extended passage. 00:03:26.180 --> 00:03:29.900 It starts on page 998 of your Pew Bibles. 00:03:29.900 --> 00:03:33.240 And we're going to be looking at four vignettes. 00:03:34.980 --> 00:03:42.879 And I want you to behold your King in His overwhelming and comprehensive authority. 00:03:43.360 --> 00:03:47.340 Each vignette points to an aspect of His authority. 00:03:47.939 --> 00:03:50.280 And Jesus has been exercising this. 00:03:50.400 --> 00:03:53.879 It's true of Him for the last 10 years of our life as a church. 00:03:53.879 --> 00:03:57.979 And will be true of Him for, Lord willing, chapter 4, 35-41. 00:04:19.680 --> 00:04:23.300 Because we've got so much to cover, I'm going to be summarizing these passages. 00:04:23.680 --> 00:04:25.279 So, here's what happens. 00:04:25.420 --> 00:04:29.500 Jesus and His disciples, they cross over the Sea of Galilee. 00:04:29.860 --> 00:04:32.519 Jesus has an appointment in Gentile country. 00:04:32.519 --> 00:04:38.199 Well, suddenly, while they're crossing, this overwhelming and incredibly threatening windstorm hits them. 00:04:38.599 --> 00:04:41.120 The disciples, they start flipping out. 00:04:42.599 --> 00:04:44.779 Jesus is asleep. 00:04:44.779 --> 00:04:49.259 They wake Him up. 00:04:50.659 --> 00:04:55.959 And immediately, He commands the wind and the waves to stop. 00:04:56.439 --> 00:05:00.679 And immediately, the wind and the waves obey Him. 00:05:01.959 --> 00:05:06.939 His disciples are now more afraid because of the one who's in the boat with them. 00:05:08.219 --> 00:05:11.319 Let me point out some details here. 00:05:11.319 --> 00:05:18.699 In verse 35, what you need to see is that it's Jesus who initiates the trip across the Sea of Galilee. 00:05:19.259 --> 00:05:23.079 There's someone waiting for Him in the region of the Gerasenes. 00:05:25.899 --> 00:05:27.699 And that person is a demoniac. 00:05:29.779 --> 00:05:32.480 In verse 37, this massive storm hits. 00:05:33.259 --> 00:05:36.139 And the boat's filling up with water. 00:05:36.139 --> 00:05:43.479 Has anybody been on water in a boat and water's now filling up in your boat? 00:05:43.560 --> 00:05:44.039 I have. 00:05:44.279 --> 00:05:45.099 I flipped out. 00:05:46.300 --> 00:05:47.819 This is an existential threat. 00:05:49.439 --> 00:05:52.360 But Jesus, verse 38, is asleep. 00:05:53.199 --> 00:05:55.360 Now, how can Jesus be asleep? 00:05:56.959 --> 00:06:01.339 Either His ministry schedule was very difficult and He's so tired. 00:06:01.459 --> 00:06:03.439 It doesn't matter what's going on outside. 00:06:03.879 --> 00:06:05.339 He just needs to rest. 00:06:05.339 --> 00:06:09.639 Or, this poses no threat to Him. 00:06:11.339 --> 00:06:12.339 It's the latter. 00:06:14.099 --> 00:06:18.759 This windstorm and these waves, with all the water filling up the boat, 00:06:18.879 --> 00:06:22.059 it poses no threat to Him. 00:06:23.579 --> 00:06:26.919 Contrast with the disciples who, at least four of them, 00:06:26.979 --> 00:06:29.839 are seasoned fishermen on this same body of water. 00:06:30.039 --> 00:06:30.699 They say to Him, 00:06:30.779 --> 00:06:33.439 Teacher, do you not care? 00:06:33.439 --> 00:06:36.279 That we are perishing. 00:06:37.660 --> 00:06:39.879 They're thinking that the storm is greater than Jesus. 00:06:41.160 --> 00:06:42.719 We don't know what they want Him to do. 00:06:42.920 --> 00:06:43.740 He's sleeping there. 00:06:43.800 --> 00:06:45.439 It's like, Jesus, we need You to bail water. 00:06:46.079 --> 00:06:47.060 We don't know what they're thinking. 00:06:47.060 --> 00:06:50.180 But here's what I'm thinking. 00:06:51.480 --> 00:06:52.819 We've all been there. 00:06:54.439 --> 00:06:55.680 Crisis hits. 00:06:55.680 --> 00:06:59.360 And instead of faith, there's fear. 00:06:59.360 --> 00:07:02.519 And it shows up in a question like this. 00:07:02.639 --> 00:07:05.240 Sometimes you actually say it. 00:07:05.500 --> 00:07:07.220 Other times you're afraid to say it. 00:07:07.900 --> 00:07:08.980 It's something like this. 00:07:10.439 --> 00:07:11.680 Do you not care? 00:07:11.680 --> 00:07:14.620 God, do you not care? 00:07:14.620 --> 00:07:19.439 Do you not care that this is happening? 00:07:22.439 --> 00:07:26.439 These disciples ask a question that, let's be honest, 00:07:26.900 --> 00:07:29.600 all of us ask when things get hard. 00:07:30.660 --> 00:07:31.980 They feel helpless. 