that 00:02:49.379 --> 00:02:50.039 he's a fraud. 00:02:50.620 --> 00:02:51.780 He's a con artist. 00:02:52.039 --> 00:02:54.419 He's a deceiver. 00:02:55.400 --> 00:03:00.799 And as with other times, Jesus, again, seems to know what's going on in their minds and 00:03:00.799 --> 00:03:01.780 in their thoughts. 00:03:02.799 --> 00:03:07.299 He knows that even as he speaks to them, there are some in to God, to ask God for things, to seek things from him, to seek 00:04:53.120 --> 00:04:53.840 his kingdom. 00:04:55.879 --> 00:04:59.199 If you look through the Gospels, it's an interesting thing to notice. 00:04:59.740 --> 00:05:05.699 You'll find that Jesus never once tells people to bow down in front of him and worship him 00:05:05.699 --> 00:05:08.720 or to give him glory like that. 00:05:09.620 --> 00:05:10.540 Why is that? 00:05:12.399 --> 00:05:16.439 The Muslims and the Jehovah's Witnesses are quick to jump on this. 00:05:16.439 --> 00:05:21.040 They're quick to say, look, Jesus always told people to worship God. 00:05:22.279 --> 00:05:22.719 Why? 00:05:23.219 --> 00:05:25.620 They would say because he was not God. 00:05:27.279 --> 00:05:32.659 Well, they are right about one thing and that's that Jesus did not command or tell people to 00:05:32.659 --> 00:05:33.620 worship himself. 00:05:34.920 --> 00:05:40.500 In fact, I would go even further than that and say that he did not speak or act at all 00:05:40.500 --> 00:05:44.939 for the purpose of gaining glory or winning praise for himself. 00:05:46.459 --> 00:05:49.040 But it's not because he wasn't God. 00:05:51.319 --> 00:05:56.579 We've already seen countless statements in the Gospel of John that amount to Jesus saying, 00:05:56.579 --> 00:05:58.860 I am the divine Son of God. 00:06:00.839 --> 00:06:05.620 But as a man, he lives as a man should. 00:06:05.620 --> 00:06:11.100 And so he calls people to worship God, his Father. 00:06:12.199 --> 00:06:13.139 Why is that? 00:06:14.660 --> 00:06:23.120 In some mysterious way, this is how the relationship between Jesus, the Son, the God-man, and his 00:06:23.120 --> 00:06:25.120 Father, God, works. 00:06:26.180 --> 00:06:28.519 Let's look at a few other passages to see this. 00:06:28.620 --> 00:06:30.740 And all of these are from John's Gospel as well. 00:06:31.240 --> 00:06:32.480 One of them we've already seen. 00:06:33.259 --> 00:06:34.980 John 5, verse 41. 00:06:34.980 --> 00:06:40.759 Jesus said to the religious leaders, I do not accept glory from human beings. 00:06:42.400 --> 00:06:42.620 Hmm. 00:06:43.300 --> 00:06:44.220 Why is that? 00:06:46.020 --> 00:06:52.080 Again, in John 8, verse 50, we haven't got there yet, but Jesus says, I am not seeking 00:06:52.080 --> 00:06:53.400 glory for myself. 00:06:55.600 --> 00:06:56.439 Why not? 00:06:58.120 --> 00:07:03.040 A few verses later, in John 8, verse 54, Jesus says this. 00:07:03.040 --> 00:07:08.260 He says, if I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. 00:07:09.819 --> 00:07:17.800 My Father, whom you claim is your God, He is the one who glorifies me. 00:07:19.220 --> 00:07:20.180 There it is. 00:07:20.180 --> 00:07:25.500 God the Father is the one who glorifies his Son. 00:07:26.639 --> 00:07:31.079 So Jesus is the divine Son, as we've seen all over the place in John's Gospel. 00:07:32.079 --> 00:07:37.040 Yet He has not been calling people to bow down and worship Him. 00:07:37.040 --> 00:07:43.580 Instead, He's been telling people to glorify and worship His Father, the one who sent Him. 00:07:43.579 --> 00:07:50.959 The only glory that Jesus seeks for Himself is the glory that comes from the Father. 