00:02:43.679 According to a study of college students conducted in 2007, the average person studied spoke approximately 16,000 words per day. 00:02:44.479 --> 00:02:47.419 Male or female, there was not a significant difference based on gender. 00:02:47.419 --> 00:02:54.239 The range was 800 words for the least talkative person to 47,000 words for the most talkative person. 00:02:55.759 --> 00:02:59.139 But you know, that's only the number of words that come out of our mouths. 00:03:00.279 --> 00:03:05.459 I think today, many of us probably type at least as much as we talk. 00:03:06.219 --> 00:03:08.979 And we read at least as much as we hear. 00:03:08.979 --> 00:03:38.959 Words are everywhere. 00:03:38.979 --> 00:03:40.739 Many of things that we know they'll like to hear. 00:03:41.739 --> 00:03:49.199 Or when somebody offends us, we might tell them off or vent to another friend or post our frustrations on Facebook. 00:03:49.459 --> 00:03:53.959 Or when we're uncomfortable or anxious, we complain and whine. 00:03:54.919 --> 00:03:58.679 When we have a strong opinion or a strong reaction to something, we want to make it known. 00:03:59.399 --> 00:04:04.599 And most of the time, I think we just say what we want to say and go on with our lives. 00:04:04.599 --> 00:04:15.000 I mean, if I really did speak 16,000 words yesterday, or even half or a quarter of that amount, how many of those do I remember today? 00:04:17.480 --> 00:04:20.360 We're often careless in how we speak. 00:04:20.360 --> 00:04:28.520 You know, I think we also know that words spoken to us can stay with us for a long time. 00:04:29.639 --> 00:04:33.660 When I was in elementary school, I remember hearing that old rhyme, 00:04:34.040 --> 00:04:37.580 sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. 00:04:37.579 --> 00:04:43.959 Now, perhaps that statement was meant to express courage and resilience in the face of threats or insults. 00:04:44.060 --> 00:04:50.759 And courage and resilience are good qualities to cultivate, but it's simply not true to say that words will never hurt. 00:04:53.459 --> 00:04:56.019 Doug Moo, commenting on this very passage, 00:04:56.019 --> 00:04:57.599 I think in James, I think rightly said, 00:04:57.680 --> 00:05:04.079 far easier to heal are the wounds caused by sticks and stones than the damage caused by words. 00:05:05.299 --> 00:05:07.359 I think in most cases that is true. 00:05:08.899 --> 00:05:12.779 The passage we're looking at this morning tells us that our words matter. 00:05:13.919 --> 00:05:15.000 They matter a lot. 00:05:16.339 --> 00:05:18.319 And so we'll look at this passage under three headings. 00:05:18.319 --> 00:05:24.839 First, the power of our words in verses 1 through verse 5, the first half of verse 5. 00:05:24.839 --> 00:05:29.159 And second, the danger of our words from second half of verse 5 to verse 8. 00:05:30.039 --> 00:05:34.299 And third, the inconsistency of our words in verses 9 to 12. 00:05:34.399 --> 00:05:38.699 So the power of our words, the danger of our words, and the inconsistency of our words. 00:05:39.179 --> 00:05:41.079 First, the power of our words. 00:05:42.559 --> 00:05:49.639 Now, James begins this section in verse 1 with a warning that would have immediately caught his hearer's attention. 00:05:50.500 --> 00:05:53.239 Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers. 00:05:53.240 --> 00:05:59.639 Now, imagine a doctor speaking to a class of prospective medical school students 00:05:59.639 --> 00:06:04.199 and opening his talk by saying, not many of you should become physicians. 00:06:06.480 --> 00:06:09.879 Or, you know, I thought if I was speaking to a group of seminary students, 00:06:09.879 --> 00:06:12.360 and if I said, not many of you should become pastors. 00:06:14.139 --> 00:06:14.579 Right? 00:06:14.660 --> 00:06:16.879 You might be surprised to hear things like that. 00:06:17.920 --> 00:06:18.340 Right? 00:06:18.339 --> 00:06:22.779 Verse 1 is not quite what you'd expect to hear from someone who is himself a teacher. 