Last Sunday, we finally came to these words of Jesus that we find in John 00:00:11.679 --> 00:00:20.519 chapter 14, verse 12. He said, very truly, I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I 00:00:20.519 --> 00:00:26.900 have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the 00:00:26.899 --> 00:00:33.659 Father. And so last Sunday, we acknowledged the plain sense of these words. They seem to say that 00:00:33.659 --> 00:00:40.719 whoever believes in Jesus will perform miracles like he did. And we acknowledge that this kind of 00:00:40.719 --> 00:00:47.439 makes us uncomfortable, many of us, because many of us who believe in Jesus have never performed a 00:00:47.439 --> 00:00:52.619 miracle. So we looked at various ways that Christians have tried to interpret these words. 00:00:52.619 --> 00:00:59.399 Generally, our Pentecostal brothers and sisters will point to this verse and say that performing 00:00:59.399 --> 00:01:06.359 miracles is something that every Christian can and should do, so long as we have the faith and believe. 00:01:06.840 --> 00:01:13.819 We can expect to perform miracles like Jesus did. And last Sunday, I pointed us to what Paul said 00:01:13.819 --> 00:01:21.739 in 1 Corinthians 12, verse 29, where he said, do all work miracles? Implied answer, no. 00:01:21.739 --> 00:01:30.179 So most of us do not accept the Pentecostal interpretation. Then we considered how some have 00:01:30.179 --> 00:01:38.299 tried to define the works of Jesus very broadly, to include all sorts of things that Jesus did, 00:01:38.439 --> 00:01:45.399 not just the miracles. According to this view, Jesus is not saying that every believer will do miracles, 00:01:45.400 --> 00:01:52.180 but that every believer will do some kind of the works that Jesus has been doing. And for most of us, 00:01:52.180 --> 00:02:01.880 it turns out that that's the non-miraculous works of Jesus. And I suggested that defining works this way 00:02:01.880 --> 00:02:10.240 doesn't work, because Jesus has just appealed to his works in the verse before as the evidence that he is in 00:02:10.240 --> 00:02:19.080 the Father and that the Father is in him. It has to at least include his miracles. And in case there's 00:02:19.080 --> 00:02:23.740 any doubt about this, we could fast forward in the conversation this night of Jesus' betrayal, 00:02:24.060 --> 00:02:30.700 a little farther forward to John chapter 15, verse 24. And Jesus will say this later to his disciples. 00:02:30.900 --> 00:02:37.920 He'll say, if I had not done among them, that's the people of the world, the works that no one else did, 00:02:37.919 --> 00:02:47.659 they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. 00:02:49.599 --> 00:02:54.819 Notice how Jesus describes the works that he's been doing. He says that they are the works that no one 00:02:54.819 --> 00:03:01.959 else has been doing. The works no one else did. They're not just the works of compassion or service. 00:03:01.960 --> 00:03:08.420 they're not just the works of calling people to faith and to repent like John the Baptist did. 00:03:08.620 --> 00:03:13.620 They're the works that nobody else has been doing, that nobody else could do. The supernatural 00:03:13.620 --> 00:03:22.020 miracles brought about by the power of God. And of course, yes, the disciples did share in doing 00:03:22.020 --> 00:03:26.020 some of those works as Jesus gave them authority and power to do it. 00:03:26.020 --> 00:03:35.180 So, the works of Jesus must include his miracles. Those are the things that no one else has done 00:03:35.180 --> 00:03:41.180 in the lifetime of these people. And so, I suggested last Sunday that there's another way to understand 00:03:41.180 --> 00:03:50.000 this passage. And it goes like this. Very truly, I tell you here in the room with me this evening, 00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:57.719 Jesus speaking to his disciples, his apostles, whoever of you believes in me will do the works 00:03:57.719 --> 00:04:04.199 I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I'm going to the Father. 00:04:05.319 --> 00:04:10.479 I suggested that Jesus was not giving a timeless principle for every believer throughout the ages, 00:04:10.920 --> 00:04:17.199 but that Jesus was making a statement about what the 11 apostles there in the room could expect 00:04:17.199 --> 00:04:25.180 once he was gone. They could expect that if they believed in him, they too would do the works that 00:04:25.180 --> 00:04:35.279 Jesus had been doing. Supernaturally enabled miracles like Jesus did. And then we looked at one of those 00:04:35.279 --> 00:04:41.620 miracles in the book of Acts, the healing of the man who had been born lame at the gate called Beautiful. 