Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, 00:01:20.920 --> 00:01:28.460 Lucius of Cyrene, Manian, who had been bought up with Herod the Tetrarch, and Saul. While 00:01:28.460 --> 00:01:34.120 they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, Set apart from me Barnabas 00:01:34.120 --> 00:01:40.920 and Saul, for the work to which I have called them. Well, this morning, as I say, we are starting into a new 00:04:23.240 --> 00:04:32.439 series, a new study where we'll be looking at the book of Acts. Acts is all about God's great mission. 00:04:34.120 --> 00:04:40.579 We're told what that mission is right at the beginning of the book. So if you go to chapter one 00:04:40.579 --> 00:04:49.199 of Acts, back a few pages, Acts chapter one, right at the very beginning, we are told what the mission 00:04:49.199 --> 00:04:54.659 is all about. We'll pick it up in verse three. 00:04:58.339 --> 00:05:03.560 So keep your finger in chapter 13 and chapter one, verse three. 00:05:04.800 --> 00:05:11.980 So this is Jesus, after his death, his resurrection, speaking to his disciples. Verse three, it says, 00:05:11.980 --> 00:05:19.500 after his suffering, after his death, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing 00:05:19.500 --> 00:05:27.660 proves that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of 40 days and spoke about the kingdom 00:05:27.660 --> 00:05:34.879 of God. Well, what did he have to say? Well, go down to verse eight. He gave some instructions. 00:05:34.879 --> 00:05:43.180 He says, you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. That's a supernatural power. 00:05:44.079 --> 00:05:51.800 And you will be my witnesses because they had seen the life of Jesus. They had witnessed his death 00:05:51.800 --> 00:05:58.959 and they had witnessed his resurrection. And he calls them now to be his witnesses in Jerusalem 00:05:58.959 --> 00:06:08.979 and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth. So God's great mission is quite simple. 00:06:09.159 --> 00:06:19.079 It's to see the good news of the risen Jesus go into all the world. His plan is that every people group, 00:06:19.319 --> 00:06:28.240 every language hears about his son, Jesus Christ. And as we read through the book of Acts, 00:06:28.240 --> 00:06:34.040 we can see this mission begin to take effect. There's a couple of maps on the screen now, 00:06:34.100 --> 00:06:40.199 which will help you. So chapters one to eight are all about the good news reaching the people 00:06:40.199 --> 00:06:47.160 in the city of Jerusalem, which were mainly Jewish people. Then when we get to chapters nine to 12, 00:06:47.840 --> 00:06:55.420 it's all about the good news spreading nationally into Judea and beyond the borders of Judea into Samaria. 00:06:55.420 --> 00:07:03.500 And then when we reach chapters 13 to 28, well, it's all about the good news moving out into all the world, 00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:13.020 into places like Turkey and Greece and into Italy and so forth. It's pushing the boundaries further and further. 00:07:13.019 --> 00:07:21.000 Now what I find fascinating is the fact that we are meeting here today, reading the Bible, 00:07:21.759 --> 00:07:27.740 2,000 years after this event, and learning and reading about God's mission, 00:07:28.079 --> 00:07:33.180 is actually evidence that God's plan is being accomplished. 00:07:33.180 --> 00:07:42.459 It's like a stone or rather a rock that has been dropped into a pond and so the good news has this ripple effect, 00:07:43.420 --> 00:07:48.680 spreading out into new lands and to new people, into new areas. 00:07:48.680 --> 00:07:56.660 But Acts is much more than just a history lesson about the spread of Christianity. 00:07:58.220 --> 00:08:07.379 Acts is really about the good news of Jesus Christ and the need for all people to respond to him. 00:08:09.079 --> 00:08:13.699 Now let me show you, let me give you an example of what that good news is. 00:08:13.699 --> 00:08:19.379 They've been told to go and be witnesses of Jesus and as they begin to travel out to these places, 00:08:19.379 --> 00:08:22.079 they bring the message of Jesus Christ. 00:08:22.180 --> 00:08:24.719 I'm going to give you an example of what that message was. 00:08:25.259 --> 00:08:32.860 Many places you could go to in Acts, but the one I'm going to show you is in Acts chapter 3, verse 19. 00:08:32.860 --> 00:08:38.879 It comes in in two parts. 00:08:39.879 --> 00:08:42.060 Acts chapter 3, verse 19. 00:08:42.620 --> 00:08:48.120 This was the message, the good news that they sought to bring as they travelled from place to place. 00:08:49.560 --> 00:08:54.139 First of all, there is the call to personal repentance. 00:08:55.779 --> 00:08:56.920 Verse 19. 00:08:58.440 --> 00:09:00.220 This is what he says, verse 19. 00:09:00.220 --> 00:09:05.560 Repent then, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out, 00:09:06.160 --> 00:09:09.160 that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 00:09:09.840 --> 00:09:15.779 and that he may send the Christ, whom he has appointed for you, even Jesus. 00:09:17.000 --> 00:09:22.279 So they've been explaining the fact that Jesus Christ had come, he had died on a cross. 