WEBVTT

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.679
 All right, good evening, everyone. Turn with me in the Bible to Luke chapter 10.

00:00:11.359 --> 00:00:17.219
 We are going to look at one of two episodes from the life of Jesus.

00:00:18.839 --> 00:00:25.719
 And in Luke chapter 10, we're continuing our series in the gospel of Luke focused around a

00:00:25.719 --> 00:00:33.820
 theme of discipleship. And as Pastor Nick mentioned two weeks ago, if you go on the internet or if you

00:00:33.820 --> 00:00:40.659
 look around or if you go to a bookstore, there's tons and tons of books and conferences and blogs

00:00:40.659 --> 00:00:48.000
 and training programs that focus on leadership development or developing teams that work well

00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:55.120
 together. But what Jesus focuses on in these chapters in Luke that we're looking at is not

00:00:55.119 --> 00:01:03.619
 so much leadership development as follower development. Now, in one sense, you could say

00:01:03.619 --> 00:01:10.120
 Jesus actually does have leadership development in mind because his disciples are the ones who are

00:01:10.120 --> 00:01:17.739
 going to be leading the church once he dies, rises again, and ascends to heaven. So he's going to hand

00:01:17.739 --> 00:01:25.979
 it off to them and the Holy Spirit. But where he starts is he doesn't start by saying, disciples,

00:01:26.299 --> 00:01:34.159
 I'm going to train you to be a great church leader. He starts by saying, I need to teach you what it

00:01:34.159 --> 00:01:41.599
 means to be my disciples, my followers, what it means to follow me. You can't be a good leader

00:01:41.599 --> 00:01:53.019
 unless you learn to be a good follower first, according to Jesus. So that's the section of

00:01:53.019 --> 00:01:57.959
 Luke we're in. And the setting in which Jesus is teaching about discipleship is he's journeying to

00:01:57.959 --> 00:02:04.599
 Jerusalem. So he's talking with his disciples as they take this long journey from town to town and

00:02:04.599 --> 00:02:10.519
 city to city, all heading up toward Jerusalem. And Jesus teaches them in a lot of different ways.

00:02:10.520 --> 00:02:15.620
 Sometimes he just sits down and talks to them. Sometimes he responds to their questions.

00:02:16.500 --> 00:02:23.120
 Sometimes he sets an example for them in how he heals other people or how he relates to other people

00:02:23.120 --> 00:02:32.020
 or models trust in God the Father through his prayer life. So Jesus is teaching his disciples

00:02:32.020 --> 00:02:38.219
 as an ongoing process through all sorts of different ways. And what we're looking at tonight

00:02:38.219 --> 00:02:44.199
 is two stories where somebody comes up to Jesus with a question. And we're going to see how Jesus

00:02:44.199 --> 00:02:52.139
 responds to their question in Luke chapter 10. So we're looking at Luke chapter 10, starting at verse

00:02:52.139 --> 00:03:00.000
 25 to the end of the chapter. So I'm going to read that. And then we're going to just sort of go through

00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:04.240
 these two sections. And then I'm going to ask, why are these two sections next to each other? So it's the

00:03:04.240 --> 00:03:10.000
 story of the Good Samaritan and the story of Mary and Martha. Most of the time people take one or the

00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:14.520
 other and teach on them completely separately, but they're right next to each other. So I also want to

00:03:14.520 --> 00:03:18.740
 ask, why did Luke put them right next to each other? And what do we have to learn from them together

00:03:18.740 --> 00:03:26.160
 as a package? So this is going to be, it's going to be a little bit like a sermon, a little bit like a

00:03:26.160 --> 00:03:31.120
 Bible study. And if we have time at the end, I might take a couple of questions, but we'll see how the

00:03:31.120 --> 00:03:39.960
 time goes. So let's read together and we'll go through it. And behold, a lawyer stood up to put

00:03:39.960 --> 00:03:47.240
 him, to put Jesus to the test saying, teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus said to

00:03:47.240 --> 00:03:55.180
 him, what is written in the law? How do you read it? And he answered, you shall love the Lord, your God

00:03:55.180 --> 00:04:02.060
 with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and

00:04:02.060 --> 00:04:08.860
 your neighbor as yourself. And Jesus said to him, you have answered correctly, do this and you will

00:04:08.860 --> 00:04:17.399
 live. But he, the lawyer, desiring to justify himself said to Jesus, and who is my neighbor?

00:04:17.399 --> 00:04:27.500
 Jesus replied, a man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and he fell among robbers who stripped

00:04:27.500 --> 00:04:35.679
 him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance, a priest was going down that

00:04:35.679 --> 00:04:42.459
 road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise, a Levite, when he came to the

00:04:42.459 --> 00:04:51.000
 place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was.

00:04:51.060 --> 00:04:58.859
 And when he saw him, he had compassion. He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine.

00:04:59.319 --> 00:05:05.139
 Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. And the next day,

00:05:05.199 --> 00:05:12.060
 he took out two denarii, that's two days wages, and gave them to the innkeeper saying, take care of him.

00:05:12.060 --> 00:05:19.079
 And whatever more you spend, I'll repay you when I come back. Which of these three do you think

00:05:19.079 --> 00:05:27.800
 proved to be a neighbor to the one who fell among the robbers? The lawyer said, the one who showed him

00:05:27.800 --> 00:05:35.779
 mercy. And Jesus said to him, you go and do likewise. Now, as they went on their way, Jesus entered a

00:05:35.779 --> 00:05:41.379
 village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary,

00:05:41.379 --> 00:05:47.060
 who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much

00:05:47.060 --> 00:05:53.219
 serving. And she went up to Jesus and said, Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve

00:05:53.219 --> 00:06:02.199
 alone? Tell her to help me. But the Lord answered her, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled

00:06:02.199 --> 00:06:10.860
 about many things. But one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be

00:06:10.860 --> 00:06:17.740
 taken away from her. So we have two people, and they both come to Jesus with a question.

00:06:18.740 --> 00:06:23.959
 The lawyer has a theological question. What must I do to inherit eternal life?

00:06:23.959 --> 00:06:29.719
 Martha has a very practical question. Can you get my sister to help me?

00:06:33.239 --> 00:06:35.299
 Now let's look at Jesus' response to both of them.

00:06:36.899 --> 00:06:38.839
 So let's start with the lawyer.

00:06:40.259 --> 00:06:43.879
 Right? The lawyer asked a good question. What must I do to inherit eternal life?

00:06:43.899 --> 00:06:46.359
 This is a good question. It's a really important question.

00:06:46.899 --> 00:06:49.500
 Jesus takes the question really seriously. But interestingly,

00:06:49.500 --> 00:06:56.839
 Jesus doesn't give him a direct answer right away. Jesus doesn't say, believe in me,

00:06:57.199 --> 00:06:59.480
 because I've come to be the savior of the world.

00:07:01.600 --> 00:07:08.259
 Now, that's the right answer. But why doesn't Jesus say that right away? So he answers a question

00:07:08.259 --> 00:07:13.120
 with a question. He says, well, what's written in the law? What's written in the Bible? How do you read

00:07:13.120 --> 00:07:20.519
 it? Well, the man gives a good answer that shows he knows his Bible. Man says, you shall love the Lord your God

00:07:20.519 --> 00:07:27.500
 with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. That was the first and greatest commandment.

00:07:28.379 --> 00:07:33.600
 As Jesus said in another place, in another conversation, Jesus said, that's the first and greatest commandment.

00:07:33.819 --> 00:07:38.120
 And the second is like it. Love your neighbor as yourself. So the man is right on.

00:07:38.120 --> 00:07:45.780
 They're the two commandments on which everything else in the law and the prophets, they hang on those two

00:07:45.780 --> 00:07:56.220
 commandments, right? Loving God vertically, loving others horizontally. And that's the core of the moral

00:07:56.220 --> 00:08:06.259
 law, right? What God calls us to embody and to live out. And so Jesus says, verse 28, Jesus says,

00:08:06.259 --> 00:08:15.839
 you're right. Do that and you'll live. Now, there's a bit of a challenge there hidden in that verse.

