Because there is not an emotion which anyone can be conscious of that is not here represented as in a mirror. 00:23:09.839 --> 00:23:29.699 The Holy Spirit has here drawn all the griefs, sorrows, fears, doubts, hopes, cares, perplexities with which the minds of men are agitated. 00:23:29.700 --> 00:23:33.700 Quite a profound statement. 00:23:33.700 --> 00:23:53.700 And yet one I'm sure that we can all agree that we have experienced in a measure as we ourselves see the preciousness of the Psalms 00:23:53.700 --> 00:24:01.700 and how they relate and how they relate and how they are a source of comfort to us in experiences that we pass through. 00:24:01.700 --> 00:24:09.700 And for that reason, Calvin gave it that remarkable title, An Anatomy of the Soul. 00:24:09.700 --> 00:24:21.700 There are bookshops that have vast, vast amounts of titles on the anatomy of the body. 00:24:21.700 --> 00:24:31.700 But here we have the only book for their greatest need, that is the anatomy of the soul. 00:24:31.700 --> 00:24:39.700 And so looking at it with that as our backdrop, we come to this great psalm that we have here. 00:24:39.700 --> 00:24:45.700 And at the very outset you may notice something if the designation is given in your Bible, 00:24:45.700 --> 00:24:51.700 that not only is it a psalm, but it is also a prayer. 00:24:51.700 --> 00:24:55.700 A prayer of David. 00:24:55.700 --> 00:25:07.700 And it is a prayer where the psalmist is presenting petitions of poverty and praise. 00:25:07.700 --> 00:25:18.700 As we look at the psalm, we discern that, the petitions of poverty and praise. 00:25:18.700 --> 00:25:26.700 And that comes out very strongly in the boldness with which the psalm begins. 00:25:26.700 --> 00:25:29.700 The boldness of the opening petition. 00:25:29.700 --> 00:25:34.700 Incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me. 00:25:34.700 --> 00:25:47.700 In many other places the psalms open with great declarations of reverence and respect. 00:25:47.700 --> 00:25:52.700 But here, because of the poverty that the psalmist is experiencing, 00:25:52.700 --> 00:25:58.700 it's as if he rushes into the presence of God and just pours himself out. 00:25:58.700 --> 00:26:04.700 In the metrical psalm, it perhaps comes across even more strongly where it says, 00:26:04.700 --> 00:26:07.700 bow down thine ear. 00:26:07.700 --> 00:26:17.700 It's such a bold petition for a petitioner to come before the living God and make that request. 00:26:17.700 --> 00:26:25.700 Because the Bible teaches us that before God, we are the clay. 00:26:25.700 --> 00:26:28.700 And he is the potter. 00:26:28.700 --> 00:26:33.700 And we have that in the Old Testament prophecies, 00:26:33.700 --> 00:26:40.700 where, for instance, in Isaiah, in chapter 64 and verse 8, we read these words, 00:26:40.700 --> 00:26:48.700 But now, O Lord, you are our father, we are the clay, and you are our potter. 00:26:48.700 --> 00:26:51.700 We are all the work of your hand. 00:26:51.700 --> 00:27:01.700 And in another place Isaiah says, does the clay say to whom who forms it, what are you making? 00:27:01.700 --> 00:27:13.700 And here we have this bold petition of the clay to the potter saying, bow down your ear to me. 00:27:13.700 --> 00:27:25.700 And most remarkably, elsewhere in the book of Psalms, we are told that the petition is answered. 00:27:25.700 --> 00:27:32.700 Words that we so often sing. 00:27:32.700 --> 00:27:38.700 Perhaps presenters here will understand what I say when it's one of the great weaknesses. 