00:01:10.319 --> 00:01:24.059 My seminary experience was a time of a way to focus on God's plan and God's preparation for me for ministry. 00:01:24.060 --> 00:01:26.879 It worked out that way for me. 00:01:27.060 --> 00:01:30.079 Education happens a lot of different ways these days. 00:01:30.219 --> 00:01:33.299 But in those days, we had no internet. 00:01:33.299 --> 00:01:42.280 And so I got in my Honda Civic, packed everything I had and drove 600 miles from my mom and daddy. 00:01:42.280 --> 00:01:45.359 And got to New Orleans. 00:01:45.359 --> 00:01:50.980 And about three weeks in went, why Lord? 00:01:51.320 --> 00:01:51.719 Why? 00:01:51.719 --> 00:01:51.819 Why? 00:01:55.819 --> 00:02:02.840 Because he pulled me away for a time to plan and prepare to learn. 00:02:03.000 --> 00:02:10.460 Six months in, gave me the opportunity to pastor and learn what that process means. 00:02:10.460 --> 00:02:11.680 Or begin to learn. 00:02:11.760 --> 00:02:12.580 I'm still learning. went forward with what God's plan was for his life. 00:02:36.719 --> 00:02:47.219 But when he leaves the desert, Jesus ministers in Judea and in Galilee and in Jerusalem. 00:02:49.000 --> 00:02:52.439 For somewhere between six months and a year. 00:02:52.639 --> 00:02:54.780 And none of that is covered in Mark. 00:02:54.879 --> 00:03:01.939 As a matter of fact, the only gospel that we have that covers that is John chapter 2 through John chapter 4. 00:03:01.939 --> 00:03:06.859 That's where you find Jesus going to the wedding at Cana. 00:03:07.479 --> 00:03:09.300 Turning the water into wine. 00:03:10.259 --> 00:03:11.859 He goes into Jerusalem. 00:03:13.159 --> 00:03:16.280 He meets Nicodemus at night. 00:03:17.900 --> 00:03:21.680 He meets the Samaritan woman at the well. 00:03:23.000 --> 00:03:24.599 All of that happens. 00:03:25.719 --> 00:03:26.879 John records it. 00:03:28.120 --> 00:03:30.439 No one else records it in Scripture. 00:03:30.439 --> 00:03:37.620 And so that up to knowledge is just not as complete about that. 00:03:48.639 --> 00:03:53.099 We do know that during that period, after Jesus' baptism, 00:03:53.099 --> 00:03:57.639 that John, the one that baptized trend or look for a trend in our passage this morning. 00:04:24.280 --> 00:04:28.700 It's in Mark chapter 1, beginning in verse 14, it says this. 00:04:28.699 --> 00:04:35.959 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God 00:04:35.959 --> 00:04:40.920 and saying, the time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand. 00:04:41.079 --> 00:04:42.920 Repent and believe in the gospel. 00:04:43.920 --> 00:04:48.919 Passing alongside the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, 00:04:49.560 --> 00:04:51.839 casting a net into the sea for they were fishermen. 00:04:51.839 --> 00:04:58.879 And Jesus said to them, follow me and I'll make you become fishers of men. 00:04:59.419 --> 00:05:05.179 And going on a little further, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and John, his brother, 00:05:05.879 --> 00:05:09.079 who were in their boats, mending their nets. 00:05:09.739 --> 00:05:15.219 And immediately he called them and they left their father Zebedee in the boat 00:05:15.219 --> 00:05:19.419 with the hired servants and followed him. 00:05:19.420 --> 00:05:25.540 He says in the beginning of this passage that he is proclaiming the gospel of God. 00:05:25.980 --> 00:05:29.740 The euangelion, it's the Greek term, the euangelion of God. 00:05:29.860 --> 00:05:37.720 And the reason why I bring that up is because that term became kind of popular with Caesar Augustus 00:05:37.720 --> 00:05:39.060 about himself. 00:05:39.800 --> 00:05:41.840 It's the euangelion of Caesar Augustus. 00:05:41.900 --> 00:05:44.420 He liked to talk about the good news of himself. 00:05:44.420 --> 00:05:51.540 And so Mark, about that same time frame, is trying to clarify, I'm not talking about Caesar here. 00:05:52.259 --> 00:05:59.100 I'm talking about the real gospel, the real good news, the real euangelion, and that is God. 00:05:59.180 --> 00:06:00.100 It's about God. 00:06:00.379 --> 00:06:07.620 And so he establishes the difference in that by saying that he came proclaiming the gospel of God. 00:06:07.700 --> 00:06:09.240 Now what is the gospel? 00:06:09.240 --> 00:06:20.579 Well, the gospel is the proclamation and the demonstration of the good news that Christ has come to save us from our sins 00:06:20.579 --> 00:06:28.620 both now and for eternity and that if we'll repent of our sins and we'll trust Christ as our Savior 00:06:28.620 --> 00:06:37.620 and live for him from this day forward, for his honor and his glory, we'll spend eternity with him. 00:06:37.620 --> 00:06:46.959 Everything will change instantly when you follow Christ immediately. 00:06:48.379 --> 00:06:51.500 And that's the gospel, the real gospel. 00:06:53.120 --> 00:06:54.660 Luke tells us more. 00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:56.160 Mark's very succinct. 