speak to you tonight on the subject of creation care. 00:01:13.640 --> 00:01:26.519 And just before we begin the subject, I'm going to read to you just a couple of verses from Paul's letter to the Romans, just to supplement what we've already heard. 00:01:27.239 --> 00:01:30.599 This is a well-known verse in chapter 1, verse 19, which says, 00:01:30.599 --> 00:01:36.359 What may be known about God is plain to them because God has made it plain to them. 00:01:36.359 --> 00:01:51.400 For since the creation of the world, God's invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. 00:01:52.519 --> 00:01:56.319 And then in chapter 8, speaking again of creation, he says, 00:01:56.319 --> 00:02:23.979 And just further down that chapter, in verse 26, in the same way the Spirit helps us in our weakness, we do not know what we ought to pray for, 00:02:23.979 --> 00:02:30.620 but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that cannot express. 00:02:31.179 --> 00:02:39.500 And he who searches our hearts knows the minds of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes with the saints in accordance with God's will. 00:02:40.060 --> 00:02:50.000 Now may the reading of these passages be a blessing to us this evening as we consider together the subject of creation care. 00:02:50.000 --> 00:03:04.000 Let me say by way of introduction that today is All Saints Day and has been celebrated as All Saints Day by the church since about the 8th century. 00:03:04.800 --> 00:03:08.719 I was trying to find a link between All Saints Day and creation care. 00:03:09.379 --> 00:03:16.259 Been struggling a bit with that, but it did strike me when reflecting on it that many of the ancient saints 00:03:16.259 --> 00:03:23.560 were much interested in the messages of creation and in what they would have called creation care. 00:03:24.319 --> 00:03:29.419 So many of them were very committed to the animal and plant kingdom. 00:03:29.539 --> 00:03:34.259 And I think it was Sir Francis of Assisi who was not very keen about killing insects. 00:03:35.599 --> 00:03:42.039 And I occasionally try to follow that when we have a wasp in the front room by encouraging the creature to use the open window, 00:03:42.180 --> 00:03:43.899 but it doesn't always work out. 00:03:43.900 --> 00:03:52.319 However, what's maybe more relevant for tonight, strangely, is that it was on this day in 1959 00:03:52.319 --> 00:03:57.080 that the M1 was opened for the first time to traffic. 00:03:57.819 --> 00:04:02.040 And of course, the spread of motorways has certainly been a feature of my lifetime. 00:04:02.659 --> 00:04:06.000 And it has a great deal to do with the environment. 00:04:06.560 --> 00:04:09.540 And it's something that the environmental movement focuses on. 00:04:09.539 --> 00:04:16.579 So instead of M1, which was opened on this day in 1959, you might want to think about HS2, 00:04:17.079 --> 00:04:19.899 which I think is going to be built one of these days, 00:04:20.420 --> 00:04:27.539 but which has significant implications for the environment of the land through which it passes. 00:04:28.839 --> 00:04:32.519 Now, I have been challenged in preparing for tonight's subject. 00:04:32.519 --> 00:04:38.899 First of all, because I've never been asked to speak on this before. 00:04:39.120 --> 00:04:45.939 Plenty of talks I've given on creation and design and creation, but never on the topic of creation care. 00:04:46.060 --> strikes me that across my life and my association with evangelical churches, 00:04:59.600 --> 00:05:04.100 it has not been a topic that has been in any way conspicuous. 00:05:04.639 --> 00:05:10.420 In fact, I struggle to remember if I've ever heard anyone speaking about creation care 00:05:10.420 --> 00:05:17.480 and the significance of the environment, except in a rather cursory and passing way. 00:05:17.480 --> 00:05:26.140 So I think as we come to our subject tonight, there is an issue about how much attention over the years we have given to this. 00:05:26.860 --> 00:05:28.560 And I'm not being critical about it. 00:05:28.620 --> 00:05:32.700 I think there is something about creation care which is difficult for us. 00:05:33.100 --> 00:05:42.319 Just the sheer size of the created world is such that it's very hard for us to reflect on any personal impact 00:05:42.319 --> 00:05:47.120 that we might have in the very small piece of territory that we occupy. 