As we continue our series in this Old Testament book of Chronicles this summer, we're in chapter 33. 00:00:19.660 --> 00:00:30.800 So as we turn there, I wonder, if you were to sum up the Christian life in one word, which word would you choose? 00:00:32.320 --> 00:00:38.740 Well, on the one hand, you would be correct if you chose the word Christ, right? Jesus Himself. 00:00:39.460 --> 00:00:45.240 Christianity is all about the person and work of the Lord Jesus. --> 00:01:16.239 Well, you know, it's interesting that Martin Luther, when he wrote his 95 Theses, he wrote this. 00:01:16.239 --> 00:01:20.219 He said, this is his first of his 95 Theses. 00:01:21.179 --> 00:01:30.500 He says, when our Lord and Master Jesus Christ said, repent, he willed that the whole life of believers should be repentance. 00:01:30.500 --> 00:01:30.900 Repentance. 00:01:32.099 --> 00:01:38.120 Now, there's a word that sums up the Christian life, at least according to Luther and to many saints before him. 00:01:39.560 --> 00:01:40.040 Repentance. 00:01:41.920 --> 00:01:49.200 Now, I imagine you could attend many religious gatherings, many church services even, and never even hear the word repentance. 00:01:49.200 --> 00:01:58.400 You know, we can shy away from language of repentance because the word sort of sounds stuffy and grim and loaded with false guilt and empty religion. 00:02:00.079 --> 00:02:02.700 And I think that's a real shame, and it's a loss. 00:02:04.140 --> 00:02:10.420 Because the biblical concept of repentance is just brimming with hope. 00:02:10.419 --> 00:02:19.599 If we really understood repentance, we'd see that it's like a prison sentence being lifted. 00:02:20.819 --> 00:02:25.819 It's like windows being opened and the fresh breeze filling the room. 00:02:27.339 --> 00:02:28.659 It's like a new chapter. 00:02:28.839 --> 00:02:29.779 It's like a fresh start. 00:02:29.780 --> 00:02:37.000 So I wonder, friends, are you in need of a new chapter today, a fresh start? 00:02:38.639 --> 00:02:44.020 And perhaps we need 00:02:53.920 Well, that's what our text today is all about. 00:02:54.539 --> 00:02:58.680 It's a window into this rich biblical reality of repentance. 00:02:58.680 --> 00:03:03.879 Second Chronicles chapter 33 is the story of Manasseh. 00:03:04.680 --> 00:03:10.980 And as we'll see, Manasseh is notorious in the story of the Old Testament and not in a good way. 00:03:12.300 --> 00:03:15.040 So as we turn to this chapter, let's pray and then we'll dive in. 00:03:15.080 --> 00:03:15.800 Would you pray with me? 00:03:16.840 --> 00:03:21.939 Father, help us to understand what it is your Spirit is Chronicles 33 is our need for repentance, the need for repentance. 00:03:50.200 --> 00:03:52.460 Let me read verses 1 through 11. 00:03:52.980 --> 00:03:54.080 We'll set things up. 00:03:54.080 --> 00:03:58.320 Manasseh was 12 years old when he began to reign and he reigned 55 years in Jerusalem. 00:03:59.120 --> 00:04:06.939 And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, according to the abominations of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel. 00:04:07.640 --> 00:04:12.220 For he rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah had broken down. 00:04:12.600 --> 00:04:19.220 And he erected altars to the Baals and made Ashteroth and worshipped all the hosts of heaven and served them. 00:04:19.220 --> 00:04:23.280 And he built altars in the house of the Lord, of which the Lord had said, 00:04:23.400 --> 00:04:25.560 In Jerusalem shall my name be forever. 