00:08:16.139 --> 00:08:22.240
 It's sort of like a student, if you're a college student and you go up to your favorite professor,

00:08:22.399 --> 00:08:26.379
 let's say you're a junior in college and you say, how do I get into your PhD program?

00:08:28.079 --> 00:08:31.439
 And the professor says, well, you got to be better than all the other students who apply.

00:08:31.439 --> 00:08:39.659
 Do that and you'll get in. And then you want to say, well, but how do I be better than all the

00:08:39.659 --> 00:08:48.299
 other students who apply, right? So there's a little challenge there. And the lawyer realizes that

00:08:48.299 --> 00:08:52.879
 he's not quite comfortable to leave it there. So he says, okay, we got to define this.

00:08:52.879 --> 00:08:58.860
 Love God. Love God. Okay. Love your neighbor as yourself. So who exactly is my neighbor?

00:09:00.100 --> 00:09:07.340
 What precisely does that mean? I need to know exactly how I can fulfill this requirement.

00:09:09.720 --> 00:09:16.840
 And it says he wanted to justify himself. Means he wanted to know that he was right.

00:09:16.840 --> 00:09:25.019
 He wanted to be confident that he would make it. And Jesus responds with one of his most famous

00:09:25.019 --> 00:09:33.860
 parables, right? The story of the good Samaritan, right? So how does the story begin?

00:09:35.220 --> 00:09:39.879
 Jesus begins the story, a man telling about this man who's going down this road, Jerusalem to Jericho.

00:09:40.120 --> 00:09:44.840
 This was a treacherous road. It was a mountain road that Jerusalem was high in the mountains.

00:09:44.840 --> 00:09:49.820
 Jericho was low in the valley. And you would go down this road. And there were all these hairpin turns.

00:09:50.379 --> 00:09:56.540
 Even the road now that goes from Jerusalem to Jericho, that's now a paved road that cars can take.

00:09:57.440 --> 00:10:02.019
 It's like, it's got all these twists and turns. If you're not used to driving on that kind of road,

00:10:02.040 --> 00:10:07.160
 you don't want to drive on that kind of road. And back then it was notorious as

00:10:07.160 --> 00:10:13.560
 a dangerous road to travel. But that was the only, that was the way to get there.

00:10:13.559 --> 00:10:16.899
 If you needed to go from one place to the other, that's the road you had to take.

00:10:18.039 --> 00:10:25.279
 And this man, what happens to him? He falls among robbers. They beat him up. They leave him half dead.

00:10:27.299 --> 00:10:35.639
 Right? Immediately you hear that and you think, oh no. Right? It arouses a sense of pity. Like,

00:10:35.639 --> 00:10:40.120
 what a terrible tragedy. What a terrible thing. What's going to happen to this man?

00:10:41.580 --> 00:10:45.879
 And then the next two verses, you see these two guys come by. A priest and a Levite.

00:10:47.319 --> 00:10:48.139
 Religious leaders.

00:10:49.120 --> 00:10:53.659
 Who were supposed to be, who were supposed to, who would have known the law better than anyone else.

00:10:53.659 --> 00:11:02.519
 And what do they do? Well, they don't do anything to harm the man, but they also don't do anything to help the man.

00:11:04.480 --> 00:11:09.179
 And as you hear, you hear this story, right? This man is beat up, half dead.

00:11:09.360 --> 00:11:13.559
 And these two guys come and you think, maybe the priest will help him. Oh, no, he doesn't.

00:11:13.980 --> 00:11:15.839
 Maybe the Levite will help him. No, he doesn't.

00:11:15.840 --> 00:11:24.980
 And you also realize that, again, they don't do anything to harm him, but they don't do anything to help him.

00:11:26.960 --> 00:11:35.560
 And, you know, the point under there is loving your neighbor as yourself means more than not harming them.

00:11:36.340 --> 00:11:36.519
 Right?

00:11:38.160 --> 00:11:43.400
 Loving your neighbor as yourself doesn't mean, doesn't just mean don't do anything bad to people.

00:11:43.399 --> 00:11:49.000
 It also means to actually, actively do good for them.

00:11:51.039 --> 00:11:51.899
 Verse 33.

00:11:52.480 --> 00:11:54.539
 This is the climax of the parable.

00:11:56.699 --> 00:11:59.480
 It would have been very surprising, and I'll explain why in a minute.

00:11:59.639 --> 00:12:06.139
 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion.

00:12:06.139 --> 00:12:14.360
 Now, Jesus was talking to a lawyer, that is, a Jewish teacher of the law, a scholar of the law.

00:12:15.559 --> 00:12:21.259
 And Samaritans and Jews, for the most part, they hated each other.

00:12:22.259 --> 00:12:25.600
 At the very least, they kept their distance from each other.

00:12:26.039 --> 00:12:27.319
 They lived in separate cities.

00:12:27.799 --> 00:12:30.019
 They believed different things.

00:12:30.019 --> 00:12:31.100
 They had different temples.

00:12:31.899 --> 00:12:37.919
 And the Jews thought the Samaritans, they don't understand the law.

00:12:38.639 --> 00:12:38.799
 Right?

00:12:38.939 --> 00:12:42.699
 They, they, they're wrong about a lot of these things.

00:12:43.299 --> 00:12:44.879
 And there was a lot of distrust.

00:12:46.159 --> 00:12:52.000
 So, when a Samaritan comes along, you think a Samaritan comes along, what's a Samaritan going to do?

00:12:52.059 --> 00:12:54.100
 The Samaritan is going to beat this guy up and finish him off.

00:12:54.100 --> 00:12:56.720
 That's what they might have expected.

00:12:56.980 --> 00:12:58.040
 But what does he do instead?

00:13:00.279 --> 00:13:01.340
 He has compassion.

00:13:03.259 --> 00:13:05.240
 And his compassion leads him to action.

00:13:07.360 --> 00:13:08.560
 He goes to him.

00:13:08.960 --> 00:13:09.960
 He doesn't stay distant.

00:13:10.940 --> 00:13:12.080
 He goes to him.

00:13:12.519 --> 00:13:15.100
 He binds up his wounds.

00:13:16.340 --> 00:13:17.820
 Probably gets himself bloody.

00:13:19.360 --> 00:13:19.759
 Right?

00:13:19.820 --> 00:13:21.379
 Because what's he going to use to bind up his wounds?

00:13:22.059 --> 00:13:25.539
 I mean, pours on oil and wine.

00:13:25.659 --> 00:13:26.779
 He uses his own resources.

00:13:26.939 --> 00:13:34.059
 Puts him on his own animal, which means he would have walked the rest of the way from Jerusalem to Jericho.

00:13:34.879 --> 00:13:37.779
 Because only one person could fit on an animal, usually.

00:13:39.439 --> 00:13:40.299
 Brings him to an inn.

00:13:40.379 --> 00:13:41.100
 Takes care of him.

00:13:41.200 --> 00:13:43.039
 Pays the innkeeper two days' wages up front.

00:13:43.159 --> 00:13:45.000
 I mean, that's 40% of your weekly paycheck.

00:13:46.240 --> 00:13:46.620
 Okay?

00:13:46.620 --> 00:13:47.580
 Just imagine, right?

00:13:48.139 --> 00:13:49.539
 40% of your weekly paycheck.

00:13:49.539 --> 00:13:51.439
 You're giving that away.

00:13:52.339 --> 00:13:53.339
 And one shot.

00:13:53.480 --> 00:13:55.019
 And he says, I'll pay you more.

00:13:55.439 --> 00:13:58.539
 If you need more to take care of him, I'll pay you what you need.

00:14:02.059 --> 00:14:03.039
 Question at the end.

00:14:03.219 --> 00:14:03.860
 Verse 36.

00:14:04.039 --> 00:14:05.799
 Which of these three prove to be a neighbor?

00:14:07.139 --> 00:14:10.639
 Now, you see, the question the lawyer asked Jesus is, who is my neighbor?

00:14:10.639 --> 00:14:18.539
 That is, who, how exactly, you know, how do we limit this command so that I know I can fulfill it?

00:14:19.740 --> 00:14:22.419
 And Jesus doesn't answer his question directly.

00:14:22.519 --> 00:14:23.460
 He flips the question around.