00:05:47.480 --> 00:05:54.280 Of course, it has become recently a very prominent political issue with the rise of the Green Parties 00:05:54.280 --> 00:06:03.259 and the environmental movement thrusting itself now to our attention with environmental extinction movement. 00:06:04.580 --> 00:06:09.220 And I think it's partly because we really are not quite sure how to handle this 00:06:09.220 --> 00:06:12.379 and how as Christians to react to it. 00:06:12.379 --> 00:06:19.800 Again, I'm not sure where I would find a definitive evangelical response to this matter. 00:06:20.300 --> 00:06:27.939 But I do think as Christians who believe in God that we do sense that God is in control of the creation that he has made. 00:06:28.519 --> 00:06:32.219 And maybe we have just been content to leave it there. aspects of the environmental movement and what they would perceive as a crisis. 00:06:59.600 --> 00:07:06.120 And there is one book I've come across called Bible Theology for Life Creation Care by there have been some Christians that have involved themselves in this. 00:07:20.860 --> 00:07:24.160 And one of them in particular is Sir John Houghton. 00:07:24.160 --> 00:07:28.600 He passed away up in an evangelical home. 00:07:39.120 --> 00:07:49.140 He was professor of atmospheric physics at Oxford and was also the chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, IPCC. 00:07:49.139 --> 00:07:55.959 A group which shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 with Al Gore. 00:07:56.120 --> 00:07:57.159 You remember Al Gore? 00:07:57.599 --> 00:08:02.560 He used to introduce himself by saying, I used to be the next president of the United States. 00:08:02.879 --> 00:08:04.819 But it never quite happened for him. 00:08:05.800 --> 00:08:09.519 And then, of course, very much in the news is the young lady Greta Thunberg. 00:08:10.039 --> 00:08:16.719 The activist who has become an international personality about the urgency of environmental issues. 00:08:16.720 --> 00:08:22.380 And one of the times I heard her speak, she said, don't believe me, believe the science. 00:08:23.080 --> 00:08:30.380 And I must say that I thought there was something somewhat odd about a young 17-year-old 00:08:30.380 --> 00:08:38.759 who is motivated by something she hears from her teacher at school and becomes a world expert on environmental issues. 00:08:38.759 --> 00:08:42.600 I thought there was a degree of desperation about that. 00:08:43.299 --> 00:08:50.220 And it leaves me wondering a little bit about the coherence of the current environmental movement. 00:08:50.559 --> 00:08:51.740 No reflection on her. 00:08:52.080 --> 00:08:59.240 Just the fact that she became the focus of a movement that feels often frustrated, I found rather interesting. 00:08:59.980 --> apparently, and how life got to be as it is. 00:09:17.639 --> 00:09:22.899 It apparently has clear answers about the future of our planet and climate change. 00:09:23.319 --> 00:09:30.399 Although the follow the science school has been just a little dented over the science of COVID. 00:09:30.399 --> 00:09:38.220 Because I think we are beginning to see that following the science about COVID is not exactly straightforward. 00:09:38.220 --> 00:09:43.500 Because there are scientists who disagree about where we are and what's going to happen. 00:09:43.879 --> 00:09:50.299 But it has become very much a matter now where scientists speak with great authority on the future of the planet 00:09:50.299 --> 00:09:52.799 and what ought to be done about it. 00:09:52.799 --> 00:09:59.099 Now, there's perhaps another level that we can come to in this. 00:10:00.179 --> 00:10:07.399 And you may be surprised when I say to you to think for a moment or two about the Welsh village of Aberfan, 00:10:08.599 --> 00:10:12.259 where there was an appalling catastrophe in 1966, 00:10:12.259 --> 00:10:17.559 when around a coal mine on a hill behind the village, 00:10:18.179 --> 00:10:25.200 a mudslide started that engulfed the school and claimed the lives of scores of innocent young children. 