00:04:26.320 --> 00:04:30.760 And he built altars for all the hosts of heaven in the two courts of the house of the Lord. 00:04:31.420 --> 00:04:35.340 And he burned his sons as an offering in the valley of the son of Hinnom, 00:04:35.920 --> 00:04:42.700 and used fortune-telling and omens and sorcery and dealt with mediums and with necromancers. 00:04:42.699 --> 00:04:48.860 He did much evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger. 00:04:50.599 --> 00:04:54.819 And the carved image of the I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, 00:05:02.039 --> 00:05:07.319 I will put my name forever, and I will no more remove the foot of Israel from the land that I appointed for your fathers, 00:05:07.319 --> 00:05:11.800 if only they will be careful to do all that I have commanded them, 00:05:11.839 --> 00:05:14.480 all the law, the statutes, and the rules given through Moses. 00:05:15.719 --> 00:05:20.259 Manasseh led Judah and the inhabitants of Israel, of Jerusalem, astray, 00:05:20.980 --> 00:05:25.219 to do more evil than the nations whom the Lord destroyed before the people of Israel. 00:05:26.259 --> 00:05:29.899 The Lord spoke to Manasseh and to his people, but they paid no attention. 00:05:29.899 --> 00:05:35.739 Therefore the Lord brought upon them the commanders of the army of the king of Assyria, 00:05:36.139 --> 00:05:42.519 who captured Manasseh with hooks and bound him with chains of bronze and brought him to Babylon. 00:05:45.439 --> 00:05:47.759 Well, as you might have guessed from these verses, 00:05:48.239 --> 00:05:52.859 Manasseh is remembered as one of the worst kings in the history of Israel. 00:05:54.319 --> 00:05:56.919 He has one of the longest reigns, 55 years, 00:05:56.920 --> 00:06:02.800 and for most of that long reign, he undoes nearly all of the good that his father Hezekiah had done. 00:06:04.439 --> 00:06:09.780 And now when we look at a figure like Manasseh, it's easy to think, right, that we are so not like him. 00:06:10.660 --> 00:06:16.200 We read about his evil and his idolatry, and we can think that we're doing pretty good in comparison, right? 00:06:17.200 --> 00:06:21.240 But you know, rather than comparing our outward deeds to Manasseh's outward deeds, 00:06:21.420 --> 00:06:23.420 let's press a little deeper into the heart. 00:06:23.420 --> 00:06:29.500 And when we do that, I think we see two heart dynamics in Manasseh that are actually true of everyone. 00:06:30.400 --> 00:06:36.180 And so through Manasseh, we see why you and I and all of us have a deep need for this thing we call repentance. 00:06:37.280 --> 00:06:39.400 And that first heart dynamic is this. 00:06:39.780 --> 00:06:43.400 It's that our idolatry leads to the Lord's anger. 00:06:44.720 --> 00:06:45.759 The end of verse 6 says, 00:06:45.759 --> 00:06:50.339 Manasseh did much evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger. 00:06:50.439 --> 00:06:52.120 That is, provoking the Lord to anger. 00:06:53.500 --> 00:06:57.360 Manasseh, you see, chose to worship things that were not the one true God. 00:06:57.599 --> 00:07:02.420 He chose created things, gods of human invention, and worshipped them instead. 00:07:03.740 --> 00:07:08.740 And now on the surface, it's easy to think that we're not so silly, right, as to worship statues, literally idols anymore. 00:07:08.740 --> 00:07:14.160 But the reality is today, we still worship created things rather than our Creator. 00:07:14.900 --> 00:07:18.280 We take finite things and make them ultimate things in our lives. 