00:00:46.000 So I just want to appreciate you as we begin. 00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:55.939 And we are, as you know, in preaching through the book of Revelation, and we are going through the first part, which are a series of letters. 00:00:56.200 --> 00:01:05.859 They are letters of encouragement to the churches to keep going, to stay strong, to endure hardship, to keep the faith. 00:01:05.859 --> 00:01:14.159 But maybe you're feeling, and I felt this a little bit last week too, that these letters are encouraging letters, but they're also weighty letters. 00:01:14.519 --> 00:01:18.859 They have this pattern of, I know these things that are good about you, but... 00:01:19.680 --> 00:01:28.159 And most of them have a pretty large after that but statement that says, after that, there's something significant. 00:01:28.700 --> 00:01:29.560 It's a warning. 00:01:29.560 --> 00:01:36.439 I was on YouTube this week looking at videos about how to use circular saws, and they're fascinating. 00:01:36.820 --> 00:01:40.320 This one guy said, I've been using a circular saw for 25 years. 00:01:40.799 --> 00:01:46.280 And he had a glove on his hand, and he said, this is what you should not do, because I cut off three of my fingers. 00:01:47.359 --> 00:01:51.740 And then he went on, and he talked about, here's how you use a circular saw. 00:01:51.859 --> 00:01:56.300 This is what you must do to protect yourself from doing harm. 00:01:56.439 --> 00:01:58.920 And this is what Jesus is doing for the churches. 00:01:58.920 --> 00:02:02.200 Jesus is saying, I love you, keep going. 00:02:02.519 --> 00:02:04.379 And I want to warn you. 00:02:04.820 --> 00:02:16.539 I want to make you know that if you keep doing these kinds of practices, it will result in damage, harm, destruction to your spiritual soul. 00:02:16.819 --> 00:02:20.920 So this is what the letters are all about, particularly. 00:02:21.139 --> 00:02:24.480 And as we've seen, there are seven letters to seven churches. 00:02:24.479 --> 00:02:27.519 There are actual churches in actual places. 00:02:27.520 --> 00:02:32.400 But we think the sevenfold pattern makes them applicable to all of us. 00:02:32.460 --> what these two letters have in common as we look at it. 00:07:55.139 --> 00:07:58.879 And here are a couple of things that we're going to see running through these passages. 00:07:59.139 --> 00:08:01.240 This is our outline if you're an outline person. 00:08:01.599 --> 00:08:06.659 We're going to first look at the context that in this context of Pergamum and Thyatira, 00:08:06.779 --> 00:08:10.620 there is a pressure to conform to the ways of the world. 00:08:10.919 --> 00:08:14.300 The second thing that we will see is that there is a problem. 00:08:14.399 --> 00:08:20.819 The problem is that within the church there has been a toleration of compromise with the culture. 00:08:21.899 --> 00:08:23.339 So the context, a problem. 00:08:23.339 --> 00:08:25.060 The third thing is there is a warning. 00:08:25.419 --> 00:08:31.339 A warning that the consequences for this path of compromise are real. 00:08:31.939 --> 00:08:34.299 And the fourth thing is a way forward. 00:08:34.720 --> 00:08:40.120 That is that there is a hope in a conquering Christ that can enable us to persevere. 00:08:40.539 --> 00:08:41.559 So this is our outline. 00:08:41.639 --> 00:08:44.259 A context, a problem, a warning, and the way forward. 00:08:44.399 --> 00:08:46.199 So let's look through them together. 00:08:46.360 --> 00:08:47.600 First, the context. 00:08:48.120 --> 00:08:50.740 The pressure to conform in these worlds. 00:08:50.740 --> 00:08:53.080 So I need to tell you a little bit about these cities. 00:08:53.320 --> 00:09:00.580 Pergamum was actually the most prominent city in Asia Minor in the first century. 00:09:00.740 --> 00:09:01.879 It was a leading city. 00:09:03.019 --> 00:09:06.460 And here in the text in verse 13, Jesus says, 00:09:06.620 --> 00:09:08.820 it is where the throne of Satan is. 00:09:08.899 --> 00:09:13.220 Or at the end of verse 13, it says, this is where Satan dwells. 00:09:13.220 --> 00:09:14.860 Now, we don't know exactly. 00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:22.200 Satan doesn't dwell in one of these places particularly because Satan is a spirit and he acts in lots of different places in the world. 00:09:22.540 --> 00:09:23.660 This is not his actual home. 00:09:23.720 --> 00:09:30.300 But it seems that maybe there's a reference to a particular kind of spiritual darkness or spiritual influence. 