this morning on the cross. 00:00:19.359 --> 00:00:21.820 The title of the message is, It is Finished. 00:00:22.740 --> 00:00:25.039 Jesus, I don't know if you've ever thought about this or not, 00:00:25.120 --> 00:00:29.420 but he was a man of exceptionally few words. 00:00:29.420 --> 00:00:35.079 When I read James and he tells us we ought to be slow to speak and quick to listen and slow to anger, 00:00:35.660 --> 00:00:39.800 I get it that Jesus was such a man of very, very few words. 00:00:39.859 --> 00:00:43.480 The more words we speak, the more we get ourselves in trouble. 00:00:44.520 --> 00:00:49.560 His longest sermon is found in Matthew chapter 5, 6, and 7, the Sermon on the Mount, obviously. 00:00:50.040 --> 00:00:52.260 You can read that in less than 15 minutes. 00:00:52.260 --> 00:00:59.280 And the truth of the matter is, his longest message was shorter than most of our shortest messages. 00:00:59.420 --> 00:00:59.780 Right? 00:01:00.260 --> 00:01:04.939 Jesus just didn't use a lot of words in saying what he ever said. 00:01:05.879 --> 00:01:11.620 Interestingly, when he hung on the cross for six hours from 9 in the morning to about 3 in the afternoon, 00:01:12.099 --> 00:01:16.359 he only spoke 44 words that are recorded in English. 00:01:16.799 --> 00:01:19.480 He had seven statements he made. 00:01:19.480 --> 00:01:27.480 And just before he died, I mean just seconds before he died, the sixth saying he made, 00:01:27.640 --> 00:01:34.920 and it's one word in the Greek and three words in the English, and it's that expression, it is finished. 00:01:35.380 --> 00:01:38.320 And that's going to be the subject of our discussion this morning. 00:01:38.319 --> 00:01:44.379 And as I said a moment ago, it was one word in the Greek, tedlestai, and those who heard it, 00:01:44.799 --> 00:01:51.079 if they understood what he said and thought about it, they should have grasped the meaning of what he was saying. 00:01:51.819 --> 00:01:57.619 But when we read it in English, there's little ambivalence about that. 00:01:57.739 --> 00:02:02.339 We read that and we just wonder what was he in fact saying. 00:02:02.340 --> 00:02:07.719 Coming at the very end of his life, in fact, he's going to say this in just a moment or two, 00:02:07.859 --> 00:02:14.920 less than probably 60 seconds or two minutes, Jesus passes from this life until the next. 00:02:15.140 --> 00:02:20.099 And so in that context, I can understand how some would read the English words 00:02:20.099 --> 00:02:24.280 and would wonder what in the world was he in fact saying. 00:02:24.960 --> 00:02:29.819 You would think at face value in the English, he's certainly saying to us, 00:02:29.819 --> 00:02:32.479 well, it has come to an end. 00:02:33.239 --> 00:02:35.500 My life is over. 00:02:36.199 --> 00:02:38.359 I'm getting ready to die. 00:02:38.739 --> 00:02:41.180 I'm going to exist no longer. 00:02:41.280 --> 00:02:45.359 You could even have a fatalistic view of what he said, that this is it. 00:02:45.419 --> 00:02:48.019 There's nothing more after this. 00:02:48.840 --> 00:02:51.560 Many have read these words and they've tried to say, 00:02:51.699 --> 00:02:55.719 well, what he's saying, and maybe even some in the crowd interpret it this way, 00:02:55.719 --> 00:03:05.020 he's telling us that this plan, this scheme he's had to become the Messiah has failed. 00:03:05.960 --> 00:03:09.680 Make no mistake about it, Jesus was a revolutionary. 00:03:10.599 --> 00:03:13.860 In the very beginning of his ministry, he does a radical thing. 00:03:13.979 --> 00:03:16.599 He has John the Baptist baptize him. 00:03:17.199 --> 00:03:20.659 And then suddenly he calls these 12 men who come to his side 00:03:20.659 --> 00:03:24.159 and they walk with him and live with him each day of his life 00:03:24.159 --> 00:03:28.219 for the three and a half years that he's engaged in ministry. 00:03:28.819 --> 00:03:34.259 He has campaigns, a preaching campaign in Galilee and in Judea. 00:03:34.819 --> 00:03:38.560 There's a period of time where he's very, very popular. 