00:06:45.979 A thousand years later, an Augustinian monk was teaching the book of Romans to his students. 00:06:45.980 --> 00:06:49.700 And struggled with the expression found in verse 17, if you have read much of your Bible, 00:09:23.039 --> 00:09:25.820 that Paul used to be called Saul. 00:09:27.100 --> 00:09:29.720 And it's always an assumption that Paul's name was changed. 00:09:29.820 --> 00:09:31.779 That somewhere along the way, after his conversion, 00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:34.019 that God gave him a new name, 00:09:34.080 --> 00:09:37.139 much as he had given Abram the name Abraham. 00:09:37.759 --> 00:09:39.399 Do you know that's not actually the case? 00:09:39.399 --> 00:09:43.039 You know that Saul was Paul's Jewish name, 00:09:43.899 --> 00:09:46.799 but that he was also given the Greek name Paul. 00:09:47.500 --> 00:09:51.379 He was named Saul after the king of Israel, Saul. 00:09:51.659 --> 00:09:53.519 So he could be accepted in those circles. 00:09:53.519 --> 00:09:57.360 And he was given the name Paul to be accepted amongst the Gentiles. 00:09:57.559 --> 00:10:02.240 So we see his name transition in Scripture to Paul because of his mission to the Gentiles. 00:10:02.240 --> 00:10:06.159 He began to go by that name to be able to hang out with them. 00:10:06.480 --> 00:10:08.259 I thought that was rather fascinating. 00:10:08.259 --> 00:10:10.220 So I'm just going to use the word Paul. 00:10:10.360 --> 00:10:13.100 Now, just don't be hating me because of that. 00:10:13.700 --> 00:10:18.819 Paul was born to a Roman father and a Jewish mother in the city of Tarsus. 00:10:19.519 --> 00:10:22.519 Tarsus was located on the northeastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea 00:10:22.519 --> 00:10:24.139 in what is now modern-day Turkey 00:10:24.139 --> 00:10:26.620 and was the center of learning and culture. 00:10:27.620 --> 00:10:30.539 Tarsus contained one of the three greatest Roman universities. 00:10:30.539 --> 00:10:35.919 So it was a pretty thriving town, a place where Greek life happened. 00:10:35.919 --> 00:10:41.939 As a boy, Paul was more than likely trained in Greco-Roman literature and logic 00:10:41.939 --> 00:10:44.599 because we see evidence of that in his writing. 00:10:45.299 --> 00:10:47.679 And then probably at the age of 13, 00:10:47.939 --> 00:10:49.339 we know none of this for fact, 00:10:49.419 --> 00:10:50.839 but probably at the age of 13, 00:10:51.559 --> 00:10:52.899 because that was the custom, 00:10:53.439 --> 00:10:55.719 he was sent to Jerusalem to be educated 00:10:55.719 --> 00:10:57.740 by a man named Hillel, 00:10:57.959 --> 00:11:00.259 who was the grandson of Gamaliel. 00:11:00.559 --> 00:11:01.500 Now, this is really important 00:11:01.500 --> 00:11:03.519 because he was the most famous rabbi of the time. 00:11:04.679 --> 00:11:08.240 The Jews actually didn't really use their scripture all that often in this time, 00:11:08.240 --> 00:11:10.500 but they used the writings of the rabbis 00:11:10.500 --> 00:11:13.179 to understand what the scripture said. 00:11:13.500 --> 00:11:15.580 You'll hear Jesus say in the Sermon on the Mount, 00:11:15.580 --> 00:11:17.519 you have heard it said. 00:11:18.340 --> 00:11:21.679 And what he's referring to are the writings of the rabbis. 00:11:22.019 --> 00:11:23.039 You have heard it said, 00:11:23.799 --> 00:11:57.019 We know that he was a tent maker by trade, 00:11:57.019 --> 00:11:59.960 and he more than likely, as he served in the synagogue, 00:12:00.419 --> 00:12:03.299 was a tent maker to make his living. 00:12:04.980 --> 00:12:07.840 When Paul heard, though, what was happening in Jerusalem, 00:12:08.139 --> 00:12:10.240 heard about Jesus and what was going on there, 00:12:10.980 -->