00:06:56.959 --> 00:07:02.399 He just says that Christ said the time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is at hand. 00:07:02.480 --> 00:07:03.459 Repent and believe in the gospel. 00:07:03.939 --> 00:07:06.819 But listen to how Luke describes that scene. 00:07:06.819 --> 00:07:09.259 It's in Luke chapter 4 verse 16. 00:07:09.379 --> 00:07:09.800 It says this, 00:07:10.639 --> 00:07:17.699 And Jesus came to Nazareth where he had been brought up, and as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, 00:07:17.920 --> 00:07:20.100 and he stood up to read. 00:07:21.159 --> 00:07:24.680 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. 00:07:24.839 --> 00:07:27.839 He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 00:07:28.579 --> 00:07:30.539 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, 00:07:31.060 --> 00:07:34.620 because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. 00:07:34.620 --> 00:07:39.920 For he has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, 00:07:40.180 --> 00:07:48.000 to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. 00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:56.439 And he rolled up the scroll, and he gave it back to the attendant, and he sat down. 00:07:57.819 --> 00:08:02.019 And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 00:08:35.519 They knew him. 00:08:37.100 --> 00:08:38.799 And he takes up the scroll, 00:08:39.519 --> 00:08:42.960 and he reads Isaiah. 00:08:43.759 --> 00:08:45.899 I mentioned this a couple of weeks ago, I believe. 00:08:46.019 --> 00:08:46.779 But Isaiah, 00:08:48.220 --> 00:08:50.840 there's two prophets that really stand out. 00:08:51.899 --> 00:08:53.379 One of them is Elijah. 00:08:53.620 --> 00:08:56.220 Elijah's kind of the prophet of prophets of sorts. 00:08:56.220 --> 00:09:01.340 But there's things written about Elijah, but Elijah didn't write them. 00:09:02.879 --> 00:09:05.620 But Isaiah wrote extensively. 00:09:07.320 --> 00:09:09.580 His prophecies are extensive. 00:09:09.960 --> 00:09:14.360 And it is not only the largest book of prophecy that we have in Scripture, 00:09:14.519 --> 00:09:16.279 but it is the most popular. 00:09:16.460 --> 00:09:17.960 It was in the first century, 00:09:18.440 --> 00:09:20.160 and it's well known today. 00:09:20.159 --> 00:09:22.120 But they really thought a lot of Isaiah. 00:09:22.259 --> 00:09:24.219 And so for him to speak of Isaiah, 00:09:24.559 --> 00:09:27.139 and to read from Isaiah, 00:09:27.139 --> 00:09:29.439 he's got everybody's attention. 00:09:31.699 --> 00:09:33.219 He reads Isaiah, 00:09:33.600 --> 00:09:35.379 and then he says, 00:09:35.600 --> 00:09:38.779 I am fulfilling this Scripture now. 00:09:38.779 --> 00:09:39.919 And he drops the mic. 00:09:40.879 --> 00:09:42.759 I mean, it's that kind of moment, folks. 00:09:43.500 --> 00:09:44.199 It is. 00:09:45.500 --> 00:09:47.019 And they were amazed. 00:09:47.980 --> 00:09:49.299 And they were affirmative. 00:09:50.379 --> 00:09:51.980 And they were blown away. 00:09:53.679 --> 00:09:54.679 And they were thinking, 00:09:54.799 --> 00:09:56.339 this is our hometown boy. 00:09:57.459 --> 00:09:58.399 Listen to him. 00:09:59.159 --> 00:10:00.539 That's Joseph's son. 00:10:03.819 --> 00:10:05.679 And then he started talking some more. 00:10:05.679 --> 00:10:10.539 And by the time Jesus got done speaking in the synagogue, 00:10:10.719 --> 00:10:11.579 they wanted to kill him. 00:10:13.719 --> 00:10:16.879 But he kept ministering to them and around them. 00:10:18.759 --> 00:10:22.120 All Mark says about that is that Christ said, 00:10:22.279 --> 00:10:23.299 the time is fulfilled. 00:10:24.039 --> 00:10:25.319 The kingdom of God is at hand. 00:10:26.019 --> 00:10:27.659 Repent and believe in the gospel. 00:10:28.719 --> 00:10:29.879 Listen, he's very succinct. 00:10:30.059 --> 00:10:31.439 If Mark was preaching today, 00:10:31.620 --> 00:10:32.519 you'd get out early. 00:10:33.639 --> 00:10:34.539 But he's not. 00:10:35.679 --> 00:10:39.379 He then passed by the sea. 00:10:40.039 --> 00:10:42.799 And he calls Simon and Andrew. 00:10:44.159 --> 00:10:46.319 Now, what Mark does not speak of 00:10:46.319 --> 00:10:48.599 is the ministry and the teaching 00:10:48.599 --> 00:10:51.139 that Christ did over the months 00:10:51.139 --> 00:10:52.219 that are not covered. 00:10:53.239 --> 00:10:54.159 And the reality is, 00:10:54.259 --> 00:10:54.979 in John 1, 00:10:55.039 --> 00:10:57.059 it tells us that Simon Peter 00:10:57.059 --> 00:10:58.739 and his brother Andrew 00:10:58.739 --> 00:11:00.319 spent a day with Jesus 00:11:00.319 --> 00:11:03.979 before he walked by the lake that day. 00:11:03.980 --> 00:11:05.840 And so they knew him. 00:11:06.539 --> 00:11:08.200 And they knew he was the Messiah. 00:11:08.320 --> 00:11:09.620 They were familiar with him. 00:11:10.460 --> 00:11:11.639 And then
