fall of Saul, Israel's first king, 00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:24.879 and we've seen David more recently come on the scene as God's chosen and anointed, 00:00:25.580 --> 00:00:27.039 the future king of Israel. 00:00:27.039 --> 00:00:35.500 But now, more recently, Saul has been plotting against David and opposing him. 00:00:37.399 --> 00:00:42.460 I wonder if you've ever been in a situation where it feels like the world is against you, 00:00:43.340 --> 00:00:46.640 where the people around you are out to get you. 00:00:47.859 --> 00:00:55.039 Maybe you have a fault-finding boss or professor who seems to be constantly criticizing you, 00:00:55.039 --> 00:01:03.100 constantly ignoring your request for help, trying to fire you or fail you. 00:01:04.659 --> 00:01:08.060 Maybe you've been in a people in authority over you can't be trusted, where do you turn? 00:01:47.319 --> 00:01:52.259 This is a situation that David was in at the beginning of this passage tonight. 00:01:53.379 --> 00:01:58.859 In the last two chapters, Saul, who is both the king of Israel, the ruler, and also David's boss, 00:02:00.019 --> 00:02:01.679 David worked in King Saul's court. 00:02:01.680 --> 00:02:06.460 Saul has tried to pin him to the wall with a spear on three separate occasions. 00:02:07.500 --> 00:02:10.180 Saul set him up by sending him out to fight against the Philistines, 00:02:10.260 --> 00:02:14.760 hoping that they would kill him, giving him no military support. 00:02:15.659 --> 00:02:19.460 Saul spoke to his son and his servants and told them to kill David. 00:02:20.260 --> 00:02:24.640 Saul sent messengers to David's house to watch him all night and kill him in the morning. 00:02:27.780 --> 00:02:28.900 So David's on the run. 00:02:31.680 --> 00:02:38.560 And at the beginning of this chapter, David goes to the one person that he knows he can trust. 00:02:39.800 --> 00:02:45.700 Now surprisingly, this person is also King Saul's son, Jonathan. 00:02:47.300 --> 00:02:52.920 What we'll see in this chapter is Jonathan's loyalty to David. 00:02:54.180 --> 00:02:59.159 His steadfast, sacrificial loyalty to David. 00:02:59.159 --> 00:03:07.199 And this chapter is one of the most amazing stories of friendship, of brotherhood, of loyalty, anywhere in the Bible. 00:03:08.639 --> 00:03:10.379 So I want to walk us through the story. 00:03:11.560 --> 00:03:14.599 It's pretty long, so I'm going to read some of it and summarize other parts. 00:03:14.680 --> 00:03:20.400 And then I'm going to ask us what can we take away from this picture of loyalty and friendship. 00:03:20.400 --> 00:03:26.840 So verse 1, David fled from Naoth and Ramah and came and said before Jonathan, 00:03:27.560 --> 00:03:28.300 What have I done? 00:03:28.540 --> 00:03:29.439 What is my guilt? 00:03:29.879 --> 00:03:32.780 And what is my sin before your father that he seeks my life? 00:03:32.819 --> 00:03:37.060 In other words, is there any rhyme or reason to what Saul is doing? 00:03:38.480 --> 00:03:41.400 Is there anything that I need to understand? 00:03:41.400 --> 00:03:45.599 Is there anything I can do to avoid making him mad at me? 00:03:47.300 --> 00:03:49.080 Now at first, Jonathan's a little bit naive. 00:03:49.360 --> 00:03:52.319 Verse 2, he said to him, Far from it you shall not die. 00:03:53.180 --> 00:03:56.759 Behold, my father does nothing either great or small without disclosing it to me. 00:03:56.800 --> 00:03:58.460 And why should my father hide this from me? 00:03:58.500 --> 00:03:59.480 It is not so. 00:04:01.620 --> 00:04:06.319 But David vowed again, saying, Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes. 00:04:06.319 --> 00:04:09.939 And he thinks, Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved. 00:04:10.079 --> 00:04:17.420 But truly, as the Lord lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death. 