00:00:17.780 --> 00:00:19.179 Powerfully, He's at work. 00:00:19.780 --> 00:00:22.219 Gloriously, He's at work. 00:00:22.219 --> 00:00:29.640 We're going to celebrate this morning the glory of God in the face of death. 00:00:31.000 --> 00:00:40.960 Now, I'll admit we've already seen some glorious things about God in John 11, this story of Lazarus we've been in for the past couple weeks. 00:00:40.960 --> 00:00:49.120 In the darkest moments, in the midst of our greatest enemy, we have the presence of God. 00:00:50.060 --> 00:00:57.460 Jesus here promising He's the resurrection and the life, so we stay near the one with the keys to death. 00:00:57.460 --> 00:01:09.019 We've had the tears of God who cries with us in our grief, in our anger because He loves us so much. 00:01:09.019 --> 00:01:14.959 Jesus wept at the grave of His friend. 00:01:16.179 --> 00:01:18.560 There's no other God like that, is there? 00:01:19.439 --> 00:01:20.060 There's not. 00:01:20.439 --> 00:01:22.640 Another part of His glory here for sure. 00:01:22.640 --> 00:01:30.900 But now this week we come most directly to the glory of God on display in the face of death. 00:01:31.319 --> 00:01:39.519 See, Jesus told us from the beginning of the story that Lazarus' illness was about the glory of God. 00:01:39.640 --> 00:01:42.500 Remember verse 4 when He said that? 00:01:42.500 --> 00:01:51.340 That means that it's about God's glory, means it's about showing us who God really is in the person of His Son. 00:01:52.920 --> 00:01:56.519 Death looms large in our lives. 00:01:56.519 --> 00:02:08.180 Death looms, illnesses, wars, lost loved ones, the fear of its certainty and its finality. 00:02:08.579 --> 00:02:10.620 It casts an imposing shadow. 00:02:11.699 --> 00:02:12.840 It seems overwhelming. 00:02:14.219 --> 00:02:20.620 But our God is bigger and greater and overcomes death to give life. 00:02:20.620 --> 00:02:24.780 We're going to see this in the rest of John 11 this morning. 00:02:25.099 --> 00:02:25.860 Spoiler alert. 00:02:26.640 --> 00:02:32.920 God's glory actually goes beyond bringing a dead man back to life. 00:02:33.200 --> 00:02:36.039 It's even bigger and better than that. 00:02:36.200 --> 00:02:40.240 But we're going to read that part now before we pray and the rest of it later. 00:02:40.480 --> 00:02:44.099 Let's pick up the reading of God's Word at verse 38. 00:02:44.099 --> 00:02:56.859 Remember Jesus, full of emotion, showing us the passionate heart of God, now stands weeping before the tomb of Lazarus. 00:02:58.479 --> 00:03:02.560 Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb. 00:03:03.099 --> 00:03:06.079 It was a cave and a stone lay against it. 00:03:06.859 --> 00:03:09.060 Jesus said, take away the stone. 00:03:09.060 --> 00:03:17.759 Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, Lord, by this time there will be an odor for he has been dead four days. 00:03:18.620 --> 00:03:24.539 Jesus said to her, did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God? 00:05:01.139 --> 00:05:01.199 Why? 00:05:02.479 --> 00:05:08.199 Well, partially, I was showing off, which is not my point here. 00:05:08.199 --> 00:05:16.599 But mostly, what I was trying to do was to tell them that they should trust me. 00:05:16.959 --> 00:05:19.539 That they should listen to me. 00:05:19.540 --> 00:05:28.160 I wanted my girls to believe from an early age that their strong dad would take care of them, right? 00:05:29.040 --> 00:05:37.340 That if any boy was bothering them, that they could know for sure that their strong dad could take him. 00:05:37.640 --> 00:05:44.259 Just like all those boys that lined up here this morning know that I could still take each and every one of them, right? 00:06:00.240 --> 00:06:10.879 Similarly, seeing the glory of God is always for our good so that we know him and trust him more. 00:06:10.879 --> 00:06:20.100 That we would stand in awe of him and worship him for his greatness and goodness that goes beyond what we could imagine. 00:06:21.240 --> 00:06:24.699 That's what Jesus is doing here with Lazarus. 00:06:25.339 --> 00:06:35.219 Notice as he flexes his muscles, so to speak, he says over and over that what he wants is for the people there to believe. 00:06:35.220 --> 00:06:44.860 Those who already do believe, like Mary and Martha and some of his disciples who are there, to have their faith in him grow. 00:06:45.160 --> 00:06:48.680 To have their vision of his greatness expanded. 