all kinds of backgrounds and experiences. 00:07:12.120 --> 00:07:15.240 And we are, as a group, 00:07:15.480 --> 00:07:18.579 we might have never been friends otherwise, 00:07:19.100 --> 00:07:21.639 apart from the fact that we've been brought together 00:07:21.639 --> 00:07:23.360 by our common brotherhood 00:07:23.360 --> 00:07:25.120 and by the blood of Jesus Christ. 00:07:26.780 --> 00:07:29.819 That's because God has ordained to save a people 00:07:29.819 --> 00:07:33.480 from every tribe, nation, and tongue. 00:07:33.480 --> 00:07:38.600 And so in this passage, missionary work takes Paul and Silas 00:07:38.600 --> 00:07:41.200 and his companions to all kinds of people, 00:07:41.439 --> 00:07:46.060 to a wealthy female merchant who was a Gentile God-fearer, 00:07:46.580 --> 00:07:48.939 to a demonized slave girl, 00:07:49.580 --> 00:07:51.480 and also to a Philippian jailer. 00:07:52.480 --> 00:07:55.420 But despite their wildly different socioeconomic, 00:07:55.840 --> 00:07:57.480 religious, and likely even ethnic backgrounds, 00:07:57.480 --> 00:08:02.500 Paul proclaims the same message of salvation to them all. 00:08:03.439 --> 00:08:06.300 And from this, we learn that as we faithfully speak 00:08:06.300 --> 00:08:07.240 the word of the Lord, 00:08:07.680 --> 00:08:10.100 God powerfully acts to save. 00:08:10.420 --> 00:08:11.780 That's the main point of this passage. 00:08:12.120 --> 00:08:13.220 We're going to look at the profiles 00:08:13.220 --> 00:08:14.660 of the three different people we encounter. 00:08:14.920 --> 00:08:16.780 In turn, first, God's redirection from the preceding passage, 00:08:24.819 --> 00:08:26.680 Paul and his companions sail into Philippi, 00:08:26.680 --> 00:08:28.620 which is described in verse 12 00:08:28.620 --> 00:08:31.319 as a leading city of the district of Macedonia 00:08:31.319 --> 00:08:32.440 and a Roman colony. 00:08:33.840 --> 00:08:35.879 In every city Paul visits, 00:08:36.039 --> 00:08:39.500 it's his custom, if you look at the book of Acts, 00:08:39.820 --> 00:08:41.580 it's his custom to enter into the city 00:08:41.580 --> 00:08:43.560 and then to go first to the Jewish synagogue 00:08:43.560 --> 00:08:45.419 where he'd encounter Jews 00:08:45.419 --> 00:08:47.039 who are already familiar with the Old Testament 00:08:47.039 --> 00:08:48.659 and he'd proclaim the gospel to them, 00:08:48.720 --> 00:08:51.159 tell them that the promised Messiah has come. 00:08:52.360 --> 00:08:54.080 However, his routine in Philippi 00:08:54.080 --> 00:08:55.060 is a little bit different. 00:08:55.059 --> 00:08:57.019 In those days, 00:08:57.179 --> 00:08:58.599 a Jewish community was required 00:08:58.599 --> 00:09:01.179 to have a minimum of 10 Jewish men 00:09:01.179 --> 00:09:02.500 to constitute a synagogue. 00:09:03.479 --> 00:09:06.439 And in places that did not have an official synagogue, 00:09:06.839 --> 00:09:09.059 Jewish people and Gentile God-fearers 00:09:09.059 --> 00:09:11.359 preferred to meet near a body of water 00:09:11.359 --> 00:09:13.479 where they could ritually cleanse themselves 00:09:13.479 --> 00:09:14.279 before prayer. 00:09:15.299 --> 00:09:16.739 So here it seems that 00:09:16.739 --> 00:09:18.879 there weren't enough Jewish heads of household 00:09:18.879 --> 00:09:20.199 to constitute a synagogue, 00:09:20.200 --> 00:09:23.080 and so the women met on their own 00:09:23.080 --> 00:09:25.360 outside the city gate by the riverside 00:09:25.360 --> 00:09:27.480 so that they might pray. 00:09:29.160 --> 00:09:31.240 And so Paul and his companions, 00:09:31.400 --> 00:09:33.680 supposing that there is a place of prayer there, 00:09:34.560 --> 00:09:37.220 go and indeed they find a group of women who was a worshiper of God. 00:09:51.820 --> 00:09:53.860 Lydia was a seller of purple goods, 00:09:53.940 --> 00:09:56.800 which was a luxury good in the ancient days. 00:09:57.640 --> 00:09:59.440 And since, as verse 15 tells us, 00:09:59.480 --> 00:10:00.780 that Lydia was wealthy enough 00:10:00.780 --> 00:10:02.700 to host Paul and his companions 00:10:02.700 --> 00:10:05.180 as a patroness, a hostess, 00:10:05.720 --> 00:10:07.740 she was likely a well-to-do woman. 