positions of power 00:01:37.959 --> 00:01:40.859 to trod on other people to benefit themselves. 00:01:40.859 --> 00:01:45.400 I think we can probably imagine how that happens. 00:01:46.180 --> 00:01:55.500 Nearly every day on our news channels, we see examples of people abusing their power for selfish gains. 00:01:56.019 --> 00:01:59.099 People abuse other people who are under their care. 00:02:00.460 --> 00:02:04.840 World leaders throw their weight around like children in the playground. 00:02:04.840 --> 00:02:11.939 And people in the workplace devote as much time to one-upmanship as they do to their work. 00:02:13.039 --> 00:02:16.719 And people do this without a care for the consequences 00:02:16.719 --> 00:02:23.120 and without any feelings of compassion for those that are suffering under their actions. 00:02:24.420 --> 00:02:26.439 There's a fellow called Lord Acton. 00:02:26.580 --> 00:02:29.560 You'll probably recognize his quote rather than his portrait. 00:02:29.560 --> 00:02:31.719 But this is Lord Acton. 00:02:31.900 --> 00:02:39.020 And he famously wrote that power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. 00:02:39.840 --> 00:02:43.580 Great men are almost always bad men. 00:02:44.640 --> 00:02:47.180 And I think Lord Acton was right. 00:02:47.759 --> 00:02:50.140 When sinful hearts are empowered, 00:02:50.960 --> 00:02:55.460 they suddenly have a greater ability to follow their sinful heart's desires. 00:02:55.460 --> 00:03:01.680 And the fallout to following these desires is often much uglier. 00:03:02.420 --> 00:03:04.540 When kids fight at primary school, 00:03:04.980 --> I've said it already, 00:04:45.260 --> 00:04:48.240 but the question that we're asking ourselves this morning is, 00:04:48.780 --> 00:04:51.920 can we find the power that we're looking for? 00:04:52.620 --> 00:04:56.340 Now, we're not asking, where can we find power for ourselves? 00:04:57.300 --> 00:05:00.520 Rather, to rephrase the question slightly, 00:05:01.340 --> 00:05:05.220 it's, how can we find a power which is truly good? 00:05:05.220 --> 00:05:12.640 Can truly powerful people also be compassionate and selfless 00:05:12.640 --> 00:05:15.080 without a sniff of corruption? 00:05:15.720 --> 00:05:22.760 Can absolute power be wielded lovingly to lift up weak and helpless people? 00:05:22.759 --> 00:05:26.259 That's the question that we're asking this morning. 00:05:27.500 --> 00:05:30.980 So in Luke chapter 8, which Aaron read for us, 00:05:31.240 --> 00:05:33.319 it'd be good to keep it open in front of you 00:05:33.319 --> 00:05:36.000 because we're going to track through the story that we've read. 00:05:36.439 --> 00:05:38.519 And in Luke chapter 8, we meet a man 00:05:38.519 --> 00:05:43.839 who not only wields incredible life-changing power, 00:05:44.579 --> 00:05:48.379 but a man who doesn't use it for his own gain. 00:05:48.560 --> 00:05:52.339 So this is a different kind of power to what we see in the world around us. 00:05:52.339 --> 00:05:56.739 Jesus sees and he comprehends human suffering 00:05:56.739 --> 00:06:01.639 and uses his power to lift up weak and hopeless people. 00:06:02.239 --> 00:06:06.579 And not only that, unlike the great men and women of our world, 00:06:07.060 --> 00:06:09.699 Jesus claims to have the answer to death. 00:06:11.000 --> 00:06:12.639 His power is absolute, 00:06:13.379 --> 00:06:18.179 but it is power which is eternal and outlasts death. 