00:06:22.939 --> 00:06:23.959 James says we, right? 00:06:24.019 --> 00:06:25.639 He identifies himself as a teacher. 00:06:26.019 --> 00:06:28.139 He's talking about teachers in the church particularly. 00:06:29.079 --> 00:06:31.779 You might expect James to give more of a recruiting pitch. 00:06:31.839 --> 00:06:32.959 We need more teachers. 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:35.319 You should consider this. 00:06:36.559 --> 00:06:38.939 But James actually felt the need to give a warning 00:06:38.939 --> 00:06:43.480 to those who are aspiring to teach and lead in the Christian church. 00:06:44.899 --> 00:06:48.939 You see, many of the people James was writing to were poor. 00:06:49.459 --> 00:06:50.639 They were being persecuted. 00:06:51.279 --> 00:06:54.620 They were being mistreated by their wealthy landlords and bosses. 00:06:55.279 --> 00:06:57.620 And so the church was one of the few places 00:06:57.620 --> 00:07:00.860 where they could potentially get some respect. 00:07:00.860 --> 00:07:05.280 where they might rise to a position of honor and even authority. 00:07:05.900 --> 00:07:06.000 Right? 00:07:06.220 --> 00:07:09.540 In their society, maybe 10% of people could read and write. 00:07:10.520 --> 00:07:14.560 And so teachers who could read and write and speak in public, 00:07:14.819 --> 00:07:17.699 especially in the Jewish context, were highly regarded. 00:07:19.780 --> 00:07:21.699 But James wanted to remind them, 00:07:21.780 --> 00:07:26.040 being a teacher in the church is not primarily a high honor to enjoy. 00:07:26.759 --> 00:07:30.420 It's primarily a high responsibility to steward. 00:07:30.860 --> 00:07:36.740 You see, what is the highest honor in the church of Jesus Christ? 00:07:38.720 --> 00:07:40.699 The highest honor in the church of Jesus Christ 00:07:40.699 --> 00:07:42.500 is not standing up at the pulpit, 00:07:42.819 --> 00:07:45.060 being a pastor, being a recognized leader. 00:07:45.300 --> 00:07:49.600 The highest honor in the church belongs to every single believer in Jesus Christ. 00:07:50.180 --> 00:07:52.340 It's through your connection to Christ, 00:07:52.500 --> 00:07:56.560 you are a child of God and an heir of his heavenly kingdom. 00:07:56.560 --> 00:08:02.660 That is the highest honor you can aspire to or experience anywhere. 00:08:03.980 --> 00:08:06.500 To be a child of the king of the universe. 00:08:06.920 --> 00:08:09.180 To belong to him now and forever. 00:08:10.120 --> 00:08:13.639 There's no higher privilege and honor available to human beings anywhere. 00:08:13.639 --> 00:08:17.659 And so James is reminding us, 00:08:17.759 --> 00:08:21.539 if you're dissatisfied with the honor of being a child of God, 00:08:21.620 --> 00:08:22.819 don't become a church leader. 00:08:23.019 --> 00:08:25.259 Because you won't help yourself or anybody else. 00:08:27.139 --> 00:08:30.240 James says, no, teaching in the church is a high responsibility. 00:08:30.659 --> 00:08:33.059 We who teach will be held to a higher standard. 00:08:33.059 --> 00:08:36.079 Because we talk a lot. 00:08:37.839 --> 00:08:39.259 And lots of people are listening. 00:08:41.639 --> 00:08:43.500 We all fall short in many ways, 00:08:43.619 --> 00:08:44.919 but when lots of people are listening 00:08:44.919 --> 00:08:47.099 and when you're speaking to a lot of people, 00:08:47.939 --> 00:08:49.859 you have to be doubly careful. 00:08:53.399 --> 00:08:56.539 James says in this chapter that we who teach must be extra careful 00:08:56.539 --> 00:08:58.759 both about what we say and about how we live. 00:08:58.819 --> 00:09:00.500 If you notice, the first half of this chapter 00:09:00.500 --> 00:09:03.919 that we're looking at today focuses on what we say. 00:09:04.960 --> 00:09:06.480 The second half of this chapter, 00:09:06.600 --> 00:09:07.620 what we'll look at next week, 00:09:07.700 --> 00:09:08.659 starting at verse 13, 00:09:08.779 --> 00:09:10.039 focuses on how we live. 00:09:10.960 --> 00:09:11.120 Right? 