00:00:19.300 whether that might seem a little bit hollow. 00:00:20.320 --> 00:00:23.900 There's a lot of places where there's not much joy. 00:00:24.719 --> 00:00:30.539 The BBC on their website today had a news story which had the headline, 00:00:30.919 --> 00:00:36.039 Bethlehem is empty of joy, no Santa, no celebration. 00:00:37.339 --> 00:00:41.459 And if you read a bit into the article, it talks about how there's no Christmas tree this year, 00:00:41.759 --> 00:00:46.640 there are no carols, there is no celebration of Jesus' birth. 00:00:46.739 --> 00:00:50.079 Because Bethlehem these days is part of the West Bank, 00:00:50.079 --> 00:00:57.420 which is an occupied territory in Israel and is largely a Palestinian people. 00:00:58.079 --> 00:01:02.239 And even those who are Christians find it difficult to celebrate Christmas this year 00:01:02.239 --> 00:01:05.819 because a lot of them have relatives in Gaza. 00:01:06.579 --> 00:01:08.500 Little joy in Bethlehem. 00:01:08.560 --> 00:01:12.759 Little joy too, I suspect, in Jerusalem, certainly not in Gaza, 00:01:12.760 --> 00:01:17.939 or in Kiev or Kharkiv or Sudan or in Yemen 00:01:17.939 --> 00:01:21.359 or in the other places around the world where there is conflict. 00:01:21.880 --> 00:01:26.300 Perhaps some of them we hardly read about or are aware of. 00:01:27.300 --> 00:01:32.000 Come to our own country and there are a lot of people who perhaps don't have much joy. 00:01:32.820 --> 00:01:36.060 Many of us are privileged and we will enjoy Christmas tomorrow. 00:01:36.180 --> 00:01:38.640 We will enjoy the giving and receiving of presents. 00:01:38.640 --> 00:01:42.079 We will enjoy good food and time together. 00:01:42.760 --> 00:01:47.079 But there are an awful lot of people in our Christmas goodies and some toys for children, 00:01:56.019 --> 00:02:00.519 for those who had children, and to give them something for Christmas. 00:02:01.140 --> 00:02:04.939 But there are an awful lot of people for whom Christmas is a really difficult time 00:02:04.939 --> 00:02:10.139 and they perhaps are more aware than ever of how little they have. 00:02:11.139 --> 00:02:14.020 Next year in this country there's going to be a general election campaign. 00:02:14.800 --> 00:02:19.620 I'm fairly sure that none of the parties will be offering us joy in that. 00:02:19.719 --> 00:02:25.180 The message will be you won't be as bad under us as you would be under the other lot. 00:02:26.180 --> 00:02:30.740 Perhaps for some of us too, Christmas is going to be a difficult time. 00:02:30.740 --> --> 00:03:25.560 And we find that joy when we go back to the first Christmas and to Bethlehem. 00:03:25.560 --> 00:03:30.300 Bethlehem, which then, as now, was an occupied territory. 00:03:30.900 --> 00:04:07.899 after the birth of the Lord Jesus, there are two references to joy. 00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:09.319 And it's not just any joy. 00:04:09.620 --> 00:04:12.280 There's a really strong emphasis in both of them, 00:04:12.620 --> 00:04:17.959 of the intensity of the greatness of that joy. 00:04:17.959 --> 00:04:23.899 So we see it first in the story of the shepherds around Bethlehem. he comes to tell them about something really exciting 00:04:47.939 --> 00:04:52.939 that's just happened not very far from where they are. 00:04:53.020 --> 00:04:55.460 The birth of the Lord Jesus. 00:04:56.840 --> 00:04:59.800 As we read on what the angel has to say, 00:05:00.340 --> 00:05:03.420 I think there are two reasons he gives us 00:05:03.420 --> 00:05:07.520 why there should be great joy among all people, 00:05:07.639 --> 00:05:09.520 among all nations. 00:05:09.519 --> 00:05:13.740 First of all, there's the joy of incarnation. 00:05:14.779 --> 00:05:16.599 A baby is born. with parents 00:05:27.459 --> 00:05:31.319 as they've had new life come into the world 00:05:31.319 --> 00:05:33.379 and into their families. 00:05:34.139 --> 00:05:36.479 It's wonderful as a church to be able to see 00:05:36.480 --> 00:05:39.879 the young children and the babies who are with us 00:05:39.879 --> 00:05:45.060 and to share something of the joy of their parents. 00:05:46.360 --> 00:05:49.160 How much more then should we rejoice, 00:05:49.280 --> 00:05:54.000 should we have joy over the baby that was born in Bethlehem? 00:05:54.580 --> 00:05:57.800 Because this was no ordinary baby. 00:05:57.800 --> 00:06:05.139 We've been reading this evening some of the things that happened before Jesus was born. 00:06:06.079 --> 00:06:12.780 700 years before, the prophet Micah prophesied that he will be born in Bethlehem. 00:06:13.439 --> 00:06:15.500 This was not something that just happened. 00:06:15.500 --> 00:06:20.279 This was something that had been foretold many years before. 