That's going to be our focus this evening. 00:00:15.519 --> 00:00:20.859 We have the request from those who are visiting Jerusalem. 00:00:21.859 --> 00:00:25.679 Sir, we wish to see Jesus. 00:00:25.679 --> 00:00:31.079 We wish to see Jesus. 00:00:33.280 --> 00:00:47.460 You can sense the anger and the desperation in the voices of the enemies of Jesus in verse 19. 00:00:47.460 --> 00:01:03.240 They have witnessed the arrival of Jesus into Jerusalem with celebration, with adoration, and it has pressed every button in the minds and hearts of his enemies. 00:01:04.319 --> 00:01:07.700 Their exasperation, you see that you are gaining nothing. 00:01:07.700 --> 00:01:11.780 Look, the whole world has gone after him. 00:01:11.780 --> 00:01:25.820 They say this despite the fact they put the word out like gangsters, that if anybody knew where Jesus was, they were to tell him or tell them, and they would sort the rest out. 00:01:26.060 --> 00:01:28.439 You have that in the very last words of the previous chapter. 00:01:28.439 --> 00:01:30.599 Chapter 11, verse 57. 00:01:30.959 --> 00:01:33.019 Chief priests and Pharisees had given orders. 00:01:33.140 --> 00:01:36.900 If anyone knew where he was, he should let them know so that they might arrest him. 00:01:37.039 --> 00:01:42.739 They're behaving like gangsters, but nobody's listening to them because Jesus has raised someone from the dead. 00:01:43.459 --> 00:01:48.500 And that carries more credibility than what the religious leaders of the day are doing. 00:01:48.500 --> 00:01:54.420 And so in exasperation, they cry out that the whole world has gone after him. 00:01:55.200 --> 00:02:13.020 And then as if to illustrate that very truth, you have some Greeks who were visiting Jerusalem at that time, meandering their way through the crowds to the disciples who would largely have been surrounding Jesus or certainly been very close by. 00:02:13.020 --> 00:02:24.820 And almost as if an illustration of how the whole world is going after him, here you have these non-Jewish people coming with a desire to see Jesus. 00:02:25.660 --> 00:02:31.680 In some ways, the words of Jesus' enemies were prophetic, that the whole world has gone after him. 00:02:31.740 --> 00:02:35.840 Because if we trace the history of the Christian faith, that's exactly what's happened, isn't it? 00:02:35.840 --> 00:02:44.620 Unlike the other major faiths in this world, whether we think of Islam or Hinduism or Buddhism, they are still strongest in their heartlands. 00:02:45.180 --> 00:02:56.939 Where these movements began, and other than migration of those from these areas, they haven't really seen growth in any other part of the world, unlike Christianity. 00:02:56.939 --> 00:03:08.479 Christianity, which is always on the move, whether from the start in the Middle East and heading westwards along North Africa and into Europe and then into North America. 00:03:08.639 --> 00:03:15.219 And now what we see in our generation, we see the movement of Christianity is going south to South America, to Africa. 00:03:15.219 --> 00:03:19.759 And it's gone east with more Christians in China than our people living in the United Kingdom. 00:03:19.759 --> 00:03:25.699 Because the message of Jesus truly has the world going after him. 00:03:26.259 --> 00:03:32.599 And we tonight are part of that worldwide movement of those who will hear of Jesus. 00:03:33.560 --> 00:03:39.299 And of course, little did these enemies of Jesus realize how prophetic their words would have been, 00:03:39.299 --> 00:03:43.299 which is actually one of the things that reoccurs in John's Gospel. 00:03:43.539 --> 00:03:46.719 People speak about things that they don't actually realize how true they are. 00:03:46.719 --> 00:03:55.039 But what we see in the ultimate fulfillment, if we have the panoramic view that John himself is given in Revelation, 00:03:55.460 --> 00:04:01.879 we do see, do we not, that people from every tribe and nation and language and tongue are going to be before the throne. 00:04:02.419 --> 00:04:04.960 They're going to be looking at this lamb that looks as if it had been slain. 