Over the last few months, we've been making our way through the book of James. 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:38.060 And James is one of those books at first glance and really for many years of my life when I read through the book of James. 00:00:38.280 --> 00:00:45.380 I think one of the reasons that I liked it so much and still many of the reasons I do today is because it's so practical. 00:00:45.380 --> 00:00:50.519 Because James does step on your toes a little bit. James does call you to do things. 00:00:50.519 --> 00:00:59.719 There is this wisdom literature aspect behind it that James makes very clear as we read through the book of James. 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:08.879 But there's no doubt about these things. But I think at the heart of this book, it's a book about faith. 00:01:08.879 --> 00:01:16.780 It's a book about faith. That faith in Jesus is going to produce a life that follows Jesus. 00:01:17.519 --> 00:01:25.459 The way that we've said it many times throughout this is faith in Christ produces faithfulness to Christ. 00:01:26.060 --> 00:01:35.719 Once we place our faith and our trust in Jesus, then it's going to produce a faithfulness in our life that we want to live for Jesus. 00:01:35.719 --> 00:01:44.620 And so while James is a book that calls us to do many things, while it is a book that is very practical, 00:01:45.079 --> 00:01:50.140 it is ultimately a book that is strengthening our faith and our trust in Jesus. 00:01:50.920 --> 00:01:53.180 James has the heart of a pastor. 00:01:53.180 --> 00:02:01.100 And even in some of those difficult topics that he addresses, he does so because he loves the church. 00:02:01.660 --> 00:02:10.020 He does so not out of a heart of trying to get a rise out of someone, not with a heart of just trying to point fingers, 00:02:10.319 --> 00:02:18.060 but he does so with a heart that loves the people, that loves the church. 00:02:18.060 --> 00:02:28.800 And so as we close out this book, you get to clearly see the heart and the importance of faith being displayed in the last eight verses of James. 00:02:29.360 --> 00:02:36.180 And so for the last time, at least for a while, I invite you to open with me to James chapter 5. 00:02:36.539 --> 00:02:42.939 We're going to start in verse 13, and we're going to close out and finish reading through the book of James. 00:02:42.939 --> 00:02:49.039 So James chapter 5, starting in verse 13, this is what the word of the Lord says. 00:02:50.219 --> 00:02:50.699 It says, 00:02:50.699 --> 00:03:18.500 And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 00:03:18.500 --> 00:03:37.139 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain. 00:03:37.539 --> 00:03:42.719 And for three years and six months, it did not rain on the earth. 00:03:42.719 --> 00:03:48.919 Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit. 00:03:49.000 --> 00:03:55.659 My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, 00:03:56.060 --> 00:04:06.419 let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. 00:04:06.419 --> 00:04:14.599 Now, before we get into this passage and figuring out what James is trying to communicate to us, 00:04:14.619 --> 00:04:21.180 I think it's helpful for us, especially with a passage like this that can be difficult to understand, 00:04:21.279 --> 00:04:23.539 that can have a little bit of controversy there. 00:04:23.740 --> 00:04:31.599 I think it's important for us to understand what this passage is not saying as we go into what it is saying for us. 00:04:31.600 --> 00:04:41.420 First of all, this passage is not an example of a healing rally or a particular healing ministry of someone. 00:04:42.420 --> 00:04:45.740 For one, this is taking place in a sick person's home. 00:04:45.879 --> 00:04:48.260 It's happening in their home where they're laying. 00:04:48.480 --> 00:04:50.100 It's happening in their life. 00:04:51.180 --> 00:04:58.180 And they are the one, the sick person is the one who is initiating the prayers to come to him. 00:04:58.180 --> 00:05:04.920 And the prayers that are coming are being offered up are by regular elders in the church. 00:05:05.540 --> 00:05:08.860 They didn't reference the apostles, which at the time of this writing, 00:05:08.959 --> 00:05:14.540 they could have referenced many of the apostles and asked for the apostles to come and pray with them. 00:05:14.819 --> 00:05:23.040 And we see that the apostles had an incredible ministry of proclaiming the gospel and also healing people as they went about. 00:05:23.040 --> 00:05:24.700 But this is not the case here. 00:05:24.760 --> 00:05:28.140 We see this as regular elders in the church. 