He doesn't find eternal life, but he does meet 00:00:51.719 --> 00:00:55.799 a man who has attained immortality, named 00:00:55.799 --> 00:00:58.439 Utnapishtim. And on his 00:00:58.439 --> 00:01:00.099 end, he tells 00:01:00.099 --> 00:01:02.219 Gilgamesh about how he attained 00:01:02.219 --> 00:01:04.479 immortality by surviving a worldwide flood 00:01:04.479 --> 00:01:06.399 by making 00:01:06.399 --> 00:01:07.920 a boat and taking shelter in it. 00:01:08.459 --> 00:01:10.399 And this story is closely paralleled by other 00:01:10.399 --> 00:01:12.299 accounts, for example, the Akkadian Epic of 00:01:12.299 --> 00:01:14.459 Atrahasis, the Sumerian Flood Epic 00:01:14.459 --> 00:01:15.959 about Ziyu Sudra, 00:01:16.319 --> 00:01:18.099 and there's more distant, you know, 00:01:18.159 --> 00:01:20.200 culturally distant, but still similar 00:01:20.200 --> 00:01:22.200 stories outside of Mesopotamia as well. 00:01:22.200 --> 00:01:26.719 For example, the ancient Hindu text Matsya Pirena tells of how King 00:01:26.719 --> 00:01:31.260 Manu survives the great flood with the assistance of the god Matsya. 00:01:31.820 --> 00:01:36.680 And in Greek mythology, in Obed's Metamorphosis, it tells a story of 00:01:36.680 --> 00:01:41.820 Deucalion, who is a son of Prometheus, who survives the flood brought on by an 00:01:41.820 --> 00:01:46.260 angry Zeus by building a large chest and taking shelter in it. 00:01:46.260 --> 00:01:52.820 So there's some striking parallels in these stories, but the fact that these once again, as we've seen throughout the book of Genesis up to this point, it's the 00:02:40.200 --> 00:02:45.640 divergences from these other ancient Near Eastern accounts, not the convergences and after these accounts in the ancient Near East of the flood stories, the gods decide that 00:04:59.599 --> 00:05:05.239 in order to avoid another overpopulation problem, that they decree that some women should be 00:05:05.239 --> 00:05:06.439 celibate or infertile. 00:05:06.879 --> 00:05:10.019 And they also decree that some infants will die soon after birth. 00:05:10.479 --> 00:05:16.279 But in stark contrast, in the Bible, the Lord God says three times and commands and blesses 00:05:16.279 --> 00:05:19.939 three times meant to be fruitful and multiply, right? 00:05:21.139 --> 00:05:25.859 So over and over again, in contradistinction to the other flood stories, Genesis teaches 00:05:25.859 --> 00:05:31.239 us that God is the sovereign judge over all creation who saves the We're going to first talk about this in three phases. 00:05:39.139 --> 00:05:41.879 First, we're going to talk about the decreation of earth. 00:05:42.319 --> 00:05:43.839 Second, about the doesn't really refer to physical violence, 00:08:09.379 --> 00:08:11.900 although that's what we think of when we hear the word violence. 00:08:11.899 --> 00:08:16.419 But it refers to any kind of fundamental violation of the command to love one's neighbor, 00:08:16.899 --> 00:08:18.319 any kind of antisocial, 00:08:18.519 --> 00:08:18.959 you know, 00:08:19.039 --> 00:08:20.079 unneighborly behavior. 00:08:21.419 --> 00:08:21.799 And so, 00:08:21.979 --> 00:08:25.019 so the earth is filled with violence and no one is exempt. 00:08:25.099 --> 00:08:27.719 It says all flesh is indicted by
