by no condemnation 00:09:00.519 --> 00:09:02.680 and exactly how that works out in our lives. 00:09:02.679 --> 00:09:08.199 So let's think together a bit more about what condemnation means or no condemnation. 00:09:09.399 --> 00:09:12.579 Think with me about what kind of condemnation Paul is talking about. 00:09:13.279 --> 00:09:16.199 I think you can identify at least two kinds of condemnation. 00:09:16.359 --> 00:09:21.059 So firstly, think about somebody in the dock in a criminal court. 00:09:21.299 --> 00:09:21.439 Right. 00:09:21.840 --> 00:09:23.060 They've been found guilty. 00:09:23.800 --> 00:09:28.200 And they are about to be condemned to be punished for the crimes that they have committed. 00:09:29.380 --> 00:09:34.200 Now in our new TV era, if it's a particularly heinous crime, you get to watch the judgment 00:09:34.200 --> 00:09:38.280 on TV as the judge in his funny wig pronounces judgment on the guilty. 00:09:38.440 --> 00:09:43.280 He will read out a list of the crimes which they've committed and will tell them how many 00:09:43.280 --> 00:09:47.180 years they are due to spend in jail and how long it will be before they are eligible 00:09:47.180 --> 00:09:47.900 for parole. 00:09:48.780 --> 00:09:51.400 That is condemnation. 00:09:51.440 --> 00:09:51.740 Right. 00:09:52.320 --> 00:09:53.980 The condemnation of a judge. 00:09:54.820 --> 00:09:56.120 That's the most common one, isn't it? 00:09:56.300 --> 00:09:58.020 But there is another kind of condemnation. 00:09:58.200 --> 00:10:02.280 So think not so much now about a courtroom, but think about a school room. 00:10:03.120 --> 00:10:03.220 Right. 00:10:03.260 --> 00:10:08.540 This school, they've got a student who pays no attention, who never does their homework, 00:10:09.040 --> 00:10:10.220 who messes around. 00:10:11.020 --> 00:10:12.440 They fall in with a bad crowd. 00:10:12.560 --> 00:10:13.520 They fail their exams. 00:10:13.660 --> 00:10:18.800 They bounce out of school with no experience, no references, no qualifications, no sense of direction. 00:10:18.799 --> 00:10:21.519 They find it almost impossible to get a job. 00:10:21.519 --> 00:10:23.399 They have no clue what to do with themselves. 00:10:23.399 --> 00:10:41.039 Now, you might say, you probably wouldn't put it this way, but you might be able to say that their bad performance at school has condemned them to a life of frustration and lostness, that they could have been spared if they'd only changed their ways at school. 00:10:41.039 --> 00:11:11.019 They are condemned. 00:11:11.019 --> 00:11:12.240 They're condemned for ourselves and not for him. 00:11:12.559 --> 00:11:14.179 Romans put it like this in chapter one. 00:11:14.299 --> 00:11:17.779 Although we knew God, we neither glorified him nor gave thanks to him. 00:11:18.399 --> 00:11:20.699 But in our thinking, we became futile. 00:11:21.500 --> 00:11:29.139 And for that, we are condemned, condemned to die, condemned to be eternally separated from the blessings and kindnesses of God. 00:11:29.139 --> 00:11:34.039 But we also face another kind of condemnation that Romans talks about. 00:11:34.539 --> 00:11:47.639 God not only pronounces a future judgment in the court of God, but he also talks about a present judgment, about a being handed over to the futility of life lived without him. 00:11:47.639 --> 00:11:58.899 So he says that we are condemned to live a futility where we are unable even to live up to our own moral standards and expectations, let alone God's. 00:11:59.519 --> 00:12:03.419 We find ourselves thinking and behaving in all sorts of ways of which we're ashamed. 00:12:04.559 --> 00:12:10.319 Over time, we find that bitterness and anger grow in our hearts more easily than patience or kindness. 00:12:10.320 --> 00:12:17.140 You know, life becomes frustrating and we're sort of condemned to live in the mess that we make. 00:12:18.540 --> 00:12:21.120 We know only too well, don't we, what that feels like. 00:12:21.940 --> 00:12:28.100 And the question for us as we come to Romans chapter eight, verse one is when Paul says no condemnation, what kind of condemnation is he talking about? 00:12:28.100 --> 00:12:35.600 Does he mean, listen, you are free in the court of God from final judgments? 