00:14:23.539 --> 00:14:24.879
 He says, who was the neighbor?

00:14:25.500 --> 00:14:27.100
 The man says, who is my neighbor?

00:14:28.860 --> 00:14:32.480
 And Jesus says, well, no, who acted like a neighbor to someone else?

00:14:32.480 --> 00:14:36.659
 And the lawyer says, the one who showed him mercy.

00:14:37.800 --> 00:14:39.300
 And Jesus says, go and do likewise.

00:14:39.879 --> 00:14:41.100
 Now, what's the point of this story?

00:14:41.360 --> 00:14:43.000
 Why does Jesus respond the way he does, right?

00:14:43.019 --> 00:14:44.460
 The lawyer knows a lot about the Bible.

00:14:45.060 --> 00:14:46.480
 The lawyer's got the right answers.

00:14:47.039 --> 00:14:48.420
 He can ask tricky questions.

00:14:48.820 --> 00:14:51.100
 He can do the whole theological debating thing.

00:14:51.100 --> 00:15:01.220
 And he thought of himself as someone who had obeyed God's commands and who, he's coming to Jesus saying, what do I have to do to inherit eternal life?

00:15:02.340 --> 00:15:04.000
 I think I'm good.

00:15:05.259 --> 00:15:11.259
 And if Jesus had just said, well, believe in me, he would have thought, okay, well, I'll love my neighbor.

00:15:11.440 --> 00:15:12.560
 I'll love God.

00:15:12.600 --> 00:15:13.720
 And I'll believe in Jesus too.

00:15:13.820 --> 00:15:14.600
 And I'm good.

00:15:14.639 --> 00:15:15.540
 I've done everything good.

00:15:17.620 --> 00:15:18.740
 But Jesus says, no, no.

00:15:21.100 --> 00:15:23.279
 Here's what it means to love your neighbor as yourself.

00:15:23.399 --> 00:15:40.259
 It means to show costly mercy to someone else who's from a different race and a different social class and who's dirty and bloody in the middle of the road in a dangerous part of town and to pay for their expenses yourself.

00:15:41.820 --> 00:15:42.920
 Jesus is pushing him.

00:15:43.000 --> 00:15:46.080
 He's saying, I want you to actually get out there and do this.

00:15:46.279 --> 00:15:47.740
 That's why he says, go and do likewise.

00:15:47.740 --> 00:15:51.019
 I want you to actually get out there and love someone like this.

00:15:51.100 --> 00:15:53.100
 Because you know what?

00:15:53.180 --> 00:16:11.560
 If you actually try to go out and love someone like that, if you go out and spend time with people who are sick or in a mess and have all kinds of problems and need all kinds of help and have been beat up and have had all these calamities,

00:16:12.840 --> 00:16:13.740
 then you know what you realize?

00:16:13.740 --> 00:16:24.039
 You realize, man, I don't really love my neighbors myself because pretty soon I come to the end of my resources.

00:16:25.740 --> 00:16:34.560
 You sort of, it makes you realize that if you really try to do that, you realize how far you fall short.

00:16:34.559 --> 00:16:45.919
 And then if the lawyer realizes how far he falls short and says, now what must I do to inherit eternal life?

00:16:47.199 --> 00:16:47.919
 I don't know.

00:16:48.419 --> 00:16:50.259
 I haven't fulfilled all the commands.

00:16:50.719 --> 00:16:52.119
 I need God's mercy.

00:16:52.120 --> 00:16:58.159
 Then Jesus can answer him, believe in me because I've come to be the savior of the world.

00:16:58.840 --> 00:17:00.019
 And then that'll make sense.

00:17:01.399 --> 00:17:01.879
 You see that?

00:17:01.960 --> 00:17:12.119
 Jesus is showing him the mercy God requires so that he can receive the mercy that God offers.

00:17:12.119 --> 00:17:13.119
 He's doing the mercy that God offers.

00:17:13.119 --> 00:17:14.119
 He's doing the mercy that God offers.

00:17:14.119 --> 00:17:15.879
 Is what he's doing with this story.

00:17:20.659 --> 00:17:21.819
 Now, next story.

00:17:24.039 --> 00:17:24.899
 We have Martha.

00:17:26.079 --> 00:17:29.299
 The story is about Martha and Mary, but Martha is really the main character in the story.

00:17:29.419 --> 00:17:31.239
 She's the one who comes to Jesus with a question.

00:17:32.359 --> 00:17:34.259
 Martha is not asking a theological question.

00:17:34.759 --> 00:17:37.259
 She's asking a very practical question.

00:17:37.359 --> 00:17:38.779
 She's saying, don't you care, Jesus?

00:17:38.859 --> 00:17:40.519
 I'm doing all this work by myself.

00:17:40.619 --> 00:17:41.500
 I need some help.

00:17:42.119 --> 00:17:45.319
 Now, Martha was doing some good things.

00:17:45.399 --> 00:17:47.000
 She welcomed Jesus into her house.

00:17:47.659 --> 00:17:48.939
 She's an example of hospitality.

00:17:49.619 --> 00:17:51.339
 She was engaged in much serving.

00:17:51.979 --> 00:17:52.939
 That's a good thing.

00:17:54.899 --> 00:17:59.339
 Hospitality and serving, but it says she was distracted with her serving.

00:17:59.419 --> 00:18:04.139
 She was running here and there in a flurry of anxiety and forgetting the most important thing.

00:18:04.219 --> 00:18:06.459
 What's the most important thing about showing hospitality?

00:18:07.839 --> 00:18:09.599
 It's being attentive to your guest.

00:18:12.119 --> 00:18:13.059
 It's not all the things.

00:18:14.059 --> 00:18:19.119
 It's not how clean your house is or how well cooked the food is or all those other things.

00:18:19.199 --> 00:18:24.000
 It's being attentive to the person that you're welcoming into your house.

00:18:24.000 --> 00:18:30.779
 And Jesus is saying, Martha, you're forgetting the most important thing.

00:18:32.660 --> 00:18:36.940
 And Jesus' answer to Martha, again, would have been surprising, like his answer to the lawyer.

00:18:38.400 --> 00:18:38.740
 Right?

00:18:38.819 --> 00:18:42.200
 I mean, we might think Jesus would say, okay, why don't you take turns?

00:18:43.000 --> 00:18:43.319
 Right?

00:18:43.319 --> 00:18:46.139
 You and Mary, you take turns.

00:18:46.599 --> 00:18:46.779
 Right?

00:18:46.879 --> 00:18:50.079
 That's how we try to be fair about things today.

00:18:50.159 --> 00:18:50.359
 Right?

00:18:51.720 --> 00:19:07.139
 In the culture Jesus lived in, people would have been inclined to say, well, Mary, you're a woman, so you should go into the kitchen and wash the dishes and let the men have the theological conversations with the teacher.

00:19:07.140 --> 00:19:13.920
 And Jesus actually is saying, no, I care.

00:19:14.060 --> 00:19:15.259
 I want women to learn too.

00:19:16.540 --> 00:19:19.040
 I want women to learn the truth about God.

00:19:19.640 --> 00:19:21.740
 And I'm going to invest time in teaching them.

00:19:25.340 --> 00:19:27.000
 You know, and we see this, right?

00:19:27.100 --> 00:19:27.820
 Now, it's true.

00:19:27.900 --> 00:19:29.340
 Jesus' 12 apostles were male.

00:19:30.060 --> 00:19:30.460
 Right?

00:19:30.540 --> 00:19:34.780
 And Jesus affirmed the importance of male leadership in the church, I think.

00:19:34.779 --> 00:19:38.879
 But we also see Jesus had a group of women who followed him.

00:19:39.359 --> 00:19:43.859
 And he invested time in teaching them and training them and equipping them.

00:19:44.599 --> 00:19:48.200
 And that was not the norm in his patriarchal society.

00:19:49.180 --> 00:19:54.740
 So Jesus valued women as his followers along with men.

00:19:57.220 --> 00:20:00.879
 So listen to Jesus and sit at his feet.

00:20:01.059 --> 00:20:01.139
 Right?

