00:03:25.319 --> 00:03:31.780 Well, it's a privilege to be opening up this psalm together, which is all about praising God. 00:03:32.460 --> 00:03:35.900 But what exactly does it mean to praise the Lord? 00:03:36.219 --> 00:03:38.159 Why should we praise God? 00:03:39.039 --> 00:03:42.479 As believers, praise is often associated with music and singing. 00:03:42.479 --> 00:03:47.840 And so we sing songs calling us to rejoice and to bless the Lord's holy name. 00:03:48.659 --> 00:03:55.599 And often it's a real joy to sing, isn't it, as we just did earlier, as we remind each other of God's goodness. 00:03:55.759 --> 00:03:58.739 Often it's a foretaste of the new creation almost. 00:03:58.899 --> 00:04:01.620 I don't know if you've been to a big Christian conference. 00:04:01.780 --> 00:04:07.159 Perhaps you get a glimpse, a taster of what the new creation will be like. 00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:11.179 But sadly, it doesn't always feel like that, doesn't it? 00:04:11.180 --> 00:04:14.620 Perhaps it's been a tiring week at work. 00:04:15.460 --> 00:04:17.579 Perhaps the kids have been up all night. 00:04:18.379 --> 00:04:20.920 Perhaps you've experienced a great loss recently. 00:04:21.759 --> 00:04:25.079 Or perhaps we're simply a glass half empty kind of person. 00:04:25.139 --> 00:04:28.680 And we just struggle naturally to feel thankful to God. 00:04:29.560 --> 00:04:36.079 A number of years ago, I was a ministry trainee in the west of England at a small village church. 00:04:36.079 --> 00:04:39.740 And the minister there was in charge of two parish churches. 00:04:40.099 --> 00:04:45.379 One of which had about 12 people attending where the average age was about 60 years old. 00:04:46.339 --> 00:04:49.800 And we sang traditional hymns accompanied by the organ every week. 00:04:50.579 --> 00:04:55.620 And to be honest, often it was a struggle to feel thankful, to feel the words I was singing. 00:04:55.620 --> 00:05:00.780 I'd been used to going to a big city church with great music and singing. 00:05:00.939 --> 00:05:03.500 And now it just felt like the complete opposite. 00:05:05.259 --> 00:05:08.060 So what does it mean to praise the Lord? 00:05:08.500 --> 00:05:09.480 Why should we? 00:05:09.959 --> 00:05:12.780 How can we when we don't feel like it? 00:05:13.680 --> 00:05:16.480 Well, our psalm today helps us with all of these questions. 00:05:16.480 --> 00:05:22.540 As we're near the end of the book of psalms, we come to the last psalm of King David. 00:05:23.360 --> 00:05:28.240 King David, as he leads his people to meditate on and praise our great God. 00:05:29.220 --> 00:05:36.700 If you've got your glasses on, you may have noticed in the footnote that this psalm is what's called an acrostic psalm. 00:05:36.840 --> 00:05:41.600 Meaning that every line begins with the next letter in the Hebrew alphabet. 00:05:42.360 --> 00:05:46.120 And so this psalm is kind of an A to Z of praise. 00:05:46.720 --> 00:05:51.600 You might want to call it 10,000 reasons to bless the Lord if you're writing a modern hymn about it. 00:05:53.120 --> 00:05:57.860 And whilst we're on the fascinating topic of footnotes, you might also have noticed another one for verse 13. 00:05:58.480 --> 00:06:03.600 Which says that these two lines are supplied by one Hebrew manuscript, Septuagint and Syriac. 00:06:03.600 --> 00:06:11.439 Which just means that it's unclear whether that bracketed verse was part of the original psalm or whether it was added in later. 00:06:11.439 --> 00:06:18.839 But either way, it doesn't really affect the main meaning of the psalm as it says the same thing to the rest of the psalm. 00:06:19.800 --> 00:06:24.779 As we work through this psalm, we're going to see an increasing volume of doesn't it? 00:07:01.720 --> 00:07:07.320 I mean, sure, I can praise the Lord on a Sunday or when I'm feeling okay about life. 00:07:08.120 --> 00:07:13.720 But every day, forever and ever, it just sounds a bit much, doesn't it? 00:07:13.960 --> 00:07:15.180 And overly pious. 