00:06:48.880 --> 00:06:50.020 That's what he wants for them. 00:06:50.019 --> 00:06:59.099 And then for those who don't yet believe, to believe that he is the son of God sent to save them. 00:06:59.659 --> 00:07:04.000 To come to know the real Jesus for the first time, he wants them to believe too. 00:07:05.039 --> 00:07:06.740 That's what he wants for us. 00:07:07.299 --> 00:07:07.379 Okay? 00:07:07.379 --> 00:07:18.219 To see the glory of God clearly for the first time or afresh that we trust him in a new way in our lives right where we are today. 00:07:18.379 --> 00:07:20.300 That's where this is going. 00:07:21.439 --> 00:07:30.620 We'll see three glimpses of God's glory in this story and consider each time what impact it should have in our lives. 00:07:30.620 --> 00:07:34.019 The first glimpse is the most obvious one. 00:07:34.160 --> 00:07:35.920 It's the one we've already read. 00:07:36.720 --> 00:07:39.199 It's Lazarus' resurrection life. 00:07:40.160 --> 00:07:46.079 The man dead four days comes walking out of the tomb. 00:07:46.199 --> 00:07:47.500 Don't miss this. 00:07:47.579 --> 00:07:48.920 This never happens, right? 00:07:50.180 --> 00:07:53.819 Martha makes it clear what a hopeless situation it is. 00:07:54.079 --> 00:07:56.800 He is dead to the point of stinking. 00:07:56.800 --> 00:08:03.480 And Jesus says, didn't I tell you the glory of God was coming? 00:08:04.840 --> 00:08:12.280 Right in the midst of the most hopeless situation, you're going to see my strength, my grace, my glory. 00:08:12.480 --> 00:08:14.580 And he calls, Lazarus, come out! 00:08:14.920 --> 00:08:17.720 And Lazarus comes out. 00:08:19.240 --> 00:08:25.100 He hears the voice of his good shepherd and he follows him even out of the grave. 00:08:25.100 --> 00:08:27.800 That's how it works with Jesus' sheep. 00:08:28.040 --> 00:08:31.820 This is some kind of unique shepherd, isn't it? 00:09:09.679 --> 00:09:13.700 That's what Jesus is raising Lazarus to show us, isn't it? 00:09:13.700 --> 00:09:18.660 He tells his father, he prays not for his own benefit. 00:09:18.840 --> 00:09:20.500 God's already heard and answered him. 00:09:20.940 --> 00:09:23.759 But for the crowds looking on like us. 00:09:24.720 --> 00:09:30.759 So we will believe that he comes from heaven with divine power to give life. 00:09:31.120 --> 00:09:35.020 He delayed coming to Lazarus for that very same reason. 00:09:35.019 --> 00:09:41.220 So we would believe who he is and how strong he is. 00:09:41.279 --> 00:09:44.139 He doesn't just heal sick people, he raises dead people. 00:09:44.319 --> 00:09:48.980 So we will know that the father sent the son and we'll find our hope and our life in him 00:09:48.980 --> 00:09:51.019 even in the face of death. 00:09:51.019 --> 00:09:58.980 I don't want any of us to miss the impact of this miracle for us. 00:09:59.360 --> 00:10:04.360 Because it's showing us who Jesus is, who Jesus still is. 00:10:04.879 --> 00:10:09.819 Listen, when Jesus prays, dead people come to life. 00:10:10.240 --> 00:10:10.899 And you know something? 00:16:49.059 --> 00:16:50.399 That's who he is. 00:16:50.899 --> 00:16:53.179 Jesus doesn't just want you to know he does that for Lazarus. 00:16:53.219 --> 00:16:55.179 He wants you to know that's who he is. 00:16:55.319 --> 00:16:57.659 The resurrection and the life. 00:16:58.019 --> 00:17:01.679 Don't read the story of Lazarus and miss who Jesus is. 00:17:02.379 --> 00:17:04.339 That's the glory of God. 00:17:07.940 --> 00:17:09.279 See, that's easy to do. 00:17:09.279 --> 00:17:15.639 There were a lot of people who actually were there when Lazarus walked out of the tomb. 00:17:15.759 --> 00:17:17.680 They witnessed this miracle. 00:17:18.139 --> 00:17:21.839 From what we can tell, none of them doubted its reality. 00:17:24.099 --> 00:17:28.619 We're about to read that a bunch of them believed in Jesus because of it. 00:17:28.819 --> 00:17:30.099 What a beautiful thing. 00:17:30.399 --> 00:17:32.019 That can be you today. 00:17:32.279 --> 00:17:34.839 You can see Jesus for who he is and trust him. 00:17:34.839 --> 00:17:40.879 But some of them saw Lazarus walk out of the tomb and they saw a problem. 00:17:42.439 --> 00:17:44.720 They did not embrace Jesus. 00:17:44.899 --> 00:17:48.740 They clung to control and fear. 00:17:49.980 --> 00:17:51.359 Let's read the rest of the story. 00:17:52.839 --> 00:17:53.619 Verse 45. 00:17:53.619 --> 00:18:00.479 Many of the Jews, therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him. 00:18:01.539 --> 00:18:05.679 But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 00:18:05.899 --> 00:18:08.919 So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, 00:18:09.259 --> 00:18:10.279 What are we to do?