00:05:28.580 --> 00:05:35.520 And so whatever James is describing here, he is certainly not talking about a healing service, so to speak. 00:05:36.700 --> 00:05:42.379 Next, this is not teaching that prayer always leads to healing, 00:05:42.860 --> 00:05:46.060 and especially the kind of healing that we may have in mind. 00:05:46.740 --> 00:05:51.640 We see examples in the Bible of godly sick people not being healed. 00:05:51.639 --> 00:05:55.560 Timothy, for example, he was dealing with an issue with his stomach, 00:05:55.779 --> 00:06:01.599 and what Paul told him to do was to take a little wine for the issues that he was dealing with with his stomach. 00:06:02.300 --> 00:06:05.439 And also we see in Paul's life himself, 00:06:05.939 --> 00:06:12.740 we see this thorn in his flesh that he prayed for for multiple times for this to be taken away, 00:06:12.919 --> 00:06:14.819 and it wasn't taken away. 00:06:14.819 --> 00:06:21.939 And so this is not some kind of secret formula here that is going to guarantee healing. 00:06:22.899 --> 00:06:30.879 What we must remember in this is what makes our faith strong is not manufacturing intensity, 00:06:30.879 --> 00:06:36.339 but understanding who is the object of our faith, and that's Jesus. 00:06:36.339 --> 00:06:41.359 It's not going to come about because we're trying to manufacture something, 00:06:41.439 --> 00:06:43.879 we start making promises, and we're not going to do this, 00:06:44.099 --> 00:06:47.319 we are going to do this, and then maybe we'll have enough faith. 00:06:47.399 --> 00:06:49.139 That's not the point of this. 00:06:49.620 --> 00:06:52.679 The point for us is to trust Jesus more, 00:06:53.319 --> 00:06:58.479 understanding that he does have the power and that he has the wisdom as well. 00:06:58.480 --> 00:07:08.060 If we forget this, we end up trusting in our faith and wondering if we have enough rather than trusting in Jesus. 00:07:09.000 --> 00:07:16.960 To think and to suggest that only certain people whose faith is intense enough can receive miraculous healing 00:07:16.960 --> 00:07:21.560 is both dangerous and it's not supported in Scripture. 00:07:22.439 --> 00:07:24.420 Sam Alberi, he notes it this way, he says, 00:07:24.420 --> 00:07:45.060 Some never recover from such teaching. 00:07:45.819 --> 00:07:52.180 They might reject God altogether for not keeping what they have been led to believe was his side of the bargain. 00:07:52.180 --> 00:07:58.660 Or they might reject themselves, believing that they are such spiritual failures 00:07:58.660 --> 00:08:03.340 that there is no point in trying to keep up with the Christian life. 00:08:03.780 --> 00:08:09.759 So it is not teaching that prayer will always lead to the kind of healing that we think of. 00:08:10.420 --> 00:08:17.819 That being said, there are some that suggest this passage is not referring to miraculous healing at all. 00:08:18.420 --> 00:08:21.120 And well, this doesn't seem to be accurate either. 00:08:21.120 --> 00:08:26.240 And so as we look at this, we must see the balance of what James is trying to communicate. 00:08:26.740 --> 00:08:30.439 And it's interesting to note, if you look at verses 13 through 18, 00:08:30.560 --> 00:08:33.399 that paragraph or that longer paragraph that we read, 00:08:33.639 --> 00:08:35.960 if you look at each one of those verses, 00:08:36.279 --> 00:08:40.899 you're going to see prayer coming up in every single verse. 00:08:41.500 --> 00:08:44.700 And so with such an emphasis on prayer and such a repetition, 00:08:44.700 --> 00:08:50.980 clearly James is trying to communicate to us the importance of prayer in our lives. 00:08:51.320 --> 00:08:54.180 And I think the first thing that he's trying to communicate, 00:08:54.180 --> 00:09:00.860 the first thing that he's trying to teach us about prayer is that we should pray in everything. 00:09:01.860 --> 00:09:04.320 That we should pray in everything. 00:09:04.320 --> 00:09:06.360 Listen to verses 13 and 14. 00:09:06.360 --> 00:09:27.700 James is clearly telling us to go to God in prayer. 00:09:27.700 --> 00:09:32.020 No matter what's going on in our lives, he's You know, this was what we talked about the very first week. 00:11:24.539 --> 00:11:26.180 His nickname was Old Camel Knees. 00:11:26.300 --> 00:11:32.779 And just a couple of weeks ago, we took our family up to a circus in Clarksville. 00:11:33.139 --> 00:11:38.000 Now, I don't know what you have in mind when you think of circus, but just have this in mind. 00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:40.299 The whole circus could fit on this stage right here. 00:11:40.600 --> 00:11:42.100 It wasn't a very large circus. 