Tozer famously said, he said, 00:04:24.279 --> 00:04:31.099 What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us. 00:04:31.479 --> 00:04:37.639 What comes into our mind when we think about God is the most important thing about us. 00:04:38.139 --> 00:04:42.599 But we also must consider is how God looks at us. 00:04:42.739 --> 00:04:49.959 Yes, we must consider what we think about God, but we also must consider what He thinks about us. 00:04:49.959 --> 00:04:53.519 In fact, C.S. Lewis said, he said, 00:04:53.579 --> 00:05:00.199 I read in a periodical the other day, that the fundamental thing is how we think of God. 00:05:01.019 --> 00:05:01.599 He said, 00:05:02.180 --> 00:05:04.379 By God Himself, it is not. 00:05:04.979 --> 00:05:10.579 How God thinks of us is not only more important, but infinitely more important. 00:05:10.579 --> 00:05:20.379 Indeed, how we think of Him is of no importance except insofar as it is related to how He thinks of us. 00:05:20.800 --> 00:05:25.399 Now, understanding the context of where these great men of the faith were coming from, 00:05:25.459 --> 00:05:27.299 I don't think they're contradicting each other. 00:05:27.360 --> 00:05:34.959 In fact, I think they're complementing one another when it comes to how God sees us and how we see Him. 00:05:34.959 --> 00:05:41.519 Because how we see Him is in direct correlation to how He sees us. 00:05:42.199 --> 00:05:47.000 And so, when we begin to think about how God sees us and how see how God sees us in light of Jesus. 00:08:26.280 --> 00:08:32.419 And at the same time, how we see God in light of what he has done for us. 00:08:33.120 --> 00:08:38.399 And as we do this, there are a handful of beautiful and life-giving truths 00:08:38.399 --> 00:08:41.460 that I wanted to bring our attention to this morning. 00:08:41.460 --> 00:08:49.000 And the first is the overarching theme of this passage that we'll be using to kind of set the stage 00:08:49.000 --> 00:08:51.040 for us to understand who Jesus is. 00:08:51.160 --> 00:08:55.019 And then we'll be able to see some of the wonderful realizations, 00:08:55.180 --> 00:08:58.879 the comforting realizations that we have in light of that. 00:08:59.379 --> 00:09:04.120 And so the first thing that I want us to see clearly today is this. 00:09:04.580 --> 00:09:08.800 That Jesus, as our perfect high priest, 00:09:08.799 --> 00:09:15.179 I want us to clearly see Jesus, our perfect high priest. 00:09:15.799 --> 00:09:17.659 Verse 14 in chapter 4 says, 00:09:17.659 --> 00:09:23.659 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens. 00:09:23.839 --> 00:09:28.399 Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. 00:09:29.620 --> 00:09:36.019 Here we begin to see Jesus as this great and glorious and perfect high priest. 00:09:36.019 --> 00:09:40.279 But this is also something that he continues throughout the book of Hebrews 00:09:40.279 --> 00:09:46.220 and something that he will highlight specifically in the first part of Hebrews chapter 5. 00:09:46.840 --> 00:09:49.899 And so I want us to almost see this as bookends, 00:09:50.039 --> 00:09:54.059 but to the comforting truths that we'll find in the midst of this. 00:09:54.419 --> 00:10:01.740 And so here in verse 14, he declares that Jesus is our great high priest. 00:10:01.740 --> 00:10:10.259 And then in chapter 5, he begins to give us some examples of what this high priest does for us. 00:10:10.600 --> 00:10:14.440 And so we see Jesus as our great high priest. 00:10:14.539 --> 00:10:18.580 And then in chapter 5, we get to see a few of those things, 00:10:18.659 --> 00:10:21.299 a few of those examples of how this plays out. 00:10:21.720 --> 00:10:26.860 To begin with, in chapter 5, verses 1 through 3, we see these words. 00:10:26.860 --> 00:10:56.840 It says, 00:10:56.840 --> 00:11:02.060 What we see is this example of how this plays out is our great and perfect high priest 00:11:02.060 --> 00:11:06.360 understands us and is able to save us. 00:11:06.840 --> 00:11:10.460 He understands us and he's able to save us. 00:11:10.879 --> 00:11:17.259 The priests were chosen from among men so that they understood what everyone was going through. 