00:27:38.700 --> 00:27:46.700 I'm guilty of myself because being a presenter, you get so caught up with the concern about the tune and so on, 00:27:46.700 --> 00:27:51.700 that you can almost at times miss the very words you're presenting. 00:27:51.700 --> 00:28:02.700 And yet in Psalm 116, the psalmist tells us of what the effect of his petition being answered had upon him. 00:28:02.700 --> 00:28:11.700 Because he says, I love the Lord because my voice and prayers heeded here. 00:28:11.700 --> 00:28:15.700 And then he tells us the effect that that had on him. 00:28:15.700 --> 00:28:24.700 I, while I live, will call on him who bowed to me his ear. 00:28:24.700 --> 00:28:44.700 It's such a powerful image for us to reflect on God bowing his ear to hear a prayer from the very clay that we are. 00:28:44.700 --> 00:28:51.700 And yet before us here, that is exactly what we have again. 00:28:51.700 --> 00:28:53.700 The psalmist in his great need. 00:28:53.700 --> 00:29:05.700 And in verses 1 to 7, as he comes then to present his petitions of poverty and praise, 00:29:05.700 --> 00:29:12.700 from verses 1 to 7, he does that where time and again he highlights his conflict. 00:29:12.700 --> 00:29:16.700 Over and over again, the petitions are there. 00:29:16.700 --> 00:29:17.700 I am poor. 00:29:17.700 --> 00:29:19.700 I am needy. 00:29:19.700 --> 00:29:21.700 Be gracious to me. 00:29:21.700 --> 00:29:23.700 I cry to you all the day. 00:29:23.700 --> 00:29:26.700 Gladden the soul and so on and so on. 00:29:26.700 --> 00:29:28.700 His conflict. 00:29:28.700 --> 00:29:44.700 And then in verses 8 and 10, 8 to 10 rather, he presents to us as a backdrop to these, to his conflict, 00:29:44.700 --> 00:29:49.700 the confidence he has in the character of God. 00:29:49.700 --> 00:29:56.700 There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours. 00:29:56.700 --> 00:30:03.700 All the nations you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name. 00:30:03.700 --> 00:30:06.700 For you are great and do wondrous things. 00:30:06.700 --> 00:30:09.700 You alone are God. 00:30:12.700 --> 00:30:14.700 These are wonderful words to read. 00:30:14.700 --> 00:30:25.700 When we see the conflict and distress that the psalmist experiences, summed up for us in the very first verse where he says of himself, 00:30:25.700 --> 00:30:30.700 I am poor and needy. 00:30:30.700 --> 00:30:34.700 And into the poverty and into the need. 00:30:34.700 --> 00:30:47.700 We then come to the remarkable petition that he presents in verse 11, which is going to be the focus of our thoughts for our time this evening. 00:30:47.700 --> 00:30:51.700 Where he then presents a petition. 00:30:51.700 --> 00:30:58.700 And he says, teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth. 00:30:58.700 --> 00:31:03.700 Unite my heart to fear your name. 00:31:03.700 --> 00:31:10.700 And the three points that present themselves specifically there. 00:31:10.700 --> 00:31:15.700 Your way, your truth, and your name. 00:31:15.700 --> 00:31:24.700 And so in this petition, in this verse he begins with these words, teach me. 00:31:24.700 --> 00:31:25.700 Me. 00:31:25.700 --> 00:31:34.700 And there is so much depth even in that two words. 00:31:34.700 --> 00:31:46.700 That they would easily, easily accommodate a single sermon being preached on these two words because of the depth that they contain. 00:31:46.700 --> 00:31:51.700 First of all, he identifies his need. 00:31:51.700 --> 00:31:58.700 In the midst of the conflict and strife and the poverty that he's experiencing, he now comes to God. 00:31:58.700 --> 00:32:03.700 And having assessed his need, he presents that need to God. 00:32:03.700 --> 00:32:05.700 And he says, teach. 