Before we go into today's message, I want to give you a little context. 00:00:19.820 --> 00:00:24.900 We started Advent exploring the hope that is found in Revelation 21, 00:00:24.899 --> 00:00:32.939 and then last week we looked at peace flowing like a river from God's throne in Revelation 22. 00:00:32.939 --> 00:00:37.820 Today, we're moving into the Advent theme of joy. 00:00:37.820 --> 00:00:44.359 And here's what I love about the verse that I chose for today. It's from Isaiah 35. 00:00:44.359 --> 00:00:50.460 It's a wilderness passage. Joy doesn't come because everything is easy. 00:00:50.460 --> 00:00:58.460 Joy breaks through the wilderness. That barren, difficult seasons, the waiting seasons of life. 00:00:58.460 --> 00:01:05.780 Isaiah prophesies that the wilderness will rejoice and blossom, that the blind will see, 00:01:05.780 --> 00:01:13.560 the deaf will hear, the lame will leap like a deer, and everlasting joy will be upon their hands. 00:01:13.560 --> 00:01:20.740 This isn't just ancient poetry. It is a promise that Jesus himself fulfills. 00:01:21.400 --> 00:01:27.859 What I want you to listen for today is this, that joy comes when we see God's promises fulfilled. 00:01:28.540 --> 00:01:33.800 Joy requires patient endurance. reflect on our relationship with the Lord, to reflect on the coming of Christ. 00:02:45.360 --> 00:02:53.760 And it's just a wonderful time for us to look back and to reflect, to just take some time. enjoyed the fog this morning, right? 00:03:09.579 --> 00:03:12.280 A change of temperature, things slow down. 00:03:12.400 --> 00:03:13.879 It's getting darker earlier. 00:03:14.219 --> 00:03:18.299 And for a lot of us, we're probably sleeping in or we're going to bed earlier. 00:03:18.379 --> 00:03:19.379 Let's be honest here. 00:03:20.280 --> 00:03:24.019 And we think about this Advent theme, this theme of joy. 00:03:24.020 --> 00:03:30.860 It's important for us to know that when we think of this idea and this notion of joy, 00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:39.840 what joy comes to our minds and to our hearts, knowing that God's promises are fulfilled, 00:03:40.500 --> 00:03:44.580 that God is constant, that he is everlasting to everlasting. 00:03:45.360 --> 00:03:50.980 And this idea in Advent is this sense of waiting and anticipation. 00:03:50.979 --> 00:04:01.280 How many of you have a dog or an animal and how excited they are the moment you come home? 00:04:02.959 --> 00:04:10.759 And sometimes you have a bad day and you come home and that animal, that creature, whatever, 00:04:11.280 --> 00:04:13.439 is so excited to see you. 00:04:14.219 --> 00:04:18.719 And it's like, it kind of makes you not want to have a bad day anymore. 00:04:18.720 --> 00:04:23.580 You know, when I was growing up, I had lots of, I had horses and dogs and cats, 00:04:23.700 --> 00:04:29.040 and it was always exciting to come home and have the, be greeted by animals. 00:04:29.420 --> 00:04:34.640 Much like we can even think of our own children, how excited they are to see us when we get home 00:04:34.640 --> 00:04:35.880 from a long day at work. 00:04:36.640 --> 00:04:41.640 And I want you to think of that as a little piece of this idea of joy. 00:04:41.639 --> 00:04:47.979 From the perspective of an animal or perspective of a child who's waiting for their parent to come home, 00:04:48.620 --> 00:04:55.120 they are, have this sense of knowing that mom or dad or whoever is coming home. 00:04:55.599 --> 00:05:00.659 Or the animal is waiting for their owner to come home. 00:05:00.919 --> 00:05:02.539 And they're excited in that. 00:05:02.540 --> 00:05:08.800 And when we think of this idea of joy and this sense of anticipation and the sense of waiting, 00:05:09.520 --> 00:05:14.340 that is the same kind of joy that we should have as we are waiting, 00:05:14.439 --> 00:05:20.540 not only for the first coming of Christ, but also for the second coming of Christ. 