00:04:19.459 --> 00:04:24.539 Jonathan said to David, Whatever you say, I will do it for you. 00:04:25.539 --> 00:04:32.060 So David then proposes a plan for Jonathan to sound out Saul's motives at the king's monthly dinner party 00:04:32.060 --> 00:04:35.659 while David remains safely in hiding for a day or two. 00:04:36.319 --> 00:04:39.099 Verse 8, David says, Deal kindly with your servant. 00:04:40.219 --> 00:04:44.980 For you have brought your servant into a covenant of the Lord with you. 00:04:45.740 --> 00:04:51.480 Now flip back a page for just a second to chapter 18 and verse 3. 00:04:55.159 --> 00:04:59.980 It says, Then Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as his own soul. 00:05:00.560 --> 00:05:05.719 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David and his armor. 00:05:05.720 --> 00:05:08.480 And even his sword and his bow and his belt. 00:05:10.480 --> 00:05:12.660 Now that might sound a little odd. 00:05:14.040 --> 00:05:19.060 You might be wondering, What exactly is this covenant between David and Jonathan? 00:05:19.060 --> 00:05:31.340 In modern times, some people have speculated, perhaps Jonathan and David had, perhaps there was a sexual dimension to this covenant between Jonathan and David. 00:05:32.160 --> 00:05:34.780 But that's actually not what's going on at all. 00:05:35.899 --> 00:05:38.740 There's nothing sexual going on between them. 00:05:38.740 --> 00:05:42.740 What is going on is that Jonathan was the king's son. 00:05:43.680 --> 00:05:47.300 Which meant he was in line as the heir to the throne. 00:05:49.560 --> 00:05:54.540 He would receive the power and authority that belonged to his father, King Saul. 00:05:54.540 --> 00:05:59.520 But Jonathan also knew that God had said to Saul, 00:06:00.300 --> 00:06:02.560 Saul, you have disobeyed me. 00:06:03.760 --> 00:06:05.920 And so I am not going to let your kingdom continue. 00:06:08.600 --> 00:06:13.500 And God had instead chosen David to replace Saul as the future king of Israel. 00:06:13.879 --> 00:06:18.080 And Jonathan knew this because Samuel had proclaimed it as the prophet of God. 00:06:18.079 --> 00:06:21.579 And Jonathan says, You know what? 00:06:22.740 --> 00:06:24.659 I'm going to be loyal to what God says. 00:06:26.539 --> 00:06:33.399 Even when it conflicts with my own self-interest and my father's plans for my life. 00:06:34.379 --> 00:06:39.019 I'm going to be loyal to what God says, even if it means giving up everything that belongs to me. 00:06:39.019 --> 00:06:48.799 And so that's why Jonathan takes off his royal robe and gives David his armor and all the symbols of his authority. 00:06:50.379 --> 00:06:55.759 He was symbolically transferring his royal and military authority to David and saying, 00:06:56.740 --> 00:06:59.680 It belongs to you because God has chosen you. 00:07:02.500 --> 00:07:05.599 Now Jonathan and David do express deep affection for each other. 00:07:05.600 --> 00:07:09.760 It says their souls were knit together in loyalty. 00:07:10.960 --> 00:07:15.900 At the end of this chapter, chapter 20, they embrace each other and weep when they part. 00:07:16.879 --> 00:07:19.600 Their brothers, their comrades, their friends. 00:07:21.400 --> 00:07:27.140 And you know, just as a side point, deep affection is part of God's plan, not just for married couples, 00:07:28.140 --> 00:07:30.420 but also for same-sex friendships. 00:07:30.420 --> 00:07:40.620 You know, God didn't, in particular, God did not design men to be loners who never express any emotion to each other. 00:07:42.400 --> 00:07:48.560 God designed us to flourish in bonds of brotherhood, as a band of brothers. 00:07:48.560 --> 00:07:55.439 And with brotherly and sisterly love towards one another. 00:07:56.959 --> 00:08:00.980 As we're bound together by a common pursuit of God's purposes in our lives. 