00:20:01.139 --> 00:20:03.960
 That's what Jesus is inviting Martha to do.

00:20:05.220 --> 00:20:06.599
 So here's these two stories.

00:20:07.859 --> 00:20:08.259
 Right?

00:20:08.319 --> 00:20:09.980
 They seem to be pretty separate from each other.

00:20:10.059 --> 00:20:11.279
 They seem to have two different points.

00:20:11.359 --> 00:20:12.139
 But they're right together.

00:20:12.279 --> 00:20:15.440
 And so I want to end by saying, why does Luke put these stories right together?

00:20:15.539 --> 00:20:17.019
 What can we learn from them as a package?

00:20:18.099 --> 00:20:21.559
 Let me close with two or three things.

00:20:21.779 --> 00:20:23.559
 One, discipleship.

00:20:23.960 --> 00:20:24.180
 Right?

00:20:24.259 --> 00:20:27.079
 That's the focus of this teaching series.

00:20:27.200 --> 00:20:30.299
 And that's the focus of this section of Luke.

00:20:30.299 --> 00:20:35.460
 Discipleship includes both giving to others and receiving from God.

00:20:37.079 --> 00:20:44.480
 It includes both showing mercy in practical and even sacrificial ways.

00:20:44.480 --> 00:20:48.740
 And it includes listening to Jesus' teaching.

00:20:49.079 --> 00:20:51.140
 That is, taking in the Bible.

00:20:53.460 --> 00:20:57.839
 And the lawyer has a lot of Bible knowledge and a lot of intellectual skills.

00:20:57.839 --> 00:21:06.379
 And Jesus says, no, you actually need to show mercy in concrete and practical ways to people who are suffering.

00:21:06.380 --> 00:21:19.060
 Because I need to teach you some things that you're only going to learn as you seek to love your neighbor as yourself by showing mercy to people who are in need.

00:21:19.059 --> 00:21:31.639
 When you take that command seriously, you will eventually be humbled and realize you're not going to be able to justify yourself anymore.

00:21:31.740 --> 00:21:34.159
 You're going to be humbled by that.

00:21:35.000 --> 00:21:38.799
 And so you'll be in a place where then you can understand the mercy that God is offering.

00:21:40.740 --> 00:21:40.879
 Okay?

00:21:41.000 --> 00:21:44.019
 So Martha, on the other hand, Martha's on the other end.

00:21:44.119 --> 00:21:44.200
 Right?

00:21:44.259 --> 00:21:45.440
 Martha's doing a ton of serving.

00:21:46.019 --> 00:21:46.940
 She's really active.

00:21:47.059 --> 00:21:48.039
 She's doing hospitality.

00:21:48.039 --> 00:21:52.019
 She's serving and doing all kinds of activity.

00:21:52.460 --> 00:21:55.039
 And Jesus says, but you also need to receive.

00:21:56.259 --> 00:21:58.200
 You can't just be giving all the time.

00:21:59.759 --> 00:22:01.920
 You need to give and receive.

00:22:02.859 --> 00:22:04.379
 So that's what we see in these two stories.

00:22:04.460 --> 00:22:07.440
 We need to give to others and receive from God.

00:22:07.920 --> 00:22:09.920
 That's what it means to be a disciple of Jesus.

00:22:12.180 --> 00:22:15.420
 The lawyer needs to know it's impossible to love God without loving people.

00:22:15.420 --> 00:22:20.120
 Martha needs to realize it's impossible to love people without loving God and putting him first.

00:22:22.120 --> 00:22:23.360
 So that's the first point.

00:22:23.680 --> 00:22:30.019
 Second, discipleship is not a one-size-fits-all package.

00:22:31.120 --> 00:22:31.279
 Okay?

00:22:31.360 --> 00:22:36.120
 Jesus responds to the two people in two different situations with two different prescriptions.

00:22:36.119 --> 00:22:37.419
 He's like a wise doctor.

00:22:38.459 --> 00:22:38.659
 Right?

00:22:38.699 --> 00:22:43.059
 A wise doctor doesn't just give the same prescription to anybody who comes and says,

00:22:43.159 --> 00:22:44.000
 I'm feeling some pain.

00:22:44.500 --> 00:22:45.500
 Take some Tylenol.

00:22:46.139 --> 00:22:46.399
 Right?

00:22:46.719 --> 00:22:52.979
 No, a wise doctor actually realizes that different conditions need a different medicine.

00:22:53.099 --> 00:22:54.159
 Now, the goal is the same.

00:22:54.219 --> 00:22:59.259
 The goal is that the lawyer and Martha would become mature followers of Jesus.

00:22:59.919 --> 00:23:01.079
 The goal is the same.

00:23:01.079 --> 00:23:04.839
 But isn't Jesus so wise?

00:23:06.299 --> 00:23:14.659
 Jesus doesn't say, you know, what the lawyer probably would have wanted is something that he thinks he can do well.

00:23:15.799 --> 00:23:16.259
 Right?

00:23:16.859 --> 00:23:18.759
 A Bible training program.

00:23:19.579 --> 00:23:23.099
 Go to seminary and then you can inherit eternal life.

00:23:23.099 --> 00:23:24.959
 And the lawyer would have thought, oh, yeah.

00:23:26.099 --> 00:23:30.399
 I can read and study and learn and be an expert.

00:23:30.899 --> 00:23:31.959
 I'll be good.

00:23:32.719 --> 00:23:35.379
 No, Jesus tells the lawyer to do something that's really hard for him.

00:23:36.500 --> 00:23:38.679
 Go and serve someone in need.

00:23:39.779 --> 00:23:41.699
 In the way that the Samaritan did.

00:23:42.119 --> 00:23:45.019
 Someone who is your natural enemy.

00:23:45.879 --> 00:23:50.659
 Like the Samaritans and the Jews had enmity with each other.

00:23:50.660 --> 00:23:53.160
 And Jesus says, go and serve someone like that.

00:23:53.759 --> 00:23:54.680
 A hard thing.

00:23:55.120 --> 00:24:02.100
 And yet through that hard thing, Jesus is going to, if the lawyer takes him up on that, Jesus is going to teach him what it means to be a follower of him.

00:24:02.660 --> 00:24:06.120
 And with Martha, Jesus also tells her to do a hard thing.

00:24:08.660 --> 00:24:12.500
 Jesus doesn't just say, okay, Martha, I'll find you some help.

00:24:12.720 --> 00:24:13.800
 I see you're stressed out.

00:24:14.100 --> 00:24:15.600
 I'll get you someone else to help you.

00:24:16.160 --> 00:24:17.060
 Jesus says, no, no, no.

00:24:17.060 --> 00:24:19.580
 Martha, your priorities are misplaced.

00:24:19.579 --> 00:24:22.599
 You need to sit and listen to Jesus.

00:24:22.799 --> 00:24:25.379
 And for some people, that's the hardest thing to do.

00:24:25.579 --> 00:24:31.740
 Is to stop serving and simply listen to Jesus.

00:24:32.079 --> 00:24:34.819
 And abide in him and receive from him.

00:24:35.879 --> 00:24:38.699
 Because receiving is also a humbling thing.

00:24:38.779 --> 00:24:44.839
 Just like loving someone sacrificially can be a humbling experience because it's really hard to do.

00:24:44.839 --> 00:24:50.839
 Sitting and listening to Jesus is a humbling experience because we say, I need to receive from you.

00:24:50.839 --> 00:24:56.899
 So what would Jesus say to you?

00:25:00.319 --> 00:25:01.419
 Are you more like the lawyer?

00:25:03.500 --> 00:25:05.119
 Maybe you have a lot of Bible knowledge.

00:25:05.539 --> 00:25:07.099
 You like theological debates.

00:25:07.099 --> 00:25:10.779
 You can ask some tricky questions and you know some right answers.

00:25:11.279 --> 00:25:19.259
 And Jesus says, spend some time on the road to Jericho where people are beaten up and bruised and hurting.

00:25:21.259 --> 00:25:23.399
 And learn to love them by showing mercy.

00:25:23.400 --> 00:25:28.060
 And that's what will make you a mature disciple of Jesus.