00:07:20.920 --> 00:07:24.199 Here's maybe a diagnostic question for you and for me. 00:07:25.740 --> 00:07:33.920 Is there something in your life other than God that if you lost it, you wouldn't be just sad or heartbroken, but you'd be devastated? 00:07:33.920 --> 00:07:37.100 You wouldn't be able to get out of bed in the morning. 00:07:38.840 --> 00:07:41.020 Or maybe a slightly different way of asking that question. 00:07:41.120 --> 00:07:52.420 Is there something that so shapes your identity, your sense of self, that if you lost it or if it was threatened, you'd be completely disoriented, completely wrecked? 00:07:54.160 --> 00:07:57.580 What's the thing that kind of props you up as you? 00:08:00.060 --> 00:08:00.920 Maybe it's your profession. 00:08:00.920 --> 00:08:07.199 You know, you've worked a lot of years to get where you are, and now you kind of can't imagine yourself without it. 00:08:08.400 --> 00:08:09.759 Or maybe it's a relationship. 00:08:10.300 --> 00:08:15.480 Or maybe it's just the approval of others, your family, your children, your co-workers, your peers. 00:08:16.600 --> 00:08:19.580 Maybe it's even your sense of being a good person. 00:08:19.740 --> 00:08:23.500 You've labored long in your life to be a person of character, of moral worth. 00:08:23.500 --> 00:08:28.339 And that is the thing that sort of establishes your sense of self. 00:08:28.339 --> 00:08:39.240 Whatever your identity is, whatever it is, that if you lost it, you'd lose yourself, that's your God. 00:08:41.159 --> 00:08:48.159 You know, in these modern-day idols of our hearts, they not only kind of shape our identity, they also dictate our actions. 00:08:48.159 --> 00:08:57.179 You know, much like previous kings that we've seen in the book of 2 Chronicles, Manasseh probably didn't wake up one morning and say, 00:08:57.279 --> 00:09:00.139 you know, I think I'm going to do all the things that are listed in verse 6. 00:09:01.219 --> 00:09:02.240 What am I going to do today? 00:09:02.299 --> 00:09:04.579 I think I'll sacrifice my children to the Baals. 00:09:05.539 --> 00:09:09.659 I think I'll go out and perform some sorcery and start engaging in necromancy. 00:09:09.659 --> 00:09:15.039 You know, that's not where it starts, but that's where it leads. 00:09:17.939 --> 00:09:20.959 Most of us start by saying, I want to work hard and get ahead. 00:09:21.059 --> 00:09:23.339 I want to do what it takes to be successful in my career. 00:09:23.480 --> 00:09:24.339 I want to make a difference. 00:09:24.439 --> 00:09:25.500 I want to make my mark. 00:09:26.079 --> 00:09:31.559 But when the career or the relationship at last becomes Lord in our life, when it becomes our identity, 00:09:31.879 --> 00:09:35.939 then we find that we're doing all sorts of things to serve it and to uphold it. 00:09:35.940 --> 00:09:42.640 Then we find that we're doing all sorts of things to serve it and to uphold it that we would never have dreamed doing before. 00:09:44.800 --> 00:09:53.200 We start out thinking that, you know, well, maybe I'd have to fudge these reports. 00:09:53.640 --> 00:09:56.000 You know, that's not where we started, but that's where we end up. 00:09:56.640 --> 00:10:00.760 You don't start out thinking, oh, I'm going to compromise on all of my boundaries and personal integrity. 00:10:00.759 --> 00:10:06.700 But three, four, five years in, we find we're doing things we wouldn't have considered possible. 