00:07:52.259 --> 00:07:57.539 In fact, we'll get to it eventually, but in His prayer in John chapter 17, Jesus actually 00:07:57.539 --> 00:08:00.240 prays and asks God to give Him glory. 00:08:01.240 --> 00:08:03.519 He says this in John 17, 5. 00:08:03.519 --> 00:08:11.379 And now, Father, glorify me in Your presence with the glory I had with You before the world 00:08:11.379 --> 00:08:11.959 began. 00:08:13.180 --> 00:08:16.359 This is a difficult relationship to understand. 00:08:16.639 --> 00:08:17.899 I find it difficult. 00:08:18.899 --> 00:08:28.740 Even though Jesus is God, living among us in human flesh, He does not have the mindset 00:08:28.740 --> 00:08:31.259 that we would expect Him to have. 00:08:32.700 --> 00:08:38.480 Paul describes it for us in his letter to the Philippians, a passage that many of you 00:08:38.480 --> 00:08:40.120 are familiar with. 00:08:41.600 --> 00:08:52.200 His mindset was not to cling to what was rightfully His, glory, the worship, the praise of all people. 00:08:52.200 --> 00:09:07.580 No, His mindset is to humble Himself, to get down to our level, to become a man, one of us. 00:09:09.060 --> 00:09:14.020 And Paul tells us it's even more than that, to go even further down than that, to become a servant. 00:09:14.019 --> 00:09:26.620 Jesus is on a rescue mission that requires Him to lay aside, to give up, to veil, to cover up and conceal 00:09:26.620 --> 00:09:27.819 some of His glory. 00:09:30.259 --> 00:09:35.039 And to live for a time in a humbled and lowly state. 00:09:35.860 --> 00:09:41.980 And for a time to endure humiliating and even shameful treatment. 00:09:41.980 --> 00:09:49.759 And it's not until after this rescue mission is complete that Jesus will begin to receive 00:09:49.759 --> 00:09:51.680 the glory that He is due. 00:09:53.440 --> 00:09:56.920 Paul goes on in Philippians 2. 00:09:58.279 --> 00:10:03.320 He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. 00:10:03.320 --> 00:10:14.940 Therefore, because He did that, God, the Father, exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him 00:10:14.940 --> 00:10:16.860 the name that is above every name. 00:10:17.780 --> 00:10:23.560 That at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth 00:10:23.560 --> 00:10:28.260 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord. 00:10:28.259 --> 00:10:35.319 So it's God, the Father, who exalts His Son. 00:10:35.939 --> 00:10:43.000 It's God, the Father, who glorifies His Son, who lifts Him up to that place where all will 00:10:43.000 --> 00:10:44.639 bow down and worship Him. 00:10:45.639 --> 00:10:47.759 So yes, we are to worship Jesus. 00:10:47.759 --> 00:10:54.899 Even though Jesus does not seek glory for Himself from us, 00:10:55.439 --> 00:10:58.960 as He walks the earth, He is still glorious. 00:10:59.779 --> 00:11:01.259 He is still worthy of worship. 00:11:02.279 --> 00:11:04.740 And God, the Father, wants us to worship His Son. 00:11:05.080 --> 00:11:07.059 That's the trajectory of this whole story. 00:11:07.600 --> 00:11:10.360 And we've seen this already, too, in what Jesus said 00:11:10.360 --> 00:11:14.639 the last time He met with the religious leaders in Jerusalem. 00:11:15.220 --> 00:11:18.200 John chapter 5, verse 22. 