00:11:42.700 --> 00:11:51.000 But what they did have was they had several camels there that for a small fee, you could let your kids ride around the circle and those things. 00:11:51.059 --> 00:11:56.539 And I can remember sitting there thinking, because we're going through the book of James and seeing these camels, 00:11:56.600 --> 00:11:58.419 because you don't see camels that often. 00:11:58.419 --> 00:12:04.959 And so seeing these camels, and every single one of those camels had these giant calluses on all of their knees. 00:12:05.479 --> 00:12:08.979 From the constant getting up and down and using their knees for that. 00:12:09.599 --> 00:12:15.059 And it reminded me how incredible is it that this was James' nickname. 00:12:15.759 --> 00:12:20.839 That he was known so much for being constant in prayer, going to God in everything, 00:12:21.139 --> 00:12:24.899 that he had calluses on his knees that people began to call them Old Camel Knees. 00:12:24.899 --> 00:12:29.500 What an encouragement for us to go to God in everything. 00:12:30.399 --> 00:12:34.360 The next thing we should do in regards to prayer is to pray for the sick. 00:12:35.079 --> 00:12:35.399 He says, 00:12:35.519 --> 00:12:39.759 And the prayer of the faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. 00:12:40.279 --> 00:12:42.399 And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 00:12:42.620 --> 00:12:48.519 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another that you may be healed. 00:12:48.879 --> 00:12:53.139 The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. 00:12:53.139 --> 00:12:59.179 In verse 14, James, before this, was speaking of anointing with oil. 00:12:59.580 --> 00:13:05.580 And there's a lot of speculation around anointing with oil, and the necessity of it, or the importance of it. 00:13:05.939 --> 00:13:12.620 And the thing is, this is the only place where we see this emphasis placed on anointing with oil, 00:13:12.620 --> 00:13:15.240 which leads to a lot of speculation. 00:13:15.240 --> 00:13:24.159 But because of its infrequent use, we realize that it's not a necessity, it's not a requirement for praying for someone. 00:13:24.879 --> 00:13:27.019 Douglas Moo, he notes, he says, 00:13:27.220 --> 00:13:36.919 Anointing, whatever it signifies, is clearly subordinate to James' main concern in these verses, and that's to pray. 00:13:36.919 --> 00:13:41.959 Whether or not we use oil or not is clearly not the emphasis. 00:13:42.139 --> 00:13:47.519 The emphasis in this passage is to pray for those who are sick. 00:13:48.159 --> 00:13:49.879 And it's important that we do this. 00:13:50.479 --> 00:13:54.599 Now, we already dealt with much of what this passage does not mean, 00:13:54.879 --> 00:13:58.259 but we should never be dismissive with this passage either. 00:13:58.559 --> 00:14:01.259 We should never just think, well, since I can't really comprehend it, 00:14:01.259 --> 00:14:04.699 we're just going to assume that it doesn't mean anything to us anymore. 00:14:04.700 --> 00:14:10.140 If we go down that road, then what we're saying is that the Bible isn't relevant for us today. 00:14:10.720 --> 00:14:13.900 If we go down that road, what we're saying, what we're communicating is, 00:14:14.060 --> 00:14:17.900 is that we believe the Bible was relevant for a certain time, but not today. 00:14:18.700 --> 00:14:21.580 And if we believe that, then what's the point in studying it? 00:14:22.040 --> 00:14:25.400 Then what's the point of diving in and going into it? 00:14:25.400 --> 00:14:28.840 But we believe that these words are God's word, go to doctors, 00:14:45.799 --> 00:14:50.600 nor is it a call to only see miraculous quick healings. 00:14:51.179 --> 00:14:55.199 It's not something for us to see only for the miraculous quick Also, we shouldn't see the power in the elders that are talked about in this passage. 00:15:09.699 --> 00:15:12.179 Clearly, the elders are to go and pray, 00:15:12.639 --> 00:15:17.019 and they are honestly, I think, is one of the most incredible verses, 00:16:08.460 --> 00:16:10.900 incredible sections of this entire book. 00:16:10.899 --> 00:16:16.139 James gives an example of who we would consider a hero of the faith, right? 00:16:16.259 --> 00:16:16.779 Elijah. 00:16:17.259 --> 00:16:19.720 This is the one who calls down fire from heaven. 00:16:20.000 --> 00:16:22.480 He's challenging all the bells on Mount Carmel, 00:16:22.620 --> 00:16:24.959 and he's calling down fire from heaven. 00:16:25.319 --> 00:16:27.679 And so, yes, this is a hero of the faith. 00:16:28.019 --> 00:16:29.659 He's also one who prayed, 00:16:29.840 --> 00:16:31.519 and for three and a half years, 00:16:31.679 --> 00:16:33.740 it didn't rain because he prayed. 00:16:34.039 --> 00:16:35.379 And