00:09:30.299 --> 00:09:35.479 When you look at the history, if you've ever been to Berlin and you've gone to the Pergamum Museum, 00:09:35.839 --> 00:09:43.839 the Pergamum Museum has the altar of Pergamum, which is this massive, it's actually a staircase with a huge frieze around the top. 00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:46.979 And it's this amazing piece of architecture. 00:09:47.240 --> 00:09:50.319 But it was meant as a place of worship to Zeus. 00:09:50.320 --> 00:10:00.680 And if you look through the details of it, you can see there's lots of dark imagery, spiritual imagery of idolatry involved in it. 00:10:01.420 --> 00:10:09.700 Not only was this true that Pergamum was a polytheistic city in Rome that had much worship, 00:10:09.700 --> 00:10:17.020 but it was also one of the leading places where the cult of the emperor began to arise in the first century. 00:10:17.019 --> 00:10:24.539 It was actually the first place in Asia where they built a temple to Augustus when he was a living emperor. 00:10:25.240 --> 00:10:30.720 And so the cult of the emperor, that is, worshiping the emperor Caesar, the leader of the Roman Empire, 00:10:30.879 --> 00:10:37.779 not simply as a political leader, but as a deified god, began during this time. 00:10:37.779 --> 00:10:51.939 And so in this context, imagine being a Christian, where you say there is one God, and there's one Savior Jesus. 00:10:53.699 --> 00:10:55.500 Imagine what it would be like. 00:10:56.259 --> 00:11:01.879 In this context, there's an immense amount of pressure to be like the people around you. 00:11:01.879 --> 00:11:10.179 And it seemed like there were people who were teaching in this church that there was nothing wrong with being a part of the imperial cult. 00:11:10.779 --> 00:11:13.659 One of the commentators writes this. 00:11:13.759 --> 00:11:20.299 They say that there was nothing wrong with participating in the imperial cult since most Romans did it out of civic duty rather than actual worship. 00:11:20.879 --> 00:11:28.080 And so maybe they were eating sacrificed meats, but at temple feasts honoring Caesar as God and Savior. 00:11:28.080 --> 00:11:30.820 But they weren't thinking this was a problem. 00:11:31.920 --> 00:11:34.740 So this is the context of Pergamum. 00:11:35.160 --> 00:11:37.440 And then you shift down the road to Thyatira. 00:11:37.600 --> 00:11:39.200 Thyatira was not a big city. 00:11:39.280 --> 00:11:40.580 It was actually a small city. 00:11:40.840 --> 00:11:44.660 But it was dominated by artisan guilds. 00:11:45.580 --> 00:11:53.400 So if you remember in Acts, Lydia, who was a purveyor of purple cloth, was from Thyatira. 00:11:53.399 --> 00:11:55.240 So this helps you. 00:11:55.600 --> 00:11:59.240 And it was famous for its dyes, for its bronzes, for lots of other goods. 00:11:59.539 --> 00:12:03.019 But each guild had a patron god. 00:12:03.579 --> 00:12:12.279 And each guild had rituals, rites, gatherings, where they would have a professional conference. 00:12:12.980 --> 00:12:17.519 But along with it, they would have religious worship to this patron god. 00:12:18.299 --> 00:12:18.579 Right? 00:12:18.580 --> 00:12:22.120 Imagine some of you, lots of you, go to professional conferences. 00:12:22.520 --> 00:12:26.220 And imagine when you gather in the morning, they would have a 20-minute series where they say, 00:12:26.540 --> 00:12:33.320 and now we all lift our glass to Aphrodite before you go on with whatever your work is. 00:12:34.700 --> 00:12:36.840 This was the context in which they lived. 00:12:36.980 --> 00:12:39.680 And this would be normal and expected and required. 00:12:40.920 --> 00:12:42.840 So here's the context. 00:12:43.740 --> 00:12:47.220 This is what, this is, the churches in these cities were not dead. 00:12:47.220 --> 00:12:49.000 They had some good life in them. 00:12:49.740 --> 00:12:52.379 But they were holding up under some persecution. 00:12:52.379 --> 00:12:55.820 But they were in danger because of this external pressure. 00:12:56.820 --> 00:13:03.060 And the danger was even more amplified by the problem. 00:13:03.440 --> 00:13:06.660 So the first one is the context, the social pressure. 00:13:06.820 --> 00:13:08.379 The second thing is the problem. 00:13:08.379 --> 00:13:18.179 The problem of compromise with the culture that was embodied by their tolerance of teachers within the churches 00:13:18.179 --> 00:13:23.519 that were teaching things that were not of God and the gospel. 00:13:24.080 --> 00:13:24.279 Right? 00:13:24.460 --> 00:13:26.100 And so this is what we see. 00:13:26.220 --> 00:13:28.320 Verse 20 uses the word tolerance. 