00:06:21.259 --> 00:06:26.639 The angel comes to Joseph and explains the reason why Mary is pregnant 00:06:26.639 --> 00:06:31.360 and that the person who is to be born, the baby who is to be born, 00:06:31.759 --> 00:06:35.560 is to be the son of God with us. 00:06:35.560 --> 00:06:40.819 The incarnation is one of the most remarkable things, 00:06:41.100 --> 00:06:45.379 perhaps the most remarkable thing that has happened in history. 00:06:46.160 --> 00:06:51.139 We got a bit of a flavor of that from the reading in John, didn't we? 00:06:51.899 --> 00:06:53.819 No one has seen God. 00:06:54.680 --> 00:06:56.459 God is invisible. 00:06:56.680 --> 00:06:57.459 God is a spirit. 00:06:57.600 --> 00:07:00.100 We can't see God in our world. 00:07:00.199 --> 00:07:02.040 We can see the work that God has done, 00:07:02.040 --> 00:07:04.840 but we can't see God. 00:07:05.560 --> 00:07:10.560 And yet God came into our world through his son in human form, 00:07:11.620 --> 00:07:15.720 living among us as a normal human, 00:07:16.579 --> 00:07:19.540 miraculously conceived but born naturally, 00:07:20.240 --> 00:07:23.379 and living a life where he needed food and drink and sleep 00:07:23.379 --> 00:07:26.540 and everything else that we need. 00:07:27.259 --> 00:07:31.100 And he came to show us what God is like. 00:07:31.259 --> 00:07:34.379 He came to show us God's glory. 00:07:34.379 --> 00:07:37.000 And how marvelous it is, 00:07:37.339 --> 00:07:40.000 how much joy we should feel, 00:07:40.740 --> 00:07:44.199 that the God of heaven cared enough for us 00:07:44.199 except that he was sinless. 00:07:58.759 --> 00:08:03.839 And the joy of incarnation is one of the things 00:08:03.839 --> 00:08:07.879 that should really thrill us as we think about Christmas. more than that to the shepherds, doesn't he? 00:08:23.219 --> 00:08:26.459 He says he's born a baby in Bethlehem, 00:08:26.899 --> 00:08:29.279 and he says he is a saviour. 00:08:29.939 --> 00:08:32.480 He is Christ the Lord. 00:08:33.360 --> 00:08:35.000 And the joy we can have at Christmas 00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:37.220 is not just the joy of incarnation, 00:08:37.779 --> 00:08:39.819 it's the joy of salvation. 00:08:40.559 --> 00:08:42.480 A saviour has come. 00:08:42.480 --> 00:08:44.600 As I said earlier, 00:08:44.940 --> 00:08:47.120 the Jews were looking for a saviour. 00:08:47.700 --> 00:08:50.200 They'd look for many years for a messiah 00:08:50.200 --> 00:08:51.860 who had been prophesied. 00:08:52.720 --> 00:08:54.360 But they were looking for a saviour 00:08:54.360 --> 00:08:57.159 who would free them from the Roman authorities. 00:08:58.100 --> 00:08:59.659 They were looking for someone 00:08:59.659 --> 00:09:01.500 who could liberate them, 00:09:01.899 --> 00:09:03.360 who could save them 00:09:03.360 --> 00:09:07.740 from the burden that they experience 00:09:07.740 --> 00:09:11.600 through being occupied by a foreign power. 00:09:11.600 --> 00:09:15.060 But that wasn't the saviour who was born. 00:09:15.720 --> 00:09:20.159 That wasn't the purpose of Jesus coming into the world. 00:09:21.639 --> 00:09:24.040 The son of God took on human flesh 00:09:24.040 --> 00:09:29.840 not to be a great ruler of his people at that time. 00:09:30.960 --> 00:09:34.420 Not just to show us what God is like 00:09:34.420 --> 00:09:40.420 and to demonstrate the power and the wisdom of our God. 00:09:40.419 --> 00:09:44.120 The son of God came into the world 00:09:44.120 --> 00:09:47.719 to be the saviour of the world. 00:09:48.500 --> 00:09:49.959 The angel said to Joseph, 00:09:50.099 --> 00:09:51.699 we saw it in our reading earlier, 00:09:52.219 --> 00:09:54.519 that his name would be Jesus. 00:09:55.399 --> 00:09:59.479 God saves because he would save his people 00:09:59.479 --> 00:10:01.839 from their sins. 00:10:01.840 --> 00:10:07.160 And so we celebrate salvation at Christmas. 00:10:07.960 --> 00:10:12.780 We celebrate the fact that it's not just a baby born in Bethlehem. 00:10:13.780 --> 00:10:15.720 And that part of the story, 00:10:15.899 --> 00:10:19.780 the end result of the story that would recognize 00:10:37.480 --> 00:10:39.579 that the punishment has been taken 00:10:39.579 --> 00:10:42.839 for those who trust in the Lord Jesus. 00:10:42.840 --> 00:10:46.879 There's a remarkable verse in the book of Hebrews. 00:10:46.980 --> 00:10:48.120 Hebrews chapter 12, 00:10:48.200 --> 00:10:49.580 it says this of Jesus, 00:10:50.379 --> 00:10:52.780 for the joy set before him, 00:10:53.320 --> 00:10:54.940 he endured the cross, 00:10:55.639 --> 00:10:56.780 scorning its shame, 00:10:57.580 --> 00:11:01.300 and sat down at the right hand of God. 00:11:01.879 --> 00:11:05.740 For the joy that was set before him. 00:11:06.240 --> 00:11:07.220 What was that joy? 00:11:07.220 --> 00:11:09.139 Well, to some extent, 00:11:09.259 --> 00:11:10.840 I think the passage implies 00:11:10.840 --> 00:11:13.220 that the joy was in the reward 00:11:13.220 --> 00:11:15.800 that he would receive afterwards. 00:11:16.519 --> 00:11:19.180 That he would sit down at the right hand of
