00:01:52.400 --> 00:01:57.000 Honor the Lord with your wealth and with your first fruits of all your produce. 00:01:57.719 --> 00:02:01.500 But what you want us to notice is that first phrase, honor requirement. 00:04:59.500 --> 00:05:03.019 The first time we see tithing mentioned in the Old Testament, 00:05:03.319 --> 00:05:04.139 in the book of Genesis, 00:05:04.720 --> 00:05:07.500 it was given as a voluntary, spontaneous expression 00:05:08.120 --> 00:05:11.920 of worship or gratitude or commitment. 00:05:13.060 --> 00:05:17.360 Abraham, who was first known in the Old Testament as Abram, 00:05:18.360 --> 00:05:20.560 God's the one who changed His name to Abraham. 00:05:21.500 --> 00:05:25.240 On one occasion, He gave a tithe of all He had won in a battle. 00:05:25.240 --> 00:05:29.019 He gave a tithe of the spoils of war 00:05:29.019 --> 00:05:33.139 to a mysterious figure in the Bible, 00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:38.139 Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of God, he's described. 00:05:38.960 --> 00:05:41.900 It says in Genesis 14, verse 20, just simply, 00:05:42.340 --> 00:05:46.040 and Abram gave him a tenth of everything. 00:05:46.800 --> 00:05:49.060 But I want you to look next at the book of Hebrews. 00:05:49.060 --> 00:05:52.920 It affirms that this was an act of worship. 00:05:53.300 --> 00:05:56.199 Note, this Melchizedek was king of Salem 00:05:56.199 --> 00:05:58.040 and priest of God Most High. 00:05:58.459 --> 00:06:01.980 He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings 00:06:01.980 --> 00:06:03.500 and blessed him, 00:06:04.300 --> 00:06:07.480 and Abraham gave him a tenth of everything. 00:06:08.879 --> 00:06:10.319 In response to that, 00:06:10.680 --> 00:06:15.420 God is an expression of worship given to the priest of God. Testament does teach 00:09:02.639 --> 00:09:04.559 that Christians should give, 00:09:05.500 --> 00:09:07.559 but it doesn't say how much. 00:09:08.039 --> 00:09:09.359 It doesn't talk about a percentage. 00:09:11.059 --> 00:09:12.279 Most of what you read 00:09:12.279 --> 00:09:13.439 in the New Testament about giving 00:09:13.439 --> 00:09:14.559 is focused on principles. 00:09:15.559 --> 00:09:18.139 Or what we might even say, 00:09:18.519 --> 00:09:20.259 our attitude in giving. 00:09:20.859 --> 00:09:22.219 I want you to look at some examples. 00:09:23.879 --> 00:09:24.639 The New