00:13:28.899 --> 00:13:29.059 Right? 00:13:29.139 --> 00:13:30.240 But this I have against you. 00:13:30.279 --> 00:13:32.100 You tolerate these things. 00:13:32.100 --> 00:13:38.580 And again, we live in a world where tolerance is lifted up as a great value. 00:13:38.820 --> 00:13:45.159 And listen, if that means we treat one another with dignity and honor because we're made in the image of God, 00:13:45.519 --> 00:13:47.899 amen, that's the kind of tolerance we ought to have. 00:13:48.080 --> 00:13:50.779 And biblical Christians ought to support it completely. 00:13:51.159 --> 00:13:54.180 But tolerance doesn't mean we allow anything to happen. 00:13:54.320 --> 00:13:54.980 It doesn't matter. 00:13:55.120 --> 00:13:57.160 You do you and I do me and we're all good. 00:13:57.159 --> 00:13:58.919 But that's not the way God. 00:13:59.419 --> 00:14:05.779 And here, Christ is condemning them for saying you tolerate something that is not good. 00:14:06.719 --> 00:14:06.980 Right? 00:14:07.339 --> 00:14:08.879 And it's embodied in these teachers. 00:14:09.000 --> 00:14:10.839 The first one is the teaching of Balaam. 00:14:11.179 --> 00:14:15.019 Now, I don't have time to go back and read Numbers 22 through 25. 00:14:15.139 --> 00:14:16.039 Balaam was a prophet. 00:14:16.539 --> 00:14:20.839 The king of Moab, Balak, came and asked him to curse Israel. 00:14:21.019 --> 00:14:22.319 God wouldn't let him do that. 00:14:22.319 --> 00:14:26.039 Over and over again, there's a funny story about a donkey and all that. 00:14:26.039 --> 00:14:27.039 It's in the angel of the Lord. 00:14:27.159 --> 00:14:29.419 You can look it up later in chapter 24. 00:14:30.360 --> 00:14:41.480 But what ended up happening was this man seemed to then be involved with what happens in chapter 25, 00:14:41.779 --> 00:14:48.939 where the Moabite women then entice some of the Israelite men into sexual relationships 00:14:48.939 --> 00:14:52.500 that God had forbidden them to have. 00:14:52.500 --> 00:14:59.899 And so, what we see clearly, we don't know all of what Jesus is referring to here. 00:15:00.000 --> 00:15:02.259 We don't know all of what the teaching of Balaam is. 00:15:02.320 --> 00:15:05.399 We haven't found the book of the teaching of Balaam in the first century. 00:15:05.700 --> 00:15:08.399 But what we do know is what we see in verse 14. 00:15:09.539 --> 00:15:09.860 Right? 00:15:09.860 --> 00:15:11.919 Verse 14 says, 00:15:13.480 --> 00:15:31.980 So these are the two big things that are so clear that we know Jesus is saying, 00:15:32.100 --> 00:15:33.279 here's the problem. 00:15:33.279 --> 00:15:39.659 You're allowing people in your midst who teach that these things are okay. 00:15:40.120 --> 00:15:43.799 And it's exactly the same thing that we see in Thyatira. 00:15:44.039 --> 00:15:48.159 If we go ahead and we look at the next letter, where is it? 00:15:48.659 --> 00:15:51.899 Verse 20, I have this against you. 00:15:51.919 --> 00:15:53.439 You have this woman Jezebel. 00:15:53.559 --> 00:15:58.480 We don't know if this was an actual person or if this is a symbolic person. 00:15:58.480 --> 00:16:03.600 But it seems like there's someone teaching similarly the same thing. 00:16:04.039 --> 00:16:09.920 This person was teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality 00:16:09.920 --> 00:16:12.800 and to eat food sacrificed to idols. 00:16:12.940 --> 00:16:14.779 Now, Jezebel is a great image of this. 00:16:15.039 --> 00:16:17.800 If you remember Jezebel, 1 Kings 16 through 21. 00:16:17.960 --> 00:16:19.159 Again, I'm not going to read the whole thing. 00:16:19.580 --> 00:16:25.060 She was the foreign wife of King Ahab who did not do anything according to the Lord 00:16:25.060 --> 00:16:26.639 and the way he was supposed to. 00:16:26.639 --> 00:16:28.559 He was one of the worst kings. 00:16:28.919 --> 00:16:32.879 He was the one who went after Elijah the prophet and tried to kill him. 00:16:33.439 --> 00:16:35.480 Jezebel was active in all of these things. 00:16:35.639 --> 00:16:40.319 And Jezebel actively led her husband and therefore the whole kingdom of Israel 00:16:40.319 --> 00:16:47.139 to sacrifice to idols and then become involved in cultic prostitution 00:16:47.139 --> 00:16:51.179 to the gods of Baal that she worshipped. 00:16:51.179 --> 00:16:56.719 And so this image is brought forth and saying this is what's happening in your church. 00:16:56.819 --> 00:17:01.059 You're allowing people to come in and do this work of seducing, 00:17:01.779 --> 00:17:06.419 this power of pulling people into paths of destruction. 