00:09:11.220 --> 00:09:14.179 Who is wise and understanding among you by his good conduct, 00:09:14.519 --> 00:09:17.600 let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 00:09:20.059 --> 00:09:22.519 Now, you could take everything that James says 00:09:22.519 --> 00:09:23.600 in verses 1 to 12 00:09:23.600 --> 00:09:26.480 and apply it specifically to teachers and leaders in the church. 00:09:26.580 --> 00:09:27.960 That would be a fruitful exercise 00:09:27.960 --> 00:09:30.480 for those of us who are teachers and leaders in the church 00:09:30.480 --> 00:09:33.060 but I think James is making a more general point. 00:09:33.240 --> 00:09:33.320 Right? 00:09:33.340 --> 00:09:34.860 He starts with a specific warning 00:09:34.860 --> 00:09:37.560 and then he moves to a more general point 00:09:37.560 --> 00:09:40.259 that has a broad application to all of us. 00:09:42.200 --> 00:09:42.659 Right? 00:09:42.759 --> 00:09:44.000 And he begins by saying, 00:09:44.200 --> 00:09:46.240 our words have power. 00:09:47.940 --> 00:09:51.360 Look at the two images he uses in verses 3 and 4. 00:09:51.360 --> 00:09:53.779 First, verse 3. 00:09:53.879 --> 00:09:56.639 A small bit in the horse's mouth 00:09:56.639 --> 00:10:02.399 is the means by which a rider guides the whole body of the horse. 00:10:03.480 --> 00:10:04.500 And then verse 4. 00:10:04.560 --> 00:10:08.620 A small rudder is the means by which the pilot 00:10:08.620 --> 00:10:11.100 or the captain guides a large ship. 00:10:12.500 --> 00:10:13.560 So in other words, 00:10:13.820 --> 00:10:15.060 James is saying the tongue 00:10:15.060 --> 00:10:19.220 sets the pace for the rest of the body. 00:10:19.220 --> 00:10:23.540 If we learn to bridle our tongue, 00:10:24.180 --> 00:10:26.420 control our tongue, 00:10:26.480 --> 00:10:29.180 then we can also learn to exercise self-control 00:10:29.180 --> 00:10:32.779 and discipline over the other parts of our body. 00:10:33.639 --> 00:10:36.220 If we don't bridle our tongue, 00:10:36.639 00:10:53.299 --> 00:10:53.559 right? 00:10:53.799 --> 00:10:56.419 Tiny thing compared to a large ship 00:10:56.419 --> 00:11:01.179 has effects that are vastly disproportionate to its size. 00:11:01.299 --> 00:11:03.220 Tiny but mighty, we might say. 00:11:04.600 --> 00:11:04.860 Right? 00:11:04.860 --> 00:11:05.700 And James says, 00:11:05.800 --> 00:11:07.740 if this is true of horses and boats, 00:11:07.860 --> 00:11:10.259 how much more is it true of human beings? 00:11:10.379 --> 00:11:12.940 So also the tongue is a small member, 00:11:13.440 --> 00:11:16.019 yet it boasts of great things. 00:11:16.700 --> 00:11:19.779 Now, when James talks about boasting in verse 5, 00:11:20.379 --> 00:11:24.080 he's not only referring to bad kinds of speech. 00:11:25.080 --> 00:11:26.440 Later in chapter 4, 00:11:26.860 --> 00:11:29.019 James will refer to boasting in arrogance, 00:11:29.019 --> 00:11:30.399 which he says is evil. 00:11:30.399 --> 00:11:32.639 But already in chapter 1, 00:11:32.699 --> 00:11:33.860 chapter 1 verse 9, 00:11:34.079 --> 00:11:36.480 he's talked about boasting in humility. 00:11:36.699 --> 00:11:37.199 So he says, 00:11:37.399 --> 00:11:39.439 let the lowly brother or sister 00:11:39.439 --> 00:11:42.779 boast in their exaltation in Christ. 00:11:42.879 --> 00:11:43.399 In other words, 00:11:43.459 --> 00:11:43.939 as Christians, 00:11:44.079 --> 00:11:46.539 we can boast about what God has done for us. 00:11:47.419 --> 00:11:48.860 How he's forgiven our sins 00:11:48.860 --> 00:11:50.039 and renewed our minds 00:11:50.039 --> 00:11:52.059 and lifted us out of the pit of despair 00:11:52.059 --> 00:11:54.600 and given us real and lasting hope. 00:11:54.819 --> 00:11:55.559 We can rejoice 00:11:55.559 --> 00:11:57.600 even when we're beaten down by trials 00:11:57.600 --> 00:12:00.639 because by God's grace, 00:12:00.720 --> 00:12:02.560 we're still walking with Jesus 00:12:02.560 --> 00:12:05.639 and he is walking with us doesn't begin by speaking 00:12:25.799 --> 00:12:27.519 about the negative potential of the tongue. 