00:25:29.960 --> 00:25:36.700
 Because as you seek to show mercy to others, you'll be humbled to realize the mercy that you need from God.

00:25:36.800 --> 00:25:46.400
 That you're actually, spiritually speaking, you'll realize that I am actually like that man who's beaten up and lying in the middle of the road and needing help.

00:25:46.400 --> 00:25:49.480
 And that's actually my condition before God.

00:25:49.800 --> 00:25:59.220
 And Jesus comes like the Samaritan and gives of his riches and saves us and brings us home.

00:26:01.840 --> 00:26:03.400
 Or are you more like Martha?

00:26:04.300 --> 00:26:06.940
 Are you distracted with a lot of serving?

00:26:07.060 --> 00:26:11.380
 Are you just going and going and going and active and you just can't stop?

00:26:11.380 --> 00:26:22.160
 And sometimes you might not even realize it, but you might be interrupting other people who are just trying to listen to Jesus because you're like, your life is so crazy and chaotic.

00:26:22.600 --> 00:26:28.240
 And you've probably added your own expectations into the legitimate responsibilities that you have.

00:26:28.280 --> 00:26:31.700
 And you have these high standards that some of them God probably doesn't even care about.

00:26:33.140 --> 00:26:36.400
 Like exactly how clean the house is every single day.

00:26:36.900 --> 00:26:37.060
 Right?

00:26:37.140 --> 00:26:37.760
 Or whatever.

00:26:38.280 --> 00:26:39.760
 I don't mean to pick on house cleaning.

00:26:39.960 --> 00:26:40.040
 Right?

00:26:40.039 --> 00:26:43.180
 It's God bless you, all you who keep a clean house.

00:26:43.359 --> 00:26:44.839
 And we try to as well.

00:26:45.099 --> 00:26:46.960
 But, but, right.

00:26:47.019 --> 00:26:51.259
 But sometimes we add on these expectations to ourselves that actually God doesn't have.

00:26:52.079 --> 00:26:54.339
 And so we get ourselves all stressed out and anxious.

00:26:54.680 --> 00:26:59.299
 And Jesus says, you need to stop and listen to me.

00:27:00.920 --> 00:27:03.440
 Because that is the way you're going to get your priorities straight.

00:27:03.440 --> 00:27:05.900
 Jesus says, abide in me.

00:27:06.580 --> 00:27:07.920
 My words abide in you.

00:27:08.600 --> 00:27:10.320
 And you'll bear much fruit as my disciples.

00:27:13.580 --> 00:27:17.039
 So both of these stories show us the truth of the gospel.

00:27:17.460 --> 00:27:17.640
 Right?

00:27:17.700 --> 00:27:22.000
 The Samaritan is a picture of what Christ has come to do for us.

00:27:22.000 --> 00:27:26.599
 And when we seek to show mercy to others, we realize the kind of mercy we need from God.

00:27:27.559 --> 00:27:29.920
 And we learn about the gospel that way.

00:27:30.339 --> 00:27:33.220
 Mary and Martha, we see that we just need to depend on Jesus.

00:27:34.000 --> 00:27:35.299
 Our life comes from him.

00:27:35.359 --> 00:27:36.940
 Our life comes from abiding in him.

00:27:36.940 --> 00:27:46.220
 So that's what I think we can take from these two passages.

00:27:46.940 --> 00:27:49.480
 Let me take five minutes.

00:27:49.720 --> 00:27:51.420
 If you have questions or comments.

00:27:51.920 --> 00:27:55.360
 I'll take a couple questions or comments before our closing song.

00:27:56.100 --> 00:27:57.660
 If there are any.

00:27:58.180 --> 00:27:59.660
 On these two passages.

00:28:01.360 --> 00:28:03.380
 So just raise your hand if you have something.

00:28:04.960 --> 00:28:05.539
 And then we'll.

00:28:06.940 --> 00:28:08.680
 Move on in just a couple minutes.

00:28:10.820 --> 00:28:11.420
 Karen.

00:28:14.700 --> 00:28:15.860
 It's called.

00:28:16.820 --> 00:28:19.320
 Having a Mary's Heart in a Martha's World.

00:28:20.180 --> 00:28:22.460
 Having a Mary's Heart in a Martha's World.

00:28:22.820 --> 00:28:23.720
 Great book.

00:28:25.380 --> 00:28:26.600
 I haven't read it.

00:28:26.680 --> 00:28:28.360
 But there's a recommendation for it.

00:28:31.120 --> 00:28:31.680
 Elizabeth.

00:28:33.160 --> 00:28:36.160
 Do you think there's any gender implications.

00:28:36.160 --> 00:28:37.720
 In these two stories.

00:28:38.720 --> 00:28:39.240
 Where.

00:28:40.440 --> 00:28:42.460
 Now I'm really going to.

00:28:42.779 --> 00:28:43.340
 Say.

00:28:43.580 --> 00:28:44.980
 Politically incorrect stuff.

00:28:44.980 --> 00:28:47.680
 Where women are constantly serving.

00:28:47.800 --> 00:28:48.100
 Serving.

00:28:48.240 --> 00:28:48.540
 Serving.

00:28:48.680 --> 00:28:50.000
 The necessity of home.

00:28:50.680 --> 00:28:51.600
 Serving family.

00:28:51.900 --> 00:28:52.259
 Children.

00:28:52.620 --> 00:28:53.060
 Cooking.

00:28:53.560 --> 00:28:54.300
 Groceries.

00:28:55.040 --> 00:28:55.420
 You know.

00:28:55.600 --> 00:28:56.100
 Laundry.

00:28:56.220 --> 00:28:56.900
 The whole work.

00:28:56.900 --> 00:28:57.580
 And men.

00:28:57.580 --> 00:28:59.580
 And men.

00:29:01.519 --> 00:29:02.580
 Probably don't.

00:29:03.320 --> 00:29:04.140
 Aren't into that.

00:29:04.380 --> 00:29:05.780
 Serving category.

00:29:07.780 --> 00:29:08.780
 As much.

00:29:09.640 --> 00:29:10.519
 So I'm wondering.

00:29:10.780 --> 00:29:12.160
 Are there gender implications.

00:29:12.380 --> 00:29:13.400
 What do you think about that?

00:29:13.840 --> 00:29:14.920
 That's a great question.

00:29:15.040 --> 00:29:16.460
 Are there gender implications.

00:29:16.460 --> 00:29:17.640
 In these stories.

00:29:17.860 --> 00:29:18.560
 Are women.

00:29:18.880 --> 00:29:19.700
 Constantly serving.

00:29:19.820 --> 00:29:20.040
 Serving.

00:29:20.160 --> 00:29:20.440
 Serving.

00:29:20.440 --> 00:29:21.440
 Especially in the home.

00:29:22.700 --> 00:29:23.640
 Or with children.

00:29:24.460 --> 00:29:24.820
 And.

00:29:25.220 --> 00:29:26.580
 Is that maybe less true of men?

00:29:26.700 --> 00:29:26.980
 Okay.

00:29:27.259 --> 00:29:28.100
 Great question.

00:29:30.100 --> 00:29:31.039
 I love Q&A.

00:29:31.120 --> 00:29:31.480
 Because it's.

00:29:31.940 --> 00:29:32.340
 Yeah.

00:29:33.200 --> 00:29:34.039
 Sometimes I'm like.

00:29:34.080 --> 00:29:35.279
 I need to think more about that question.

00:29:35.580 --> 00:29:35.799
 So.

00:29:35.799 --> 00:29:37.180
 Here's what I'd say.

00:29:38.659 --> 00:29:39.519
 I think.

00:29:39.960 --> 00:29:40.480
 That there.

00:29:40.599 --> 00:29:41.319
 There may be.

00:29:41.319 --> 00:29:43.099
 Some common patterns here.

00:29:43.639 --> 00:29:43.879
 From.

00:29:44.000 --> 00:29:44.779
 In these stories.

00:29:46.019 --> 00:29:47.000
 I wouldn't want to say.

00:29:47.099 --> 00:29:47.480
 This is.

00:29:47.720 --> 00:29:48.919
 Always true for all men.

00:29:48.980 --> 00:29:49.940
 And always true for all women.