00:10:08.659 --> 00:10:10.240 But even more relevantly, 00:10:10.379 --> 00:10:12.139 Lydia was a worshiper of God. 00:10:13.100 --> 00:10:14.799 We are not told that she was a Jew, 00:10:14.919 --> 00:10:15.799 they would have told us that, 00:10:15.899 --> 00:10:17.620 but we're told that she is a worshiper of God, 00:10:17.680 --> 00:10:18.799 which is another way of saying 00:10:18.799 --> 00:10:21.200 that she is a Gentile God-fearer. 00:10:21.799 --> 00:10:23.779 Someone who was sympathetic to Judaism 00:10:23.779 --> 00:10:25.500 and prayed to Israel's God 00:10:25.500 --> 00:10:27.620 but was not yet a full Jewish convert. 00:10:28.940 --> 00:10:30.460 And verse 14 tells us that 00:10:30.460 --> 00:10:32.560 the Lord opened her heart 00:10:32.560 --> 00:10:34.860 to pay attention to what was said by Paul. 00:10:34.860 --> 00:10:38.659 We see both Lydia's human response 00:10:38.659 --> 00:10:41.320 and God's sovereign grace 00:10:41.320 --> 00:10:43.899 at work here in what's happening with Lydia. 00:10:44.740 --> 00:10:47.560 Verse 14 tells us that Lydia heard Paul. 00:10:48.180 --> 00:10:50.919 She's the one who gave Paul a hearing. 00:10:51.779 --> 00:10:52.720 But it also says, 00:10:52.980 --> 00:10:55.720 the Lord opened her heart to pay attention. 00:10:57.159 --> 00:10:59.560 People would never believe in Jesus 00:10:59.560 --> 00:11:03.060 apart from God opening up their hearts to believe. 00:11:03.059 --> 00:11:05.979 But in order for them to believe, 00:11:06.359 --> 00:11:08.139 someone also must speak 00:11:08.139 --> 00:11:10.079 the good news of Jesus Christ to them. 00:11:11.279 --> 00:11:14.219 As we faithfully speak the word of the Lord, 00:11:14.439 --> 00:11:16.639 God powerfully acts to save. 00:11:17.219 --> 00:11:19.219 So Paul spoke the good news of Jesus 00:11:19.219 --> 00:11:22.500 and God opened Lydia's heart to believe. 00:11:23.339 --> 00:11:25.459 Lydia had been learning about Israel's God, 00:11:25.599 --> 00:11:27.699 but she was not yet aware 00:11:27.699 --> 00:11:30.000 that the promised Messiah had come. 00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:32.860 She thought that she needed to become Jewish 00:11:32.860 --> 00:11:33.919 in order to be saved. 00:11:34.620 --> 00:11:36.279 But Apostle Paul declared the good news 00:11:36.279 --> 00:11:38.919 that by Jesus' death on the cross for our sins 00:11:38.919 --> 00:11:39.899 and by His resurrection, 00:11:40.419 --> 00:11:41.899 the dividing wall of hostility 00:11:41.899 --> 00:11:43.159 between Jews and Gentiles 00:11:43.159 --> 00:11:44.259 has been torn down, 00:11:44.639 --> 00:11:46.100 and that now all people 00:11:46.100 --> 00:11:47.379 who repent of their sins 00:11:47.379 --> 00:11:48.299 and believe in Jesus 00:11:48.299 --> 00:11:49.940 for forgiveness of sins 00:11:49.940 --> 00:11:51.480 may be saved 00:11:51.480 --> 00:11:54.220 by grace through faith alone. 00:11:54.220 --> 00:11:58.540 Some of you here may not yet be a follower of Jesus. 00:11:59.580 --> 00:12:00.700 Maybe you are like Lydia. 00:12:01.740 --> 00:12:03.759 You've 00:13:05.639 --> 00:13:07.359 So it says she urges them. 00:13:07.679 --> 00:13:10.439 She insists on serving them, 00:13:10.559 --> 00:13:10.979 hosting them. 00:13:11.000 --> 00:13:12.599 She prevails upon them. 00:13:13.379 --> 00:13:14.240 And in doing so, 00:13:14.299 --> 00:13:15.539 she becomes not only 00:13:15.539 --> 00:13:18.179 the first European convert to Christianity, 00:13:18.179 --> 00:13:22.759 but also the hostess of the first church in Europe, 00:13:23.299 --> 00:13:26.019 as we see in verse 40. 00:13:28.179 --> 00:13:31.159 Especially as we move into our new location next week, 00:13:31.299 --> 00:13:33.139 and as we relaunch community groups 00:13:33.139 --> 00:13:35.000 and children's ministry next week as well, 00:13:35.359 --> 00:13:37.479 there will be a lot of opportunities for us 00:13:37.479 --> 00:13:39.120 to serve God and His saints. 00:13:39.120 --> 00:13:42.799 But I pray that God will give all of us 00:13:42.799 --> 00:13:44.879 Lydia's heart to serve, 00:13:45.279 --> 00:13:47.679 to see it as a privilege and a blessing to serve, 00:13:49.200 --> 00:13:50.860 for it's better to give than to receive. 00:13:53.019 --> 00:13:55.340 And