00:12:27.620 --> 00:12:30.259 He reminds us of the positive potential of the tongue. 00:12:31.219 --> 00:12:33.719 It has great potential for positive good. 00:12:35.199 --> 00:12:35.659 Right? 00:12:35.719 --> 00:12:37.319 That's why James talks about guiding 00:12:37.319 --> 00:12:39.139 or bridling our tongue, 00:12:39.240 --> 00:12:41.219 not just silencing our tongue. 00:12:42.500 --> 00:12:42.939 Right? 00:12:43.000 --> 00:12:43.899 Already in chapter 1, 00:12:43.979 --> 00:12:45.859 James said we should be quick to listen 00:12:45.859 --> 00:12:47.620 and slow to speak 00:12:47.620 --> 00:12:48.959 and slow to anger, 00:12:49.099 --> 00:12:50.019 but that does mean 00:12:50.019 --> 00:12:51.479 that there is a time to speak 00:12:51.479 --> 00:12:53.379 and that there is a time to be angry. 00:12:53.379 --> 00:12:56.799 Now, for example, 00:12:58.000 --> 00:13:01.600 let's say if you're having conflict or tension 00:13:01.600 --> 00:13:04.759 in marriage or some other close relationship. 00:13:06.039 --> 00:13:07.080 And by the way, 00:13:07.240 --> 00:13:07.879 let me just say, 00:13:08.080 --> 00:13:09.100 these last few months 00:13:09.100 --> 00:13:12.120 have brought out all kinds of conflict and tension 00:13:12.120 --> 00:13:13.379 in all kinds of relationships. 00:13:14.059 --> 00:13:16.559 So if you're feeling that somewhere or other, 00:13:16.899 --> 00:13:17.580 you're not alone. 00:13:17.580 --> 00:13:21.940 But the solution to conflict and tension 00:13:21.940 --> 00:13:24.920 is not to just stop talking to each other. 00:13:25.740 --> 00:13:25.879 Right? 00:13:25.940 --> 00:13:27.840 Especially within a family relationship it's how you deal with it 00:14:06.740 --> 00:14:08.620 that will either strengthen 00:14:08.620 --> 00:14:11.079 or strain your marriage. 00:14:11.080 --> 00:14:13.800 You see, conflict or tension 00:14:13.800 --> 00:14:14.660 can be an opportunity 00:14:14.660 --> 00:14:16.900 to learn to communicate with our words 00:14:16.900 --> 00:14:19.680 and to grow together as a result. 00:14:20.900 --> 00:14:22.660 And the book of Proverbs talks about 00:14:22.660 --> 00:14:24.960 how wise words can bring healing 00:14:24.960 --> 00:14:25.940 and restoration 00:14:25.940 --> 00:14:27.220 where there's been hurt 00:14:27.220 --> 00:14:29.120 and division and confusion. 00:14:30.560 --> 00:14:31.940 So here's a few Proverbs 00:14:31.940 --> 00:14:32.720 from the book of Proverbs. 00:14:32.840 --> 00:14:35.000 The tongue of the wise brings healing. 00:14:37.020 --> 00:14:40.020 An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips. 00:14:41.080 --> 00:14:43.540 Gracious words are a honeycomb, 00:14:44.020 --> 00:14:45.379 sweet to the soul 00:14:45.379 --> 00:14:46.759 and healing to the bones. 00:14:47.840 --> 00:14:49.759 Like an ornament of fine gold 00:14:49.759 --> 00:14:51.740 is the rebuke of a wise judge 00:14:51.740 --> 00:14:53.000 to a listening ear. 00:14:54.480 --> 00:14:56.840 With patience, a ruler may be persuaded 00:14:56.840 --> 00:14:59.080 and a soft tongue will 00:15:29.640 emphasizes the danger of our words. 00:15:29.639 --> 00:15:32.360 James continues with the contrast 00:15:32.360 --> 00:15:33.679 of small things 00:15:33.679 --> 00:15:35.919 that have big effects. 00:15:37.299 --> 00:15:38.899 But then he introduces 00:15:38.899 --> 00:15:40.819 a different image 00:15:40.819 --> 00:15:42.139 in the second half of verse five. 00:15:42.220 --> 00:16:24.079 and his speech 00:16:24.079 --> 00:16:25.899 is like a scorching fire. 00:16:27.219 --> 00:16:28.399 A dishonest person 00:16:28.399 --> 00:16:29.379 spreads strife 00:16:29.379 --> 00:16:30.019 and a gossip 00:16:30.019 --> 00:16:31.699 separates close friends. 00:16:34.059 --> 00:16:35.120 Evildoers are trapped 00:16:35.120 --> 00:16:36.360 by their sinful talk. 00:16:36.459