00:32:05.700 --> 00:32:07.700 Teach. 00:32:07.700 --> 00:32:08.700 And in these words, teach me. 00:32:08.700 --> 00:32:09.700 Teach. 00:32:09.700 --> 00:32:10.700 Teach. 00:32:10.700 --> 00:32:11.700 He wants to be taught. 00:32:11.700 --> 00:32:14.700 And it's himself that he wants to be taught. 00:32:14.700 --> 00:32:14.700 00:32:14.700 --> 00:32:19.700 And he is the needy. 00:32:19.700 --> 00:32:20.700 Teach me. 00:32:20.700 --> 00:32:21.700 And he is the needy. 00:32:21.700 --> 00:32:21.700 00:32:21.700 --> 00:32:22.700 Teach me. 00:32:22.700 --> 00:32:23.700 Teach me. 00:32:23.700 --> 00:32:25.700 Teach me. 00:32:25.700 --> 00:32:30.700 Teach me. 00:32:30.700 --> 00:32:49.700 And in these words, teach me, we have an evidence of the change that took place in the life of the psalmist when he was brought from death to life and from darkness to light. 00:32:49.700 --> 00:32:50.700 What we call regeneration. 00:32:50.700 --> 00:32:52.700 What we call regeneration. 00:32:52.700 --> 00:32:53.700 Regeneration. 00:32:53.700 --> 00:33:02.700 That mysterious work that is undertaken by God in the spirit of man. 00:33:02.700 --> 00:33:16.700 That act of creation that takes place as the desire that the psalmist expresses here was infused into him. 00:33:16.700 --> 00:33:18.700 That act of creation. 00:33:18.700 --> 00:33:23.700 Because regeneration, being born again, coming to faith is an act of creation. 00:33:23.700 --> 00:33:32.700 Because Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians chapter 5, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. 00:33:32.700 --> 00:33:50.700 And in light of that new creation, now the psalmist comes with a great mark of that creation, a great mark of regeneration, what we might call a great mark of grace, desire. 00:33:50.700 --> 00:33:57.700 And his desire is for grace. 00:33:57.700 --> 00:34:02.700 His desire is for grace. 00:34:02.700 --> 00:34:07.700 Many people want a mark of grace. 00:34:07.700 --> 00:34:24.699 Some of the Lord's people, from time to time in their earthly pilgrimage experience a lack of assurance, even although their conversion at one point may have been very, very powerful. 00:34:24.699 --> 00:34:33.699 Yet along the way in the earthly pilgrimage, they can be brought to low places. 00:34:33.699 --> 00:34:37.699 And in themselves, they look for a mark of grace. 00:34:37.699 --> 00:34:43.699 And I think this is one of the greatest marks of grace. 00:34:43.699 --> 00:34:46.699 The mark of desire. 00:34:46.699 --> 00:34:56.699 Because as Isaiah reminds us, there was a day when we had no desire. 00:34:56.699 --> 00:35:00.699 But regeneration infused desire. 00:35:00.699 --> 00:35:03.699 Desire for grace. 00:35:03.699 --> 00:35:10.699 And we see that here in the psalmist. 00:35:10.699 --> 00:35:14.699 Verse 3, be gracious to me, O Lord. 00:35:14.699 --> 00:35:17.699 Verse 6, give ear, O Lord, to my prayer. 00:35:17.699 --> 00:35:20.699 Listen to my plea for grace. 00:35:20.699 --> 00:35:30.699 Because the recipient of grace becomes a grace-dependent child. 00:35:30.699 --> 00:35:38.699 And grace enrolls the child in the school of God. 00:35:38.699 --> 00:35:43.699 Where we become grace-dependent children. 00:35:43.699 --> 00:35:46.699 And the grace-dependent children. 00:35:46.699 --> 00:35:47.699 And the grace-dependent children. 00:35:47.699 --> 00:35:52.699 Exercise the desire they have to be in the means of grace. 00:35:52.699 --> 00:35:57.699 Where grace was received and where grace is communicated. 00:35:57.699 --> 00:36:00.699 Teach me, he cries. 