00:03:39.199 --> 00:03:42.019 And then the second year, he begins to be rejected 00:03:42.019 --> 00:03:44.840 and people begin to abandon him. 00:03:44.840 --> 00:03:48.080 By the third year, there's even a lesser crowd 00:03:48.080 --> 00:03:50.980 that are following --> 00:04:11.480 This plan to reform how we worship God, 00:04:11.840 --> 00:04:13.099 it has gone up in smoke 00:04:13.099 --> 00:04:14.379 because after all, 00:04:14.780 --> 00:04:17.399 one had sold him out for 30 pieces of silver, 00:04:18.000 --> 00:04:20.420 one less than 24 hours earlier 00:04:20.420 --> 00:04:23.079 had denied even knowing him three times, 00:04:23.360 --> 00:04:27.040 and all the disciples initially had fled 00:04:27.040 --> 00:04:30.620 in the garden as he was arrested. 00:04:31.719 --> 00:04:34.420 So what in the world was Jesus saying 00:04:34.420 --> 00:04:36.159 when he said, it is finished? 00:04:36.300 --> 00:04:38.480 I wanna briefly tell you three things 00:04:38.480 --> 00:04:40.360 I think he was saying. 00:04:40.459 --> 00:04:41.100 Can I the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:05:31.719 --> 00:05:36.599 And everything that God ever predicted about Jesus, 00:05:37.360 --> 00:05:40.000 Jesus fulfilled in his lifetime. 00:05:41.000 --> 00:05:44.819 --> 00:08:15.139 and another sign until ultimately there are 300 in all. 00:08:15.719 --> 00:08:18.979 Listen for just a moment to these following prophecies. 00:08:19.339 --> 00:08:22.379 Did you know in Micah chapter five and verse two, 00:08:22.699 --> 00:08:25.319 hundreds of years before Jesus was ever born, 00:08:26.459 --> 00:08:28.659 God predicted the very town 00:08:28.659 --> 00:08:31.819 in which Jesus would be given birth, 00:08:32.139 --> 00:08:33.539 the city of Bethlehem. 00:08:33.539 --> 00:08:36.419 In Isaiah chapter seven and verse 14, 00:08:36.819 --> 00:08:39.679 again, hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of years 00:08:39.679 --> 00:08:41.039 before Jesus was born, 00:08:41.699 --> 00:08:44.699 God said he's going to be born of a virgin. 00:08:45.699 --> 00:08:48.699 The scripture said in Isaiah 53 and verse 12 00:08:48.699 --> 00:08:51.980 that he would die among criminals. 00:08:52.519 --> 00:08:55.240 In Psalm 22 and verse 18, 00:08:55.860 --> 00:08:59.759 that soldiers would cast lots for his garments. 00:09:00.419 --> 00:09:00.919 Now I want you to see 00:09:00.919 --> 00:09:02.899 what all these prophecies have in common. 00:09:02.899 --> 00:09:07.659 There's no way a person even aware of these prophecies 00:09:07.659 --> 00:09:10.379 can orchestrate these on his own. 00:09:10.480 --> 00:09:12.139 You can't control where you're born. 00:09:12.620 --> 00:09:14.659 You can't control to whom you're born. 00:09:15.039 --> 00:09:17.939 You can't control what happens after you die 00:09:17.939 --> 00:09:20.199 or what will happen to your clothes 00:09:20.199 --> 00:09:22.019 by those who are persecuting you. 00:09:22.600 --> 00:09:25.079 In Isaiah 53, nine, the scripture says, 00:09:25.459 --> 00:09:28.779 he would be buried in a rich man's tomb. 00:09:28.899 --> 00:09:30.059 And of course, in the New Testament, 00:09:30.059 --> 00:09:33.279 we find that comes to pass in Joseph of Arimathea. 00:09:33.279 --> 00:09:37.259 In Psalm 22, 16, it was predicted 00:09:37.259 --> 00:09:40.159 they would drive nails through his hands 00:09:40.159 --> 00:09:42.000 and through his feet. 00:09:42.679 --> 00:09:45.619 And then finally in Isaiah 50 and verse six, 00:09:45.859 --> 00:09:48.859 he would be beaten and spit upon. 00:09:49.759 --> 00:09:50.599 Can I tell you something? 00:09:50.600 --> 00:09:54.820 Everything that God ever said would mark his son, 00:09:55.340 --> 00:09:58.159 not to mention the hundreds of miracles 00:09:58.159 --> 00:10:00.300 that he performed, all said one thing. 00:10:00.779 --> 00:10:05.279 This is without question the son of God. 00:10:05.659 --> 00:10:07.040 So Jesus was saying, 00:10:07.180 --> 00:10:10.600 Father, every word of prophecy regarding my life 00:10:10.600 --> 00:10:12.100 has now been fulfilled. 00:10:12.100 --> 00:10:14.580 But there's a second thing Jesus was saying. 00:10:15.300 --> 00:10:17.360 It was also a cry that indicated 00:10:17.360 --> 00:10:19.639 that all the anguish and suffering 00:10:19.639 --> 00:10:22.820 was now completely over. 00:10:23.659 --> 00:10:26.779 Now, I hope I can drive this point home 00:10:26.779 -->