00:29:49.980 --> 00:29:50.759
 That's not what these.

00:29:50.839 --> 00:29:51.559
 Stories are teaching.

00:29:51.680 --> 00:29:52.639
 They're particular examples.

00:29:53.240 --> 00:29:53.639
 But.

00:29:53.879 --> 00:29:54.759
 There might be something.

00:29:54.759 --> 00:29:56.099
 In the story about Martha.

00:29:56.680 --> 00:29:57.759
 That might be.

00:29:58.259 --> 00:29:59.180
 Particularly applicable.

00:29:59.980 --> 00:30:01.079
 To many women.

00:30:01.319 --> 00:30:01.440
 Right.

00:30:02.299 --> 00:30:02.700
 Anxiety.

00:30:04.139 --> 00:30:04.639
 You know.

00:30:04.700 --> 00:30:05.180
 A sense of.

00:30:05.180 --> 00:30:05.759
 I have to.

00:30:05.940 --> 00:30:06.720
 Always be serving.

00:30:08.240 --> 00:30:08.519
 So.

00:30:09.920 --> 00:30:11.400
 This is part of why I say.

00:30:11.539 --> 00:30:12.440
 And Luke actually.

00:30:12.539 --> 00:30:12.920
 Interestingly.

00:30:13.160 --> 00:30:13.380
 Luke.

00:30:13.560 --> 00:30:14.440
 In the gospel of Luke.

00:30:14.500 --> 00:30:15.340
 And in the book of Acts.

00:30:15.640 --> 00:30:16.299
 Luke often.

00:30:16.600 --> 00:30:17.320
 Pairs together.

00:30:17.640 --> 00:30:18.860
 A story about.

00:30:19.180 --> 00:30:19.740
 A man.

00:30:20.960 --> 00:30:22.039
 And a story about a woman.

00:30:22.799 --> 00:30:23.160
 And.

00:30:23.380 --> 00:30:24.279
 So you see that.

00:30:24.340 --> 00:30:24.779
 For example.

00:30:25.000 --> 00:30:25.740
 In Acts.

00:30:25.860 --> 00:30:26.100
 With.

00:30:26.299 --> 00:30:27.000
 The story of Aeneas.

00:30:27.039 --> 00:30:28.080
 Who's a disabled man.

00:30:28.340 --> 00:30:29.340
 And the story of Dorcas.

00:30:29.400 --> 00:30:30.000
 Or Tabitha.

00:30:30.560 --> 00:30:31.279
 Who's the.

00:30:31.380 --> 00:30:32.440
 Woman who is serving.

00:30:33.140 --> 00:30:34.460
 And how Jesus restores.

00:30:34.580 --> 00:30:35.060
 Both of them.

00:30:36.160 --> 00:30:37.080
 And works powerfully.

00:30:37.140 --> 00:30:37.440
 In both of them.

00:30:37.440 --> 00:30:37.860
 And here.

00:30:38.039 --> 00:30:39.080
 I think you see Jesus.

00:30:39.380 --> 00:30:40.480
 Speaking to this man.

00:30:41.279 --> 00:30:42.080
 Who has his.

00:30:42.180 --> 00:30:42.660
 His issue.

00:30:42.720 --> 00:30:43.039
 And a woman.

00:30:43.160 --> 00:30:43.799
 Who has hers.

00:30:44.200 --> 00:30:44.420
 So.

00:30:45.860 --> 00:30:46.220
 So.

00:30:46.440 --> 00:30:46.680
 So.

00:30:46.759 --> 00:30:47.019
 I think.

00:30:47.180 --> 00:30:49.200
 I think the reason Luke is giving us these pictures.

00:30:49.200 --> 00:30:51.460
 Is not to say that all men are like the lawyer.

00:30:51.519 --> 00:30:52.539
 And all women are like Martha.

00:30:53.400 --> 00:30:53.759
 Which.

00:30:53.759 --> 00:30:55.680
 I don't think that's what you're saying either.

00:30:55.680 --> 00:30:55.940
 But.

00:30:57.140 --> 00:31:00.000
 But it's to give us pictures of different kinds of people.

00:31:00.599 --> 00:31:00.740
 You know.

00:31:00.799 --> 00:31:02.759
 That's what I think is so amazing about the gospels.

00:31:02.940 --> 00:31:03.160
 Is.

00:31:03.759 --> 00:31:06.799
 We see pictures of all different kinds of people.

00:31:07.019 --> 00:31:08.740
 Who have all different kinds of issues.

00:31:08.740 --> 00:31:09.779
 And some of them.

00:31:10.019 --> 00:31:11.799
 You'll be able to relate to.

00:31:12.079 --> 00:31:13.579
 More easily than others.

00:31:13.720 --> 00:31:15.000
 And some of them you'll be like.

00:31:15.059 --> 00:31:16.400
 I see myself there.

00:31:17.040 --> 00:31:18.920
 And I think it's powerful because.

00:31:19.400 --> 00:31:20.560
 We don't just have in the Bible.

00:31:20.680 --> 00:31:21.480
 We don't just have.

00:31:21.740 --> 00:31:22.980
 Like a law code.

00:31:23.100 --> 00:31:24.060
 Like a list of rules.

00:31:24.880 --> 00:31:26.220
 That are just sort of general.

00:31:26.620 --> 00:31:27.800
 And have no specific.

00:31:28.560 --> 00:31:28.960
 Pictures.

00:31:29.140 --> 00:31:31.420
 But I think what we see is pictures of discipleship.

00:31:32.200 --> 00:31:32.480
 And.

00:31:33.180 --> 00:31:33.540
 So.

00:31:35.320 --> 00:31:35.940
 So I.

00:31:36.019 --> 00:31:37.980
 I think you may find that you relate to.

00:31:38.180 --> 00:31:39.560
 Some of them more than others.

00:31:41.640 --> 00:31:42.240
 And they're.

00:31:42.340 --> 00:31:43.880
 And they're both men and women for that reason.

00:31:44.580 --> 00:31:44.940
 But.

00:31:44.940 --> 00:31:47.759
 I wouldn't want to go any further than that.

00:31:48.660 --> 00:31:49.460
 Any other questions?

00:31:49.539 --> 00:31:49.740
 Peter.

00:31:51.740 --> 00:31:53.640
 And you were looking at.

00:31:54.920 --> 00:31:57.059
 The parable of the Good Samaritan.

00:31:58.160 --> 00:31:59.220
 Did you come to it.

00:31:59.279 --> 00:31:59.680
 Thinking.

00:32:00.039 --> 00:32:01.080
 That the takeaway.

00:32:01.259 --> 00:32:02.660
 That Jesus intended for his heroes.

00:32:02.840 --> 00:32:03.680
 Was that for the hero.

00:32:03.840 --> 00:32:03.960
 To.

00:32:03.960 --> 00:32:04.380
 To.

00:32:04.840 --> 00:32:05.980
 To identify with.

00:32:06.799 --> 00:32:07.980
 The person who was.

00:32:08.279 --> 00:32:08.860
 Half dead.

00:32:09.620 --> 00:32:11.140
 And in need of salvation.

00:32:12.180 --> 00:32:12.340
 That.

00:32:12.519 --> 00:32:14.000
 It struck me when you were preaching it that way.

00:32:14.000 --> 00:32:15.799
 Because I always took that parable.

00:32:16.000 --> 00:32:16.119
 To.

00:32:16.279 --> 00:32:17.279
 To be more or less.

00:32:18.599 --> 00:32:19.940
 A condemnation of Israel.

00:32:20.480 --> 00:32:21.960
 A condemnation of the priest.

00:32:22.019 --> 00:32:22.619
 And the Levite.

00:32:22.980 --> 00:32:23.740
 It's not coincidental.

00:32:23.740 --> 00:32:24.839
 That the man who asked the question.

00:32:24.980 --> 00:32:26.599
 Would have been an interpreter of the law.

00:32:27.200 --> 00:32:27.400
 And.

00:32:28.400 --> 00:32:28.819
 You know.

00:32:28.819 --> 00:32:31.179
 Is that something that you thought about.

00:32:31.419 --> 00:32:31.939
 Is that something.