00:36:00.699 --> 00:36:09.699 And then he asks what he wants to be taught. 00:36:09.699 --> 00:36:14.699 He says, teach me your way. 00:36:14.699 --> 00:36:19.699 Because he knows that there is only two ways. 00:36:19.699 --> 00:36:22.699 And for each and every one of us here tonight. 00:36:22.699 --> 00:36:25.699 It is either your way. 00:36:25.699 --> 00:36:28.699 Or we drop the Y. 00:36:28.699 --> 00:36:31.699 And it becomes our way. 00:36:31.699 --> 00:36:37.699 It's either his way or our way. 00:36:37.699 --> 00:36:39.699 Teach me, he says. 00:36:39.699 --> 00:36:40.699 Teach me, he says. 00:36:40.699 --> 00:36:41.699 Your way. 00:36:41.699 --> 00:36:52.699 And in saying that, he recognizes that it is God alone that is able to teach him. 00:36:52.699 --> 00:36:56.699 Some of you here may be teachers. 00:36:56.699 --> 00:37:02.699 Some of you may know the burden of teaching. 00:37:02.699 --> 00:37:06.699 But the request that has been made here to be taught. 00:37:06.699 --> 00:37:11.699 Is to be taught by the only one that can teach this lesson. 00:37:11.699 --> 00:37:15.699 Because those of you who are teachers are teaching the head. 00:37:15.699 --> 00:37:24.699 But the lesson that is being taught here needs to be taught and received in the heart. 00:37:24.699 --> 00:37:27.699 For God alone has access to the heart. 00:37:27.699 --> 00:37:36.699 For it is there that God infuses the capacity to learn. 00:37:36.699 --> 00:37:42.699 And the capacity to be taught the lesson. 00:37:42.699 --> 00:37:45.699 The capacity to learn. 00:37:45.699 --> 00:37:50.699 And the capacity to be taught the lesson. 00:37:50.699 --> 00:37:54.699 For those of you who are teachers, if there are any present. 00:37:54.699 --> 00:38:00.699 And all of us know that in the field of education, there are what we call the three R's. 00:38:00.699 --> 00:38:05.699 The three fundamental skills of education. 00:38:05.699 --> 00:38:09.699 Reading, writing and arithmetic. 00:38:09.699 --> 00:38:16.699 But in the lesson that we are taught in grace. 00:38:16.699 --> 00:38:21.699 I want to suggest that there are four R's. 00:38:21.699 --> 00:38:28.699 Because the first R is reading. 00:38:28.699 --> 00:38:33.699 And the second one is retaining what we read. 00:38:33.699 --> 00:38:37.699 And the third one is reflecting upon what we read. 00:38:37.699 --> 00:38:43.699 And all of these are of no benefit to us. 00:38:43.699 --> 00:38:53.699 Unless what we read and what we retain and what we reflect upon is that which regulates our lives. 00:38:53.699 --> 00:39:01.699 And one Bible expositor makes this observation with great solemnity. 00:39:01.699 --> 00:39:02.699 And he says this. 00:39:02.699 --> 00:39:07.699 We may listen to the best preacher who ever lived. 00:39:07.699 --> 00:39:12.699 But unless God shall apply the truth to our heart. 00:39:12.699 --> 00:39:15.699 We will not receive it. 00:39:15.699 --> 00:39:17.699 We need. 00:39:17.699 --> 00:39:20.699 We need. 00:39:20.699 --> 00:39:25.699 Here is a psalm where the psalmist is saying. 00:39:25.699 --> 00:39:27.699 I am poor and needy. 00:39:27.699 --> 00:39:32.699 We need the instruction and the illumination of the Holy Spirit. 00:39:32.699 --> 00:39:38.699 In the upper room discourse, Christ said to the disciples about the Holy Spirit. 00:39:38.699 --> 00:39:40.699 He shall teach you all things. 00:39:40.699 --> 00:39:44.699 In the school of God. 00:39:44.699 --> 00:39:48.699 We need the instruction and illumination of the Holy Spirit. 00:39:48.699 --> 00:39:51.699 But unless we have his teaching, we cannot. 00:39:51.699 --> 00:39:56.699 And we will not know the truth. 