00:10:25.299 --> 00:10:27.620 I remember my wife and I, we weren't long married at the time, 00:10:28.059 --> 00:10:33.059 visiting Aberfan and being profoundly moved by what we saw there. 00:10:33.139 --> 00:10:38.419 And it came back to me because I was reading recently John Humphrey's book, A Day Like Today, 00:10:38.419 --> 00:10:48.620 and he records that reporting on the Aberfan disaster was one of the first tasks he had as a young journalist. 00:10:49.339 --> 00:10:55.399 And it made me think about the impact on the environment that individuals can have 00:10:55.399 --> 00:10:57.319 in a scale that you can understand, 00:10:57.319 --> 00:11:05.659 because this was a scale of the environment which was being handled, I think, at the time by the National Coal Board. 00:11:05.659 --> 00:11:10.480 And if I may just read to you a piece that John Humphreys wrote about this, 00:11:11.179 --> 00:11:11.519 he says, 00:11:11.639 --> 00:11:13.360 Never was anger more justified. 00:11:14.019 --> 00:11:16.279 The National Coal Board who ran the mines had, 00:11:16.600 --> 00:11:19.759 from a mixture of deceit and cowardice and fear of retribution, 00:11:20.299 --> 00:11:23.459 tried to claim that the tragedy was an act of God. 00:11:23.600 --> 00:11:24.639 It was not. 00:11:25.179 --> 00:11:28.500 It was an act of negligence by man, 00:11:29.199 --> 00:11:31.399 criminal negligence. 00:11:31.399 --> 00:11:34.159 The politician responsible for the NCB, Lord Robbins, 00:11:34.259 --> 00:11:36.459 a blustering, lying bully of a man, 00:11:36.720 --> 00:11:39.259 had gone on television to say that the cause of the disaster 00:11:39.259 --> 00:11:41.379 was the water from a natural spring, 00:11:41.699 --> 00:11:43.840 which had been pouring into the centre of the tip 00:11:43.840 --> 00:11:48.259 and produced the water bomb that finally exploded with such devastating results. 00:11:48.699 --> 00:11:50.039 The spring, said Robbins, 00:11:50.179 --> 00:11:51.480 was completely unknown, 00:11:51.620 --> 00:11:53.519 and that was just one of his lies. 00:11:54.019 --> 00:11:55.079 Not only was it known, 00:11:55.419 --> 00:11:57.639 its presence was marked on local maps, 00:11:57.639 --> 00:12:01.460 and older miners knew exactly where it was and what the danger was, 00:12:01.779 --> 00:12:03.620 and they had been saying so for years. 00:12:03.819 --> 00:12:04.460 They were ignored. 00:12:04.879 --> 00:12:07.699 Mercifully, they had put their fears in writing, 00:12:08.120 --> 00:12:11.360 and the letters written by the miners and ignored by the NCB 00:12:11.360 --> 00:12:14.939 were eventually produced at the inquiry into the disaster 00:12:14.939 --> 00:12:19.340 so that the truth could be revealed for all the world to see. 00:12:20.120 --> 00:12:21.679 And when I read that, 00:12:22.240 --> 00:12:23.759 and reflecting sadly on it, 00:12:23.759 --> 00:12:29.379 I thought of the terrible parable that Aberfan remains. 00:12:30.120 --> 00:12:33.139 You see, it is a parable, I suggest, about at least three things. 00:12:33.620 --> 00:12:36.419 It is, first of all, a parable about a legitimate activity. 00:12:37.220 --> 00:12:38.299 It is legitimate, 00:12:38.480 --> 00:12:40.059 and as Christians we would believe this, 00:12:40.120 --> 00:12:42.460 and our readings tonight bear this out, 00:12:42.799 --> 00:12:44.519 that it is a legitimate activity 00:12:44.519 --> 00:12:47.659 to make use of the resources of the earth, 00:12:47.720 --> 00:12:52.220 and that's what the coal mining industry had done for several hundred years. 00:12:52.220 --> 00:12:56.160 Now, I'm not saying that the conditions in which miners worked were legitimate, 00:12:56.399 --> 00:12:58.019 but the activity was legitimate 00:12:58.019 --> 00:13:02.580 to use the vast coal resources of the earth. 00:13:02.920 --> 00:13:04.840 They remained vast still, 00:13:05.259 --> 00:13:10.240 and may never be used if environmentalism continues in the way that it is going. 00:13:10.340 --> 00:13:12.480 But the second thing about it is 00:13:12.480 --> 00:13:16.519 the careless disposal of waste. 