Jesus has just been warning them about how 00:00:32.380 --> 00:00:36.520 things are going to get very difficult for them. He's told them that the world will hate 00:00:36.520 --> 00:00:43.200 them, that they will be persecuted. But even though Jesus is about to leave them, they will 00:00:43.200 --> 00:00:50.620 not be alone. Jesus has promised to send the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, and the Spirit, 00:00:50.619 --> 00:00:57.939 he says, will testify to the world about Jesus through the disciples. So let's pick up this 00:00:57.939 --> 00:01:05.039 conversation that Jesus was having with them that night, starting in verse 6. This is Jesus 00:01:05.039 --> 00:01:12.219 talking to them. He said, rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things. 00:01:13.039 --> 00:01:19.920 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, 00:01:19.920 --> 00:01:29.900 the advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove 00:01:29.900 --> 00:01:40.240 the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment. About sin, because 00:01:40.240 --> 00:01:47.680 people do not believe in me. About righteousness, because I am going to the Father where you can 00:01:47.680 --> 00:01:54.760 see me no longer. These words of Jesus are all about 00:02:41.039 --> 00:02:48.019 the Spirit, as Jesus calls him, the Spirit of truth. And Jesus tells his disciples here three things 00:02:48.019 --> 00:02:57.139 that the Spirit will do when he comes. The Spirit of truth will convict the world, that's verses 8 to 11. 00:02:57.759 --> 00:03:07.180 He will guide them, that's the apostles, into all the truth, verses 12 and 13. And he will glorify me, 00:03:07.180 --> 00:03:15.640 says Jesus, verses 14 to 15. So let's look at each of these briefly this morning. Starting with the first 00:03:15.640 --> 00:03:24.719 one, Jesus says that the Spirit of truth will convict the world. When he comes, he will prove the world to 00:03:24.719 --> 00:03:33.740 be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment. About sin, because people do not believe in me. 00:03:33.740 --> 00:03:41.439 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer. And about 00:03:41.439 --> 00:03:49.560 judgment, because the Prince of this world now stands condemned. Now these are some tricky verses 00:03:49.560 --> 00:03:54.800 here. You may notice in your own Bible some differences to the translation that's on the 00:03:54.800 --> 00:04:00.540 screen. Most translations say he will convict the world. A couple say he will prove the world wrong 00:04:00.539 --> 00:04:05.979 about. And Jesus says there are three things that the Spirit will convict the world about. 00:04:07.799 --> 00:04:17.939 Sin, righteousness, and judgment. Now this is where it gets tricky. In English, when we use that word 00:04:17.939 --> 00:04:24.399 convict, like being convicted of something, usually what comes after is a negative word, 00:04:24.399 --> 00:04:34.019 like fault, convicted of sin, convicted of a crime, convicted of perjury, convicted of murder, 00:04:34.099 --> 00:04:43.060 you get the idea. But it seems that the way Jesus uses this word, in his language, it's a little more 00:04:43.060 --> 00:04:52.939 flexible. It seems to carry this idea of uncovering, exposing, bringing to light. And it can even be used 00:04:52.939 --> 00:04:59.980 about positive things, like righteousness, or about an outcome, or a verdict, like judgment. 00:05:01.719 --> 00:05:08.720 Being convicted of sin makes good sense to us. But these other ideas may sound strange to our ears. 00:05:08.899 --> 00:05:16.319 So I want to start by acknowledging that there are at least a dozen different ideas about what Jesus 00:05:16.319 --> 00:05:24.319 meant when he said these words. I read one very good commentator who listed off five different views 00:05:24.319 --> 00:05:32.040 on just these two verses, three verses. And he didn't like any of those five, so he offered his own sixth 00:05:32.040 --> 00:05:39.219 idea. So these have been talked about a lot. The challenge here is that Jesus has a kind of logic 00:05:39.220 --> 00:05:46.840 in these words that is maybe not as clear or apparent to us today, what he's talking about. 00:05:46.960 --> 00:05:53.060 So what do we do with this? Well, I want to start just by pointing out what is clear from these verses, 00:05:53.060 --> 00:06:01.020 and then offer a best guess on some of the stuff that's not so clear. And let's start with the clear. 00:06:01.760 --> 00:06:08.480 It's pretty obvious, I think, what it means to convict the world about sin. Most of you have probably 00:06:08.480 --> 00:06:15.819 heard that language before. Jesus says that the Spirit will do that. He will expose. He will bring 00:06:15.819 --> 00:06:25.600 to light the sin of the world. He will help the world see its guiltiness before God. So that's very 00:06:25.600 --> 00:06:33.360 clear. Now what else is clear here? If we look carefully at these three clauses that because, because, 00:06:33.360 --> 00:06:41.240 because, there are a few more things that are clear. Jesus says, as a statement in the first clause there, 00:06:42.319 --> 00:06:48.660 people, that is the people of the world, do not believe in him. And it's kind of framed as a 00:06:48.660 --> 00:06:55.240 problem. So that's, that much is clear. The world does not believe in Jesus, and this is a problem. 