showing us here in this passage that we read. 00:05:25.800 --> 00:05:31.680 And I know it's been a little bit since we've been together, but in the first 14, 13 verses of this chapter, 00:05:32.060 --> 00:05:34.139 Jesus was teaching his disciples how to pray. 00:05:34.680 --> 00:05:35.879 They saw him praying. 00:05:35.960 --> 00:05:40.319 They saw that every time he did something, it was always fueled by prayer. 00:05:40.879 --> 00:05:42.900 They were running around trying to figure everything out. 00:05:43.019 --> 00:05:44.759 And they looked over there and Jesus is praying. 00:05:45.060 --> 00:05:46.199 He's praying before he does this. 00:05:46.240 --> 00:05:47.019 He's praying before he does that. 00:05:47.340 --> 00:05:49.639 Prayer was the fuel that Jesus needed. 00:05:50.100 --> 00:05:52.600 Prayer was the thing that keeps us connected to the Father. 00:05:52.600 --> 00:05:55.840 And they realized, I need that in my life. 00:05:56.200 --> 00:05:57.879 And they told Jesus, teach us to pray. 00:05:58.500 --> 00:06:00.140 So Jesus laid out this prayer. 00:06:00.340 --> 00:06:02.560 And it's not something we are to quote word for word. 00:06:02.600 --> on our Heavenly Father. 00:06:09.379 --> 00:06:14.920 And He reminds us and He gives us some illustrations there in those opening verses of how to persist in prayer. 00:06:15.860 --> 00:06:19.939 Jesus reminds us, we don't just pray one time and say, well, if He doesn't answer, I'm just going to move on. 00:06:19.939 --> 00:06:25.600 No, He says, we've got to keep coming to the Father and keep being in that dependence upon Him. 00:06:26.560 --> 00:06:27.759 And how we trust Him. 00:06:28.600 --> 00:06:33.019 So now Luke introduces a new section of Scripture here. 00:06:33.180 --> 00:06:36.420 And he's showing us and reminding us why prayer matters. 00:06:37.120 --> 00:06:41.560 Because the one that we are praying to has absolute authority over everything. 00:06:42.279 --> abrupt that in verse number 14, He kind of just nonchalantly says, yeah, and He was casting out a devil. 00:06:56.100 --> 00:06:58.360 Because to us, that seems impossible. 00:06:59.140 --> 00:07:04.000 And sometimes we have a hard time wrapping our 2026 brain around these kind of events. 00:07:04.240 --> 00:07:05.720 But to Jesus, this was nothing. 00:07:06.520 --> 00:07:07.740 He has all authority. 00:07:07.800 --> 00:07:08.660 He has all power. 00:07:08.900 --> 00:07:13.260 He tells the disciples before He ascends into heaven, all power is given unto me in heaven and earth. read, and really it's just one little verse and kind of the rest of this text is based off of it. 00:07:28.839 --> 00:07:30.300 But it wasn't done in a vacuum. 00:07:31.599 --> 00:07:36.279 It seems like Jesus is just kind of sitting there doing this like it's no big deal. 00:07:36.279 --> 00:07:39.379 And it happens visibly for the masses to see. 00:07:41.019 --> 00:07:51.039 And because of the way that it happened and because of the environment that it happened in, it forces everybody that sees this to really decide what they believe about Jesus. 00:07:51.979 --> 00:07:54.799 Because they this man that was possessed by a devil and because of that he was unable to speak. 00:08:05.600 --> 00:08:07.080 That's what it means when it said it was dumb. 00:08:07.720 --> 00:08:10.980 He had no ability to speak, no ability to do those type of things. 00:08:11.100 --> 00:08:15.360 And yet Jesus shows up, says something to him, and the man starts talking. 00:08:16.180 --> 00:08:18.140 And everybody's looking around like, did you see that? 00:08:18.800 --> 00:08:20.300 What just happened there? 00:08:20.300 --> 00:08:25.199 And instead of the crowd agreeing and saying, well, look what little bit more evidence. 00:08:55.419 --> 00:08:56.879 We need a little bit more signs. 