00:07:15.180 --> 00:07:21.420 But David reminds the people of God, God's name in verse 1. 00:07:21.939 --> 00:07:24.699 Referring to God's personal name, Yahweh. 00:07:25.220 --> 00:07:28.840 The one who revealed himself to Moses at the burning bush. 00:07:29.420 --> 00:07:35.240 And to Israel when he saved them from the Egyptians and led them through the Red Sea. 00:07:37.460 --> 00:07:41.879 And so David, even though he is Israel's king, he is also the model Israelite. 00:07:41.879 --> 00:07:47.240 And he models for the people of God the correct response to God. 00:07:48.439 --> 00:07:54.219 And so you can imagine an Israelite back then reading this after having been rescued from their exile to Babylon. 00:07:54.819 --> 00:07:58.699 And singing this psalm to praise God for rescuing them. 00:07:59.879 --> 00:08:02.060 And even Israelite back then could pray this. 00:08:02.120 --> 00:08:03.300 Well, how much more can we? 00:08:04.420 --> 00:08:09.600 Because in the Lord Jesus, we do have infinite reasons to praise the Lord. 00:08:09.600 --> 00:08:14.200 He is our great God and King who has I'm not talking about the hairy animal. 00:08:39.559 --> 00:08:43.720 But I'm talking about the acronym which stands for the greatest of all time. 00:08:44.079 --> 00:08:48.379 Which has become a slightly overused word to describe athletes at the top of their game. 00:08:48.460 --> 00:08:51.460 Or even to describe the chicken shop with the best wings. 00:08:52.039 --> 00:08:56.199 But it's a term which apparently traces back to the boxer Muhammad Ali. 00:08:56.559 --> 00:08:58.539 Who often called himself the greatest. 00:08:59.379 --> 00:09:01.039 He once said, I am the greatest. 00:09:01.460 --> 00:09:03.759 I said that even before I knew I was. 00:09:03.759 --> 00:09:05.980 Which I guess makes him a prophet as well. 00:09:07.120 --> 00:09:09.740 But that's the way of the world, isn't it? 00:09:10.139 --> 00:09:12.879 Greatness is measured in outward success. 00:09:13.439 --> 00:09:14.980 And beating down your opponents. 00:09:15.539 --> 00:09:19.460 Whether that's on the pitch, in the boardroom, or in the exam scores. 00:09:21.019 --> 00:09:24.720 But true greatness according to Jesus looks the complete opposite, doesn't it? 00:09:25.740 --> 00:09:26.620 Philippians 2. 00:09:26.620 --> 00:09:32.120 You'll know that Jesus humbled himself by taking on the form of a human servant. 00:09:32.759 --> 00:09:35.279 Even to the point of death on a cross. 00:09:36.320 --> 00:09:37.879 It's absolutely outrageous. 00:09:38.779 --> 00:09:42.000 The Son of God, the King of Kings, empties himself. 00:09:43.259 --> 00:09:47.620 He empties himself of his greatness and willingly stoops to bear our sin. 00:09:48.179 --> 00:09:50.620 To purchase our freedom and forgiveness. 00:09:50.620 --> 00:09:56.620 And therefore God has highly exalted him and given him the name above all names. 00:09:57.940 --> 00:10:00.519 That is what true greatness looks like. 00:10:01.000 --> 00:10:04.019 Laying down one's life to serve others. 00:10:05.039 --> 00:10:08.659 And so of course we give our praise to this great King. 00:10:08.659 --> 00:10:15.759 And so it's a challenging reminder that actually devotion to God is not just a Sunday thing. 00:10:16.679 --> 00:10:18.480 But it's more of a daily instinct. 00:10:18.879 --> 00:10:19.740 A heart posture. 00:10:19.939 --> 00:10:24.279 A default mindset that always wants to give thanks to God. 00:10:25.579 --> 00:10:26.779 Which sounds quite difficult, doesn't it? 00:10:26.819 --> 00:10:28.379 And frankly impossible. 00:10:29.299 --> 00:10:35.299 Often when I'm praying, my tendency is just to bring my requests immediately to God. 00:10:35.720 --> 00:10:37.000 You know, God help me with this thing. 00:10:37.000 --> 00:10:40.419 God help me to love that annoying person at work. 00:10:41.299 --> 00:10:43.000 Which is of course right to do. 00:10:43.080 --> 00:10:46.000 God calls us to lay our burdens before him. 00:10:47.399 --> 00:10:52.960 But this psalm in particular challenges us intentionally to give thanks to God. 00:10:54.259 --> 00:10:55.200 Which is hard, right? 