may be a symbol or something that you have heard of before, you understand, and 00:00:22.580 --> 00:00:26.620 maybe this is the first time you've heard the story, you have very little understanding 00:00:38.019 we understand the true value of the Ark and how it applies to us today. 00:00:38.820 --> 00:00:43.439 Because I think oftentimes there can be occasion where we don't really understand the 00:00:56.879 It's not the most entertaining or stimulating show, but it kind of tracks different antique 00:00:56.879 --> 00:00:58.000 shows across the nation. 00:00:58.000 --> 00:01:00.259 It's actually a UK version and a US version. 00:01:00.859 --> 00:01:04.200 And it's these people that come and bring these items, and they don't really know how 00:01:04.200 --> 00:01:04.980 valuable they are. 00:01:05.019 --> 00:01:06.120 They want them to get them appraised. 00:01:06.420 --> 00:01:11.560 And so we see this dialogue between an appraiser and this person who has this item, whether she got an antique shop for $25. 00:01:30.539 --> 00:01:34.799 And as the man, the appraiser is looking at it, he points out a lot of the details and 00:01:34.799 --> 00:01:36.259 intricacies of it worth about a quarter of a million 00:01:45.239 --> 00:01:50.019 dollars, over 10,000 times more than what she paid for it. 00:01:50.640 --> 00:01:52.159 And so, of course, she was shocked. 00:01:52.379 --> 00:01:56.340 It goes on to show her a few weeks later, she actually went to auction to try to sell this 00:01:56.340 --> 00:01:59.159 table because it was far more valuable to And so I think that's telling. 00:02:16.319 --> 00:02:20.780 Again, when we think about the Ark of the Covenant today, we can read a story like this like 00:02:20.780 --> 00:02:23.319 we will and think, what's the big deal? 00:02:24.879 --> 00:02:28.939 Why in the world does God have, does he act this way? 00:02:28.939 --> 00:02:31.719 What are we supposed to learn and glean from this story? 00:02:31.800 --> 00:02:33.259 What's the significance of the story? 00:02:33.520 --> 00:02:37.000 And I think we learn the significance when we understand the value of the Ark. 00:02:37.659 --> 00:02:42.520 The value of the Ark not only to the people of Israel in the Old Testament, but the value 00:02:42.520 --> 00:02:48.139 of the Ark and the symbolism that it shows us today about God's character, about his holiness, 00:02:48.919 --> 00:02:54.319 about his desire for relationship with us, and how that's meant to influence our lives. 00:02:54.319 --> 00:03:00.479 And so let's turn then to our passage, 2 Samuel 6, starting in verse 1. 00:03:01.840 --> 00:03:06.019 David again brought together all the able young men in Israel, 30,000. 00:03:06.879 --> 00:03:13.500 He and all the men went to Baal in Judah to bring up from there the Ark of God, which is called by the 00:03:13.500 --> 00:03:18.400 name, the name of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim on the Ark. 00:03:18.400 --> 00:03:25.340 They set the Ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. 00:03:26.060 --> 00:03:32.360 Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart with the Ark of God on it, and Ahio 00:03:32.360 --> 00:03:33.819 was walking in front of it. 00:03:34.400 --> 00:03:39.420 David and all of Israel were celebrating with all their might before the Lord, with castanets, 00:03:39.939 --> 00:03:44.939 harps, lyres, trembles, sistrums, and cymbals. 00:03:44.939 --> 00:03:51.359 When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the Ark of God, 00:03:51.419 --> 00:03:52.759 because the oxen stumbled. 