00:13:16.519 --> 00:13:18.980 Now, when I was growing up as a child, 00:13:19.139 --> 00:13:22.299 I used to wonder about the coal bings 00:13:22.299 --> 00:13:24.360 that you could find around central Scotland. 00:13:24.679 --> 00:13:26.579 There used to be a spectacular one 00:13:26.579 --> 00:13:29.360 as you drove along as it was the A8 then, 00:13:29.419 --> 00:13:35.600 and saw the kind of reddish shale heaps along the motorway. 00:13:35.639 --> 00:13:36.899 I think some of them have gone, 00:13:37.019 --> 00:13:38.240 but most of them are still there. 00:13:38.779 --> 00:13:40.659 And there was no sense of the importance 00:13:40.659 --> 00:13:42.120 of preserving the environment. 00:13:42.120 --> 00:13:46.980 You just disposed of these things in the quickest possible way, 00:13:47.220 --> 00:13:49.840 and not necessarily the safest possible way, 00:13:50.240 --> 00:13:52.500 as was discovered at Aberfan. 00:13:53.200 --> 00:13:56.080 And then there was the criminal negligence 00:13:56.080 --> 00:13:59.639 of not acting on the basis of what was known. 00:13:59.860 --> 00:14:03.000 It was known that there was a stream of water 00:14:03.000 --> 00:14:07.759 running through the waste from the pit in Aberfan. 00:14:08.360 --> 00:14:09.480 People wrote about it. 00:14:09.480 --> 00:14:12.740 People asked for action, but nobody dealt with it. 00:14:13.200 --> 00:14:15.899 And of course, it was a huge water bomb 00:14:15.899 --> 00:14:17.740 just waiting to explode, 00:14:18.039 --> 00:14:21.480 which it did on one terrifying day. 00:14:22.100 --> 00:14:24.960 So that was, for me, a kind of a parable 00:14:24.960 --> 00:14:27.300 about creation care. 00:14:27.399 --> 00:14:30.580 It is legitimate to exploit the resources of the earth, 00:14:30.920 --> 00:14:32.960 but we need to be careful in doing so. 00:14:33.300 --> 00:14:35.879 We need to be careful in the way in which we dispose 00:14:35.879 --> 00:14:38.820 of some of the waste that this produces, 00:14:38.820 --> 00:14:42.420 because it can very easily scar the face of the earth, 00:14:42.740 --> 00:14:45.200 and it can be exceedingly dangerous. 00:14:46.320 --> 00:14:48.740 Now let me try to broaden that just a little bit, 00:14:48.820 --> 00:14:54.140 and to say there are some clear current challenges 00:14:54.140 --> 00:14:56.860 in the management of the created order 00:14:56.860 --> 00:14:58.480 and in the environment. 00:14:59.620 --> 00:15:01.600 And in one of these books that I mentioned to you, 00:15:01.600 --> 00:15:05.420 I found that they had four particular matters 00:15:05.420 --> 00:15:09.519 that exercise our generation. 00:15:10.100 --> 00:15:12.300 The first is, and this is not one of the night like tonight 00:15:12.300 --> 00:15:15.279 when you've driven in a rainstorm along the M8 00:15:15.279 --> 00:15:16.460 that you would fully appreciate, 00:15:16.720 --> 00:15:19.300 but the world has a severe problem 00:15:19.300 --> 00:15:20.720 with the shortage of water. 00:15:21.300 --> 00:15:23.480 The changing climate in parts of the world 00:15:23.480 --> 00:15:25.800 leads to dry, barren land. 00:15:25.799 --> 00:15:29.819 And this is a basic problem about the amount of water, 00:15:29.859 --> 00:15:33.000 amount of water available for agriculture 00:15:33.000 --> 00:15:34.740 and for human communities. 00:15:35.219 --> 00:15:37.539 And of course, it also subsumes the other problem 00:15:37.539 --> 00:15:40.399 of clean drinking water for the people of the earth, 00:15:40.479 --> 00:15:42.219 something that we take absolutely for granted, 00:15:42.620 --> 00:15:44.000 but which is a major problem. 00:15:44.699 --> 00:15:47.799 And then secondly, there is the problem 00:15:47.799 --> 00:15:51.019 of the population of the world. 00:15:51.019 --> 00:15:55.659 The population of the world has increased dramatically. 00:15:57.059 --> 00:16:01.059 In my lifetime, it has gone from something like 00:16:01.059 --> 00:16:04.319 3 billion people to 7 billion people 00:16:04.319 --> 00:16:06.159 in the course of my lifetime. 00:16:06.379 --> 00:16:08.960 And so this is a huge challenge. 