00:12:36.159 --> 00:12:37.060 That's justification. 00:12:38.360 --> 00:12:44.680 Or does he mean you are free to live a life now today in a way that pleases God? 00:12:45.040 --> 00:12:48.420 That would be holiness or sanctification. 00:12:49.200 --> 00:12:49.820 Which is it? 00:12:51.279 --> 00:12:57.320 If you've been with us for any time in the series on the book of Romans, you'll know that the first one is certainly true. 00:12:57.320 --> 00:12:58.620 We've seen it over and over, haven't we? 00:12:58.700 --> 00:13:00.660 Romans chapter three, verse 23 says, 00:13:00.940 --> 00:13:09.720 All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 00:13:10.620 --> 00:13:12.260 Right at the heart of the book of Romans. 00:13:13.200 --> 00:13:19.520 That God the Son in human flesh takes our sin and bears its punishment while gifting to us his righteousness. 00:13:19.960 --> 00:13:25.580 So that in the dock before God, we are declared not guilty instead of guilty. 00:13:25.580 --> 00:13:28.300 Because Jesus has taken our punishment. 00:13:29.300 --> 00:13:31.060 Even our passage this morning, look down at it. 00:13:31.139 --> 00:13:32.780 Verse three describes this. 00:13:32.879 --> 00:13:36.100 Jesus making the sin offering, he says. 00:13:36.720 --> 00:13:42.360 Dying in our place so that verse four, the righteous requirement of the law, the standard for judgment day might be met. 00:13:43.320 --> 00:13:44.639 We are justified. 00:13:44.639 --> 00:14:03.840 But, and here's the thing for us this morning, I want to suggest to you that really Paul's focus, not his sole focus, but his emphasis at least, is not just freedom from this future condemnation, but is a freedom now, no condemnation to live a pointless, fruitless life. 00:14:03.840 --> 00:14:08.540 It's freedom to live a life that pleases God. 00:14:09.019 --> 00:14:12.960 He's taking his aim, if you like, at that second lie that we were talking about. 00:14:13.600 --> 00:14:17.259 In other words, Romans 8 is saying to you and me, hey, listen, struggling Christian. 00:14:17.899 --> 00:14:21.540 Hey, Christian who's losing battles day in, day out with sin. 00:14:21.899 --> 00:14:26.060 Listen, Christian who's gone cold and who feels weary and distant from God. 00:14:26.059 --> 00:14:31.519 You, yes, you, whoever you are this morning, no condemnation. 00:14:33.639 --> 00:14:42.479 Now, if you look at the passage carefully, you'll see that Paul makes that point by perpetually contrasting life before being a Christian with life after becoming a Christian. 00:14:43.299 --> 00:14:47.859 So he describes life before as being life according to the flesh, he calls it. 00:14:48.379 --> 00:14:53.379 Where flesh is not supposed to be your skin and bones, it's rather shorthand for life lived for ourselves. 00:14:53.379 --> 00:14:56.340 It's the life of selfish sin, if you like. 00:14:57.000 --> 00:15:03.700 And he contrasts life in the flesh with new life by the spirit, a life that's led by God and lived to please him. 00:15:03.980 --> 00:15:04.820 Look at verse five. 00:15:04.919 --> 00:15:05.840 This is how he puts it. 00:15:06.240 --> 00:15:10.439 Those who live according to the flesh have their mind set on what the flesh desires. 00:15:10.840 --> 00:15:15.799 But those who live in accordance with the spirit have Christian is not only justified from judgment to come. 00:16:22.080 --> 00:16:27.000 They are sanctified and made holy to live a life that pleases God now. 00:16:28.200 --> 00:16:31.700 Not as we saw overstate to you how important it is in your Christian life to be able to distinguish these two things and hold them together. 00:17:08.420 --> 00:17:08.599 Right? 00:17:08.599 --> 00:17:18.059 To distinguish justification, the declaration of not guilty in the face of final judgment, and sanctification that you are set free to live a holy life. 00:17:18.779 --> 00:17:22.199 Both of those are 00:18:05.240 Listen to how he puts it. 00:18:05.600 --> 00:18:15.240 And if anyone does not have the spirit of Christ, if they don't have the spirit enabling them to live a life that pleases God, if Those are great names, by the way. 00:19:08.460 --> 00:19:13.539 If you ever have two sons and you want to think of names, call one justification and one sanctification. 00:19:14.200 --> 00:19:14.380