00:03:53.819 --> 00:03:57.340 The Lord's anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act. 00:03:58.039 --> 00:04:02.139 Therefore, God struck him down, and he died there beside the Ark of God. 00:04:03.259 --> 00:04:09.319 Then David was angry because the Lord's wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day the place 00:04:09.319 --> 00:04:10.719 is called Perez-Uzzah. 00:04:10.719 --> 00:04:16.480 David was afraid of the Lord that day and said, How can the Ark of the Lord ever come to me? 00:04:17.500 --> 00:04:21.259 He was not willing to take the Ark of the Lord to be with him in the city of David. 00:04:21.360 --> 00:04:25.199 Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-Edom, the Gittite. 00:04:26.199 --> 00:04:30.139 The Ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-Edom, the Gittite, for three months, 00:04:30.199 --> 00:04:32.480 and the Lord blessed him and his entire household. 00:04:32.480 --> 00:04:39.620 Now King David was told, The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-Edom and everything he has 00:04:39.620 --> 00:04:41.360 because of the Ark of God. 00:04:42.000 --> 00:04:47.259 So David went to bring up the Ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the city of David with rejoicing. 00:04:47.980 --> 00:04:53.360 When those who were carrying the Ark of the Lord had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. 00:04:53.360 --> 00:04:59.020 And wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his 00:07:08.339 I think it's appropriate if we start and give a little background so we have the proper context, 00:07:08.439 --> 00:07:10.659 especially if you're not familiar with a passage like this. 00:07:11.519 --> 00:07:13.680 If we go back to the beginning of Exodus, 00:07:13.680 --> 00:07:17.160 we know that the people of Israel have been placed in captivity. 00:07:18.199 --> 00:07:20.600 For 400 years, they're slaves in Egypt, 00:07:21.139 --> 00:07:23.240 until God raises up a leader for them, Moses, 00:07:23.360 --> 00:07:29.379 to deliver them out of Egypt to the promised land that God had promised their forefather, Abraham, long before. 00:07:30.060 --> 00:07:32.840 And as they're on this journey to the promised land, 00:07:32.899 --> 00:07:34.519 the 40 years that they spend in the wilderness, 00:07:34.740 --> 00:07:41.319 we know that God gives them laws for them to follow in how they live and how they ought to worship. 00:07:41.319 --> 00:07:45.259 And included in these laws is instructions for the building of a tabernacle, 00:07:45.379 --> 00:07:47.500 a place of worship for the Lord. 00:07:48.360 --> 00:07:52.319 And so within this tabernacle, we read that they're supposed to make this Ark of the Covenant. 00:07:52.420 --> 00:07:54.639 This is what we read in Hebrews just a minute ago. 00:07:55.180 --> 00:07:56.920 And this Ark was a wooden box. 00:07:57.159 --> 00:08:00.039 It was plated in gold, roughly a meter long, 00:08:00.120 --> 00:08:02.620 probably about the same size as this lectern here, 00:08:03.399 --> 00:08:06.079 a little bit less than a meter high and a meter wide, 00:08:06.920 --> 00:08:08.980 and it was not to be touched by human hands. 00:08:08.980 --> 00:08:12.500 It had rings on the side for being carried with poles, 00:08:13.140 --> 00:08:17.439 poles that were made of acacia wood covered in gold that were to be carried only by the Levites. 00:08:17.560 --> 00:08:20.240 Inside this box was placed the Ten Commandments. 00:08:20.340 --> 00:08:22.319 On top was something called the Mercy Seat, 00:08:23.100 --> 00:08:26.640 made of gold, these two cherubim with their arms outstretched. 