00:11:18.539 --> 00:11:19.340 Jesus said there, 00:11:19.940 --> 00:11:24.779 The Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son. 00:11:25.800 --> 00:11:26.159 Why? 00:11:27.279 --> 00:11:30.000 Why has He given it to the Son to do all judgment? 00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:35.800 So that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. 00:11:35.799 --> 00:11:40.519 The Father wants us to worship His Son. 00:11:41.699 --> 00:11:46.799 And that's why He's given it to Him to do all of the judgment at the last day. 00:11:48.399 --> 00:11:52.139 Back to John chapter 7, verse 18. 00:11:53.559 --> 00:11:57.139 He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory. 00:11:58.059 --> 00:12:04.039 But he who is seeking the glory of the one who sent him, he is true. 00:12:04.039 --> 00:12:07.839 And there is no unrighteousness in him. 00:12:08.779 --> 00:12:10.139 Jesus is saying here, 00:12:10.699 --> 00:12:14.219 One of the evidences that I speak from God, 00:12:14.759 --> doing, 00:12:24.079 --> 00:12:25.259 all the things that I've been teaching, 00:12:25.379 --> 00:12:27.360 have not been to get glory for myself. 00:12:28.639 --> 00:12:31.139 In everything I've been doing and saying, 00:12:31.139 --> 00:12:35.600 I am seeking for you to glorify Him who sent me, 00:12:36.299 --> 00:12:36.819 the Father. 00:12:37.939 --> 00:12:41.439 And that's how you can know that I am no deceiver. 00:12:44.319 --> 00:12:46.759 Now I had planned to go on another few verses here. 00:12:47.639 --> 00:12:49.860 And the conversation is about to heat up. 00:12:51.220 --> 00:12:54.899 Jesus is about to publicly declare that the leaders are trying to kill Him. 00:12:54.899 --> 00:13:00.679 And some in the crowd are about to yell back that Jesus is demon-possessed. 00:13:02.159 --> 00:13:03.679 But we'll save that for next week, 00:13:03.759 --> 00:13:07.019 because there's a lot, even in this one verse, 00:13:07.319 --> 00:13:09.860 that can apply to our lives today. 00:13:10.720 --> 00:13:12.720 And we want to take time to think about that. 00:13:13.259 --> 00:13:15.620 So what do we take from Jesus' comments 00:13:15.620 --> 00:13:19.039 about not seeking glory for Himself? 00:13:19.039 --> 00:13:23.919 What can we take from this for our own daily lives? 00:13:24.919 --> 00:13:27.039 I think the important thing at the start here 00:13:27.039 --> 00:13:30.959 is just to acknowledge that this is the story of Jesus. 00:13:32.279 --> 00:13:33.980 It's not mainly about us. 00:13:35.259 --> 00:13:37.159 This is the good news of Jesus, 00:13:37.319 --> 00:13:40.500 the way that it unfolded in real time in history, 00:13:40.879 --> 00:13:42.299 generations ago. 00:13:43.459 --> 00:13:46.059 But there is still something here that relates to us, to seek glory or praise or honor from other people, 00:14:01.279 --> 00:14:03.419 and instead to humble Himself, 00:14:04.779 --> 00:14:07.599 and to obey God as every man should, 00:14:08.299 --> --> 00:14:21.460 He says, 00:14:21.940 --> 00:14:24.019 Have this mind in you, 00:14:24.460 --> 00:14:26.639 which was also in Christ Jesus. 00:14:26.779 --> 00:14:27.840 Or as some translations say, 00:14:27.960 --> 00:14:31.540 Have the same mindset as Christ Jesus, 00:14:32.240 --> 00:14:33.420 who humbled Himself. 00:14:33.419 --> 00:14:36.259 In other words, 00:14:36.579 --> 00:14:38.459 we should have the same attitude 00:14:38.459 --> 00:14:41.860 about getting glory for ourselves 00:14:41.860 --> 00:14:44.039 from other people 00:14:44.039 --> 00:14:45.839 as Jesus did. 00:14:46.860