00:04:41.620 --> 00:04:49.060 And I suggested that the book of Acts really tells the story of how these 11 men in the room with Jesus 00:04:49.060 --> 00:04:57.379 this night came to do the works that Jesus has been doing, just as he said they would. Now, all of this 00:04:57.379 --> 00:05:04.639 kind of raised some big questions. For starters, what did Jesus mean when he said that they would do even 00:05:04.639 --> 00:05:12.439 greater works than Jesus did? Last Sunday, I said we'd chat about that this Sunday, but after my 00:05:12.439 --> 00:05:19.120 sermon ballooned to over 45 minutes long, I decided to chop that section out completely and put it on a 00:05:19.120 --> 00:05:24.759 piece of paper on a handout that you can grab off the back table on your way out if that's of interest 00:05:24.759 --> 00:05:32.759 to you. My short answer is, I do not know. There are at least three possibilities, and I would guess that 00:05:32.759 --> 00:05:39.060 it probably has something to do with the fact that Jesus is going to the Father. It seems that this is 00:05:39.060 --> 00:05:46.579 going to bring about a change, a significant change in how this ministry will look for the apostles when 00:05:46.579 --> 00:05:55.199 he's gone, which brings us to these next two verses. Jesus says to the men in the room, 00:05:55.199 --> 00:06:20.899 These verses are ones that we often point to as our assurance that God will answer our prayers. 00:06:20.899 --> 00:06:28.399 But I wonder, have we been too quick to just take these words and apply them to ourselves? 00:06:29.579 --> 00:06:37.539 Have we considered where these words fit in the conversation that night? As I suggested last 00:06:37.539 --> 00:06:43.259 Sunday, Jesus is telling these 11 men in the room, the apostles, that if they believe in him, 00:06:43.699 --> 00:06:47.639 they will do the works that he has been doing. Miracles. 00:06:47.639 --> 00:06:58.459 Does he now change the subject completely to just prayer in general? Or is it possible that Jesus 00:06:58.459 --> 00:07:07.300 is still talking about the same thing? If you believe in me, you, my apostles, will do the works 00:07:07.300 --> 00:07:14.339 I have been doing. That's miracles. Because I am going to the Father, and here's how it will work. 00:07:14.339 --> 00:07:25.119 From then on, whatever you ask in my name, I will do it for you, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 00:07:27.219 --> 00:07:33.259 So often we just kind of take these two verses about prayer and just kind of rip them right off the page, 00:07:33.439 --> 00:07:36.939 and just that's all we look at. But there's a context here. There's a flow. 00:07:36.939 --> 00:07:42.620 If you just kind of read it all the way through in one go, do you hear that? 00:07:43.719 --> 00:07:46.740 Whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, 00:07:47.040 --> 00:07:50.040 and they will do even greater things than these, 00:07:50.259 --> 00:07:55.319 because I am going to the Father, and I will do whatever you ask in my name, 00:07:55.839 --> 00:08:00.379 so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 00:08:00.379 --> 00:08:08.560 I want to suggest the possibility that what Jesus is saying here is that 00:08:08.560 --> 00:08:13.120 the disciples will do the works that Jesus has been doing, 00:08:13.420 --> 00:08:17.500 miracles, by asking in Jesus' name. 00:08:19.719 --> 00:08:23.240 Now, this might still be a promise of answered prayer that we can all claim, 00:08:23.399 --> 00:08:27.159 but before we get to that, we have to first consider what Jesus is saying 00:08:27.160 --> 00:08:30.260 to these 11 men sitting there in the room with him. 00:08:31.260 --> 00:08:36.300 It seems, from the context, that this promise of answered prayer 00:08:36.300 --> 00:08:42.720 has to do with them doing the works that Jesus has been doing. 00:08:44.500 --> 00:08:47.560 And maybe at this point we kind of need to take a step back 00:08:47.560 --> 00:08:52.399 and just consider this whole conversation between Jesus and his disciples 00:08:52.399 --> 00:08:54.379 on the night of his betrayal. 00:08:54.379 --> 00:08:57.679 They've just had the Last Supper. 00:08:57.840 --> 00:08:59.220 They're having this conversation. 00:08:59.519 --> 00:09:03.639 They're going to end up out at the Garden of Gethsemane this very night. 