00:08:56.959 --> 00:09:02.139 If he would just write it in the sky and say, this is a miracle from God, then I'd believe. 00:09:02.919 --> 00:09:04.079 That's kind of what they're saying here. 00:09:05.319 --> 00:09:06.759 Others just stand there. 00:09:07.100 --> 00:09:08.459 They're not sure where they stand. 00:09:08.799 --> 00:09:11.839 They're amazed, but they're not really committed to it. 00:09:11.840 --> 00:09:18.820 Because when Jesus shows his power, whether it's in first century Israel or respond? 00:09:26.320 --> 00:09:28.879 How do we make it real in our own lives? 00:09:29.740 --> 00:09:34.420 And the way that Luke introduces this, he wants us to understand something from the outset. 00:09:35.440 --> 00:09:38.180 And you look throughout scripture, you look throughout all the gospels, 00:09:38.179 --> 00:09:42.279 Jesus never does a miracle to impress people. 00:09:43.159 --> 00:09:45.839 Jesus is not doing a miracle to draw crowds. 00:09:46.379 --> 00:09:47.779 That is never his goal. 00:09:48.139 --> 00:09:49.939 Now, when miracles happen, crowds come. 00:09:50.599 --> 00:09:54.879 When you start feeding people with five loaves and two fishes, people are definitely going to show up. 00:09:55.259 --> 00:09:55.919 Because they're hungry. 00:09:56.019 --> 00:09:56.539 They want that. 00:09:56.819 --> 00:09:58.079 He's going to draw a crowd. 00:09:58.739 --> 00:10:00.339 But here's why Jesus performs a miracle. 00:10:00.759 --> 00:10:04.199 Every time you see a miracle in scripture, Jesus preaches the word of God. 00:10:05.120 --> 00:10:06.139 Because you know what the miracles do? 00:10:06.139 --> 00:10:08.220 They expose our heart. 00:10:09.279 --> 00:10:11.399 They show us where we are. 00:10:12.120 --> 00:10:15.439 Many times it's just an illustration of where our life is. 00:10:15.600 --> 00:10:18.600 And Jesus uses it to preach the message. 00:10:19.220 --> 00:10:20.120 That's why he came. 00:10:20.720 --> 00:10:22.120 He came to seek and to save. 00:10:22.360 --> 00:10:23.120 How does he do that? 00:10:23.220 --> 00:10:24.519 By preaching the good news. 00:10:24.759 --> 00:10:26.279 By preaching the gospel. 00:10:27.299 --> 00:10:29.019 And the way that we respond. 00:10:29.019 --> 00:10:36.360 The way that we respond to the power of Jesus reveals what we truly believe about him. 00:10:37.079 --> 00:10:38.779 We need to think about that in our own life. 00:10:38.899 --> 00:10:41.159 So, I want us just to walk through this text. 00:10:42.019 --> 00:10:43.379 And we see a few things. 00:10:43.480 --> 00:10:48.699 We see, as we mentioned already in verse 14, we see the power of Jesus is clearly revealed. 00:10:48.700 --> 00:10:53.700 The miracle is simple in the fact of the way that it's described. 00:10:54.020 --> 00:10:55.000 It's very direct. 00:10:55.259 --> 00:10:56.080 It's undeniable. 00:10:56.940 --> 00:11:00.660 This demon was controlling this man and he had stolen this man's voice. 00:11:00.840 --> 00:11:03.660 And Jesus simply removes it and the man speaks. 00:11:04.800 --> 00:11:06.940 Luke doesn't have to embellish it because none was needed. 00:11:07.640 --> 00:11:11.180 For those that were there in the crowd, it was obvious what was going on. 00:11:11.980 --> 00:11:14.520 The miracle itself is not debated. 00:11:14.519 --> 00:11:17.679 But what takes place after is how it happened. 00:11:18.480 --> 00:11:20.519 That's really the issue that they were having. 00:11:21.600 --> 00:11:24.220 And before we really move on, I just want to remind you of a few things. 00:11:24.500 --> 00:11:28.019 In scripture, this demonic oppression, it's never neutral. 00:11:29.079 --> 00:11:31.379 Listen, the enemy is not for you. 00:11:32.319 --> 00:11:34.079 He doesn't care anything about you. 00:11:34.559 --> 00:11:36.220 He doesn't care anything about your family. 