00:08:27.439 --> 00:08:30.200 And it was here that God said he would meet with his people. 00:08:30.819 --> 00:08:33.680 It was here that God's presence would dwell. 00:08:33.679 --> 00:08:37.699 And so this is where the high priest would come once a year, 00:08:37.839 --> 00:08:41.039 sprinkling the blood sacrifice on the Ark 00:08:41.039 --> 00:08:44.319 to symbolize the wiping away of the sins of the people. 00:08:45.319 --> 00:08:49.059 And so while the Ark was meant to be kept here in the Holy of Holies in the tabernacle, 00:08:49.539 --> 00:08:51.359 the people of Israel were often on the move. 00:08:51.939 --> 00:08:54.279 And so oftentimes this Ark would be in the middle of the people 00:08:54.279 --> 00:08:56.099 as they moved through the wilderness. 00:08:56.739 --> 00:08:59.639 But there was occasion when they were moving into the Promised Land 00:08:59.639 --> 00:09:02.000 that the Ark was at the front of this procession. 00:09:02.539 --> 00:09:05.179 We may remember that when they finally entered the Promised Land, 00:09:05.240 --> 00:09:06.480 when they crossed the Jordan River, 00:09:06.559 --> 00:09:09.259 it was the Ark and the priest carrying the Ark that went first. 00:09:09.319 --> 00:09:10.720 And as they stepped into the Jordan, 00:09:11.319 --> 00:09:13.899 it turned into dry land and they entered the land of Canaan. 00:09:14.759 --> 00:09:16.919 Also, it was the Ark that led the people of Israel 00:09:16.919 --> 00:09:19.319 around the city walls of Jericho. 00:09:20.100 --> 00:09:21.939 And the walls came tumbling down. 00:09:23.179 --> 00:09:26.779 Well, as we move forward in the story of the history of Israel, 00:09:26.860 --> 00:09:28.980 we know that they settled in the Promised Land, 00:09:28.980 --> 00:09:30.480 but the fighting didn't cease. 00:09:30.960 --> 00:09:32.560 Oftentimes they were fighting their enemies, 00:09:32.700 --> 00:09:33.960 and on one occasion they were fighting, 00:09:34.379 --> 00:09:37.000 battling the Philistines, and they were losing. 00:09:38.019 --> 00:09:39.440 And so the elders come together and say, 00:09:39.500 --> 00:09:41.840 hey, wouldn't it be a good idea if we bring the Ark 00:09:41.840 --> 00:09:44.680 from the Holy of Holies and bring it with us in battle 00:09:44.680 --> 00:09:46.340 that we can overpower our enemies? 00:09:47.039 --> 00:09:49.940 Now, this wasn't anything that God had instructed them to do. 00:09:49.940 --> 00:09:52.340 This was of their own ideation. 00:09:52.720 --> 00:09:57.779 They think they're treating the Ark more like a good luck charm 00:09:57.779 --> 00:09:58.639 than anything else. 00:09:59.579 --> 00:10:01.879 And as a result, Israel's defeated. 00:10:02.759 --> 00:10:04.639 And the Ark is captured by the Philistines 00:10:04.639 --> 00:10:06.339 who take it with them back to their land. 00:10:07.559 --> 00:10:09.939 And so we can't go into all these details this morning, 00:10:10.019 --> 00:10:12.980 but if we were to continue in 1 Samuel chapter 5, 00:10:13.019 --> 00:10:14.459 we'd see what happened to the Philistines 00:10:14.459 --> 00:10:16.120 when they take this Ark to their land. 00:10:16.679 --> 00:10:18.980 They experience in the cursing and punishment of God. 00:10:19.259 --> 00:10:21.419 The people of the Philistines start growing these tumors, 00:10:21.559 --> 00:10:23.659 and they realize God is judging them for having this Ark. 00:10:23.659 --> 00:10:24.639 We need to send it back. 00:10:25.480 --> 00:10:27.500 And so they put it on this cart carried by these two cows 00:10:27.500 --> 00:10:29.120 and point it in the direction of Israel. 