00:39:56.699 --> 00:40:02.699 Therefore, he says, never neglect the means of grace. 00:40:02.699 --> 00:40:07.699 And then he adds this with great solemnity. 00:40:07.699 --> 00:40:12.699 But at the same time, never get into the condition that some are in. 00:40:12.699 --> 00:40:19.699 who feel quite happy so long as they have been to a place of worship on the Lord's day. 00:40:19.699 --> 00:40:26.699 And who return home just as if they had done all their duty for the day. 00:40:26.699 --> 00:40:31.699 They are, he says, like men who go to the market. 00:40:31.699 --> 00:40:33.699 But buy nothing. 00:40:33.699 --> 00:40:42.699 Here in this school. 00:40:42.699 --> 00:40:46.699 There are lessons that we must learn. 00:40:46.699 --> 00:40:49.699 When the capacity to be taught. 00:40:49.699 --> 00:40:58.699 And the capacity to receive and retain the lesson is infused by the work of the Holy Spirit. 00:40:58.699 --> 00:41:05.699 And of that vast curriculum that there is in God's school. 00:41:05.699 --> 00:41:11.699 I want tonight to focus on one particular aspect of the curriculum. 00:41:11.699 --> 00:41:20.699 And that is the lessons that are taught concerning ourselves. 00:41:20.699 --> 00:41:24.699 I spoke earlier about the four R's, the arithmetic. 00:41:24.699 --> 00:41:28.699 In this school, there is spiritual arithmetic. 00:41:28.699 --> 00:41:34.699 And here, in the lesson that has been taught to us, 00:41:34.699 --> 00:41:46.699 we learn what one writer calls addition by subtraction. 00:41:46.699 --> 00:41:55.699 In a Christian context, he says, addition by subtraction signifies that spiritual growth 00:41:55.699 --> 00:42:02.699 and a closer relationship with God that can only be achieved. 00:42:02.699 --> 00:42:06.699 Not by adding more things to one's life. 00:42:06.699 --> 00:42:19.699 But by removing, by removing negative influences and practices. 00:42:19.699 --> 00:42:24.699 And what a day we find ourselves in. 00:42:24.699 --> 00:42:32.699 Of negative influences that can have such a profound influence upon us. 00:42:32.699 --> 00:42:40.699 But even in the psalmist's day, negative influences had an effect on him. 00:42:40.699 --> 00:42:51.699 And we'll come to that when he identifies the need for his heart to be united. 00:42:51.699 --> 00:43:05.699 Learning addition by subtraction is one of the most difficult lessons that we are taught about ourselves in this school. 00:43:05.699 --> 00:43:08.699 It's one thing to say, teach me your way. 00:43:08.699 --> 00:43:18.699 It's another thing as we receive the lessons, to put our yea and amen to the outworking of providence in our lives 00:43:18.699 --> 00:43:23.699 and say, not my way, Lord, but your way. 00:43:23.699 --> 00:43:28.699 Because your ways are not my ways. 00:43:28.699 --> 00:43:31.699 Let me illustrate this to you. 00:43:31.699 --> 00:43:39.699 By bringing before you one who has a recipient of grace recorded for us. 00:43:39.699 --> 00:43:49.699 The profound experience of being a recipient of grace. 00:43:49.699 --> 00:43:52.699 Grace that he heard. 00:43:52.699 --> 00:43:55.699 And today across the world. 00:43:55.699 --> 00:43:59.699 In many diets of worship. 00:43:59.699 --> 00:44:04.699 The words that he recorded will have been lifted up in praise. 00:44:04.699 --> 00:44:10.699 Where multitudes today will have sung. 00:44:10.699 --> 00:44:14.699 Amazing grace, how sweet the sound. 00:44:14.699 --> 00:44:19.699 That saved a wretch like me. 00:44:19.699 --> 00:44:23.699 I once was lost, but now I'm found. 