angle a bit different from the other Gospel writers. 00:00:23.620 --> 00:00:28.199 Over the last few weeks, we've been looking at John's unique perspective on Christmas, 00:00:28.199 --> 00:00:32.820 on the incarnation, God becoming man. 00:00:33.799 --> 00:00:36.500 And I want us to see one more thing in it tonight. 00:00:36.759 --> 00:00:41.079 Let's read the whole passage, but focus primarily on the verses at the end. 00:00:41.340 --> 00:00:44.200 This is John chapter 1 at verse 1. 00:00:44.599 --> 00:00:50.239 God's perfect Word given to us that we might know Him and love Him. 00:00:51.859 --> 00:00:56.379 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 00:00:56.380 --> 00:00:58.640 He was in the beginning with God. 00:00:59.520 --> 00:01:04.280 All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made. 00:01:04.980 --> 00:01:08.100 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 00:01:08.659 --> 00:01:12.000 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 00:01:13.159 --> 00:01:16.120 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 00:01:16.939 --> 00:01:21.939 He came as a witness to bear witness about the light that all might believe through Him. 00:01:21.939 --> 00:01:27.120 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. 00:01:27.319 --> 00:01:30.879 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 00:01:31.359 --> 00:01:36.200 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, yet the world did not know 00:02:17.079 And from His fullness we have all received grace upon grace. 00:02:17.639 --> 00:02:22.300 For the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 00:02:23.560 --> May God add His blessing to the reading of His holy Word. 00:02:37.180 --> 00:02:37.439 Amen. 00:02:39.299 --> 00:02:44.819 If you've been in a church long enough, you've probably heard someone say, 00:02:45.259 --> 00:02:49.199 Be careful, you might be the only Jesus they'll ever see. 00:02:50.900 --> 00:02:57.319 And often that's intended as a reminder that we are to reflect Jesus to those who don't know Him, 00:02:57.919 --> 00:03:00.959 which is okay as far as that goes. 00:03:00.960 --> 00:03:08.980 But it's always bothered me a bit, because if I'm the only Jesus that you ever know, you're in big trouble. 00:03:09.960 --> 00:03:13.420 There's a big difference between Him and me. 00:03:14.180 --> 00:03:16.820 Please don't say amen as loudly as they did the first time. 00:03:16.819 --> 00:03:26.759 And one of the reasons it's important for all of us to know that and realize that is it's not our job ultimately to be Jesus. 00:03:27.799 --> 00:03:28.719 He is unique. 00:03:29.560 --> 00:03:34.979 In fact, you'll notice that when this other guy named John, it's John the Baptist, is talked about here, 00:03:35.240 --> 00:03:38.859 it's clearly pointed out that He is not the light. 00:03:38.860 --> 00:03:46.380 A few verses later, beyond what we read, the first words we hear John the Baptist say are, 00:03:46.720 --> 00:03:48.500 I am not the Christ. 00:03:49.540 --> 00:03:56.060 In other words, I can't be the only prophet, the only teacher, the only Savior that you know. 00:03:56.360 --> 00:04:00.800 There's another one that I'm here to tell you about and point you to. 00:04:00.800 --> 00:04:08.719 Now we have seen in the past few weeks how God's Word calls those of us who are not the light 00:04:08.719 --> 00:04:12.280 to testify to the true light, as John did. 00:04:12.980 --> 00:04:18.540 To bring the light of Jesus into the darkness of our hearts and the darkness of our world. 00:04:19.319 --> 00:04:24.000 We've seen how we are to sacrifice our own comforts for the sake of others 00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:33.079 in order to run toward their pain and sacrifice for them to enter into their suffering as Jesus did for us. 00:04:33.959 --> 00:04:38.660 We've seen we're to share God's heart of love toward everyone around us. 00:04:39.720 --> 00:04:43.220 But we don't do those things perfectly, do we? 00:04:43.939 --> 00:04:50.579 And so we often give an incomplete and broken picture of what God is really like. 00:04:50.579 --> 00:04:57.839 So if you're here tonight and your biggest problem with Jesus is an image that you have of Him 00:04:57.839 --> 00:05:04.139 from those who claim to follow Him, let me encourage you never to stop there. 00:05:04.879 --> 00:05:12.439 You will never get the truly glorious picture of who God is just from us. 00:05:12.919 --> 00:05:16.899 You actually need to see Jesus Himself. 