00:09:04.939 --> 00:09:08.120 And there are going to be lots of things that Jesus says to them 00:09:08.120 --> 00:09:12.679 that are basically timeless principles for every believer. 00:09:13.059 --> 00:09:14.799 For example, in the next chapter, 00:09:14.939 --> 00:09:17.840 Jesus will give this analogy of the vine and the branches. 00:09:18.600 --> 00:09:19.659 I am the vine. 00:09:20.320 --> 00:09:21.419 You are the branches. 00:09:21.799 --> 00:09:22.860 Remain in me. 00:09:22.860 --> 00:09:29.300 And this is basically a timeless principle for every believer. 00:09:30.399 --> 00:09:32.600 We need to remain in Christ. 00:09:32.700 --> 00:09:34.519 We need to stay connected to him. 00:09:35.100 --> 00:09:35.879 He is the vine. 00:09:35.980 --> 00:09:36.720 We are the branches. 00:09:36.840 --> 00:09:39.740 And we know this because John, later in his letter, 00:09:47.879 Remain in him. 00:09:47.879 --> 00:09:54.980 And there are lots of things like this that Jesus will say to the eleven this night 00:09:54.980 --> 00:09:57.779 that directly apply to us, just like this. 00:09:57.820 --> 00:09:59.519 He encourages them to love each other, 00:09:59.759 --> 00:10:01.039 to serve one another. 00:10:01.700 --> 00:10:04.439 All of these things are reiterated throughout the New Testament 00:10:04.439 --> 00:10:05.539 that all believers, 00:10:05.720 --> 00:10:07.139 that we should be doing this. 00:10:07.200 --> 00:10:08.480 We should be doing these things. 00:10:08.480 --> 00:10:13.000 But then we have to acknowledge in a few places in this conversation 00:10:13.000 --> 00:10:15.899 that there are some things Jesus said 00:10:15.899 --> 00:10:21.480 that are bound to these particular eleven men in the room with Jesus. 00:10:21.639 --> 00:10:22.220 For example, 00:10:22.539 --> 00:10:25.279 at the end of chapter 15, 00:10:25.440 --> 00:10:28.500 Jesus warns the disciples about what's coming, 00:10:28.600 --> 00:10:29.720 not for every believer, 00:10:29.720 --> 00:10:31.639 but just for them. 00:10:32.660 --> 00:10:33.120 He says, 00:10:33.200 --> 00:10:34.920 And you also must testify, 00:10:35.560 --> 00:10:38.560 for you have been with me from the beginning. 00:10:39.840 --> 00:10:43.519 All this I told you so that you will not fall away. 00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:45.920 They will put you out of the synagogue. 00:10:47.300 --> 00:10:49.720 In fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you 00:10:49.720 --> 00:10:52.399 will think they're offering a service to God. 00:10:54.220 --> 00:10:57.779 These are obviously words for the eleven there that night 00:10:57.779 --> 00:10:58.940 and not for all of us. 00:10:58.940 --> 00:11:01.980 It's the eleven apostles who have been there with Jesus 00:11:01.980 --> 00:11:03.660 from the beginning of his ministry. 00:11:04.720 --> 00:11:06.220 And it's the eleven apostles 00:11:06.220 --> 00:11:08.560 who will be excommunicated, 00:11:09.200 --> 00:11:11.140 kicked out of the synagogues 00:11:11.140 --> 00:11:12.860 in the days ahead. 00:11:14.520 --> 00:11:17.280 So coming back to these words that we're looking at, 00:11:17.340 --> 00:11:18.420 John 14, 13, 00:11:18.760 --> 00:11:22.360 let's first think about what these words mean to the apostles, 00:11:22.580 --> 00:11:25.780 to the disciples there in the room with Jesus. 00:11:26.300 --> 00:11:27.280 Jesus says to them, 00:11:27.279 --> 00:11:30.519 And I will do whatever you ask in my name 00:11:30.519 --> 00:11:34.699 so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 00:11:35.639 --> 00:11:38.659 You may ask me for anything in my name 00:11:38.659 --> 00:11:40.559 and I will do it. 00:11:41.439 --> 00:11:44.379 You know, it kind of sounds like Jesus is giving them a blank check, 00:11:44.480 --> 00:11:44.959 doesn't it? 00:11:45.620 --> 00:11:48.639 Whatever you ask in my name, 00:11:48.699 --> 00:11:49.679 I will do. 00:11:49.679 --> 00:11:51.799 And that word whatever, 00:11:51.939 --> 00:11:53.359 I mean, that's a strong word. 00:11:53.459 --> 00:11:54.019 It's not 00:12:19.720 --> 00:12:21.680 He's giving them the privilege 00:12:21.680 --> 00:12:24.300 of being able to call upon him 00:12:24.300 --> 00:12:26.360 to do anything 00:12:26.360 --> 00:12:29.500 and the assurance that he will do it. 00:12:29.500 --> 00:12:33.080 But the blank check 00:12:33.080 --> 00:12:35.419 has a few security features, 00:12:35.519 --> 00:12:36.059 we'll call them. 00:12:36.360 --> 00:12:37.759 It has a few safeguards 00:12:37.759 --> 00:12:40.820 that ensure that it will be used appropriately. 00:12:41.679 --> 00:12:44.200 They can write whatsoever they want