00:11:17.700 --> 00:11:20.980 They were going through many of the same things that they were going through. 00:11:20.980 --> 00:11:29.200 And so they were chosen from among men so that they could sympathize and understand the things that the people were struggling with. 00:11:29.700 --> 00:11:35.399 But it also tells us here that the priests in the Old Testament were sinners themselves. 00:11:36.200 --> 00:11:42.759 In fact, they had to offer sacrifices for their own sins just as they did for those of the people. 00:11:42.759 --> 00:11:49.720 But Jesus, it tells us, and we're going to highlight this truth more in just a moment, 00:11:49.799 --> 00:11:58.399 but it tells us that he was able to sympathize, but he was able to sympathize without sin. 00:11:58.840 --> 00:12:07.860 So Jesus can relate to us, but unlike the high priest, he can also fully save us. 00:12:07.860 --> 00:12:12.840 For this reason, he far surpasses the Old Testament priest. 00:12:13.440 --> 00:12:15.019 Verses 4 through 6, it says, 00:12:15.180 --> 00:12:56.279 --> 00:12:58.479 After the order of Melchizedek. 00:12:58.559 --> 00:13:03.839 Now, we're going to address this and look at this more fully in a few weeks from now 00:13:03.840 --> 00:13:05.240 when we get to chapter 7. 00:13:05.740 --> 00:13:10.840 But for our purposes today, it's really important for us to understand something about Melchizedek. 00:13:11.759 --> 00:13:15.480 You see, Melchizedek was seen as a priestly king. 00:13:15.660 --> 00:13:19.460 He was both seen as a priest and as a king. 00:13:19.840 --> 00:13:25.360 And so when we see that Jesus is after the order of Melchizedek, a priest forever, 00:13:25.460 --> 00:13:29.700 after this order, we understand that we serve a priestly king. 00:13:29.700 --> 00:13:34.500 He is our high priest who is also the king of everything. 00:13:35.320 --> 00:13:37.040 And so we begin to see this. 00:13:37.620 --> 00:13:39.960 And then in verses 7 through 10, it tells us, 00:13:40.060 --> 00:13:45.040 In the days of high priest has shown us what perfect obedience looks like. 00:14:17.899 --> 00:14:26.079 In this passage, we are told that Jesus suffered greatly when he laid down his life for us. 00:14:26.080 --> 00:14:31.180 He suffered greatly during that time, and he was obedient through that. 00:14:31.720 --> 00:14:37.180 If you'll remember, in the garden, Jesus cries out to God, knowing what's coming. 00:14:37.540 --> 00:14:43.440 He says, Lord, if there is another way, if there's another way that doesn't involve me dying, 00:14:43.560 --> 00:14:49.780 going to the cross and dying, if there's another way that doesn't involve this separation between us 00:14:49.779 --> 00:14:54.500 that's about to happen, Lord, if there's another way, let's do that. 00:14:55.399 --> 00:14:57.600 But there wasn't another way. 00:14:58.199 --> 00:15:02.779 So he willingly submitted himself to God's plan. 00:15:03.839 --> 00:15:10.860 You see, submission is a difficult thing for us and really not a very popular topic for us to consider 00:15:10.860 --> 00:15:17.259 and to talk about, but we are called to submit to whatever authorities are in our life 00:15:17.259 --> 00:15:19.399 and, most importantly, to God. 00:15:20.220 --> 00:15:24.100 And when God says no, it can be difficult to submit. 00:15:25.100 --> 00:15:32.539 When God says no, it can be difficult to take that in and process that and still follow him. 00:15:32.539 --> 00:15:43.439 But Christ models for us submission to what might be the greatest and hardest no that God has ever given. 00:15:44.039 --> 00:15:49.459 When this passage says that Jesus learned obedience through what he suffered, 00:15:50.419 --> 00:15:54.539 it's not referring to anything about Jesus ever being disobedient. 00:15:54.839 --> 00:15:55.779 It's not that at all. 00:15:55.779 --> 00:16:03.120 We know that Jesus was perfect, but rather it emphasizes Jesus' human experience 00:16:03.120 --> 00:16:09.379 and being human who learned to obey God even in the midst of great suffering. 00:16:10.339 --> 00:16:14.019 And so if you are suffering and find it difficult to be obedient to God, 00:16:14.559 --> 00:16:20.600 then take comfort in knowing that Jesus understands that better than anyone. 