00:10:10.139 --> 00:10:17.759 And, you know, not only does that place we end up in, not only does that wound our souls very deeply, 00:10:19.439 --> 00:10:21.779 it also alienates us from God. 00:10:21.779 --> 00:10:30.899 By turning away from the true God to idols, the Bible is very clear that we put ourselves at enmity with God. 00:10:31.959 --> 00:10:36.980 We place ourselves under what the Bible calls God's anger or God's wrath. 00:10:38.459 --> 00:10:44.240 Again, verse 6 says that the Lord was provoked to anger at Manasseh. 00:10:45.819 --> 00:10:49.799 Now, remember, God's anger is not like human anger. 00:10:49.799 --> 00:10:51.979 Human anger is what? 00:10:52.099 --> 00:10:55.879 It's uncontrolled, it's fickle, it's self-centered, it's destructive. 00:10:56.139 --> 00:10:58.120 Human anger rarely does anything good. 00:10:59.439 --> 00:11:04.099 But God's wrath, God's anger is nothing like that. 00:11:06.099 --> 00:11:13.759 God's anger is His perfectly just, perfectly controlled opposition 00:11:13.759 --> 00:11:20.059 to all that dishonors Him and all that defaces the good world that He's made. 00:11:22.179 --> 00:11:27.179 God's anger, God's wrath is God's perfect no to evil and wrong. 00:11:30.899 --> 00:11:36.759 You see, the great tragedy of idolatry, it's not just the kind of horizontal consequences it creates 00:11:36.759 --> 00:11:43.059 between us and the things around us, but it's the vertical enmity it creates between us and God. 00:11:44.120 --> 00:11:49.279 In other words, idolatry doesn't just put us out of joint with creation much more tragically and much more seriously, 00:11:49.500 --> 00:11:51.679 it puts us at a joint with our Creator. 00:11:51.679 --> 00:12:00.059 And that's the first heart dynamic we see in Manasseh is that idolatry leads to this enmity with God. 00:12:00.139 --> 00:12:01.319 It leads to God's anger. 00:12:01.979 --> 00:12:07.399 The second dynamic that we see, we see in verses 10 and verse 11. 00:12:08.739 --> 00:12:13.079 And it's this, it's that there's a refusal to heed God's warnings, 00:12:13.539 --> 00:12:16.559 which leads to God giving us over to our sin. 00:12:16.559 --> 00:12:18.359 Verse 10 reads, 00:12:18.959 --> 00:12:23.719 The Lord spoke to Manasseh and to His people, but they paid no attention. 00:12:25.299 --> 00:12:31.539 God, in His great kindness towards Manasseh as He's performing all this evil and leading the people astray, 00:12:31.619 --> 00:12:34.879 God, in His great kindness, calls out to them through the prophets, 00:12:36.359 --> 00:12:40.119 warns them that they're rushing headlong towards a cliff's edge, 00:12:41.119 --> 00:12:43.079 but they turn a deaf ear. 00:12:43.939 --> 00:12:45.039 They ignored God. 00:12:46.559 --> 00:12:51.439 And then after that patient calling and beckoning and entreating, 00:12:51.579 --> 00:12:54.439 after the many years of God pursuing them, 00:12:55.339 --> 00:13:02.879 at last God, in His justice, gives them over to the very gods that they had chosen to worship. 00:13:03.959 --> 00:13:05.319 And that's what we see in verse 11. 00:13:06.399 --> 00:13:10.719 Manasseh and the people, they took to themselves the gods of the nations, 00:13:10.719 --> 00:13:14.119 and so God gives them over to those very nations. 00:13:14.120 --> 00:13:22.220 Manasseh is defeated by the Assyrians and taken away as a captive to one of the Assyrian outposts in the city of Babylon, 00:13:22.460 --> 00:13:25.500 which at this point in history, the kingdom of Assyria controlled. 