00:07:32.980 --> 00:07:34.399 They're hopeless. 00:07:34.399 --> 00:07:39.479 Because they're in a humanly impossible situation. 00:07:40.500 --> 00:07:43.259 None of them can stop what's happening. 00:07:45.500 --> 00:07:47.379 Verse 39 is the surprise. 00:07:48.259 --> 00:07:49.159 Jesus wakes up. 00:07:49.439 --> 00:07:51.219 I don't know what you're like when you wake up, 00:07:51.560 --> 00:07:54.659 but my first instinct isn't to command creation. 00:07:58.219 --> 00:08:01.279 Jesus rebukes the wind, speaks to the sea, 00:08:01.279 --> 00:08:02.239 peace be still, 00:08:02.240 --> 00:08:05.920 and immediately the wind ceases 00:08:05.920 --> 00:08:08.400 and the sea is as smooth as glass. 00:08:08.540 --> 00:08:12.079 Anybody been up north to a Wisconsin lake 00:08:12.079 --> 00:08:12.980 early in the morning 00:08:12.980 --> 00:08:16.720 and the top of the water is as smooth as glass? 00:08:18.300 --> 00:08:19.519 That's what's going on. 00:08:20.319 --> 00:08:21.160 Smooth as glass. 00:08:22.360 --> 00:08:23.180 Immediate obedience. 00:08:25.519 --> 00:08:27.280 Has anybody been down to the lake so afraid? 00:08:52.079 --> 00:08:54.079 Do you still not have faith? 00:08:55.419 --> 00:08:56.960 Throughout these four vignettes, 00:08:56.960 --> 00:08:59.460 there's this contrast between fear 00:09:20.799 --> 00:09:22.340 of his power and authority, 00:09:23.840 --> 00:09:25.659 the disciples in the boat 00:09:25.659 --> 00:09:27.399 look to each other and say, 00:09:27.500 --> 00:09:30.100 who is this? 00:09:30.159 --> 00:09:32.399 That even the wind and the waves obey him. 00:09:33.039 --> 00:09:34.019 Who is this? 00:09:34.720 --> 00:09:36.439 So here's the point of this vignette. 00:09:37.399 --> 00:09:39.679 Jesus has full authority 00:09:39.679 --> 00:09:41.620 over all creation. 00:09:41.620 --> 00:09:43.519 And if you looked up passages like 00:09:43.519 --> 00:09:45.080 John 1, 1-3, 00:09:45.480 --> 00:09:47.519 Colossians 1, 15-20, 00:09:47.919 --> 00:09:49.399 Hebrews 1, 1-3, 00:09:49.639 --> 00:09:50.940 you will quickly realize 00:09:50.940 --> 00:09:52.399 that the second person of the Trinity, 00:09:52.659 --> 00:09:53.659 this isn't the first time 00:09:53.659 --> 00:09:54.899 he has spoken to creation. 00:09:56.039 --> 00:09:58.100 In fact, he upholds the universe 00:09:58.100 --> 00:09:59.240 with the word of his power. 00:10:01.659 --> 00:10:03.019 So who is this guy? 00:10:04.539 --> 00:10:05.019 Well, 00:10:05.799 --> 00:10:06.740 it's the whole reason 00:10:06.740 --> 00:10:08.100 why the Gospel of Mark was written. 00:10:08.240 --> 00:10:09.279 This is the Son of God. 00:10:09.279 --> 00:10:11.139 Totally God. --> 00:10:19.620 to stop. 00:10:21.360 --> 00:10:22.459 Behold your king 00:10:22.459 --> 00:10:26.199 in his overwhelming authority 00:10:26.199 --> 00:10:27.620 over creation. 00:10:29.319 --> 00:10:30.419 Does he not care? 00:10:30.419 --> 00:10:35.379 He stopped it. 00:10:36.600 --> 00:10:37.779 Of course he cares. 00:10:39.279 --> 00:10:40.159 The second vignette 00:10:40.159 --> 00:10:42.419 is his authority 00:10:42.419 --> 00:10:44.039 over demons. 00:10:44.639 --> 00:10:45.459 And this vignette 00:10:45.459 --> 00:10:46.379 is chapter 5, 00:10:46.419 --> 00:10:47.339 verses 1-20. 00:10:47.500 --> 00:10:48.939 It's the longest, 00:10:49.139 --> 00:10:50.600 most extended vignette 00:10:50.600 --> 00:10:52.659 in this four-pack. 00:10:53.620 --> 00:10:55.259 So let me just summarize it for you. 00:10:56.120 --> 00:10:57.279 Jesus and his disciples 00:10:57.279 --> 00:10:58.720 arrive to the other side 00:10:58.720 --> 00:11:00.059 of the Sea of Galilee. 00:11:06.379 they arrive 00:11:06.379 --> 00:11:08.140 in Gentile country. 00:11:08.280 --> 00:11:09.320 You see that in verse 35 00:11:09.320 --> 00:11:10.720 in the region 00:11:10.720 --> 00:11:11.780 of the Gerasenes. 00:11:13.259 --> 00:11:14.520 And Jesus is immediately 00:11:14.520 --> 00:11:15.800 met by a demoniac. 00:11:16.420 --> 00:11:17.140 And what we learn 00:11:17.140 --> 00:11:18.680 is that this is not a man 00:11:18.680 --> 00:11:20.900 possessed by just one demon. 00:11:21.640 --> 00:11:22.879 We learn in verse 9 00:11:22.879 --> 00:11:23.560 that he's possessed 00:11:53.640 --> 00:11:55.080 to go into 00:11:55.080 --> 00:11:56.840 a herd of pigs. 00:11:57.020 --> 00:11:58.060 Jesus gives them permission. 00:11:58.059 --> 00:11:59.339 The demoniac is