00:06:18.180 --> 00:06:22.639 And Jesus invites us this morning to have faith 00:06:22.639 --> 00:06:25.819 that he is the ultimate answer to our suffering, 00:06:26.079 --> 00:06:27.579 to our shame, 00:06:28.180 --> 00:06:30.060 to our separation from God. 00:06:30.439 --> 00:06:35.240 And only he can give us the hope of life beyond death. 00:06:35.240 --> 00:06:39.660 So this is a story sandwiched inside another story. 00:06:40.900 --> 00:06:43.199 And it is about a man called Jairus 00:06:43.199 --> 00:06:46.139 and about a woman who has suffered for many years. 00:06:46.819 --> 00:06:49.439 And we're going to examine this story in three parts. 00:06:49.639 --> 00:06:52.620 So we're going to first look at how Jesus sees 00:06:52.620 --> 00:06:54.540 and cares about human suffering. 00:06:54.540 --> 00:06:59.939 Then we're going to see how one person's faith is commended 00:06:59.939 --> 00:07:05.300 and see another person invited to have faith in Jesus. 00:07:06.020 --> 00:07:07.580 So our first point, 00:07:07.680 --> 00:07:10.720 Jesus sees and cares about human suffering. 00:07:12.420 --> 00:07:15.680 So look again at the verses. 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:16.920 So verse 40, 00:07:16.920 --> 00:07:19.460 we see that Jesus enters a town 00:07:19.460 --> 00:07:21.980 and he is met with a huge crowd 00:07:21.980 --> 00:07:23.740 who are waiting for him 00:07:23.740 --> 00:07:25.699 and anticipating his next move. 00:07:26.980 --> 00:07:29.840 And as Jesus walks through these streets, 00:07:29.939 --> 00:07:32.500 it tells us that he's nearly crushed by the crowd. 00:07:32.960 --> 00:07:34.540 There are so many people here 00:07:34.540 --> 00:07:36.340 who've come to see this man. 00:07:36.819 --> 00:07:38.680 It is exceedingly busy. 00:07:39.580 --> 00:07:41.439 And it is here in this town 00:07:41.439 --> 00:07:44.540 that he meets a man called Jairus 00:07:44.540 --> 00:07:47.980 who has no answers to death. 00:07:48.879 --> 00:07:51.980 Jairus is a successful and important man. 00:07:52.760 --> 00:07:54.900 He is the leader of the local synagogue. 00:07:55.900 --> 00:07:59.100 But his world is utterly falling apart 00:07:59.100 --> 00:08:02.080 because his daughter is so sick 00:08:02.080 --> 00:08:04.140 and she is close to death. 00:08:06.720 --> 00:08:08.520 Despite the masses of people 00:08:08.520 --> 00:08:09.980 who've come out to meet Jesus, 00:08:10.820 --> 00:08:12.700 Jairus manages to get to Jesus 00:08:12.699 --> 00:08:15.860 and he falls down at Jesus' feet, 00:08:16.500 --> 00:08:17.639 pleading with Jesus, 00:08:18.300 --> 00:08:19.319 come to my house 00:08:19.319 --> 00:08:22.240 and save my daughter before she dies. 00:08:24.740 --> 00:08:25.959 Jairus' daughter is young. 00:08:26.099 --> 00:08:27.659 She's only 12 years old. 00:08:28.659 --> 00:08:31.860 And she is his and his wife's only child. 00:08:33.460 --> 00:08:35.740 Now, I'm not a father just yet, 00:08:36.159 --> 00:08:38.279 but Josie and I already feel 00:08:38.279 --> 00:08:41.939 so much love for our unborn baby boy. 00:08:42.720 --> 00:08:44.400 So I can somehow relate 00:08:44.400 --> 00:08:46.860 to what this man is feeling. 00:08:47.280 --> 00:08:48.920 But even if you're not a parent, 00:08:49.160 --> 00:08:50.520 I'm sure you can understand 00:08:50.520 --> 00:08:53.000 the gut-wrenching distress 00:08:53.000 --> 00:08:55.320 that this man is experiencing 00:08:55.320 --> 00:08:57.600 because he is so close 00:08:57.600 --> 00:08:59.240 to losing his daughter, 00:09:00.060 --> 00:09:01.180 his pride and joy, 00:09:02.020 --> 00:09:03.180 the love of his life. 00:09:04.740 --> 00:09:06.580 And Jairus is totally out of answers. 