00:08:02.040 --> 00:08:07.680 So that's what we see with David and Jonathan, that they're bound together by a common pursuit of God's purposes in their lives, 00:08:08.160 --> 00:08:10.240 by their loyalty and their friendship. 00:08:10.240 --> 00:08:16.579 And Jonathan being willing to sacrifice his own position and his own future for the sake of what God had said. 00:08:17.180 --> 00:08:18.280 And God's plan for David. 00:08:18.939 --> 00:08:22.639 So, Jonathan's pledged allegiance to David as the future king of Israel. 00:08:23.040 --> 00:08:26.660 And Jonathan stands by his word to protect him even when David is in mortal danger. 00:08:27.920 --> 00:08:29.639 Now go back to chapter 20. 00:08:31.160 --> 00:08:32.500 Go down to verse 18. 00:08:34.879 --> 00:08:38.379 Jonathan and David work out a signal. 00:08:38.379 --> 00:08:43.080 Basically, David's going to go in, Jonathan says, verse 18, 00:08:43.159 --> 00:08:48.000 Tomorrow's the new moon, the monthly dinner party, and you will be missed because your seat will be empty. 00:08:48.919 --> 00:08:52.019 On the third day, go down quickly to the place where you hid yourself. 00:08:53.019 --> 00:08:57.919 And basically, Jonathan says, you go into a field, and here's our signal. 00:08:58.019 --> 00:08:58.820 We're going to have this signal. 00:08:58.919 --> 00:09:00.019 I'm going to shoot three arrows. 00:09:00.559 --> 00:09:05.460 And you're basically either going to know it's either going to be all clear or run for your life. 00:09:05.460 --> 00:09:15.960 And they're creating this signal so that nobody is able to see, that they're basically to protect David. 00:09:17.040 --> 00:09:21.480 So that nobody potentially even have to see them communicating. 00:09:23.259 --> 00:09:27.220 Anyway, so verse 24, David hides in the field. 00:09:27.360 --> 00:09:28.300 Jonathan goes to the dinner. 00:09:28.400 --> 00:09:29.440 That day, nothing happens. 00:09:30.139 --> 00:09:30.980 Saul doesn't say anything. 00:09:30.980 --> 00:09:33.980 Second day, Saul says, verse 27, he says, 00:09:34.060 --> 00:09:36.360 Why has not the son of Jesse come to the meal? 00:09:37.100 --> 00:09:38.539 Either yesterday or today. 00:09:39.879 --> 00:09:43.340 Now already, in the way that Saul speaks of David, there's a hint of his attitude. 00:09:43.759 --> 00:09:45.940 He calls him the son of Jesse. 00:09:47.399 --> 00:09:49.740 In other words, he doesn't even call him by his real name. 00:09:51.440 --> 00:09:53.860 That son of a farmer. 00:09:57.300 --> 00:10:00.019 Verse 28, Jonathan replies, 00:10:00.019 --> 00:10:03.100 David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem. 00:10:03.159 --> 00:10:03.919 He said, let me go. 00:10:04.039 --> 00:10:05.759 Our clan holds a sacrifice in the city. 00:10:05.840 --> 00:10:07.319 My brothers commanded me to be there. 00:10:08.139 --> 00:10:12.100 So now if I have found favor in your eyes, let me get away and see my brothers. 00:10:12.199 --> 00:10:14.000 For this reason, he hasn't come to the king's table. 00:10:14.120 --> 00:10:16.259 In verse 30, everything comes to a climax. 00:10:18.439 --> 00:10:21.799 Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan. 00:10:21.799 --> 00:10:31.439 And he said to him, you son of a perverse and rebellious woman, do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of your mother's nakedness? 00:10:31.500 --> 00:10:36.559 For as long as the son of Jesse lives on this earth, neither you nor your kingdom shall be established. 00:10:37.039 --> 00:10:40.000 Therefore, send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die. 00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:47.679 We see here the darkness of Saul's heart. 00:10:48.919 --> 00:10:50.460 His murderous rage. 00:10:51.159 --> 00:10:52.740 Not just at David, but at Jonathan. 00:10:53.600 --> 00:10:54.879 For defending David. 00:10:54.879 --> 00:10:57.620 We see his blame shifting. 