00:32:32.139 --> 00:32:33.740
 The way you've always interpreted that parable.

00:32:33.839 --> 00:32:34.740
 When you're preparing for the sermon.

00:32:34.839 --> 00:32:35.939
 Did you see this in a new way.

00:32:36.000 --> 00:32:36.539
 Or did you.

00:32:36.899 --> 00:32:37.700
 You're aware of the.

00:32:38.359 --> 00:32:39.899
 Kind of the Israel component to it.

00:32:40.039 --> 00:32:41.379
 And just focus on this other end.

00:32:41.460 --> 00:32:42.179
 I'm just wondering how.

00:32:42.879 --> 00:32:43.460
 Because you know.

00:32:43.519 --> 00:32:44.319
 The parables are quick.

00:32:44.379 --> 00:32:44.839
 They're short little.

00:32:45.319 --> 00:32:45.720
 Yeah.

00:32:45.919 --> 00:32:46.240
 So.

00:32:46.419 --> 00:32:46.599
 You know.

00:32:46.599 --> 00:32:48.240
 You don't think of them as being very nuanced.

00:32:48.419 --> 00:32:48.619
 And yet.

00:32:49.079 --> 00:32:50.699
 I see two very different messages.

00:32:51.019 --> 00:32:51.219
 You know.

00:32:51.379 --> 00:32:52.299
 That I think are both there.

00:32:53.059 --> 00:32:53.459
 Yes.

00:32:54.179 --> 00:32:54.579
 So.

00:32:54.979 --> 00:32:55.379
 So.

00:32:55.500 --> 00:32:56.159
 Peter's question was.

00:32:56.239 --> 00:32:57.059
 Is the parable.

00:32:58.139 --> 00:32:59.500
 Is the parable intended to.

00:32:59.759 --> 00:33:01.500
 Help us identify with the man in the road.

00:33:01.759 --> 00:33:03.399
 Or is it also a.

00:33:05.639 --> 00:33:06.519
 A challenge.

00:33:06.619 --> 00:33:07.059
 Or even a.

00:33:07.219 --> 00:33:08.079
 A rebuke.

00:33:08.579 --> 00:33:08.979
 To.

00:33:09.500 --> 00:33:09.979
 The lawyer.

00:33:10.119 --> 00:33:11.739
 As a representative of the people of Israel.

00:33:11.859 --> 00:33:13.179
 Because it's the priest and the Levite.

00:33:13.259 --> 00:33:15.000
 Sort of representing the leadership of Israel.

00:33:15.159 --> 00:33:16.459
 Who neglect the man in the road.

00:33:16.460 --> 00:33:17.980
 So.

00:33:18.140 --> 00:33:18.620
 I do think.

00:33:19.600 --> 00:33:20.819
 The priest and the Levite.

00:33:20.940 --> 00:33:21.680
 I think Jesus is.

00:33:22.000 --> 00:33:22.860
 Probably meaning to.

00:33:23.000 --> 00:33:24.000
 For the lawyer to see.

00:33:24.740 --> 00:33:25.019
 Hmm.

00:33:25.100 --> 00:33:26.980
 I'm sort of like this priest and the Levite.

00:33:27.100 --> 00:33:28.259
 I have all this knowledge.

00:33:28.759 --> 00:33:30.319
 But I probably haven't done.

00:33:31.039 --> 00:33:33.319
 I probably haven't loved my neighbor as myself.

00:33:34.519 --> 00:33:36.779
 Even if I haven't harmed my neighbor.

00:33:37.480 --> 00:33:38.000
 You know.

00:33:38.100 --> 00:33:39.740
 I haven't been malicious toward them.

00:33:40.120 --> 00:33:42.059
 I actually haven't actively loved them.

00:33:42.559 --> 00:33:44.640
 In the way that the Bible's calling to.

00:33:44.660 --> 00:33:44.819
 I mean.

00:33:45.059 --> 00:33:46.120
 Love your neighbor as yourself.

00:33:46.119 --> 00:33:46.559
 Means.

00:33:47.119 --> 00:33:48.099
 Be as eager.

00:33:49.099 --> 00:33:49.459
 And.

00:33:49.839 --> 00:33:51.439
 Use as much time and energy.

00:33:51.699 --> 00:33:51.879
 To.

00:33:52.339 --> 00:33:53.339
 Meet the needs of your neighbor.

00:33:53.459 --> 00:33:54.539
 As you would of your own.

00:33:54.619 --> 00:33:55.219
 So be as.

00:33:55.439 --> 00:33:55.699
 I mean.

00:33:55.779 --> 00:33:56.939
 There's all kinds of implications.

00:33:56.939 --> 00:33:58.119
 From love your neighbor as yourself.

00:33:58.239 --> 00:33:59.199
 Be as excited.

00:33:59.759 --> 00:34:01.039
 For somebody else.

00:34:01.159 --> 00:34:01.859
 When they.

00:34:02.579 --> 00:34:03.759
 Get into grad school.

00:34:04.799 --> 00:34:05.599
 And you're.

00:34:07.039 --> 00:34:07.439
 And.

00:34:07.599 --> 00:34:07.839
 And.

00:34:08.059 --> 00:34:09.339
 The grad school that they want.

00:34:09.679 --> 00:34:10.420
 And you don't.

00:34:11.099 --> 00:34:11.319
 Now.

00:34:11.420 --> 00:34:12.039
 That's hard.

00:34:12.719 --> 00:34:13.000
 Right.

00:34:13.460 --> 00:34:13.719
 Or.

00:34:13.719 --> 00:34:14.219
 Or.

00:34:14.219 --> 00:34:14.439
 Or like.

00:34:14.519 --> 00:34:15.599
 Be as excited for someone else.

00:34:15.659 --> 00:34:17.379
 When something really good happens for them.

00:34:18.619 --> 00:34:19.059
 And.

00:34:20.139 --> 00:34:21.119
 And maybe that's.

00:34:21.119 --> 00:34:22.659
 Something that you really long for yourself.

00:34:22.719 --> 00:34:23.199
 That's hard.

00:34:23.259 --> 00:34:24.239
 It's hard not to grow bitter.

00:34:24.559 --> 00:34:24.839
 Right.

00:34:24.840 --> 00:34:25.760
 And sometimes.

00:34:26.360 --> 00:34:26.920
 It's right.

00:34:27.000 --> 00:34:27.519
 To lament.

00:34:27.720 --> 00:34:28.079
 And say.

00:34:28.340 --> 00:34:29.260
 And call out to God.

00:34:29.440 --> 00:34:29.539
 And.

00:34:29.660 --> 00:34:30.539
 And pour out our.

00:34:30.660 --> 00:34:31.820
 Our weariness.

00:34:32.019 --> 00:34:32.320
 And our.

00:34:32.480 --> 00:34:33.140
 Our struggles.

00:34:33.340 --> 00:34:35.120
 And the hard things we're facing before him.

00:34:35.120 --> 00:34:35.700
 That's right.

00:34:36.300 --> 00:34:37.700
 We don't need to just deny that.

00:34:38.059 --> 00:34:38.180
 But.

00:34:38.600 --> 00:34:39.660
 But Jesus is sort of saying.

00:34:39.720 --> 00:34:40.820
 Rejoice with those who rejoice.

00:34:40.920 --> 00:34:41.880
 And mourn with those who mourn.

00:34:42.280 --> 00:34:42.920
 I think that's.

00:34:43.120 --> 00:34:44.900
 And another application of love your neighbor as yourself.

00:34:44.980 --> 00:34:45.140
 So.

00:34:45.300 --> 00:34:46.700
 It's a really challenging command.

00:34:46.700 --> 00:34:47.900
 When we really take it to heart.

00:34:48.380 --> 00:34:48.740
 And.

00:34:49.059 --> 00:34:49.920
 When we really take it to heart.

00:34:50.019 --> 00:34:51.500
 We see that we don't live up to it.

00:34:51.820 --> 00:34:52.599
 In the way we ought to.

00:34:52.780 --> 00:34:52.900
 So.

00:34:56.340 --> 00:34:56.800
 As to.

00:34:56.980 --> 00:34:59.280
 Is the parable primarily focused on rebuking.