00:05:17.639 --> 00:05:20.419 See, that's what this passage is telling us. 00:05:20.579 --> 00:05:28.939 That Jesus uniquely, perfectly, and gloriously reveals who God is and what God is like. 00:05:30.139 --> 00:05:37.079 The incarnation, His coming into this world is the intentional entrance of the divine Son of God 00:05:37.079 --> 00:05:39.839 into our fallen world in human flesh. 00:05:40.219 --> 00:05:47.579 To secure our redemption at the cost of His life because of His great love. 00:05:47.579 --> 00:05:54.959 It's the unique, unrepeatable event in which Jesus comes to reveal what God is really like. 00:05:55.939 --> 00:06:03.379 The Word becomes flesh so we can know God and experience Him before that you'd heard about and you thought you really wanted it, 00:06:23.699 --> 00:06:28.639 but you didn't really know exactly what it was going to be like until you opened it and had it for yourself? 00:06:29.619 --> 00:06:33.439 When I was four years old, I really wanted a dog. 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:35.659 I had heard about dogs. 00:06:35.660 --> 00:06:41.240 I had seen dogs from behind fences and behind glass and that sort of thing. 00:06:41.400 --> 00:06:45.880 And it seemed like a great thing, but I'd never had a dog before. 00:06:46.140 --> 00:06:47.700 And that's actually very different. 00:06:48.960 --> 00:06:54.580 And sure enough, Christmas morning, I came downstairs and there was this package under the tree that kept moving. 00:06:55.400 --> 00:06:59.020 And I raced over to it as soon as I noticed and tore it open. 00:06:59.019 --> 00:07:04.680 And sure enough, there it was, my very own real live puppy just for me. 00:07:05.279 --> 00:07:14.000 And I got to hold it and touch it and play with it and train it and clean up after it. 00:07:14.419 --> 00:07:18.779 And all those other things that happen when you actually have a dog. 00:07:18.779 --> 00:07:29.279 See, I'd heard about dogs, but I actually needed to experience it for myself to know really what it was like to have a dog. 00:07:30.479 --> 00:07:38.419 Maybe you'll have that experience tomorrow when you unwrap a toy or a game or a trip somewhere you've heard about before, 00:07:38.500 --> 00:07:40.399 but never been yourself. 00:07:40.559 --> 00:07:42.439 And you'll get to go experience it firsthand. 00:07:43.599 --> 00:07:46.359 I hope it's even better than you're imagining it's going to be. 00:07:46.360 --> 00:07:51.139 But see, that's what happened the first Christmas. 00:07:52.319 --> 00:07:55.319 God unwrapped himself. 00:07:56.420 --> 00:08:02.340 The word became flesh so that we could know what God is really like, 00:08:02.800 --> 00:08:07.540 could see him and touch him and experience him for ourselves. 00:08:08.420 --> 00:08:14.720 And that's a huge deal because, as John reminds us, no one has ever seen God. 00:08:14.720 --> 00:08:18.960 All through the Old Testament, that was an impossibility. 00:08:19.500 --> 00:08:23.920 No one could behold the glory of God and live to tell about it. 00:08:25.140 --> 00:08:27.640 I mean, people had heard lots of things about God. 00:08:28.660 --> 00:08:30.540 They'd heard what he was like. 00:08:30.640 --> 00:08:32.800 They'd seen some things that he had done. 00:08:33.000 --> 00:08:36.240 But no one had seen God. 00:08:36.240 --> 00:08:46.680 Until, verse 18, the only God, the Son who is at the Father's side, made him known. 00:08:47.200 --> 00:08:53.000 The Word became flesh and dwelt among us and we saw his glory. 00:08:54.000 --> 00:09:02.419 In that manger in Bethlehem about 2,000 years ago, God unwrapped himself because he wants us to know him. 00:09:02.419 --> 00:09:13.240 This passage is telling us that God is demonstrated most clearly and most fully in the Word become flesh. 00:09:13.860 --> 00:09:16.979 Jesus is the perfect image of God. 00:09:17.360 --> 00:09:21.019 The exact representation of his being. 00:09:21.539 --> 00:09:24.860 He's the radiance of the glory of God. 00:09:25.199 --> 00:09:26.759 So we're not missing out on anything. 00:09:27.659 --> 00:09:30.059 We're not getting the backup version. 00:09:30.059 --> 00:09:33.479 We're not stuck with a scratch or dent model. 00:09:34.419 --> 00:09:38.139 Jesus shows us God in human flesh. 00:09:39.579 --> 00:09:44.639 We make lots of assumptions about God and what he's like, don't we? 00:09:45.779 --> 00:09:51.159 We experience things in life and conclude this is what must be true about God. 00:09:51.419 --> 00:09:52.559 This is what he's like. 00:09:53.199 --> 00:09:57.199 For instance, many conclude that God doesn't exist at all. 00:09:57.200 --> 00:10:05.879 They experience life in this crazy world and say it just doesn't make sense to them that God would exist. 