00:10:59.320 --> 00:11:00.820 His jealousy and envy. 00:11:02.240 --> 00:11:10.519 And his desperate, fearful desire to cling on to all the power that he has, even if it means killing one of his most loyal and faithful servants. 00:11:15.960 --> 00:11:20.299 But you know, even more than that, we see what's at stake for Jonathan in being loyal to David. 00:11:22.639 --> 00:11:24.340 And the answer is absolutely everything. 00:11:24.879 --> 00:11:27.279 Jonathan's future career. 00:11:28.600 --> 00:11:30.240 The approval of his parents. 00:11:31.000 --> 00:11:32.460 His inherited identity. 00:11:32.600 --> 00:11:33.659 His very own life. 00:11:33.820 --> 00:11:34.860 Everything's at stake. 00:11:37.220 --> 00:11:42.860 And yet Jonathan is unhesitating and unwavering in his loyalty to David. 00:11:44.799 --> 00:11:49.919 At the beginning of chapter 19, Saul was angry at David. 00:11:51.159 --> 00:11:53.159 Jonathan tried to step in the middle as a mediator. 00:11:53.159 --> 00:12:01.199 He sort of got Saul to calm down and got them to be happy and agree together. 00:12:02.719 --> 00:12:04.179 Saul agreed not to harm him. 00:12:05.179 --> 00:12:07.799 But you know, there wasn't any possibility for him to do that anymore. 00:12:07.799 --> 00:12:10.159 He had to choose. 00:12:10.579 --> 00:12:11.959 One side or the other. 00:12:12.019 --> 00:12:18.359 He had to choose to be loyal to Saul and kill and basically abandon David to be killed. 00:12:19.479 --> 00:12:22.779 Or to be loyal to David at the risk of his own life. 00:12:22.779 --> 00:12:30.959 And Jonathan completely identified himself with David. 00:12:32.959 --> 00:12:35.659 Jonathan said to Saul, but why should he be put to death? 00:12:35.779 --> 00:12:36.559 What has he done? 00:12:36.559 --> 00:12:41.059 Jonathan stands up for righteousness. 00:12:43.479 --> 00:12:46.879 Instead of holding on to his own self-interest. 00:12:46.879 --> 00:12:51.439 Even when everything was on the line, he didn't back down. 00:12:51.539 --> 00:12:54.620 And so Saul began to treat Jonathan the same way that he had treated David. 00:12:54.720 --> 00:12:58.939 He throws a spear at him to strike him and kill him. 00:12:59.139 --> 00:13:00.360 Just as he did to David. 00:13:01.419 --> 00:13:06.559 Basically all the anger and rage that was directed against David was now directed against Jonathan as well. 00:13:07.039 --> 00:13:08.539 And Jonathan left the king's table. 00:13:08.539 --> 00:13:15.259 He could no longer have a safe place in his own home. 00:13:18.740 --> 00:13:26.000 Now what do we take away from this story of Jonathan's sacrificial loyalty to David? 00:13:28.719 --> 00:13:36.379 First, I think Jonathan and David's relationship is a model for our human relationships. 00:13:36.379 --> 00:13:43.059 Human beings, we were meant to flourish in relationships like Jonathan and David. 00:13:43.179 --> 00:13:49.100 Relationships characterized by loyalty and steadfast love. 00:13:52.100 --> 00:13:55.460 You know, we live in a commercial world. 00:13:56.100 --> 00:13:56.519 Right? 00:13:56.539 --> 00:14:00.259 A consumer world where you pay for everything. 00:14:01.080 --> 00:14:01.340 Right? 00:14:01.340 --> 00:14:05.039 We have all these sort of short-term contractual arrangements. 00:14:06.379 --> 00:14:11.580 Where we enter into relationships with one another as long as it benefits us. 00:14:14.299 --> 00:14:16.480 Sometimes that's even how people approach friendships. 00:14:17.039 --> 00:14:18.399 Or dating relationships. 00:14:19.720 --> 00:14:23.039 I'll enter into this relationship as long as it seems to be benefiting me. 00:14:24.279 --> 00:14:25.600 And then I'll move on. Many a man proclaims his own steadfast love, 00:14:40.400 --> 00:14:42.480 but a faithful man who can find. 00:14:44.360 --> 00:14:47.300 Let me ask you, is there someone like Jonathan in your life?