00:10:30.179 --> 00:10:34.079 And the people of Israel, they reclaim this Ark 00:10:34.079 --> 00:10:36.279 just across the border of Israel, 00:10:36.379 --> 00:10:39.179 but it's kept on the border of Israel 00:10:39.179 --> 00:10:42.980 in this little town basically for storage 00:10:42.980 --> 00:10:44.039 for the next 20 years. 00:10:44.759 --> 00:10:46.899 And so for the entire reign of King Saul, 00:10:47.100 --> 00:10:48.439 it's not used for worship. 00:10:48.559 --> 00:10:49.919 It's not kept in the tabernacle. 00:10:49.919 --> 00:10:51.799 It remains unmoved and unused 00:10:51.799 --> 00:10:54.699 in the periphery of the land of Israel. 00:10:55.819 --> 00:10:58.059 And so that brings us to our passage today 00:10:58.059 --> 00:11:02.479 when King David wants to go and get this Ark 00:11:02.479 --> 00:11:04.259 and bring it to the new capital, 00:11:04.559 --> 00:11:06.279 to the city of David, to Jerusalem. 00:11:06.899 --> 00:11:09.039 And so what I want us to consider in our passage today 00:11:09.039 --> 00:11:11.399 is three things that this passage points out to us, 00:11:11.459 --> 00:11:13.620 three Ps that we see in this passage. 00:11:13.759 --> 00:11:15.899 First is the passion for the Ark. 00:11:15.899 --> 00:11:19.459 Secondly, the problem with the Ark. 00:11:20.059 --> 00:11:23.059 And thirdly, the promise of the Ark. 00:11:23.299 --> 00:11:26.120 The passion for the Ark, the problem with the Ark, 00:11:26.199 --> 00:11:27.240 and the promise of the Ark. 00:11:27.539 --> 00:11:29.539 So let's consider first the passion of the Ark. 00:11:30.299 --> 00:11:32.679 We see in 2 Samuel 5 that David is made king. 00:11:32.819 --> 00:11:33.799 Saul has been killed. 00:11:34.299 --> 00:11:36.740 David has already been anointed as the next king, 00:11:36.899 --> 00:11:38.159 and he is made king. 00:11:38.459 --> 00:11:40.000 And when the Philistines hear about this, 00:11:40.039 --> 00:11:41.559 they want to stop this right from the get-go. 00:11:41.639 --> 00:11:42.620 They've probably heard of David. 00:11:42.679 --> 00:11:43.860 They've battled David before. 00:11:43.860 --> 00:11:45.820 They know he's a mighty warrior, 00:11:45.820 --> 00:11:47.820 so they want to make sure he's dethroned 00:11:47.820 --> 00:11:50.600 so they can continue ruling over Israel. 00:11:51.560 --> 00:11:53.539 But we know that God delivers the Philistines 00:11:53.539 --> 00:11:54.980 into the hands of Israel, 00:11:55.259 --> 00:11:56.659 and the Philistines are defeated. 00:11:57.720 --> 00:11:58.519 And after this victory, 00:11:58.580 --> 00:11:59.879 the first thing that David wants to do 00:11:59.879 --> 00:12:02.100 is to bring this Ark to Jerusalem. 00:12:03.340 --> 00:12:09.180 And it's noteworthy to recognize his desire here, 00:12:09.240 --> 00:12:10.620 because it very well could have been 00:12:10.620 --> 00:12:12.460 David knew he was going to be king for a while. 00:12:12.460 --> 00:12:14.700 He recognized that Saul wasn't a good king, 00:12:14.780 --> 00:12:16.639 and now he's finally made king. 00:12:16.840 --> 00:12:18.560 He has secured his first victory. 00:12:18.900 --> 00:12:20.320 He's the one who's the good leader. 00:12:20.480 --> 00:12:22.340 He's the one that can protect Israel. 00:12:23.240 --> 00:12:24.920 Rather than worrying about the Ark of the Covenant, 00:12:24.980 --> 00:12:25.780 he could have been worrying about 00:12:25.780 --> 00:12:27.080 having a parade for himself 00:12:27.080 --> 00:12:29.800 to return to his own capital. 