00:17:07.159 --> 00:17:11.399 And the other people, just so you can see the spread of what happens in Revelation, 00:17:11.519 --> 00:17:14.579 the book of Revelation, do you know who else seduces the church? 00:17:14.579 --> 00:17:16.919 Satan does it in chapter 12. 00:17:17.220 --> 00:17:20.819 The false prophet will do it in chapter 13 and chapter 19. 00:17:21.359 --> 00:17:26.279 And an image that we'll get to later, the harlot of Babylon in chapter 18. 00:17:26.500 --> 00:17:30.619 All of these are those who are seducing the church by saying, 00:17:30.859 --> 00:17:33.599 it's okay, there's something good here. 00:17:33.839 --> 00:17:35.019 Don't listen to God. 00:17:35.519 --> 00:17:37.240 Do these things. 00:17:37.240 --> 00:17:44.339 Now look, when we put it this bluntly, why would anyone follow these teachings, right? 00:17:44.859 --> 00:17:46.299 I mean, who would want this? 00:17:46.380 --> 00:17:47.279 Who would do this? 00:17:47.920 --> 00:17:52.559 But let's stop and remember the pressure and the context that they lived, right? 00:17:54.960 --> 00:18:00.620 Sometimes it's really tempting to just go with the flow to avoid persecution. 00:18:00.619 --> 00:18:08.739 We don't want our bosses to be mad at us because we're following faithfully the ways of Christ. 00:18:09.339 --> 00:18:16.539 We don't want our family to not invite us to Thanksgiving dinner because we believe in Jesus. 00:18:18.879 --> 00:18:25.699 We all have in our desire, in our hearts, a desire to be like the world that is around us 00:18:25.699 --> 00:18:30.159 so that we don't stand out and to be liked by the world that we live in. 00:18:30.619 --> 00:18:33.839 So that we don't face negative pressure. 00:18:35.219 --> 00:18:40.339 But we know, friends, that this is a reality for us. 00:18:41.199 --> 00:18:41.479 Right? 00:18:41.659 --> 00:18:44.359 That we might feel these similar As we think about Christ's call to step apart from the culture, 00:18:55.259 --> 00:18:58.339 we want to make sure that we're not being stupid about this. 00:18:58.339 --> 00:19:01.799 I know, sorry going to be, we should be, as Christians, people who seek peace and who love our neighbor. 00:19:11.539 --> 00:19:18.879 We don't need to be unnecessarily weird or combative or confronting for unnecessary reasons. 00:19:18.880 --> 00:19:25.860 But we need to know that following Christ will always lead us against the grain of our culture. 00:19:26.240 --> 00:19:27.820 And this is true in every culture. 00:19:27.940 --> 00:19:32.080 And different cultures are going to face different pressure points along the way. 00:19:32.440 --> 00:19:37.760 But as a follower of Christ, you will you go to that professional conference, do you hear the undertone of worship the idol? 00:25:54.100 --> 00:25:57.640 Worship the idol of whatever your industry is, whatever your work is. 00:25:57.960 wants for you. 00:27:32.619 --> 00:27:36.559 And we need to go back to the scriptures again and again. 00:27:36.559 --> 00:27:45.220 Because all of these things lead us away from Christ's purpose for Verse 22 and following in Thyatira gives a similar picture. 00:28:40.099 --> 00:28:45.259 It's far more complicated, and I'm not going to spend the time to really get into it because it's complicated. there are those who are against Christ, who follow the dragon and the harlot of Babylon and Satan. 00:30:02.440 --> 00:30:08.640 And we'll see all the imagery, but who've set themselves up against God our own gods. 00:30:14.259 --> 00:30:16.559 We will worship ourselves, whatever it is. 00:30:16.700 --> 00:30:18.339 But we will not bow our knee. 00:30:18.900 --> 00:30:21.359 And this battle is a cosmic battle. 00:30:21.539 --> 00:30:26.859 But it's not like Star Wars, where the force is both good and bad, and it's all going to work out in the end. 00:30:26.859 --> 00:30:33.339 In the end, good will win, and evil will be defeated and will be judged. 00:30:35.400 --> 00:30:40.779 And Jesus is saying, do not follow those who will lead you into destruction. 00:30:40.779 --> 00:30:48.819 Do not follow these patterns of immorality and idolatry that will lead you astray. 00:30:51.700 --> 00:30:57.720 He says, follow Christ now so that you can be with Christ forever. 00:30:59.220 --> 00:33:05.440 They even said, there's no way God can provide for us in the middle of this desert so that we might have food. 00:33:05.759 --> 00:33:10.759 And God miraculously provided manna so that they would live. 00:33:10.759 --> 00:33:18.680 And Jesus comes to us and says, I will give you manna that you have not yet tasted. 00:33:19.039 --> 00:33:31.660 I will give you all the richness of the