00:16:20.600 --> 00:16:26.540 And so putting all of this together as Jesus is our great and glorious high priest 00:16:26.540 --> 00:16:30.300 means that Jesus is the only one that can save. 00:16:30.779 --> 00:16:35.620 This means that trusting in him is the only way that we can go from death to life. 00:16:35.960 --> 00:16:42.120 And so we Charlotte for just a moment. 00:17:17.120 --> 00:17:19.500 You see, Charlotte is fiercely independent. 00:17:19.500 --> 00:17:20.660 She is opinionated. 00:17:21.059 --> 00:17:22.000 She's just like her mother. 00:17:22.079 --> 00:17:24.579 I mean, she's, you know, she's strong-willed. 00:17:25.619 --> 00:17:28.299 She's independent, does all of these things. 00:17:28.480 --> 00:17:31.900 And recently she learned to ride a bike. 00:17:32.299 --> 00:17:33.740 Now she's learning to ride the bike. 00:17:33.740 --> 00:17:38.740 And now that she's learned to ride the bike, she doesn't want anybody to help her with that. 00:17:39.200 --> 00:17:40.420 Don't help her get started. 00:17:40.620 --> 00:17:42.380 Don't give her a little push up the hill. 00:17:42.620 --> 00:17:48.839 If you do independence things are things that are celebrated in our culture, and they should be. 00:18:06.019 --> 00:18:11.240 The problem comes when we try to apply that independence to our faith. 00:18:11.799 --> 00:18:17.819 When we try to apply this independence to religion and our understanding of who Jesus is. 00:18:17.819 --> 00:18:22.519 And what happens, we end up trying to fix our problem on our own. 00:18:23.139 --> 00:18:33.179 We may recognize we're a sinner, but our fix to the problem is to sin less, try harder, come to church more, give more in the offering plate. 00:18:33.939 --> 00:18:36.899 But the problem is this doesn't fix our problem. 00:18:37.559 --> 00:18:43.759 You see, the message of Hebrews 4, 14 through 5, 10 is that we need an intercessor. 00:18:43.879 --> try, we can't do this. 00:18:56.859 --> 00:19:02.339 You see, the Christian life is not about being independent. 00:19:03.039 --> 00:19:04.639 It's not about being independent. 00:19:04.759 --> 00:19:10.779 The Christian life is about being in dependence on Christ. 00:19:11.659 --> 00:19:14.579 It's not about being independent and doing everything on our own. 00:19:14.579 --> 00:19:21.179 It's all about being dependent on Christ to accomplish what we couldn't accomplish. 00:19:21.939 --> 00:19:26.539 And so we see this all in Jesus as our perfect high priest. 00:19:27.159 --> 00:19:34.740 But some things that we see that are comforting from this is we find great comfort in our confession. 00:19:34.740 --> 00:19:38.519 We find great comfort in our confession. 00:19:39.140 But in addition to our confession of this historical Jesus, we are confessing the good news. 00:20:31.220 --> 00:20:34.200 We're confessing the gospel with this. 00:20:34.200 --> 00:20:43.700 In Romans 10, 9, Paul says, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, 00:20:43.799 --> 00:20:45.019 then you will be what? 00:20:45.680 --> 00:20:47.720 Then you will be saved. 00:20:48.880 --> 00:20:52.380 This is the hope that we build our lives on. 00:20:52.880 --> 00:20:57.559 The author says, let us hold fast to our confession. 00:20:58.180 --> 00:21:02.840 In other words, let us not abandon this confession when times get hard. 00:21:02.839 --> 00:21:05.179 Rather, let us lean into it. 00:21:05.519 --> 00:21:10.439 Let us lean into this confession when life's not going the way that we think it should. 00:21:10.839 --> 00:21:17.000 When time is hard, let us not run away from this confession, but let looks at us, he sees the righteousness of his son surrounding us. 00:21:51.180 --> 00:22:03.500 We can have eternal security in heaven, not because of our actions, but because of what someone who is able to intercede did for us, namely Jesus Christ. 00:22:04.380 --> 00:22:07.039 And he will continue to do that forever. 00:22:07.039 --> 00:22:15.359 You see, just as David's victory over Goliath in the Old Testament became his people's victory over Goliath, 00:22:15.779 --> 00:22:24.659 now Jesus' victory over sin, death, hell, and the grave becomes our victory over those things. 00:22:25.019