00:10:07.080 --> 00:10:10.920 Many assume God exists in a very distant place. 00:10:11.780 --> 00:10:16.080 Disconnected from them in anything to do with their daily lives. 00:10:16.080 --> 00:10:30.340 Others perceive God as a demanding tyrant who is controlling of everything they do and who is either very angry or deeply disappointed whenever they fail. 00:10:31.620 --> 00:10:33.540 Whenever they don't measure up to his standard. 00:10:33.539 --> 00:10:42.919 Many of us walk through dark, difficult seasons of life and begin to assume that God doesn't care about us. 00:10:43.379 --> 00:10:45.659 Or at least not consistently. 00:10:46.459 --> 00:10:48.579 He seems to be hiding from me. 00:10:48.699 --> 00:10:50.500 Not revealing himself. 00:10:50.799 --> 00:10:53.319 I bet he doesn't care if I know him at all. 00:10:54.799 --> 00:10:56.919 Have you ever felt any of those things before? 00:10:57.860 --> 00:10:59.039 I have. 00:10:59.039 --> 00:11:06.879 If you've ever drawn any of those conclusions about God, God says to us at Christmas, 00:11:07.299 --> 00:11:10.240 I want you to know what I'm really like. 00:11:10.500 --> 00:11:14.740 Because I want you to know me personally, experientially. 00:11:15.399 --> 00:11:17.219 Not just something you've heard on a commercial. 00:11:17.779 --> 00:11:19.439 This is the way I'm supposed to be. 00:11:19.559 --> 00:11:20.379 Someone says. 00:11:20.379 --> 00:11:29.019 There's a phrase used repeatedly here to describe that glory of God that Jesus reveals to us. 00:11:29.259 --> 00:11:33.480 It's that he's full of grace and truth. 00:11:34.439 --> 00:11:42.120 That's what God's like when you unwrap the present, so to speak, and start to experience him yourself. 00:11:42.120 --> 00:11:52.919 That phrase, full of grace and truth, is a New Testament version of an Old Testament description God used for himself over and over. 00:11:53.539 --> 00:11:58.840 It's often translated, abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness. 00:11:59.700 --> 00:12:03.580 God tells Moses in Exodus 33 that this is his glory. 00:12:03.580 --> 00:12:09.540 It's his goodness expressed unfailingly to people who fail. 00:12:10.300 --> 00:12:13.220 Steadfast love and faithfulness. 00:12:14.360 --> 00:12:19.080 When we read that God is full of grace and truth, that's what he's saying. 00:12:19.840 --> 00:12:25.080 That he is unfailingly good to people who fail to be good. 00:12:25.700 --> 00:12:27.560 No one else is like that. 00:12:28.460 has shown us in the flesh come to be full of grace and truth. 00:12:51.039 --> 00:12:58.259 There are historians who believe in Jesus as God, as well as many who don't believe him to be God, 00:12:58.259 --> 00:13:01.639 who will testify to a baby named Jesus. 00:13:01.639 --> 00:13:09.360 Born about 2,000 years ago in the Middle East, who walked and talked and became a man, 00:13:09.639 --> 00:13:13.740 who did many wonderful things, attested by many eyewitnesses, 00:13:13.819 --> 00:13:17.120 and eventually was killed on a cross. 00:13:17.919 --> 00:13:22.919 And purported to have come back to life and been seen by many after that. 00:13:22.919 --> 00:13:27.399 And so we've walked through the incarnation, 00:13:27.879 --> 00:13:34.740 how God has demonstrated this faithful grace in time and space right here, 00:13:35.259 --> 00:13:37.799 up close and personal for us. 00:13:38.019 --> 00:13:42.899 When the word becomes flesh, God breaks into the darkness of this world with light. 00:13:42.899 --> 00:13:47.759 He shows us that he refuses to leave us alone in our pain, 00:13:47.919 --> 00:13:50.199 but rather runs toward our suffering, 00:13:50.480 --> 00:13:54.059 because he values us more than his own comfort. 00:13:55.360 --> 00:13:58.120 He even bears our sins on the cross. 00:13:58.659 --> 00:14:04.379 And in so doing, he shows us that even the one thing that should have been able to keep a holy God 00:14:04.379 --> 00:14:08.379 distant from us can never separate us from him. 00:14:08.379 --> 00:14:15.279 And the reason that our sin can't keep us from --> 00:15:23.419 God, if I could only see you myself, 00:15:23.879 --> 00:15:26.379 if I could only hear your voice, 00:15:26.779 --> 00:15:29.259 then I could know that you are really like this. 00:15:29.259 --> 00:15:33.179 Listen, what you need to see in that moment is Jesus. 00:15:33.620 --> 00:15:35.080 To remember Jesus. 00:15:35.539 --> 00:15:40.500 He's the one in whom God has shown us this bread and drink the cup, 00:18:06.759 --> 00:18:10.259 you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. 00:18:11.919 --> 00:18:15.079 Friends, we're so glad that you're here with us tonight.
