How often have you heard it read or how often have you sung this psalm? 00:00:31.120 --> 00:00:42.000 Perhaps many of you, you know it off by heart. It's a psalm that many of us learned, whether it was in day school or Sunday school, learned all of these words off by heart. 00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:46.219 But it's the most sung psalm in Scripture. 00:00:47.140 --> 00:00:53.140 And it's amazing just how often it's sung in the sense of the kinds of occasions that it's sung at. 00:00:53.200 --> 00:00:59.579 It can be very happy occasions or it can be very sad occasions that these words are sung. 00:01:00.340 --> 00:01:07.280 And that's just a reminder to us that in this psalm there's a whole experience of our lives summed up. 00:01:07.280 --> It trips off our tongues so easily. 00:01:43.359 --> 00:01:48.600 But if we just stop there, you know these words well, but what do the words mean? 00:01:49.240 --> 00:01:50.520 What do they mean to you today? 00:01:51.820 --> 00:01:53.099 What do they say to you? 00:01:53.159 --> 00:01:57.439 Do you know this Lord as your shepherd? 00:01:57.439 --> 00:02:07.659 And as you go on and read this psalm, as we go on and sing this psalm, what do the words go on to say about the care of the shepherd, of the shepherd's leading? 00:02:08.219 --> 00:02:10.520 What does it mean to you? 00:02:11.460 --> 00:02:14.219 You see, there's two problems with familiarity. 00:02:15.460 --> 00:02:17.639 There's two sayings that are often used. 00:02:17.639 --> 00:02:21.299 One is familiarity breeds contempt. 00:02:21.300 --> 00:02:30.360 And that means that when we have a close knowledge of someone or something, it can lead to a lack of respect. 00:02:31.000 --> 00:02:32.780 Familiarity breeds contempt. 00:02:32.780 --> 00:02:36.439 And that can be true of this psalm. 00:02:36.500 --> 00:02:38.439 Perhaps it's been true in your own experience. 00:02:38.520 --> 00:02:44.580 Or perhaps in your own experience, it's true today that this is the way that you think of this psalm. 00:02:44.580 --> 00:02:54.220 And you're familiar with it, but it breeds contempt because it speaks of the Lord as a shepherd and the different experiences that we can go through. 00:02:54.860 --> 00:03:04.560 And because of maybe trials you've gone through or different experiences you've had, you start to complacency is something that can be true with this psalm as well. 00:03:25.020 --> 00:03:32.439 We can just, as we say, hear it or sing it so often, but not really take in what it actually means for Where you see that God is only there when you need him or when you want something from him. 00:05:03.139 --> 00:05:08.420 And these words, when we say, the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want, I 00:05:18.839 So there can be a familiarity with this psalm. 00:05:19.300 --> 00:05:20.839 One way it can breed contempt. 00:05:21.300 --> 00:05:23.519 Another way it can breed complacency. 00:05:24.300 --> 00:05:29.199 But we always want to come back to it and see what this psalm is saying to us. 00:05:29.620 --> 00:05:35.839 Reminding us of how we are to walk with the Lord close to him and know the shepherd's care. 00:05:36.599 --> 00:05:43.899 And the cluster of psalms here, 22, 23, and 24, they speak of the shepherd in different ways. 00:05:43.899 --> 00:05:48.739 22, speaks about the shepherd as he dies for his sheep. 00:05:49.479 --> 00:05:53.500 This 23 speaks as a shepherd as he cares for his sheep. 00:05:53.579 --> 00:05:59.839 And then 24 speaks about the shepherd who's coming for his sheep, that he is going to return. 00:06:00.379 --> 00:06:06.919 So this morning we're just going to think for a short time on the shepherd who cares for his sheep. 00:06:06.920 --> 00:06:12.080 We all go through different experiences in our lives. 00:06:12.079 --> 00:06:22.219 And as a congregation, as a people, we know whether it's ourselves or others who are going through a variety of different trials and experiences just now. 00:06:23.060 --> 00:06:27.319 But we pray that these words will help us to bring us close to God. 00:06:27.959 --> 00:06:32.740 And not just for us to come close, but us to bring others close to God as well. 00:06:32.740 --> 00:06:40.199 It to be a prayer for people to know the Lord as a shepherd in these days for each and every one of us. 00:06:40.879 --> 00:06:44.160 And the first thing we see in this psalm is a declaration. 