You'll remember that Romans is a letter written by the Apostle Paul in the 50s AD. 00:00:23.879 --> 00:00:30.739 And it's called Romans because it's written to the churches in the city of Rome and this letter is about the gospel. 00:00:31.539 --> 00:00:35.539 It's about the good news of Jesus' life and death and resurrection. 00:00:35.539 --> 00:00:42.119 And we are now in the middle of chapter 8 which is about life in the Spirit. 00:00:42.640 --> 00:00:44.420 That is life in the Holy Spirit. 00:00:44.879 --> 00:00:56.820 And we are moving kind of from this discussion we've been having about holiness to all the benefits that come to Christians from the Holy Spirit. 00:00:56.820 --> 00:01:09.159 So we're moving from talking about the life of holiness where we've been for a while to talking about all the benefits, all the blessings that God gives to his people through his Spirit. 00:01:09.500 --> 00:01:12.939 And that's where we'll be in many ways through the rest of the chapter. 00:03:39.280 Some people, many people, consider Romans chapter 8 to be among the greatest chapters in the entire Bible. 00:03:39.420 --> 00:03:43.240 If not, in fact, the greatest chapter. has explained that salvation comes not by works but by God's grace. 00:03:56.299 --> 00:03:57.339 That was chapter 5. 00:03:57.919 --> 00:04:04.239 And then he spent chapters 6 and 7 in the beginning of chapter 8 talking about this question of holiness. 00:04:05.199 --> 00:04:08.560 Are we still holy even though we're not saved by works? 00:04:08.979 --> 00:04:09.319 Yes. 00:04:09.459 --> 00:04:18.459 Holiness instead comes by God's spirit. 00:04:18.459 --> 00:04:20.819 That's chapter 8. 00:04:21.279 --> 00:04:29.319 And now that Paul has clarified this need for holiness, the source of holiness, that it comes from the work of the Holy Spirit, 00:04:29.319 --> 00:04:38.579 he's going to explain to us the great benefits, the great blessings that come from our salvation. 00:04:38.579 --> 00:04:49.060 Now as we come to this portion, we need to remember where we left off last week because verse 14 picks up from where verse 13 left us. 00:04:49.439 --> 00:04:54.519 You'll remember verse 13 tells us life comes from walking in the spirit. 00:04:55.060 --> 00:05:02.699 Life now and life in the future comes from obedience, from living lives of holiness. 00:05:02.699 --> 00:05:06.659 Which raises a question that takes us to verse 14. 00:05:07.279 --> 00:05:09.120 Why is that so? 00:05:11.039 --> 00:05:15.219 Why is it that our lives of holiness are the path to life? 00:05:15.219 --> 00:05:25.680 Paul goes on to tell us verse 14, because walking in the spirit, obeying God, means that you are a son. 00:05:25.680 --> 00:05:27.680 Verse 14. 00:05:28.540 --> 00:05:34.300 For all who are led by the spirit of God are sons of God. 00:05:36.259 --> 00:05:41.480 First, it's important to remember, to know what Paul means here by being led by the spirit. 00:05:41.480 --> 00:05:45.800 He means what we've talked about previously the last number of weeks. 00:05:45.800 --> 00:05:55.800 Being led by the spirit in context means that you are fighting against talking about the obedience that comes from a new heart. 00:06:23.639 --> 00:06:32.699 So you'll see on page 7, the leading of the Holy Spirit is his continual work to influence God's children
