except not really praying much about 00:00:37.179 --> 00:00:37.420 it. 00:00:38.539 --> 00:00:43.399 And the day before the retreat, that just hit me like a ton of bricks. 00:00:43.939 --> 00:00:44.859 What a failure. 00:00:45.899 --> 00:00:47.259 What a fraud. 00:00:49.640 --> 00:00:53.399 I felt my weakness and my inadequacy exposed. 00:00:53.719 --> 00:00:56.560 You're only just in and day out to avoid that shame, that failure, that inadequacy, 00:02:41.319 --> 00:02:43.080 because we hate it, don't we? 00:02:43.080 --> 00:02:50.320 Listen, as Jesus speaks with his disciples here in this passage, 00:02:50.500 --> 00:02:54.360 he says a lot of really, really good things. 00:02:54.580 --> 00:02:58.820 And he actually doesn't deny our weakness, these things we're feeling. 00:02:59.840 --> 00:03:05.960 But he says two of the most helpful, hopeful things that I've ever heard. 00:03:06.220 --> 00:03:10.100 I can't wait to share them with you and with me this morning. 00:06:21.459 --> 00:06:26.519 We've seen over and over that this happens in Luke's biography of Jesus. 00:06:26.719 --> 00:06:26.819 Right? 00:06:26.819 --> 00:06:28.639 Jesus prays all the time. 00:06:28.639 --> 00:06:31.560 He prays before significant events. 00:06:31.939 --> 00:06:34.360 He withdraws by himself to pray. 00:06:34.480 --> 00:06:37.099 He teaches his disciples how to pray. 00:06:37.879 --> 00:06:43.079 And here, as he nears the cross, Jesus prays again. 00:06:43.899 --> 00:06:47.920 And these prayers are such good news. 00:06:47.920 --> 00:06:50.960 Because he prays for us. 00:06:52.480 --> 00:06:58.140 We see here first that Jesus prays for the sake of his struggling followers. 00:06:58.680 --> 00:06:59.860 Verse 32. 00:07:00.920 --> 00:07:04.580 I have prayed for you. 00:07:04.579 --> 00:07:08.419 Those must have been good words to hear, don't you think? 00:07:09.180 --> 00:07:10.599 Jesus turns to Peter. 00:07:10.699 --> 00:07:13.000 Maybe they're getting up from the table. 00:07:13.159 --> 00:07:14.180 I don't know. 00:07:14.680 --> 00:07:20.360 And he says to him personally, Peter, I've prayed for you. 00:07:20.899 --> 00:07:23.099 There's no one I would rather have praying for me, right? 00:07:25.039 --> 00:07:26.779 Why does Jesus say that? 00:07:27.319 --> 00:07:31.319 Why would Jesus need to pray for us? 00:07:31.319 --> 00:07:38.819 Well, he also says here that Satan is actively attacking us. 00:07:39.439 --> 00:07:43.300 He's speaking in verse 32 specifically to Peter. 00:07:43.459 --> 00:07:46.500 But he's addressing all of his disciples here. 00:07:46.680 --> 00:07:51.639 There at the table, he says, Satan has demanded to have y'all. 00:07:52.259 --> 00:07:53.319 To sift y'all. 00:07:54.300 --> 00:07:54.819 It's plural. 00:07:54.980 --> 00:07:56.560 Jesus doesn't actually say y'all. 00:07:57.039 --> 00:07:58.699 But that's what it means. 00:07:58.699 --> 00:08:00.199 He says, all of you. 00:08:01.659 --> 00:08:07.000 So Jesus' point is not that he prays for Peter exclusively and nobody else. 00:08:07.579 --> 00:08:10.259 But that he prays for Peter personally. 00:08:11.500 --> 00:08:16.199 All of his followers are under the attack of Satan, we're told. 00:08:16.500 --> 00:08:19.620 But Jesus prays for each of them by name. 00:08:19.620 --> 00:08:24.019 Maybe you hear that this morning. 00:08:24.100 --> 00:08:26.639 You're tempted to think, no big deal. 00:08:27.120 --> 00:08:28.500 I'm pretty much okay. 00:08:28.939 --> 00:08:30.240 Don't bother, Jesus. 00:08:32.620 --> 00:08:33.799 Peter gets that. 00:08:34.159 --> 00:08:35.200 Verse 33. 00:08:36.060 --> 00:08:37.639 Jesus says, I'm praying for you. 00:08:37.720 --> 00:08:40.659 Peter says, Lord, don't worry about me. 00:08:41.240 --> 00:08:45.240 I'm ready to go with you both to prison and to death. 