00:09:23.139 --> 00:09:24.220 Now his death was unique. 00:09:24.940 --> 00:09:26.899 It was different to every other kind of death, 00:09:26.899 --> 00:09:30.720 because it was a death that was taking the place of us. 00:09:31.360 --> 00:09:35.360 Taking the punishment that we deserve for our sins, 00:09:35.519 --> 00:09:37.919 for the things that we have done wrong, thought wrong. 00:09:39.480 --> 00:09:41.259 And the message here is simple. 00:09:41.459 --> 00:09:42.959 Through personal repentance, 00:09:43.840 --> 00:09:47.399 we can be forgiven of all our sin, 00:09:48.539 --> 00:09:52.860 and we can be freed from the judgment that we deserve. 00:09:52.860 --> 00:09:54.779 Now that is good news. 00:09:56.220 --> 00:09:58.620 But there's a second part to the message. 00:09:59.639 --> 00:10:03.200 There is the promise of universal restoration. 00:10:03.460 --> 00:10:04.480 Look at verse 21. 00:10:05.620 --> 00:10:08.399 They go on to say that he, that's Jesus, 00:10:08.879 --> 00:10:14.139 must remain in heaven until the time comes for God to restore everything, 00:10:14.659 --> 00:10:18.539 as he promised long ago through his holy prophets. 00:10:18.539 --> 00:10:22.879 Jesus is saying one day he's going to return, 00:10:22.959 --> 00:10:25.240 he's going to come back again into this world. 00:10:25.759 --> 00:10:29.839 Presently he's in heaven, but he will come back and he will restore, 00:10:30.199 --> 00:10:36.120 he's going to put right everything that is broken in this world. 00:10:37.179 --> 00:10:39.959 He's going to put an end to all death. 00:10:40.799 --> 00:10:42.259 There will be no more funerals. 00:10:42.259 --> 00:10:45.120 He will end all decay, 00:10:45.939 --> 00:10:47.080 no more disease, 00:10:47.819 --> 00:11:09.480 --> 00:11:12.519 whether we're from a religious background or a non-religious background, 00:11:12.799 --> 00:11:16.519 those are the kinds of things we all dream for and we all long for. 00:11:16.720 --> 00:11:19.000 That's the kind of world that we all want. 00:11:20.439 --> 00:11:21.279 And Jesus says, 00:11:21.379 --> 00:11:22.840 one day I'm going to return, 00:11:23.759 --> 00:11:25.500 and I'm going to restore everything. 00:11:26.120 --> 00:11:29.799 Now that is good news for everyone. 00:11:30.559 --> 00:11:32.840 The promise of a universal restoration, 00:11:32.840 --> 00:11:35.580 but the way to be part of that 00:11:35.580 --> 00:11:42.120 is to respond to Jesus with personal repentance and faith. 00:11:43.000 --> 00:11:46.720 And this was the good news that began to spread from the city of Jerusalem, 00:11:46.920 --> 00:11:47.899 these few people, 00:11:48.460 --> 00:11:53.040 and it began to branch out into all Judea and to Samaria, 00:11:53.340 --> How would it get to a little island like Ireland? 00:12:03.900 --> 00:12:05.060 How would it reach here? 00:12:06.200 --> 00:12:08.760 Well, as the story progresses through Acts, 00:12:08.920 --> 00:12:14.580 God's plan is to use his local church for global mission. 00:12:15.860 --> 00:12:16.860 Through the church, 00:12:17.300 --> 00:12:19.260 God spreads the good news 00:12:19.260 --> 00:12:22.980 and the mission of God is accomplished. 00:12:22.980 --> 00:12:26.720 And that brings us to chapter 13, 00:12:26.940 --> 00:12:30.580 where we are introduced to a church in Antioch, desperate for power, 00:13:40.580 --> 00:13:42.960 and would kill anybody to make sure they kept it. 00:13:43.019 --> 00:13:45.159 Well, Mannion, well, he was related to that family. 00:13:46.200 --> 00:13:49.340 And also part of the church was a man called Saul. 00:13:50.460 --> 00:13:52.100 You might remember him as well. 00:13:52.179 --> 00:13:53.759 He was that religious fanatic 00:13:53.759 --> 00:13:57.279 who used to go around looking for followers of Jesus, 00:13:57.759 --> 00:13:59.399 kill them, often by stoning, 00:13:59.860 --> 00:14:01.379 and then have them put in prison. 00:14:03.039 --> 00:14:05.860 So here we have a culturally, religiously, 00:14:05.919 --> 00:14:09.059 and racially diverse bunch of people. 00:14:09.059 --> 00:14:11.579 Now, in most cases, 00:14:11.579 --> 00:14:13.679 that's really not a good mix, is it? 00:14:14.019 --> 00:14:16.699 If you're thinking about a mission to reach the world, 00:14:17.079 --> 00:14:19.379 you wouldn't kind of get this collection of people together. 00:14:19.500 --> 00:14:21.299 It's a recipe for disaster. 00:14:21.539 --> 00:14:23.279 They're all going to be arguing and fighting. 00:14:24.659 --> 00:14:26.879 But what unites them all together 00:14:26.879 --> 00:14:31.059 is that they have all heard the good news about Jesus. 00:14:31.059 --> 00:14:36.799 You can see that in chapter 11, verse 20. 00:14:36.799 --> 00:14:40.799 As people went about with the news, 00:14:40.919 --> 00:14:41.899 verse 20, it says, 00:14:42.000 --> 00:14:45.740 Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, 00:14:46.179 --> 00:14:47.579 went to Antioch 00:14:47.579 --> 00:14:50.439 and began to speak to the Greeks also, 00:14:51.199 --> 00:14:54.659 telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus. 00:14:55.939 --> 00:14:58.679 The good news of what Christ had done. 00:14:58.679 --> 00:15:00.620 The Lord's hand was with them, 00:15:01.120 --> 00:15:03.679 and a great number of people believed