00:10:55.279 --> 00:10:57.879 You can't just force yourself to do it. 00:10:58.039 --> 00:11:00.340 If I tell us fuel to give thanks to him. 00:11:10.460 --> 00:11:12.000 And that's where the psalmist goes next. 00:11:12.800 --> 00:11:16.960 And so point two, we can praise the Lord because of his steadfast love. 00:11:17.500 --> 00:11:19.800 We can praise the Lord because of his steadfast love. 00:11:20.560 --> 00:11:21.519 Have a look at verse four. 00:11:23.519 --> 00:11:23.920 Verse four. 00:11:23.919 --> 00:11:32.319 Well what are these mighty acts, you might ask? 00:11:32.979 --> 00:11:33.959 Well have a look at verse eight. 00:11:34.679 --> 00:11:36.479 The Lord is gracious and merciful. 00:11:37.339 --> 00:11:39.939 Slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. 00:11:40.599 --> 00:11:42.059 The Lord is good to all. 00:11:42.459 --> 00:11:45.939 And his mercy is over all that he has made. 00:11:45.940 --> 00:11:53.020 Now if you're an Israelite back then, you would immediately know the back story to these verses. 00:11:53.600 --> 00:11:57.980 Because these words are some of the most significant words in the entire Bible. 00:11:59.480 --> 00:12:02.700 And it came at a critical point in Israel's history. 00:12:03.460 --> 00:12:07.940 You may remember the disaster of the golden calf in Exodus 32. 00:12:08.120 --> 00:12:10.840 God's people have just been rescued out of Egypt. 00:12:10.840 --> 00:12:14.660 And God has been speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai. 00:12:15.080 --> 00:12:19.920 Laying out the terms of the covenant relationship he will establish with his people. 00:12:21.200 --> 00:12:25.480 But after 40 days of Moses going AWOL, the people decide, okay we've had enough. 00:12:25.960 --> 00:12:32.139 We're just going to chuck our earrings into the pan and make this golden calf as a stand-in for God. 00:12:33.800 --> 00:12:38.480 And yet despite this treachery, God still decides to take them back. 00:12:38.480 --> 00:12:41.759 And he proclaims these beautiful words. 00:12:42.060 --> 00:12:44.159 That he is gracious and merciful. 00:12:44.879 --> 00:12:47.659 Slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. 00:12:49.720 --> 00:12:54.300 And for the Christian believer, well we have all the more reason to praise God. 00:12:55.220 Which actually was all the more encouraging to me. 00:16:10.460 --> 00:16:14.060 Because it was clear that he was not trying to audition for the X Factor. 00:16:14.660 --> 00:16:18.259 But he was trying to encourage his brothers and sisters. 00:16:20.160 --> 00:16:24.019 And of course we can also declare God's greatness to each other when we're not singing. 00:16:25.100 --> 00:16:27.200 Whether that's sharing with each other after church. 00:16:27.639 --> 00:16:29.900 This particular truth really encouraged me. 00:16:30.639 --> 00:16:32.500 Or doing that in small groups during the All throughout the Bible. 00:16:42.160 --> 00:16:44.920 That is the mark of a genuinely converted believer. 00:16:45.320 --> 00:16:48.300 Their tongues are loosened to declare God's greatness. 00:16:49.379 --> 00:16:51.139 As Peter and John say in the book of Acts. 00:16:51.220 --> 00:16:55.019 We cannot but speak of what we have heard and seen. 00:16:56.500 --> 00:16:58.019 And so whether that's encouraging believers. 00:16:58.139 --> 00:17:00.120 Or proclaiming the gospel to unbelievers. 00:17:00.259 --> 00:17:03.019 Let's keep spurring each other to do that. 00:17:04.420 --> 00:17:24.339 --> 00:17:26.679 We started off with the psalmist praising God. 00:17:27.179 --> 00:17:30.179 Who then summons all the saints to praise him. 00:17:30.180 --> 00:17:33.080 But now the end in verse 21. 00:17:33.279 --> 00:17:39.000 The psalmist calls all flesh to bless his holy name forever and ever. 00:17:40.620 --> 00:17:45.820 And the big reason that all people should praise him is
