00:03:37.080 It is worthy not only that every Christian should know it word for word by heart, 00:03:37.180 --> 00:03:43.180 but also that he should occupy himself with it every day as the daily bread of the soul. 00:03:43.740 --> 00:03:47.620 We can never read it or ponder over it too much. 00:03:47.620 --> 00:03:53.939 For the more we deal with it, the more precious it becomes and the better it people in the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. 00:04:33.379 --> 00:04:36.860 So I'll begin reading in verse 5 of chapter 10. 00:04:37.479 --> 00:04:40.860 Before I read, let me remind you, beloved, that this is God's word to us. 00:04:40.860 --> 00:04:43.819 It was written for his glory and for our good. 00:04:44.720 --> 00:04:50.740 And so we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and to obey its commands. 00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:52.740 Paul writes, 00:04:52.740 --> 00:05:16.660 But what does it say? 00:05:16.660 --> 00:05:20.560 The word is near you in your mouth and in your heart. 00:05:20.660 --> 00:05:23.140 That is the word of faith that we proclaim. 00:05:24.160 --> 00:05:30.960 Because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, 00:05:31.480 --> 00:05:32.920 you will be saved. 00:05:33.520 --> 00:05:38.920 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. 00:06:00.660 --> 00:06:07.939 The four at the beginning of verse 5 tells us that Paul is further explaining what he has previously stated. 00:06:07.939 --> 00:06:17.139 Last week we saw Paul juxtapose righteousness pursued by the law and righteousness that is by faith. 00:06:17.860 --> 00:06:20.639 And in verse 4 of chapter 10, Paul says, 00:06:21.199 --> 00:06:28.079 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. 00:06:28.420 --> 00:06:36.199 That is, Christ puts away any idea that we might pursue the law for righteousness. 00:06:36.199 --> 00:06:43.159 So in today's text, he's going to help his hearers understand exactly what he means in verse 4. 00:06:43.779 --> 00:06:47.779 And he's going to appeal to the writing of Moses to do so. 00:06:47.899 --> 00:06:50.899 He goes to the scripture to make his point. 00:06:51.740 --> 00:06:52.839 So look at verse 5. 00:06:52.839 --> 00:07:10.939 That is, if you desire to live a life that is pleasing to God, to be called righteous, that is to be perfect, 00:07:10.939 --> 00:07:19.879 and you pursue this righteousness by the law, then you will have to conduct yourself entirely by the law. 00:07:20.019 --> 00:07:23.079 Your very life will depend on it. 00:07:23.980 --> 00:07:30.480 Paul here is citing Leviticus 18 and verse 5, where Moses records your perfection, then you will have to be perfect. 00:07:53.600 --> 00:08:04.680 Before we proceed any further, I think at this point it may serve someone here to consider why anyone would even desire to pursue righteousness. 00:08:05.900 --> 00:08:11.300 Gospel responses must start with an understanding of our sinfulness. 00:08:12.040 --> 00:08:17.939 That we are in fact wicked and rebellious and deserve God's wrath. 00:08:17.939 --> 00:08:20.300 Romans chapter 1. 00:08:20.579 --> 00:08:24.139 Paul has laid this case out for us extensively. 00:08:24.399 --> 00:08:26.759 Let me just read to you a couple of verses. 00:08:26.980 --> 00:08:28.579 First, verse 18. 00:08:29.540 --> 00:08:30.060 There he says, 00:08:30.060 --> 00:08:37.539 The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, 00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:42.679 who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 00:08:43.159 --> 00:08:47.659 So their non-perfection, their wickedness, right? 00:08:47.659 --> 00:08:53.459 The wrath of God is what is due that kind of living. 00:08:54.919 --> 00:09:03.559 You should want to flee from unrighteousness and toward righteousness to avoid the just wrath of God. 00:09:04.059 --> 00:09:06.939 This is a thing to tremble before. 00:09:07.339 --> 00:09:10.919 That the creator of all things would say of you, 00:09:11.399 --> 00:09:13.620 You deserve wrath. 00:09:13.620 --> 00:09:18.460 God's wrath is white hot. 00:09:19.159 --> 00:09:22.620 And we have purchased it with our sin. 00:09:23.919 --> 00:09:24.980 Someone may say, though, 00:09:25.379 that there is a God, 00:09:49.940 --> 00:09:52.480 and that His wrath awaits you. 00:09:52.519 --> 00:09:52.960 Verse 20, 00:09:53.039 --> 00:09:55.000 For His invisible attributes, 00:09:55.200 --> 00:09:58.080 namely, His eternal power and divine nature, 00:09:58.539 --> 00:10:00.779 have been clearly perceived, 00:10:00.779 --> 00:10:03.299 ever since the creation of the world, 00:10:03.419 --> 00:10:06.659 and the things that have been made. 00:10:06.779 --> 00:10:10.879 So it can be seen there is a creator, God. 00:10:11.019 --> 00:10:13.000 And then Paul finishes verse 20 by saying, 00:10:13.259 --> 00:10:17.360 So they are without excuse. 00:10:17.360 --> 00:10:22.759 So we will all one day stand before God in judgment. 00:10:23.860 --> 00:10:28.100 And the basis of that judgment will be righteousness. 00:10:29.019 --> 00:10:31.759 You will either be found perfect on that day 00:10:31.759 --> 00:10:33.860 and avoid the wrath of God, 00:10:33.960 --> 00:10:35.740 or goes on into chapter 2 00:10:46.000 --> 00:10:49.079 to say that our conscience bears witness 00:10:49.079 --> 00:10:51.059 that there is a God 00:10:51.059 --> 00:10:54.259 because we have God's law on our hearts. 00:10:55.240 --> 00:10:56.799 That you have ever recognized 00:10:56.799 --> 00:10:58.220 that anything is right 00:10:58.220 --> 00:11:00.079 or that anything is wrong 00:11:00.079 --> There's evidence even within our own thinking, 00:11:12.779 --> 00:11:15.000 our own moral compass, 00:11:15.480 --> 00:11:18.200 that this God does in fact exist. 00:11:18.960 --> 00:11:21.759 And we know that we have all done things 00:11:21.759 --> 00:11:23.700 that are wrong. 00:11:25.819 --> 00:11:30.000 Righteousness should be of great concern to everyone. 00:11:31.419 --> 00:11:33.899 Trying 00:12:22.899 by our own strivings 00:12:22.899 --> 00:12:25.980 is a tyranny of the highest order 00:12:25.980 --> 00:12:28.259 and tragic for the one 00:12:28.259 --> 00:12:30.580 who does not comply. 00:12:31.179 --> 00:12:32.919 It reigns over us 00:12:32.919 --> 00:12:34.480 and it is tragic. 00:12:35.519 --> 00:12:37.259 Paul tells us in his letter to the Romans 00:12:37.259 -->