00:04:05.620 --> 00:04:06.900 But this lamb is alive. 00:04:07.460 --> 00:04:10.139 This is the Lord Jesus himself. 00:04:10.439 --> 00:04:15.879 And so this evening, I want us to work through this section from verse 20 to verse 26. 00:04:15.879 --> 00:04:18.860 Noticing, first of all, that there is a request. 00:04:19.680 --> 00:04:21.500 Very simply, there is a request. 00:04:22.240 --> 00:04:25.639 Sir, we wish to see Jesus. 00:04:26.939 --> 00:04:34.060 And Jesus' life, as you will know, is bookended by unexpected visitors. 00:04:34.899 --> 00:04:37.579 At the start of his life, near the start of his life, 00:04:38.120 --> 00:04:43.420 he has these unexpected visitors from the east who want to come and bow down and worship. 00:04:43.420 --> 00:04:49.500 And here now, towards the very end of his life, he has these unexpected visitors coming from the west 00:04:49.500 --> 00:04:55.060 to simultaneously bow down and worship the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:04:55.640 --> 00:05:01.759 The actual, behind the translation we have here, it says that there's a repeated asking that took place here. 00:05:01.759 --> 00:05:04.719 And it's put the disciples in a little bit of a quandary. 00:05:05.319 --> 00:05:09.199 Because they know that Jesus has a target on his back. 00:05:09.699 --> 00:05:16.180 And they know that the enemies of Jesus are looking for any opportunity to try and cause difficulty for him. 00:05:16.560 --> 00:05:19.019 So therefore, Jesus, speaking to non-Jewish people, 00:05:19.319 --> 00:05:23.599 at this time of the year, is that going to be, is that going to cause more difficulty? 00:05:23.600 --> 00:05:26.220 And so Philip goes and tells Andrew. 00:05:26.700 --> 00:05:32.500 Then Andrew and Philip, verse 22, they went and told Jesus what was taking place. 00:05:32.540 --> 00:05:37.480 Because eventually they realised, from what they had seen in their front row seat, 00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:41.120 watching, observing, listening, learning from Jesus, 00:05:41.920 --> 00:05:49.120 that actually Jesus is someone who welcomes genuine interruptions. 00:05:49.980 --> 00:05:52.700 They've seen that throughout the past three years. 00:05:52.699 --> 00:05:55.120 They've seen that with different people. 00:05:55.439 --> 00:06:01.860 As he's walking with Jairus to the home where his young daughter is dying, 00:06:02.759 --> 00:06:09.719 there is the interruption of this woman who's been plagued for the last 12 years with illness. 00:06:10.639 --> 00:06:13.500 And Jesus sensed power going out from him. 00:06:14.019 --> 00:06:17.060 And so he stopped and he interacted with her. 00:06:17.500 --> 00:06:19.300 And she was made well. 00:06:19.300 --> 00:06:23.639 And so he welcomed that genuine interruption. 00:06:24.560 --> 00:06:27.639 He welcomed the genuine interruption that children would bring. 00:06:27.720 --> 00:06:29.240 I don't know if there's many kids in here tonight. 00:06:29.600 --> 00:06:37.180 But one of the things I say to the schools that I go and visit regularly is that Jesus always had time for young children. 00:06:38.000 --> 00:06:40.780 And children were very different then to today. 00:06:40.980 --> 00:06:44.100 I mean, today we almost idolise at times our kids. 00:06:44.100 --> 00:06:48.600 Because back then they literally were the lowest of the low, but not with Jesus. 00:06:48.760 --> 00:06:51.600 He would welcome genuine interruptions. 00:06:52.260 --> 00:06:57.160 Or you think of the blind men hearing that Jesus is walking along. 00:06:57.900 --> 00:06:59.939 And they're shouting and they're screaming. 00:07:00.200 --> 00:07:01.820 And to everyone else, this is an irritant. 00:07:01.819 --> 00:07:04.519 Why can't they just keep their mouth shut? 00:07:04.719 --> 00:07:05.719 But no, not with Jesus. 00:07:06.779 --> 00:07:09.180 Because Jesus welcomes genuine interruptions. 00:07:09.959 --> 00:07:14.180 And of course we can culminate that line of thinking when we land on the cross. 