00:09:06.580 --> 00:09:11.600 He has no answer to his daughter's sickness 00:09:11.600 --> 00:09:13.200 and there's nothing he can do 00:09:13.200 --> 00:09:14.420 to prevent her from dying. 00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:16.280 But he has heard 00:09:16.280 --> 00:09:19.340 that this man Jesus is coming to town 00:09:19.340 --> 00:09:21.639 and he's heard that he can heal the sick. 00:09:22.759 --> 00:09:24.060 Maybe Jesus can help. 00:09:24.059 --> 00:09:30.099 Now, the British have been famous 00:09:30.099 --> 00:09:33.859 for their stiff upper lip attitude 00:09:33.859 --> 00:09:36.539 in times of war and in hardship 00:09:36.539 --> 00:09:38.459 or in times of pain. 00:09:39.199 --> 00:09:40.739 And even from a young age, 00:09:41.519 --> 00:09:43.139 British people would learn 00:09:43.139 --> 00:09:44.639 to grin and bear it, 00:09:45.739 --> 00:09:46.759 bury your emotions, 00:09:47.399 --> 00:09:48.219 remain calm, 00:09:48.220 --> 00:09:50.580 or as the phrase goes, 00:09:50.700 --> 00:09:52.420 keep calm and carry on. 00:09:53.980 --> 00:09:55.879 Respond unflinchingly 00:09:55.879 --> 00:09:57.540 to adversity. 00:09:59.320 --> 00:10:02.600 And as admirable as that attitude is, 00:10:03.360 --> 00:10:21.580 Jairus pleads with Jesus 00:10:21.580 --> 00:10:22.879 to come to his house 00:10:22.879 --> 00:10:24.600 and Jesus agrees. 00:10:26.160 --> 00:10:28.080 But as they make their way 00:10:28.080 --> 00:10:29.259 through the melee, 00:10:30.420 --> 00:10:32.840 we are introduced to a woman 00:10:32.840 --> 00:10:34.360 who has no answer 00:10:34.360 --> 00:10:38.860 to suffering or shame or separation. 00:10:39.700 --> 00:10:41.680 The very fact that this woman 00:10:41.680 --> 00:10:43.779 isn't named in this passage 00:10:43.779 --> 00:10:46.060 speaks into her situation. 00:10:46.059 --> 00:10:49.059 She has suffered with a terrible, 00:10:49.559 --> 00:10:51.599 persistent bleeding for 12 years, 00:10:52.119 --> 00:10:53.599 the same length of time 00:10:53.599 --> 00:10:55.879 as Jairus' daughter has lived for. 00:10:56.639 --> 00:10:58.799 And the stigma and the shame 00:10:58.799 --> 00:11:00.279 of this type of suffering 00:11:00.279 --> 00:11:03.919 has left her as this unnamed outcast. 00:11:03.919 --> 00:11:09.219 Her condition has caused her 00:11:09.219 --> 00:11:11.419 constant physical suffering 00:11:11.419 --> 00:11:13.740 and has brought her shame 00:11:13.740 --> 00:11:14.919 in the community 00:11:14.919 --> 00:11:17.339 and it has separated her 00:11:17.339 --> 00:11:18.539 from public worship 00:11:18.539 --> 00:11:19.939 at the temple 00:11:19.939 --> 00:11:21.779 because of her constant 00:11:21.779 --> 00:11:24.419 ceremonial uncleanness. 00:11:25.860 --> 00:11:27.659 Temple worship at that time 00:11:27.659 --> 00:11:29.740 was central to the lives 00:11:29.740 --> 00:11:30.679 of the Jewish people. 00:11:30.679 --> 00:11:32.759 It reminded the Jewish people 00:11:32.759 --> 00:11:35.459 that they were God's chosen people 00:11:35.459 --> 00:11:36.519 and it gave their lives 00:11:36.519 --> 00:11:38.000 meaning and a rhythm. 00:11:39.299 --> 00:11:41.099 For this woman to be separated 00:11:41.099 --> 00:11:42.620 from public worship 00:11:42.620 --> 00:11:43.299 at the temple, 00:11:43.839 --> 00:11:45.819 it must have seriously rocked her 00:11:45.819 --> 00:11:47.919 and caused her to question 00:11:47.919 --> 00:11:48.679 her identity 00:11:48.679 --> 00:11:50.039 as a daughter of God. 00:11:52.139 --> 00:11:53.259 So we're going to see 00:11:53.259 --> 00:11:54.399 what happens next then.