00:12:30.740 --> 00:12:32.060 But instead, we see that he does something 00:12:32.060 --> 00:12:33.040 very different here. 00:12:33.960 --> 00:12:36.480 Instead, he desires the presence of God. 00:12:36.600 --> 00:12:38.519 He assembles 30,000 men 00:12:38.519 --> 00:12:39.960 from every corner of the kingdom, 00:12:39.960 --> 00:12:42.080 commanders, soldiers, priests, farmers, 00:12:42.200 --> 00:12:43.780 to form this procession 00:12:43.780 --> 00:12:45.860 to retrieve the Ark of the Covenant 00:12:45.860 --> 00:12:47.120 and bring it back to Jerusalem. 00:12:47.980 --> 00:12:49.259 Because he recognizes here 00:12:49.259 --> 00:12:50.940 that even though he is the king, 00:12:51.019 --> 00:12:52.780 the people of Israel need to recognize 00:12:52.780 --> 00:12:54.220 he is only an earthly king. 00:12:54.320 --> 00:12:55.860 He is not the true king. 00:12:57.139 --> 00:12:58.940 It is Israel who needs a true king. 00:12:59.019 --> 00:13:01.240 For his kingship to succeed 00:13:01.240 --> 00:13:02.800 is wholly dependent 00:13:02.800 --> 00:13:05.639 on the presence of the almighty king. 00:13:05.639 --> 00:13:08.559 And so this stands in a stark contrast 00:13:08.559 --> 00:13:09.379 from King Saul, 00:13:09.519 --> 00:13:11.639 who didn't care about the presence of God, 00:13:11.720 --> 00:13:14.379 who only worried about his own glory. 00:13:15.240 --> 00:13:16.159 But what we see here 00:13:16.159 --> 00:13:18.080 is the Ark actually represents 00:13:18.080 --> 00:13:19.699 the throne of God. 00:13:20.600 --> 00:13:22.240 And for the past 20 years, 00:13:22.379 --> 00:13:23.899 it's basically been in storage. 00:13:25.059 --> 00:13:26.939 David wants to return this Ark 00:13:26.939 --> 00:13:28.980 that it may be the center of worship, 00:13:29.080 --> 00:13:30.720 that the people of God may understand 00:13:30.720 --> 00:13:33.819 that God desires to dwell among them. 00:13:33.820 --> 00:13:36.300 And so we see this actually 00:13:36.300 --> 00:13:38.500 in, again, this Old Testament law. 00:13:38.820 --> 00:13:40.040 Because in Numbers 2, 00:13:40.140 --> 00:13:41.140 God gives instructions 00:13:41.140 --> 00:13:44.020 for where this Ark is to be kept. 00:13:44.840 --> 00:13:46.020 And even how the people 00:13:46.020 --> 00:13:47.600 are to camp around the tabernacle. 00:13:47.940 --> 00:13:49.500 The tabernacle was to be set up 00:13:49.500 --> 00:13:51.900 in the middle of the nation of Israel 00:13:51.900 --> 00:13:54.560 with three tribes on every side. 00:13:55.220 --> 00:13:56.760 And in the middle of this tabernacle 00:13:56.760 --> 00:13:58.220 was the Holy of Holies. 00:13:58.360 --> 00:14:00.140 And in the middle of this Holy of Holies 00:14:00.140 --> 00:14:01.880 was the Ark of the Covenant. 00:14:01.879 --> 00:14:04.299 It meant to symbolize 00:14:04.299 --> 00:14:05.639 the centrality of God 00:14:05.639 --> 00:14:06.320 among his people. 00:14:07.100 --> 00:14:07.919 This is what David 00:14:07.919 --> 00:14:09.399 wanted to return to. 00:14:10.980 --> 00:14:12.179 I'm going to ask why. 00:14:12.860 --> 00:14:14.500 Why does David have this urge? 00:14:14.580 --> 00:14:16.379 Well, this is really a desire 00:14:16.379 --> 00:14:17.559 that goes back to the very 00:14:17.559 --> 00:14:18.879 beginning of time, 00:14:18.939 --> 00:14:19.539 to creation. 00:14:20.460 --> 00:14:21.539 See, even at the fall, 00:14:21.659 --> 00:14:22.879 when sin entered the world 00:14:22.879 --> 00:14:23.820 through Adam and Eve, 00:14:24.340 --> 00:14:26.240 we've had this ongoing struggle. 00:14:26.240 --> 00:14:29.060 How do we return to the presence 00:14:29.060 --> 00:14:29.740 of the Lord? 00:14:29.860 --> 00:14:31.019 How do we