00:07:14.180 --> 00:07:23.920 Because you think, well, if there was ever a moment where Jesus would be excused for not actually receiving an interruption. 00:07:24.540 --> 00:07:27.400 It would be as he's hanging on the cross paying for sin. 00:07:27.480 --> 00:07:31.899 And yet he hears somebody on a cross beside him saying, remember me when you come into your kingdom. 00:07:31.899 --> 00:07:36.899 And so having come to that conclusion that actually Jesus welcomes genuine interruptions. 00:07:38.160 --> 00:07:41.240 Andrew and Philip go and tell Jesus. 00:07:41.240 --> 00:07:47.240 And so we have the third reference in the Gospel of John of Andrew bringing people to Jesus. 00:07:48.139 --> 00:07:50.639 First of all, he brought Peter to Jesus. 00:07:50.900 --> 00:07:53.920 He then brings the young boy with his packed lunch to Jesus. 00:07:54.340 --> 00:07:58.560 And here he is taking these foreigners to Jesus. 00:07:59.319 --> 00:08:06.939 Now, what an example Andrew is of being somebody who helps other people meet Jesus. 00:08:07.500 --> 00:08:09.220 What an example to follow. 00:08:09.220 --> 00:08:12.620 But let's ask the question, why did they want to see Jesus? 00:08:13.420 --> 00:08:15.580 They've come with this request, we want to see Jesus. 00:08:16.060 --> 00:08:17.120 The question is why? 00:08:17.700 --> 00:08:19.220 Why do we want to see Jesus? 00:08:20.120 --> 00:08:24.940 Had they heard something of the power of his miracles? 00:08:26.660 --> 00:08:33.040 Had they heard that the authority of the words by which he spoke 00:08:33.039 --> 00:08:37.699 was in a different league to anybody else? 00:08:38.500 --> 00:08:41.439 Had they heard that he was a man and a mission? 00:08:41.819 --> 00:08:43.059 We don't actually know the answer. 00:08:43.159 --> 00:08:46.279 All of these things or a mix of these things could be true along with many other things. 00:08:46.599 --> 00:08:49.819 But what we do know is that they wanted to see Jesus. 00:08:51.059 --> 00:08:54.259 So what will they see when they look to Jesus? 00:08:54.379 --> 00:08:57.559 What do we see when we look to Jesus? 00:08:57.559 --> 00:09:03.219 Well, when we look to Jesus, we see somebody who is fully human, 00:09:03.779 --> 00:09:07.959 with a fully human frame, just like you and I. 00:09:08.519 --> 00:09:10.159 A frame that needs to be fed. 00:09:10.859 --> 00:09:13.639 And a frame that needs to be rested. 00:09:15.139 --> 00:09:17.619 A frame that needs to have water. 00:09:18.039 --> 00:09:23.239 A frame that could only be in one place at one time. 00:09:23.240 --> 00:09:30.039 When we look to Jesus, we see someone who was, in that sense, fully human. 00:09:30.919 --> 00:09:36.820 He became man without ceasing to be God. 00:09:37.960 --> 00:09:40.100 Because not simply is he fully human. 00:09:40.220 --> 00:09:45.500 When we look at our Savior, we realize that he is fully divine as well, is he not? 00:09:46.080 --> 00:09:51.460 Who else in history has had the power to drive out disease? 00:09:51.460 --> 00:09:56.240 Either by the words that he spoke or by the very touch of his hand. 00:09:57.379 --> 00:10:01.340 Who else had the power to silence demons? 00:10:01.960 --> 00:10:03.840 To drive demons away? 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:06.160 To free those who had been plagued by them? 00:10:07.620 --> 00:10:09.080 You live on a windy island. 00:10:09.379 --> 00:10:10.460 I grew up on a windy island. 00:10:10.600 --> 00:10:13.639 None of us have been able to ever stop the wind from blowing. 00:10:14.120 --> 00:10:15.500 Or the swell of the waves. 00:10:15.639 --> 00:10:18.300 But Jesus could by just uttering a few words. 00:10:18.299 --> 00:10:23.000 Who else could speak into death and say to a little girl, 00:10:24.079 --> 00:10:24.899 Wake up. 00:10:26.339 --> 00:10:27.759 Reaching down into death. 00:10:28.139 --> 00:10:30.359 Even by his words to bring her back to life. 00:10:30.859 --> 00:10:35.339 Who alone had the power to decree, declare someone's sins to be forgiven. 00:10:35.599 --> 00:10:37.740 All of these things are what we would expect. 