00:08:45.240 --> 00:08:53.460 And Jesus said, I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day until you deny three times that you know me. 00:08:55.399 --> 00:09:02.860 Jesus is reminding Peter, another reason he prays for us, that our flesh is weaker than we realize. 00:09:03.820 --> 00:09:10.240 In fact, it may even be that place you think you'd never fall where Satan would most like to attack. 00:09:10.240 --> 00:09:15.399 And so Jesus prays for us even when we don't know we need it. 00:09:17.120 --> 00:09:23.000 These days we think the only good news for someone struggling is to hear that they're not weak. 00:09:23.159 --> 00:09:25.220 You know, tell them they're good, that they can handle it. 00:09:26.000 world is against us. 00:09:51.500 --> 00:09:55.240 Jesus has just spent a long time, a couple of weeks ago, for us, 00:09:55.340 --> 00:09:59.799 telling them that they're going to face significant opposition, persecution. 00:09:59.799 --> 00:10:05.539 And now he tells them that time, it's happening immediately. 00:10:06.399 --> 00:10:08.259 It's time for this to be fulfilled. 00:10:08.379 --> 00:10:10.620 What is written about me has fulfillment now. 00:10:10.779 --> 00:10:13.279 And if they attack me, they'll attack you. 00:10:13.719 --> 00:10:18.559 So no longer like earlier when I sent you know when you're struggling, it's hard to identify 00:11:19.480 --> 00:11:21.299 which one of those is coming at you, isn't it? 00:11:21.620 --> 00:11:23.199 Is it the world, the flesh, the devil? Jesus. 00:13:17.639 --> 00:13:23.720 I thought you would help me out of the tight spot so that I would succeed, Jesus. 00:13:25.600 --> 00:13:28.100 And Jesus says, I am helping you. 00:13:29.159 --> 00:13:31.419 I am with you. 00:13:32.100 --> 00:13:37.480 I am praying for you about the most important thing. 00:13:37.819 --> 00:13:43.159 That you would trust me when everything falls apart around you. 00:13:43.159 --> 00:13:48.919 That you would depend on my strength when you are too weak because you will be. 00:13:50.159 --> 00:13:53.740 Jesus prays not that Peter would avoid the trial. 00:15:06.200 He's not excited about Peter denying him. 00:15:06.779 --> 00:15:07.080 No. 00:15:08.240 --> 00:15:16.840 But our hearts turning to him in faith and repentance is much more significant to who needs to hear you talk about the idols of your youth? 00:16:23.060 --> 00:16:27.860 How Jesus has shown himself as more worthy and more valuable than those things you chased after? 00:16:28.640 --> 00:16:29.180 There is. 00:16:29.179 --> 00:16:34.419 Maybe it's in betrayal or divorce. 00:16:36.139 --> 00:16:41.079 I think there's someone else who knows the shame of a broken relationship. 00:16:41.599 --> 00:16:45.159 That needs to know how Jesus has been enough for you. 00:16:45.599 --> 00:16:49.299 And even enabled you to forgive where you thought you never would. 00:16:49.299 --> 00:16:53.579 Maybe it's in battling addiction. 00:16:54.379 --> 00:17:01.419 You think there's a brother or sister who needs the reminder that Jesus meets you there when you have blown it again? 00:17:02.679 --> 00:17:04.039 That he doesn't give up on you? 00:17:04.099 --> 00:17:04.899 That there's hope? 00:17:06.319 --> 00:17:14.339 See, it's often our weaknesses and our failures rather than our strengths and successes that God uses to point others to him. 00:17:14.399 --> 00:17:14.599 Right? 00:17:14.599 --> 00:17:16.839 Because he's the one who's strong. 00:17:17.159 --> 00:17:22.899 And so we comfort others as we ourselves have been comforted by God. 00:17:23.379 --> 00:17:24.779 That's how it works. 00:17:25.199 --> 00:17:31.159 And so Jesus prays this will happen in the lives