00:06:55.240 --> 00:07:05.000 Another thing that's clear, Jesus says again, that he is going to the Father. He is about to leave the 00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:10.660 disciples. They won't see him anymore. And this is clear. Jesus has said this a few times already 00:07:10.660 --> 00:07:18.240 in this same evening to the disciples. Finally, in the third clause there, Jesus says that the prince 00:07:18.240 --> 00:07:24.120 or ruler of this world now stands condemned. And pretty much everybody agrees that this is a 00:07:24.120 --> 00:07:33.060 reference to Satan, to the devil, and how his fate is already sealed. He is guilty. He is liable to 00:07:33.060 --> 00:07:40.720 judgment, though we know from other passages that his punishment hasn't been executed on him yet. 00:07:40.720 --> 00:07:48.940 But the verdict is sealed. So that's what's clear here. The spirit, when he comes, he will convict the 00:07:48.940 --> 00:07:57.800 world of sin. The world does not believe in Jesus, and Jesus is going to the Father, and the ruler of 00:07:57.800 --> 00:08:07.020 this world's judgment is sure. So now we get to the less clear part here. And again, these things have 00:08:07.019 --> 00:08:13.479 been variously interpreted, so what I'm about to say, I want you to know, is my opinion and not Scripture. 00:08:14.740 --> 00:08:21.240 What does it mean that the Spirit will convict the world about righteousness? I don't think this is a 00:08:21.240 --> 00:08:28.659 reference to the righteousness of Jesus. I think it's a reference to the world's righteousness. Just like he 00:08:28.659 --> 00:08:37.000 will convict the world about its sin, he will convict the world about its righteousness. Namely, the lack of 00:08:37.019 --> 00:08:48.120 righteousness. The world thinks it has righteousness. It's consistently characterized by that ominous 00:08:48.120 --> 00:08:56.899 statement at the end of the book of Judges. Everyone does what is right in their own eyes. But the truth, 00:08:57.019 --> 00:09:04.360 I think, that the Spirit has come to expose is that we are not righteous. We are not as good as we think 00:09:04.360 --> 00:09:15.460 we are. In the words of Isaiah, the prophet, all our righteousness is as filthy rags. When it comes to 00:09:15.460 --> 00:09:23.259 righteousness, we are deficient. We are lacking it. So the Spirit will convict the world concerning sin 00:09:23.259 --> 00:09:31.700 and concerning righteousness, our lack of it, and concerning judgment. What does it mean that the 00:09:31.700 --> 00:09:37.640 Spirit will convict the world concerning judgment? I think it means very simply that he will expose 00:09:37.640 --> 00:09:46.480 the reality that we are deserving of judgment, just like the devil is deserving of judgment. 00:09:47.740 --> 00:09:54.340 So that's my take on these less clear parts of what Jesus said. And there is a sort of logic in here 00:09:54.340 --> 00:10:03.180 that I haven't really dug into too much. Jesus says that the Spirit will convict the world concerning sin. 00:10:03.680 --> 00:10:10.860 Why? Because they do not believe in him. We notice that Jesus doesn't say why the world doesn't believe 00:10:10.860 --> 00:10:18.820 in him. Is this people who have already heard the message of Jesus and are rejecting it? Or is this people 00:10:18.820 --> 00:10:27.000 who have never heard about Jesus? Jesus doesn't say? And so we kind of have to guess at the reason. 00:10:27.160 --> 00:10:32.340 Perhaps the reason the Spirit convicts them of sin is because they are not believers in Jesus 00:10:32.340 --> 00:10:41.740 as they should be. And so the Spirit presses on them. He exposes our guilt. He helps us to see 00:10:41.740 --> 00:10:51.860 our need for Jesus, the Savior, for forgiveness. Jesus also says that the Spirit will convict the world 00:10:51.860 --> 00:10:59.860 concerning righteousness because I am going to the Father, he says, and you will see me no more. 00:11:00.919 --> 00:11:07.419 This is kind of an unexpected reason. The first reason had to do with the world and them not believing. 00:11:07.419 --> 00:11:13.120 But this second reason has to do with Jesus and him not being here on earth anymore. 00:11:14.199 --> 00:11:24.879 If I'm reading it right, Jesus has up until now been doing that convicting of sin and righteousness, 00:11:25.339 --> 00:11:31.819 the lack of it, and judgment. Think back over what Jesus has been saying to the people. 00:11:31.820 --> 00:11:39.600 He's been exposing their guilt. He's been putting the light on the sin, 00:11:39.960 --> 00:11:44.520 not just of the religious leaders, but also of the people and calling them to repent. 00:11:46.220 --> 00:11:52.460 And so I think that Jesus is saying that there is a need for that convicting work to continue. 00:11:52.820 --> 00:11:59.420 Jesus, the light that exposes, is about to leave the world. And so the Spirit will come 00:11:59.419 --> 00:12:07.339 and continue that work that Jesus has been doing, that work of convicting. So that's my take on this passage. 00:12:08.379 --> 00:12:14.500 Jesus is telling the disciples that the Spirit of truth, when he comes, he will convict, 00:12:14.500 --> 00:12:21.039 he will expose, he will shine the light on the reality that we are all guilty before God, 00:12:21.539 --> 00:12:27.179 that we lack righteousness, and that we are deserving of judgment. 00:12:29.419 --> 00:12:36.299 And I believe that this convicting is something that the Spirit of God continues to do today in our world. 00:12:37.120 --> 00:12:41.759 While Jesus was here, he did that important work of the Father. 00:12:42.860 --> 00:12:46.839 And while Jesus is away, the Spirit continues it. 00:12:47.639 --> 00:12:53.019 And if you read carefully the New Testament letters and how the churches got started, 00:12:53.019 --> 00:12:57.720 you can see there in a few places that the credit is given to God's Spirit 00:12:57.720 --> 00:13:04.699 when someone comes to their senses and becomes aware of their sin and their need for Jesus. 00:13:05.220 --> 00:13:10.899 The Spirit is the one that does that work in us, bringing the words of God to bear on our hearts. 00:13:10.899 --> 00:13:22.259 So I want to ask