00:44:23.699 --> 00:44:28.699 Was blind, but now I see. 00:44:28.699 --> 00:44:34.699 The effect of being a recipient of grace. 00:44:34.699 --> 00:44:39.699 And what it had for John Newton. 00:44:39.699 --> 00:44:44.699 And the depth of assurance that he received. 00:44:44.699 --> 00:44:51.699 And the depth of inward illumination enabling him to write these remarkable words. 00:44:51.699 --> 00:44:53.699 Amazing grace. 00:44:53.699 --> 00:44:58.699 And yet, as I said a minute ago. 00:44:58.699 --> 00:45:01.699 On the earthly pilgrimage. 00:45:01.699 --> 00:45:03.699 As we go on. 00:45:03.699 --> 00:45:06.699 In this school and we are taught. 00:45:09.699 --> 00:45:13.699 The lesson of addition by subtraction can be painful. 00:45:13.699 --> 00:45:20.699 It's almost hard to believe that a man like John Newton. 00:45:20.699 --> 00:45:24.699 Who wrote such beautiful words. 00:45:24.699 --> 00:45:25.699 Amazing grace. 00:45:25.699 --> 00:45:30.699 Could further on in his earthly pilgrimage write this. 00:45:30.699 --> 00:45:36.699 It is a point I long to know. 00:45:36.699 --> 00:45:37.699 Of that. 00:45:37.699 --> 00:45:40.699 Often it causes anxious thought. 00:45:40.699 --> 00:45:45.699 Do I love the Lord or no? 00:45:45.699 --> 00:45:47.699 Am I his? 00:45:47.699 --> 00:45:49.699 Or am I not? 00:45:49.699 --> 00:45:54.699 If I love, why am I thus? 00:45:54.699 --> 00:45:57.699 Why this dull and lifeless frame? 00:45:57.699 --> 00:46:00.699 Hardly sure can they be worse. 00:46:00.699 --> 00:46:03.699 Who have never known his name. 00:46:03.699 --> 00:46:07.699 Could my heart so hard remain? 00:46:07.699 --> 00:46:12.699 Prayer a task and burden prove. 00:46:12.699 --> 00:46:15.699 Every trifle give me pain. 00:46:15.699 --> 00:46:18.699 If I knew a saviour's love. 00:46:18.699 --> 00:46:22.699 When I turn my eyes within. 00:46:22.699 --> 00:46:25.699 All is dark and vain and wild. 00:46:25.699 --> 00:46:28.699 Filled with unbelief and sin. 00:46:28.699 --> 00:46:31.699 Can I deem myself a child? 00:46:31.699 --> 00:46:32.699 And so he goes on. 00:46:32.699 --> 00:46:37.699 Being taught of God. 00:46:37.699 --> 00:46:47.699 And I think if we had been contemporary with John Newton. 00:46:47.699 --> 00:46:51.699 And we had heard him utter these remarkable words. 00:46:51.699 --> 00:46:58.699 expressing an extreme lack of assurance. 00:46:58.699 --> 00:47:01.699 From having been on the high mountain of assurance. 00:47:01.699 --> 00:47:05.699 We would be desperate to ask the question. 00:47:05.699 --> 00:47:08.699 What happened? 00:47:08.699 --> 00:47:13.699 And remarkably John Newton recorded for us what happened. 00:47:13.699 --> 00:47:20.699 Because elsewhere he wrote of what happened. 00:47:20.699 --> 00:47:23.699 In the school of grace. 00:47:23.699 --> 00:47:26.699 He prayed. 00:47:26.699 --> 00:47:32.699 I asked the Lord that I might grow in faith and love and every grace. 00:47:32.699 --> 00:47:36.699 Might more of his salvation know and seek. 00:47:36.699 --> 00:47:38.699 More earnestly his face. 00:47:38.699 --> 00:47:42.699 It was he who taught me thus to pray. 00:47:42.699 --> 00:47:45.699 And he I trust has answered prayer. 00:47:45.699 --> 00:47:50.699 But it has been in such a way. 00:47:50.699 --> 00:47:53.699 As almost drove me. 00:47:53.699 --> 00:47:55.699 To despair. 00:47:55.699 --> 00:48:00.699 I'd hope that in some favoured hour at once. 00:48:00.699 --> 00:48:02.699 He'd answer my request. 00:48:02.699 --> 00:48:06.699 And by his love's constraining power. 00:48:06.699 --> 00:48:08.699 Subdue my sin. 00:48:08.699 --> 00:48:10.699 And give me rest. 00:48:10.699 --> 00:48:15.699 And listen to this.