00:06:45.199 --> 00:06:46.100 A declaration. 00:06:47.120 --> 00:06:51.860 David, the psalmist here, we can be familiar with his life. 00:06:52.720 --> 00:06:59.840 David, who was a shepherd himself, a shepherd boy who was called by God to be a king for his people. 00:06:59.839 --> 00:07:05.060 And so he was familiar with the whole idea of what it meant to be, a shepherd. 00:07:05.919 --> 00:07:10.439 And now he's writing these words, seeing who his shepherd is. 00:07:10.579 --> 00:07:12.879 The Lord is my shepherd. 00:07:13.379 --> 00:07:15.179 I shall not want. 00:07:16.159 --> 00:07:21.679 And just these opening words of David, he doesn't say the Lord is a shepherd. 00:07:22.439 --> 00:07:24.599 He's not a shepherd like me. 00:07:24.779 --> 00:07:28.620 He's saying the Lord is my shepherd. 00:07:28.620 --> 00:07:32.019 He is seeing his own need. 00:07:32.759 --> 00:07:37.780 And he's seeing that it is the Lord who is able to help him in his need. 00:07:38.160 --> 00:07:41.439 The Lord is my shepherd, he says as well. 00:07:41.800 --> 00:07:43.199 So it's ongoing. 00:07:44.459 --> 00:07:49.040 It's in that tense where you see this is David's experience day to day. 00:07:49.120 --> 00:07:51.699 The Lord is my shepherd. 00:07:52.699 --> 00:07:57.319 You could almost say still to this day, the Lord is David's shepherd. 00:07:57.319 --> 00:08:06.800 And for ourselves, it reminds us that God still speaks in this way to us, reminding us of our need for a shepherd. 00:08:06.800 --> 00:08:16.780 As we read in John chapter 10, another great passage that reminds us of Jesus who is the good shepherd there for his people. 00:08:17.740 --> 00:08:19.560 In John 10 verse 4 it says, 00:08:19.560 --> 00:08:35.639 There is that calling of the shepherd and there is that people who are following the voice of the shepherd. 00:08:35.799 --> 00:08:38.259 That's what David is doing here. 00:08:38.480 --> 00:08:41.259 Is that what you're doing in your life today? 00:08:41.259 --> 00:08:46.279 Are you hearing that call of the shepherd to follow him? 00:08:47.080 --> 00:08:49.319 And are you following him? 00:08:50.179 --> 00:08:53.299 You see, this is a declaration of trust. 00:08:54.439 --> 00:08:56.360 From the very outset, David is saying, 00:08:56.500 --> 00:08:58.379 The Lord is my shepherd. 00:08:58.500 --> 00:08:59.939 There is a trust there. 00:08:59.940 --> 00:09:10.880 And as he looks at the Lord as his shepherd, he realizes then that he will not want, he will not lack, as he knows the Lord as his shepherd. 00:09:12.300 --> 00:09:14.840 Do you ever say to the Lord as you pray, 00:09:15.020 --> 00:09:16.480 Lord, I want. 00:09:17.140 --> 00:09:20.000 Not in the sense 00:10:16.919 There's this sense of, this scene is something beautiful, something plentiful, and something that's easy to find. 00:10:17.019 --> 00:10:20.039 The shepherd just leads from one green pasture to another. 00:10:20.039 --> 00:10:22.299 But that was not the case. 00:10:22.500 --> 00:10:27.179 It wasn't the case for David as a shepherd or any shepherd in these days. 00:10:27.919 --> 00:10:31.059 It was hard to find these green pastures. 00:10:31.159 --> 00:10:36.519 It was hard to find these places with the waters to quench the thirst. 00:10:37.539 --> 00:10:41.679 We have maybe the opposite problem here in Scotland and our own island. 00:10:41.819 --> 00:10:44.259 The struggle is to find dry ground. 00:10:44.259 --> 00:10:53.799 The struggle here was to find a place that wasn't dry, that wasn't hard, but that was well watered, that had lush grass. 00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:57.960 And so the shepherd very often would have to lead great distances. 00:10:58.860 --> 00:11:07.539 Moving through barren ground, hot areas, difficult terrain, all of these things with wild animals all around. 00:11:07.539 --> 00:11:11.579 And so the green pastures were hard to find. 00:11:12.279 --> 00:11:15.839 But the good shepherd led them to these places. 00:11:16.779 --> 00:11:23.839 Again, as a reminder to us that there are these dry experiences, these difficult experiences in our own life. 00:11:23.919 --> 00:11:25.120 Times of barrenness. 