00:16:09.139 --> 00:16:11.419 It's not that the planet cannot sustain that number, 00:16:11.899 --> 00:16:13.659 but it has something to do with the way 00:16:13.659 --> 00:16:15.039 in which we manage the environment 00:16:15.039 --> 00:16:18.059 and the way in which the resources of the earth are shared. 00:16:18.819 --> 00:16:20.559 And then thirdly, something that I think 00:16:20.559 --> 00:16:23.519 most of us who are city dwellers are not much aware of 00:16:23.519 --> 00:16:26.419 is that the loss of biodiversity, 00:16:27.359 --> 00:16:33.099 the total number of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, 00:16:33.299 --> 00:16:38.779 and fish on the planet has approximately halved in 40 years. 00:16:39.259 --> 00:16:41.819 Plants are also in major decline. 00:16:42.379 --> 00:16:47.619 And since 1600, about 650 known species have become extinct. 00:16:47.620 --> 00:16:52.060 In 2016, it was estimated that 26% of mammals, 00:16:52.480 --> 00:16:56.080 13% of birds, 42% of amphibians, 00:16:56.840 --> 00:17:01.440 and 40% of gymosperms, plants which include the conifers, 00:17:01.899 --> 00:17:04.619 are threatened with extinction. 00:17:05.400 --> 00:17:07.579 And the reasons for this rapid decline 00:17:07.579 --> 00:17:11.019 are the disappearance of suitable habitats 00:17:11.019 --> 00:17:15.200 and the fact that now 25% of the earth's land surface 00:17:15.200 --> 00:17:17.660 is now under agriculture. 00:17:18.079 --> 00:17:20.460 So these are significant challenges. 00:17:21.319 --> 00:17:23.299 And maybe it brings me back to my first point 00:17:23.299 --> 00:17:24.180 that as Christians, 00:17:24.920 --> 00:17:29.379 it is hard to focus on what can we do about it? 00:17:29.519 --> 00:17:31.160 What can I do about it? 00:17:31.200 --> 00:17:33.279 These problems are enormous. 00:17:33.279 --> 00:17:35.660 And the obvious way to deal with them, 00:17:35.779 --> 00:17:36.420 it would seem, 00:17:36.960 --> 00:17:42.319 is to have some political and international initiatives 00:17:42.319 --> 00:17:44.099 that can deal with them. 00:17:44.180 --> 00:17:46.099 So maybe our first thought is 00:17:46.099 --> 00:17:48.259 that that is something that we could pray for, 00:17:48.599 --> 00:17:50.720 and then it is something that if we have the skills 00:17:50.720 --> 00:17:51.899 and the background, 00:17:52.139 --> 00:17:53.480 like someone like Sir John Houghton, 00:17:53.720 --> 00:17:55.680 we might want to involve ourselves in it. 00:17:55.680 --> 00:18:00.660 Just, I think I missed one last point. 00:18:00.860 --> 00:18:03.060 Yeah, the one I missed was actually 00:18:03.060 --> 00:18:04.560 perhaps the most important one. 00:18:06.000 --> 00:18:08.460 There is also the question of climate change, 00:18:09.000 --> 00:18:11.480 which is now assumed to be 00:18:11.480 --> 00:18:13.980 an unassailable truth of our time, 00:18:14.500 --> 00:18:16.759 and I'll come back to that in 00:18:28.759 this is not an international tragedy. 00:18:28.920 --> 00:18:30.539 This is a very local tragedy. 00:18:31.220 --> 00:18:33.799 This is something that might easily have been avoided. 00:18:51.640 --> 00:18:54.100 that we could perhaps get our head around. 00:18:54.099 --> 00:18:57.379 The first is the problem of pollution. 00:18:58.539 --> 00:19:01.579 And I'm alarmed when I read of, for example, 00:19:02.039 --> 00:19:05.619 the extent to which plastics have invaded the earth, 00:19:05.659 --> 00:19:07.079 and not just the obvious ones, 00:19:07.199 --> 00:19:10.179 what people throw away their Coke bottles and the like, 00:19:10.539 --> 00:19:15.179 but also that plastics on a micro scale 00:19:15.179 --> 00:19:18.519 have to be found in our oceans and living things, 00:19:18.519 --> 00:19:19.740 in our food. 00:19:19.879 --> 00:19:24.379 I read a rather scary piece about child milk for babies 00:19:24.379 --> 00:19:27.059 having remnants of plastic in them. 00:19:27.599 --> 00:19:30.720 And this is clearly a major problem. 00:19:30.960 --> 00:19:34.460 It is a problem about how we deal with materials 00:19:34.460 --> 00:19:36.799 that we require for our lifestyle. 00:19:37.480 --> 00:19:40.059 Now I would have thought that the problem of pollution 00:19:40.059 --> 00:19:43.940 is one of the problems that should be easier to solve. 00:19:43.940 -->