00:13:27.659 --> 00:13:32.440 You know, perhaps one of the most terrifying things that could happen to us as human beings 00:13:32.440 --> 00:13:40.580 is for God to give us exactly what we want when what we want is something apart from Him. 00:13:44.460 --> 00:13:47.900 It led Manasseh to total slavery. 00:13:47.899 --> 00:13:52.980 He thought he was choosing to worship the gods of the nations, 00:13:53.059 --> 00:13:54.759 and for a while it worked, or so he thought, 00:13:55.000 --> 00:13:57.039 but after refusing God's gracious warnings, 00:13:57.340 --> 00:13:59.100 God eventually gave him over to those gods, 00:13:59.220 --> 00:14:00.959 and now he had no choice. 00:14:02.360 --> 00:14:04.319 Now he was captive to them. 00:14:04.320 --> 00:14:12.460 So why do we need repentance? 00:14:15.340 --> 00:14:20.440 We need repentance because the fallen human heart is at enmity with God. 00:14:21.379 --> 00:14:23.080 We worship idols of our own choosing, 00:14:23.200 --> 00:14:26.980 and this not only puts us on a direct path to spiritual slavery and self-destruction, 00:14:26.980 --> 00:14:30.620 it also puts us under God's just and eternal no, 00:14:31.740 --> 00:14:36.060 which is a darkness of separation from God Himself, 00:14:36.820 --> 00:14:40.500 who is the only source of lasting joy. 00:14:44.659 --> 00:14:46.000 So is there hope for us? 00:14:48.259 --> 00:14:49.899 You know, you can live for a long time, 00:14:50.360 --> 00:14:54.039 and you can kind of believe in your head and say things like, 00:14:54.320 --> 00:14:56.659 ah, I'm not perfect, I'm not a good person, 00:14:56.980 --> 00:15:00.779 and you know, what we mean by that a lot of the times is, 00:15:01.240 --> 00:15:02.899 ah, I'm just like everybody else, right? 00:15:02.980 --> 00:15:03.659 Nobody's perfect. 00:15:05.480 --> 00:15:07.820 But you know, we can say things like that 00:15:07.820 --> 00:15:11.420 without ever realizing yet 00:15:11.420 --> 00:15:14.560 the real gravity of our sin, 00:15:15.420 --> 00:15:18.039 the real gravity of our spiritual condition. 00:15:21.519 --> 00:15:25.700 But what happens when the curtain is drawn back 00:15:25.700 --> 00:15:29.460 and you see yourself for the first time really, 00:15:29.960 --> 00:15:34.620 you know, when the lights in the basement of your heart are flipped on 00:15:34.620 --> 00:15:36.960 and you kind of see all that's been harboring there 00:15:36.960 --> 00:15:38.280 and scuttling around in there, 00:15:38.340 --> 00:15:41.280 when you see the depth of your sin and selfishness, 00:15:41.360 --> 00:15:41.879 what then? 00:15:44.840 --> 00:15:47.420 What then when you realize that you've completely blown it 00:15:47.420 --> 00:15:51.000 and that in the face of God's holiness and justice, 00:15:51.000 --> 00:15:53.240 you simply don't stand a chance? 00:15:55.259 --> 00:15:57.559 When you come to yourself one day and realize 00:15:57.559 --> 00:16:00.460 that you've actually gotten everything you wanted, 00:16:00.799 --> 00:16:02.899 but you're actually not free, 00:16:03.340 --> 00:16:04.200 you're empty, 00:16:04.600 --> 00:16:05.720 and you're enslaved. 00:16:05.720 --> 00:16:09.500 Is there any hope for us then? 00:16:12.759 --> 00:16:15.120 And this is where 2 Chronicles chapter 33 00:16:15.120 --> 00:16:18.120 becomes a chapter of great hope for us. 00:16:19.980 --> 00:16:23.620 For those of us who know how dark our hearts can really be, 00:16:24.620 --> 00:16:26.460 because at this moment, 00:16:27.560 --> 00:16:29.360 repentance becomes the window 00:16:29.360 --> 00:16:31.420 that opens up to the sun. 00:16:31.419 --> 00:16:35.519 Repentance presents itself as the fresh start 00:16:35.519 --> 00:16:36.799 in the new chapter. 