00:11:25.599 --> 00:11:32.519 But as we're looking to the shepherd, to the good shepherd, he is able to bring us to these places of refreshing as well. 00:11:32.519 --> 00:11:39.139 And so do you know this shepherd today as he leads you through all of these experiences in life? 00:11:39.639 --> 00:11:45.699 The question that this raises from David in this psalm is, how do we know this shepherd? 00:11:46.100 --> 00:11:49.139 How can you know this shepherd today? 00:11:50.259 --> 00:11:57.539 Well, again, we go back to John chapter 10 to a verse we didn't read, but it says in verse 27 of chapter 10, 00:11:57.539 --> 00:12:02.980 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 00:12:04.459 --> 00:12:12.259 And so this declaration that David makes, the Lord is my shepherd, it leads to that question for us, 00:12:12.579 --> 00:12:16.719 how can I know the Lord as my shepherd? 00:12:17.679 --> 00:12:20.939 Well, it's what Jesus says in John 10, 27. 00:12:20.940 --> 00:12:27.260 My sheep hear my voice, and my sheep follow me. 00:12:28.800 --> 00:12:35.940 And so the two questions that arise from that are, are you listening to him, and are you following him? 00:12:36.880 --> 00:12:42.940 If you want the Lord as your shepherd, it's to listen and to follow. 00:12:43.760 --> 00:12:47.320 That's the declaration that David makes here. 00:12:47.320 --> 00:12:51.860 He is listening, and he is following the Lord. 00:12:52.740 --> 00:12:57.960 Are you today, in that sense, listening and following him? 00:12:59.200 --> 00:13:03.600 So we have the good shepherd and the declaration that David makes, 00:13:03.680 --> 00:13:08.920 but we also then have a sense of restoration as we turn to verse 3. 00:13:36.299 So these two verses, they remind us of the restoration that the good shepherd gives. 00:13:36.299 --> 00:13:41.679 And the first thing is, he says there, he restores my soul. 00:13:42.639 --> 00:13:45.339 The shepherd gives life. 00:13:47.339 --> 00:13:54.219 A shepherd, in the ordinary sense of an ordinary shepherd, he couldn't give life, 00:13:54.819 --> 00:13:58.240 but he sought to provide care that kept life. 00:13:58.240 --> 00:14:05.860 But Jesus is the one who gives life, because he's no ordinary shepherd. 00:14:06.899 --> 00:14:10.740 He is the Son of God who came into this world. 00:14:12.639 --> 00:14:18.440 And so, as we look to Jesus, we see one who finds his sheep. 00:14:19.299 --> 00:14:24.480 And it's where he finds his sheep, as described by Paul in Ephesians 2, verse 1, 00:14:24.480 --> 00:14:27.340 who are dead in their trespasses and sins. 00:14:28.159 --> 00:14:30.360 That's the way we are as a sheep. 00:14:30.440 --> 00:14:32.840 We are a sheep who have gone astray. 00:14:33.980 --> 00:14:36.360 And yet he is able to restore. 00:14:37.200 --> 00:14:40.120 He is able to restore our soul. 00:14:40.259 --> 00:14:42.039 He is able to give life. 00:14:42.259 --> 00:14:45.180 The word restore means to bring back. 00:14:45.179 --> 00:14:49.399 And that's what the Lord Jesus does for his people. 00:14:49.519 --> 00:14:52.439 He brings back that life that was dead in sin. 00:14:53.120 --> 00:14:56.679 And a life that then we are able to live for him. 00:14:57.659 --> 00:15:01.939 But when you look at these words, it's not just applying to us. 00:15:02.659 --> 00:15:06.739 But we see them first and foremost applying to the Lord Jesus himself. 00:15:06.740 --> 00:15:12.879 Because, as you read and as we sing often in verse Psalm 16 as well, 00:15:13.580 --> 00:15:16.980 the soul is not left to decay, it says. 00:15:17.080 --> 00:15:18.659 And that's speaking of the Lord Jesus. 00:15:20.120 --> 00:15:24.720 And here we are reminded that Jesus was one who gave his life, 00:15:25.360 --> 00:15:27.340 but who took his life up again. 00:15:28.480 --> 00:15:32.259 It's a great reminder to us as we approach the time of Easter 00:15:32.259 Through the valley of the shadow of death as he went to the cross, 00:15:45.199 --> 00:15:47.279 as he died there for our sins. 00:15:48.399 --> 00:15:53.559 There's a reminder here that the good shepherd has experienced all of this himself. 00:15:54.840 --> 00:15:59.659 And so the life that he is able to give is a life that he has given for us, 00:15:59.659 --> 00:16:02.139 that we might have path, 00:18:19.059 --> 00:18:20.299 although it may be difficult, 00:18:20.500 --> 00:18:21.599 although it may be hard, 00:18:22.099 --> 00:18:24.819 it's the one that leads to everlasting life.