00:10:37.939 --> 00:10:41.000 If somebody claimed to be divine, we would turn around and say, prove it. 00:10:41.000 --> 00:10:49.759 And what we see when we look at Jesus is we see someone who is fully divine and someone who is fully human. 00:10:50.659 --> 00:10:54.100 It's not some mixture when it's 70, 30 or whatever. 00:10:54.279 --> 00:10:55.519 Fully divine, fully human. 00:10:55.740 --> 00:10:58.899 That's who we see when we see Jesus. 00:10:58.899 --> 00:11:06.579 And he is the one who, having taken this human frame to himself without ceasing to be God, 00:11:06.639 --> 00:11:11.139 who came on this worldwide mission that all the way through John's Gospel we hear about. 00:11:11.419 --> 00:11:12.500 He's going to be the Lamb of God. 00:11:12.579 --> 00:11:14.559 He's going to take away the sins of the world. 00:11:14.980 --> 00:11:17.079 He's going to be the expression of the love of God. 00:11:17.439 --> 00:11:19.199 For God so loved the world. 00:11:19.439 --> 00:11:23.799 He declares himself not simply to be the light of the nation, but the light of the world. 00:11:23.799 --> 00:11:28.639 God, he's the one who's going to gather his sheep from other pens, from other areas. 00:11:28.719 --> 00:11:29.740 He's going to bring them together. 00:11:30.459 --> 00:11:43.379 They are coming with this desire to see the one who stands alone as the God-man who has come on a mission to save men, women, boys and girls. 00:11:43.899 --> 00:11:48.979 And so the request is the wisest request anybody could ever make. 00:11:48.980 --> 00:11:57.879 It is the wisest focus we could ever have, that we want to see Jesus. 00:11:59.180 --> 00:12:09.759 And if we have seen Jesus for who he is, not simply fully God and fully man out there, but fully God and fully man who has come on a mission to save us, 00:12:10.440 --> 00:12:18.639 then making sure that our vision of who Jesus is doesn't get clouded by our responsibilities and by our duties and all the different distractions of this world, 00:12:18.639 --> 00:12:20.000 well, that's our responsibility. 00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:28.080 We want to keep seeing Jesus because there is none else other than him, is there? 00:12:28.879 --> 00:12:36.939 So we see, first of all, in this passage, we see that they've come with a request not to be entertained, not to learn something, 00:12:37.580 --> 00:12:40.379 but they want to see the Savior. 00:12:40.379 --> 00:12:48.439 And this request is met in verse 23 and verse 24 with an answer. 00:12:48.620 --> 00:12:50.899 In fact, verse 23 to 25 is met with an answer. 00:12:52.080 --> 00:12:59.320 Because frequently when Jesus is initiated in a conversation, whether it's a question or a statement, 00:12:59.659 --> 00:13:02.240 he frequently replies with a question himself. 00:13:02.240 --> 00:13:09.000 And he comes not necessarily with the way that people would expect him to answer. 00:13:09.460 --> 00:13:11.460 He comes in different ways. 00:13:11.639 --> 00:13:12.659 And this is another one. 00:13:13.180 --> 00:13:15.320 So, sir, we wish to see Jesus. 00:13:15.980 --> 00:13:17.580 They come to Jesus. 00:13:17.879 --> 00:13:20.879 And in response to this, he sees something they don't expect. 00:13:21.539 --> 00:13:26.680 Because he says, the hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 00:13:26.679 --> 00:13:30.559 And they're going, okay, that's not quite what we were thinking about. 00:13:31.299 --> 00:13:32.579 They just want to see you. 00:13:33.299 --> 00:13:36.559 But Jesus is, as ever, multiple steps ahead. 00:13:37.099 --> 00:13:47.039 And he's going to deal with their request by actually clarifying what it is, who it is, that they're actually going to see. 00:13:47.879 --> 00:13:53.879 And so he sees and views this as a turning point. 00:13:53.879 --> 00:14:04.019 This is a turning point whereby here you have non-Jews coming to him with a desire to see him and to know him. 00:14:04.600 --> 00:14:06.659 And now he sees the hour has come. 00:14:06.820 --> 00:14:19.620 That the request from these Greeks is a sign in the mind and understanding of our Savior that there is now a different moment that has been reached. 