00:16:38.639 --> 00:16:40.299 So we've seen in our chapter 00:16:40.299 --> 00:16:42.219 the need for repentance. 00:16:42.579 --> 00:16:43.860 We now come to the second point, 00:16:44.179 --> 00:16:45.659 which is the nature of repentance. 00:16:46.319 --> 00:16:47.459 The nature of repentance. 00:16:47.620 --> 00:16:49.000 Let's read just the next two verses, 00:16:49.139 --> 00:16:50.360 verses 12 and 13. 00:16:51.599 --> 00:16:52.439 Verse 12, 00:16:52.440 --> 00:17:18.440 Then Manasseh knew 00:17:18.440 --> 00:17:21.460 that the Lord was God. 00:17:21.460 --> 00:17:26.120 What exactly is repentance? 00:17:27.579 --> 00:17:28.900 Well, according to verse 12, 00:17:29.660 --> 00:17:30.980 it has two aspects. 00:17:31.100 --> 00:17:31.720 On the one hand, 00:17:31.799 --> 00:17:32.319 the text says, 00:17:32.400 --> 00:17:34.819 Manasseh humbled himself greatly 00:17:34.819 --> 00:17:36.920 before the God of his fathers. 00:17:37.720 --> 00:17:37.980 You see, 00:17:38.039 --> 00:17:39.180 Manasseh came to admit 00:17:39.180 --> 00:17:40.920 that he had made a ruin of things, 00:17:41.680 --> 00:17:43.400 and he let go 00:17:43.400 --> 00:17:45.079 of his self-justification 00:17:45.079 --> 00:17:46.240 and his excuses. 00:17:47.140 --> 00:17:48.660 He let go of all the ways 00:17:48.660 --> 00:17:49.860 he might have tried to minimize 00:17:49.859 --> 00:17:50.839 what he had done. 00:17:51.839 --> 00:17:53.779 He confessed that he was guilty 00:17:53.779 --> 00:17:56.439 and deserved nothing from God. 00:17:58.019 --> 00:18:00.000 He humbled himself greatly 00:18:00.000 --> 00:18:02.139 before the God of his fathers. 00:18:03.299 --> 00:18:04.099 And then secondly, 00:18:04.240 --> 00:18:04.599 it says, 00:18:04.699 --> 00:18:05.879 He entreated the favor 00:18:05.879 --> 00:18:07.000 of the Lord his God. 00:18:08.359 --> 00:18:08.799 You know, 00:18:08.819 --> 00:18:09.719 it's one thing to admit 00:18:09.719 --> 00:18:10.479 that you've blown it. 00:18:10.519 --> 00:18:11.399 It's another thing 00:18:11.399 --> 00:18:12.599 to cry out for help. 00:18:13.879 --> 00:18:15.319 Simply wallowing in the mess 00:18:15.319 --> 00:18:16.119 of our own making, 00:18:16.119 --> 00:18:17.259 that can be just another form 00:18:17.259 --> 00:18:18.139 of self-centeredness, 00:18:18.219 --> 00:18:18.639 can't it? 00:18:19.919 --> 00:18:21.439 But calling out to another, 00:18:21.599 --> 00:18:22.619 calling out to God 00:18:22.619 --> 00:18:23.539 for rescue, 00:18:24.579 --> 00:18:27.319 that's what genuine repentance is. 00:18:27.939 --> 00:18:30.419 It's turning from ourselves 00:18:30.419 --> 00:18:31.099 to God. 00:18:32.179 --> 00:18:33.639 That's the nature of repentance. 00:18:35.000 --> 00:18:36.159 And there are plenty of prayers 00:18:36.159 --> 00:18:37.459 in Scripture that show us 00:18:37.459 --> 00:18:38.459 what this looks like. 00:18:39.679 --> 00:18:40.619 Psalm 51 being 00:18:40.619 --> 00:18:42.279 one of the most well-known. 00:18:43.359 --> 00:18:44.099 In Psalm 51, 00:18:44.099 --> 00:18:44.740 David prays, 00:18:44.779 --> 00:18:46.059 Have mercy on me, O God, 00:18:46.119 --> 00:18:47.719 according to your steadfast love. 00:18:48.719 --> 00:18:50.379 According to your abundant mercy, 00:18:50.579 --> 00:18:52.079 blot out my transgressions. 00:18:53.039 --> 00:18:54.019 Wash me thoroughly 00:18:54.019 --> 00:18:54.899 from my iniquity 00:18:54.899
