letter on the passion and work of the Lord Jesus. 00:01:18.659 --> 00:01:24.899 So, in focusing on the passion and work of the Lord Jesus as the answer to our problems, 00:01:24.900 --> 00:01:31.480 it's following the pattern that we see from time to time in the Word of God. 00:01:32.480 --> 00:01:39.340 And as we look at this chapter itself, it reminds us that there is a context and that there start, stops beating. 00:04:05.419 --> 00:04:07.079 It's when our organs fail. 00:04:08.099 --> 00:04:10.259 It's when there appears to be nothing. 00:04:12.259 --> 00:04:15.060 And the writer in Ecclesiastes speaks of the way in which 00:04:15.060 --> 00:04:20.699 the dust returns to the earth as it was, 00:04:21.159 --> 00:04:25.879 and the spirit returns to God who gave it. 00:04:25.879 --> 00:04:33.500 Death is the end of our visible lives here in this world. 00:04:34.819 --> 00:04:37.019 And at the beginning of our service this evening, 00:04:37.740 --> 00:04:43.699 I wanted to think for some time on the solemn issue of our death. 00:04:43.699 --> 00:04:47.879 And if we're going to think about death in a biblical way, 00:04:48.120 --> 00:04:54.180 we want to see there are three elements to death as the Bible brings it before us. 00:04:55.159 --> 00:04:58.699 And the first of these is that death is physical. 00:05:00.539 --> 00:05:05.159 There is that separation of body and soul. 00:05:05.160 --> 00:05:14.560 It is physical in the sense that there is a tearing apart of the creation of God 00:05:14.560 --> 00:05:19.080 in the sense in which body and soul are separated. 00:05:21.220 --> 00:05:27.120 And such is the awfulness of death, physical, 00:05:27.120 --> 00:05:36.160 that it is tearing apart the very thing that God has created in all of its beauty. penalty of our covenant breaking. 00:06:30.820 --> 00:06:31.460 And thirdly, 00:06:33.000 --> 00:06:35.720 death is eternal. 00:06:37.620 --> 00:06:42.520 It's described in the book of Revelation as this morning 00:06:52.419 --> 00:06:56.539 the way in which Jesus himself speaks about eternal death. 00:06:57.699 --> 00:06:59.599 The fiery furnace 00:06:59.599 --> 00:07:04.120 where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. 00:07:05.299 --> 00:07:06.519 It's eternal. 00:07:07.479 --> 00:07:08.719 It's permanent. 00:07:08.720 --> 00:07:12.400 And when the Bible speaks about death,