00:14:19.620 --> 00:14:34.179 Because now is the time that the gospel, the message, the good news that he is about to secure is going to go beyond just the lost sheep of Israel. 00:14:34.879 --> 00:14:44.940 You'll recall on a couple of occasions that phrase, the lost sheep of Israel, and similar phrases were used to narrow down the scope of Jesus' ministry. 00:14:44.940 --> 00:14:51.460 That he sent his followers out to gather in the lost sheep. 00:14:52.180 --> 00:15:00.240 When you had the woman who came desperate for healing for her daughter, she recognized that she was not of Jewish origin. 00:15:00.580 --> 00:15:06.640 That she was one of the dogs in that sense, the derogatory term of the day. 00:15:06.639 --> 00:15:13.480 But she recognized that even the dogs would eat the crumbs that fall from the master's table because the scope of Jesus' ministry had been limited. 00:15:14.720 --> 00:15:19.179 With this request, Jesus sees something change. 00:15:20.379 --> 00:15:25.740 Because he now moves on to the fact that in light of this request, the hour has come. 00:15:25.740 --> 00:15:30.840 Because up until this point, the hour is always in the future. 00:15:31.980 --> 00:15:40.899 It is almost like a drumbeat that is beating at different times throughout the gospel of John. 00:15:41.639 --> 00:15:43.019 His hour has not yet come. 00:15:43.500 --> 00:15:44.720 His hour has not yet come. 00:15:45.159 --> 00:15:46.379 His hour has not yet come. 00:15:46.779 --> 00:15:48.060 His hour has not yet come. 00:15:48.060 --> 00:15:51.940 And yet we reach here and his hour has come. 00:15:51.940 --> 00:15:57.580 We know that Jesus operated to a very different timeline and timetable, didn't he? 00:15:58.080 --> 00:16:09.620 His family, who up until that point didn't believe in him, thought it would be very straightforward for him to take his miracle roadshow from the north to Jerusalem in chapter 7 for the Feast of Tabernacles. 00:16:10.020 --> 00:16:12.940 And Jesus reminded them, for you any time is right, but not for me. 00:16:12.940 --> 00:16:23.320 Because Jesus was living this perfectly obedient life in every single detail, according to the Father's will, according to the Father's timetable. 00:16:23.660 --> 00:16:26.700 And yet now he realizes something is different here. 00:16:27.560 --> 00:16:34.740 This is now an occasion that has moved on to the next stage, if you like, of his mission. 00:16:34.740 --> 00:16:55.399 That with this hour coming, his death and all that is going to unfold with regard to his death and all that his death is going to secure, that's now come closer into view as we have this request from these non-Jewish people. 00:16:55.399 --> 00:17:00.679 And so this hour has arrived. 00:17:01.539 --> 00:17:05.460 And he said, it's the hour for the Son of Man to be glorified. 00:17:06.180 --> 00:17:08.879 And it's that phrase, Son of Man, that stands out. 00:17:09.639 --> 00:17:15.700 Because if we were there and if we'd had some of the knowledge of the Old Testament that some of the people standing there would have had, 00:17:16.339 --> 00:17:21.099 their ears would have picked up at the use of the term Son of Man. 00:17:21.099 --> 00:17:25.679 This would have been loaded with significance for them. 00:17:26.659 --> 00:17:31.000 It's almost as if they would have looked to somebody around them and said, did he actually see that? 00:17:31.339 --> 00:17:32.679 He said Son of Man, didn't he? 00:17:33.659 --> 00:17:37.419 With some of them, their hearts would have began to beat that little bit faster. 00:17:38.139 --> 00:17:42.019 Because this term was loaded with significance. 