00:11:36.480 --> 00:11:38.000 He doesn't care anything about your children. 00:11:38.340 --> 00:11:41.539 No, he came to steal, kill, and destroy. 00:11:41.539 --> 00:11:44.779 And that wasn't some Old Testament, some New Testament. 00:11:45.059 --> 00:11:48.120 No, he's still alive and well today, might I remind you. 00:11:48.459 --> 00:11:52.539 And he walketh about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 00:11:53.019 --> 00:11:54.740 That's the enemy that we're facing. 00:11:55.039 --> 00:11:56.039 He diminishes. 00:11:56.360 --> 00:11:57.240 He enslaves. 00:11:57.480 --> 00:11:58.199 He silences. 00:11:58.559 --> 00:12:01.639 And this man is kind of a picture of what God does. 00:12:01.799 --> 00:12:02.959 I mean, what Satan does. 00:12:03.759 --> 00:12:08.319 Because sometimes what we see here is we see people in the Bible that are bad off like this. 00:12:08.839 --> 00:12:09.860 This man can't speak. 00:12:09.860 --> 00:12:11.139 And we see other people that are paralyzed. 00:12:11.340 --> 00:12:12.340 We see people that are dead. 00:12:12.419 --> 00:12:14.080 We think, man, they're really bad. 00:12:15.159 --> 00:12:16.259 But let me just remind you. 00:12:17.139 --> 00:12:20.919 Before you met Christ, you were dead and your trespasses and sin. 00:12:21.600 --> 00:12:23.860 You were way worse than a guy that couldn't speak. 00:12:24.460 --> 00:12:25.600 We had no hope. 00:12:25.919 --> 00:12:28.180 Hell was the only option that we had. 00:12:28.399 --> 00:12:30.039 And yet, Jesus showed up. 00:12:30.480 --> 00:12:34.519 And really what every miracle does, it kind of points to the gospel. 00:12:34.519 --> 00:12:38.079 Because when Jesus shows up, he replaces that bondage with freedom. 00:12:38.740 --> 00:12:40.039 That we're free in Christ. 00:12:40.299 --> 00:12:42.960 That he's given us a new life and a new hope. 00:12:43.919 --> 00:12:46.299 He replaces that silence with a testimony. 00:12:46.759 --> 00:12:50.639 Listen, if you're saved, you have a testimony. 00:12:52.000 --> 00:12:55.679 And sometimes we look at people and they maybe have what we would call an amazing testimony. 00:12:55.679 --> 00:12:58.219 And God uses that in great ways. 00:12:58.399 --> 00:13:02.339 And you can say, well, I was so far gone and this and that and all these things. 00:13:02.579 --> 00:13:08.279 But listen, if you were dead and now you're alive and you're on your way to heaven, you have a testimony. 00:13:09.159 --> 00:13:10.719 And you should tell somebody about it. 00:13:11.299 --> 00:13:13.599 That's what our whole job is. 00:13:13.779 --> 00:13:16.339 Is to tell others what Jesus did for us. 00:13:16.340 --> 00:13:21.379 We see this man's oppression is replaced with complete restoration. 00:13:22.879 --> 00:13:29.800 And it doesn't matter if you're in a first century village in Israel or in Gainesville, Texas on a cold February morning. 00:13:30.080 --> 00:13:34.879 When Jesus works powerfully in a life, neutrality is impossible. 00:13:36.200 --> 00:13:40.040 And that's the issue that the people, that the crowd is having in this text. 00:13:40.039 --> 00:13:47.799 And more often than not, when God does work in a 00:13:54.899 Maybe sometimes God restores a marriage. 00:13:55.019 --> 00:13:57.319 It's been on the rocks and it restores a life. 00:13:57.419 --> 00:13:59.179 And it seems like it's going down a wrong path. 00:13:59.419 --> 00:14:01.319 And people say this, well, that won't last. 00:14:03.099 --> 00:14:04.679 But if Jesus showed up, guess what? 00:14:04.899 --> 00:14:05.759 It will last. 00:14:06.719 --> 00:14:09.480 There's testimony all over this room where God showed up in your life. 00:14:09.480 --> 00:14:10.980 And you were going down that road. 00:14:11.259 --> 00:14:11.860 And