00:34:59.960 --> 00:35:00.240
 Israel.

00:35:00.980 --> 00:35:02.599
 Did you kind of learn something new.

00:35:02.800 --> 00:35:03.720
 When you prepared for this.

00:35:03.780 --> 00:35:05.700
 Or did you realize that these two things were there.

00:35:05.800 --> 00:35:06.660
 Or did you kind of think.

00:35:06.700 --> 00:35:06.800
 Oh.

00:35:06.880 --> 00:35:09.039
 I'm kind of now changing the way that I think about this parable.

00:35:09.180 --> 00:35:09.380
 I think it's.

00:35:09.380 --> 00:35:09.660
 Yeah.

00:35:10.800 --> 00:35:11.700
 That's a good question.

00:35:11.880 --> 00:35:12.059
 I've.

00:35:12.519 --> 00:35:12.880
 It's.

00:35:12.980 --> 00:35:13.320
 This is.

00:35:13.700 --> 00:35:14.019
 So.

00:35:14.139 --> 00:35:14.660
 I would say.

00:35:14.740 --> 00:35:14.820
 So.

00:35:14.880 --> 00:35:15.700
 This is a sermon that I.

00:35:15.800 --> 00:35:16.280
 That has been.

00:35:16.599 --> 00:35:17.700
 A few years in preparation.

00:35:17.900 --> 00:35:18.740
 In the sense that.

00:35:18.840 --> 00:35:19.599
 There's been different times.

00:35:19.599 --> 00:35:20.980
 When I've reflected on this parable.

00:35:21.119 --> 00:35:22.740
 And different things have come out to me.

00:35:23.680 --> 00:35:24.000
 So.

00:35:25.920 --> 00:35:26.240
 So.

00:35:26.480 --> 00:35:26.599
 It's.

00:35:26.740 --> 00:35:28.300
 I think this parable is a really rich parable.

00:35:28.599 --> 00:35:28.960
 Right.

00:35:28.980 --> 00:35:29.380
 In one way.

00:35:29.420 --> 00:35:29.680
 It's just.

00:35:29.780 --> 00:35:31.740
 An amazing picture of what it means to love your neighbor.

00:35:32.119 --> 00:35:32.900
 In another way.

00:35:32.940 --> 00:35:34.680
 It's a picture of what Christ has done for us.

00:35:34.760 --> 00:35:35.519
 In another way.

00:35:35.539 --> 00:35:36.780
 It's a rebuke and a challenge.

00:35:37.340 --> 00:35:39.039
 To those of us who are like the lawyer.

00:35:40.619 --> 00:35:40.980
 And.

00:35:41.380 --> 00:35:42.820
 I think all those things are there.

00:35:43.019 --> 00:35:43.380
 So.

00:35:43.460 --> 00:35:43.740
 I think.

00:35:44.300 --> 00:35:45.200
 I think there's all.

00:35:45.280 --> 00:35:47.539
 All those are legitimate applications of the parable.

00:35:47.900 --> 00:35:48.840
 All right.

00:35:48.900 --> 00:35:49.800
 One last question.

00:35:52.240 --> 00:35:52.639
 Samuel.

00:35:56.740 --> 00:35:57.539
 Who's sincere?

00:36:01.840 --> 00:36:03.019
 You mean the lawyer or Martha?

00:36:05.440 --> 00:36:06.160
 Who's sincere?

00:36:06.240 --> 00:36:06.940
 That's a good question.

00:36:07.639 --> 00:36:08.360
 So Martha.

00:36:08.559 --> 00:36:09.260
 I think is sincere.

00:36:09.440 --> 00:36:11.180
 She just really wants her sister to help her.

00:36:11.380 --> 00:36:11.579
 Right.

00:36:12.579 --> 00:36:14.319
 I don't think Martha's faking anything.

00:36:14.500 --> 00:36:15.559
 I think Martha's just like.

00:36:15.639 --> 00:36:16.460
 I need some help here.

00:36:16.539 --> 00:36:17.239
 Get her to help me.

00:36:17.299 --> 00:36:18.319
 Why is she just sitting here?

00:36:19.480 --> 00:36:20.179
 The lawyer.

00:36:20.579 --> 00:36:22.340
 The lawyer is probably sincere too.

00:36:22.860 --> 00:36:23.219
 Right.

00:36:23.259 --> 00:36:24.360
 He wants eternal life.

00:36:24.739 --> 00:36:26.739
 He sincerely believes that he's.

00:36:27.119 --> 00:36:28.039
 He's pretty good.

00:36:28.099 --> 00:36:29.139
 And he's on the right track.

00:36:29.199 --> 00:36:29.719
 And he wants.

00:36:29.980 --> 00:36:31.840
 Sort of Jesus stamp of approval too.

00:36:31.840 --> 00:36:35.280
 But I think what you can see in these parables.

00:36:35.280 --> 00:36:36.780
 In these interactions.

00:36:36.960 --> 00:36:37.700
 You can be sincere.

00:36:37.780 --> 00:36:39.000
 But you can be sincerely wrong.

00:36:40.300 --> 00:36:42.900
 And Jesus challenges both of them.

00:36:43.220 --> 00:36:44.780
 Not because they're insincere.

00:36:45.500 --> 00:36:46.480
 But because.

00:36:47.640 --> 00:36:48.160
 Their.

00:36:48.440 --> 00:36:49.960
 Their perspective is.

00:36:50.460 --> 00:36:51.579
 Twisted and distorted.

00:36:53.220 --> 00:36:53.660
 And that's.

00:36:54.200 --> 00:36:54.539
 I mean.

00:36:54.980 --> 00:36:55.960
 Isn't that true for all of us?

00:36:56.000 --> 00:36:57.019
 You can be totally sincere.

00:36:57.019 --> 00:36:59.340
 And you can have a.

00:36:59.759 --> 00:37:01.340
 Just a twisted view of things.

00:37:01.800 --> 00:37:03.119
 And what Jesus has come to do.

00:37:03.480 --> 00:37:03.880
 Is.

00:37:04.460 --> 00:37:04.699
 To.

00:37:05.519 --> 00:37:06.259
 Straighten that out.

00:37:08.559 --> 00:37:09.679
 And show us what's real.

00:37:12.000 --> 00:37:12.619
 Let's pray.

00:37:12.800 --> 00:37:14.380
 And then we're going to close with a song.

00:37:15.960 --> 00:37:16.320
 Lord.

00:37:16.440 --> 00:37:16.860
 Thanks for.

00:37:17.400 --> 00:37:18.320
 This time to.

00:37:18.679 --> 00:37:19.920
 Look into these passages tonight.

00:37:20.079 --> 00:37:20.659
 Thank you for.

00:37:21.559 --> 00:37:22.300
 Thank you for the.

00:37:22.420 --> 00:37:23.000
 The wisdom.

00:37:23.500 --> 00:37:24.780
 That you show to us.

00:37:24.900 --> 00:37:26.639
 And how you responded to these two questions.

00:37:26.639 --> 00:37:27.460
 Thank you for the.

00:37:27.839 --> 00:37:29.099
 Challenges that you give us.

00:37:29.639 --> 00:37:31.219
 We pray that we would take to heart.

00:37:33.139 --> 00:37:34.119
 This message Lord.

00:37:34.199 --> 00:37:34.940
 We pray that we would.

00:37:35.339 --> 00:37:36.179
 Receive from you.

00:37:36.599 --> 00:37:37.779
 And abide in you.

00:37:38.420 --> 00:37:39.859
 And we pray that we would.

00:37:41.500 --> 00:37:42.259
 Show mercy.

00:37:42.719 --> 00:37:43.839
 And love our neighbor as ourselves.

00:37:44.559 --> 00:37:45.579
 And in doing that.

00:37:46.159 --> 00:37:46.759
 To realize.

00:37:47.539 --> 00:37:47.859
 More.

00:37:48.179 --> 00:37:48.539
 Deeply.

00:37:49.579 --> 00:37:51.179
 The mercy that you've shown to us.

00:37:52.420 --> 00:37:53.839
 We pray these things in Jesus name.

00:37:54.099 --> 00:37:54.319
 Amen.