00:17:42.819 --> 00:17:45.799 The significance you find in the Old Testament, you go back to Daniel chapter 7, 00:17:45.799 --> 00:17:55.259 and it talks about this worldwide never-ending rule that will come with the Son of Man, come with the one sent by God. 00:17:55.659 --> 00:18:04.419 And here is Jesus referencing himself as the Son of Man, as the one who has come. 00:18:05.440 --> 00:18:09.399 And a little bit like you, I mean all these analogies, they work to an extent and then they don't. 00:18:09.400 --> 00:18:18.320 But you think of how candidates for the US presidency, when they're about to announce their nomination to put themselves forward as a candidate for their party, 00:18:18.759 --> 00:18:22.680 that they'll go to a location that's significant for them. 00:18:22.980 --> 00:18:25.640 And the setting will just be what it needs to be. 00:18:25.880 --> 00:18:28.880 And the wording will just be what they think it needs to be. 00:18:29.000 --> 00:18:34.920 And everything will be planned and coordinated for this great statement that they are in this race, 00:18:34.980 --> 00:18:38.400 and they're going to bring change and whatever else they promise that never actually materialises. 00:18:38.400 --> 00:18:40.860 But that's how they do things, isn't it? 00:18:41.360 --> 00:18:46.580 Well, we reverse back a few thousand years, and this is what some of the people there would have been thinking. 00:18:47.000 --> 00:18:47.960 Here is Jesus. 00:18:48.780 --> 00:18:50.500 He is, we're at Passover time. 00:18:51.780 --> 00:18:55.440 And he's talking about himself in terms of the Son of Man. 00:18:56.040 --> 00:18:57.640 We are now moving on to a new level. 00:18:57.940 --> 00:19:01.300 The hope that we've been waiting for is about to be realised. 00:19:01.299 --> 00:19:08.680 And so for the folk who were listening, it was falling into place. 00:19:08.680 --> 00:19:14.860 And yet what they hadn't realised, didn't realise, perhaps had forgotten, 00:19:15.700 --> 00:19:18.580 what Jesus had said earlier on in chapter 3, 00:19:19.620 --> 00:19:25.759 when he talked about that for the Son of Man to be the one who would ascend, 00:19:25.860 --> 00:19:27.580 he needs to be the one who first of all descends. 00:19:27.960 --> 00:19:31.420 No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 00:19:31.420 --> 00:19:40.600 For Jesus to be this Son of Man, for him to be the one who was going to secure the freedom 00:19:40.600 --> 00:19:46.820 that they desperately needed, which was on a spiritual level rather than on a political or physical level, 00:19:47.480 --> 00:19:51.220 then he not simply would have to descend to live among them, 00:19:51.860 --> 00:19:54.060 but his descent was going to be a descent to death, 00:19:54.059 --> 00:19:56.500 which is why, again in John's Gospel, 00:19:56.799 --> 00:20:01.119 Son of Man is quoted in relation to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. 00:20:01.960 --> 00:20:06.339 And so we have this request, 00:20:07.299 --> 00:20:10.559 and we have this answer that is given, 00:20:10.960 --> 00:20:17.299 where Jesus is bringing the focus round to what's about to take place. 00:20:17.759 --> 00:20:19.019 The hour has come, 00:20:19.419 --> 00:20:22.480 and the Son of Man is now going to be glorified. 00:20:22.480 --> 00:20:28.319 And the glorification is going to involve a dying. 00:20:28.920 --> 00:20:30.019 Verse 24, 00:20:30.380 --> 00:20:33.880 unless a grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it remains alone, 00:20:33.960 --> 00:20:35.500 but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 00:20:36.339 --> 00:20:42.420 He's talking about being glorified in the context of dying. 00:20:43.680 --> 00:20:46.259 And for us, that seems very odd, 00:20:46.720 --> 00:20:49.480 because in the occasions that we do speak about glorification, 00:20:49.480 --> 00:20:56.079 if we do speak about trying to give people the recognition that they deserve, 00:20:56.240 --> 00:21:00.640 well, that almost involves a sense of exaltation, doesn't it? 00:21:00.640 --> 00:21:02.400 It involves a sense of prominence, 00:21:02.880 --> 00:21:05.299 a sense of attention being given in that sense. 00:21:06.480 --> 00:21:08.900 And yet Jesus is going in the very opposite, 00:21:08.900 --> 00:21:14.220 and he's talking about glorification in the context of death. 00:21:14.720 --> 00:21:18.880 Now, we know that as the passage, as the chapters unfold,