00:05:20.840 --> 00:05:24.840 And it's almost as though we are living this life in anticipation, 00:05:25.540 --> 00:05:27.800 waiting for better days to come. 00:05:27.800 --> 00:05:29.699 We think about it. 00:05:29.780 --> 00:05:35.139 We think about the world in which we live in and how there's so much darkness, death and destruction, 00:05:35.139 --> 00:05:37.620 but yet there is light. 00:05:38.439 --> 00:05:41.040 There is the love of Christ, the hope that is in him, 00:05:41.100 --> 00:05:43.580 the peace that surpasses all understanding. 00:05:43.580 --> 00:05:48.800 And in moments of waiting, there is joy that comes from him. 00:05:49.300 --> 00:05:52.000 You think about it all throughout scripture. 00:05:52.600 --> 00:05:57.680 There is the imagery of a bride waiting for the groom. 00:05:58.199 --> 00:06:01.960 Or the servant waiting for the master, which is a little harder for us to understand, 00:06:02.060 --> 00:06:03.860 but there's still that sense of anticipation. 00:06:04.900 --> 00:06:09.800 We can think of that, like I mentioned, this idea of children let us recognize that Jesus is the one that we have been waiting for. 00:06:32.020 --> 00:06:35.360 And joy isn't necessarily pretending. 00:06:35.860 --> 00:06:37.780 It is anticipation. 00:06:37.780 00:09:35.220 --> 00:09:39.000 You turn on the TV and you can click on Netflix. 00:09:39.240 --> 00:09:41.759 And just like that, something will pop up. 00:09:42.220 --> 00:09:45.200 Or for some of us who order on Amazon. 00:09:45.360 --> 00:09:47.320 Nothing against ordering on Amazon, mind you. 00:09:47.420 --> 00:09:49.420 But there is two-day delivery. 00:09:49.680 --> 00:09:52.060 And sometimes within the hour or whatever it is. 00:09:52.080 --> 00:09:54.920 Depending upon your location, where you're at. 00:09:54.919 --> 00:10:00.319 And we live in this constant culture where, 00:10:15.719 But when it comes to God, it is on his timing. 00:10:15.919 --> 00:10:17.659 And not on our timing. 00:10:17.979 --> 00:10:20.679 And oh, how much we wish it would be on our timing. God comes. 00:13:36.919 --> 00:13:40.000 And this not only speaks of the first coming of Christ. 00:13:40.000 --> 00:13:41.879 But also the second coming of Christ. 00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:43.159 We think of miracles. 00:13:43.319 --> 00:13:44.360 We think of restoration. 00:13:44.839 --> 00:13:48.120 We think of forgiveness as well as redemption. 00:13:48.879 --> 00:13:51.839 So it's kind of a --> 00:14:44.620 And this is connected not only in the season of Advent. 00:14:44.620 --> 00:14:49.880 But also throughout scripture where we find things like in Psalm 147. 00:14:49.880 --> 00:14:55.240 Where the Lord lifts the oppressed and feeds the hungry and loves the righteous. 00:14:55.660 --> 00:14:59.000 That God takes care of his own. 00:14:59.000 --> 00:15:06.019 And we also think of how James calls for believers to be patient like farmers. 00:15:06.220 --> 00:15:07.919 Who are waiting for their crops. 00:15:08.759 --> 00:15:11.360 Now, you know, I'm not necessarily a farmer. 00:15:11.899 --> 00:15:15.639 But I know when I've ever had a plant and I want it to bloom. 00:15:15.799 --> 00:15:17.580 I'm waiting for it to blossom. 00:15:17.580 --> 00:15:17.700 Awesome. 00:15:18.520 --> 00:15:23.160 I had a, I was gifted a few years back a money tree. 00:15:23.759 --> 00:15:26.060 And I kept watering it and watering it. 00:15:26.560 --> 00:15:29.139 And for the 00:15:33.379 You think of that sense of anticipation. 00:15:33.600 --> 00:15:34.759 Waiting for it to grow. 00:15:35.100 --> 00:15:37.759 And that imagery from James I think is remarkable.
