Titus. 00:00:17.420 --> 00:00:21.940 And now as we head toward the summer months, we're looking at Paul's second letter to Timothy. 00:00:22.820 --> 00:00:28.080 And I am so looking forward to --> 00:01:05.739 So I want to take a few minutes just to explain what the letter of 2 Timothy is. 00:01:05.840 --> 00:01:06.859 Who wrote this letter? 00:01:07.700 --> 00:01:09.539 What kind of writing is this? 00:01:09.780 --> 00:01:12.980 And where does it fit into the bigger story of the Bible? 00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:19.180 So last week we heard about how Jesus died and rose again. 00:01:19.180 --> 00:01:24.140 We heard about how he appeared to his followers over a period of 40 days. 00:01:24.940 --> 00:01:26.900 And then was taken up into heaven. 00:01:27.660 --> 00:01:33.540 We heard last Sunday about how Jesus poured out the Holy Spirit upon his apostles. 00:01:34.100 --> 00:01:36.400 Enabling them to speak on his behalf. 00:01:36.400 --> 00:01:48.900 And we heard about how the apostle Peter proclaimed his very first sermon to a crowd in Jerusalem with about 3,000 people putting their trust in Jesus and being baptized. 00:01:49.520 --> 00:01:53.400 We usually speak about that day as the day the church was born. 00:01:53.400 --> 00:02:01.520 And Peter and the other apostles from that day on they kept proclaiming Jesus to the people more and more. 00:02:02.440 --> midst of all this there was a man named Saul. 00:02:31.719 --> 00:02:33.599 Saul was one of the Pharisees. 00:02:34.219 --> 00:02:36.659 He was one of those religious leader types. 00:02:37.619 --> 00:02:41.339 And he himself was a persecutor of the church of Jesus. 00:02:41.340 --> 00:02:50.520 And Luke tells us in the book of Acts about how Jesus himself from heaven stopped Paul in his tracks on the road to Damascus. 00:02:51.560 --> 00:02:54.680 And Jesus revealed himself to Saul. 00:02:55.420 --> 00:02:57.620 And Saul himself became a believer. 00:02:57.819 --> 00:03:02.159 And even more Jesus chose Saul to be one of his apostles. 00:03:02.379 --> 00:03:03.759 One of his spokesmen. 00:03:04.480 --> 00:03:08.460 And Jesus gave Saul who after that point on he went by Paul. 00:03:09.039 --> 00:03:11.039 Jesus gave Paul a task. 00:03:11.340 --> 00:03:18.420 And that task was to go to all of the non-Jewish nations around the Mediterranean Sea. 00:03:18.420 --> 00:03:20.480 Was kind of the area that he operated in. 00:03:20.640 --> 00:03:22.080 And to tell them about Jesus. 00:03:22.560 --> 00:03:24.159 And the salvation that he offers. 00:03:25.319 --> 00:03:26.439 And so Paul did 00:03:43.859 And local churches were born. 00:03:44.359 --> 00:03:46.319 All around the Mediterranean Sea. 00:03:47.740 --> 00:03:49.900 Well in one of these cities Paul came to. 00:03:51.379 --> 00:03:54.139 He came to a place where there was a young man named Timothy. 00:03:55.159 --> 00:03:57.000 And Timothy's mother was a Jew. 00:03:57.639 --> 00:03:59.780 And his father was a Greek. 00:03:59.780 --> 00:04:03.860 But his mother raised him. 00:04:04.199 --> 00:04:06.360 Teaching him about the Lord. 00:04:07.120 --> 00:04:10.520 And so when Paul and Barnabas came to Timothy's city. 00:04:19.060 And according to Luke. 00:04:19.120 --> 00:04:20.699 Timothy grew in his faith. 00:04:20.759 --> 00:04:21.660 And he matured. 00:04:21.660 --> 00:04:25.640 To the point that the other Christians in that little church regarded him very highly. 00:04:26.700 --> 00:04:30.700 And so Paul actually took Timothy on as his co-worker. 00:04:31.360 --> 00:04:33.160 And they traveled
