00:06:45.279 And we, as disciples of Jesus, need to reflect on what these things in our lives are that we hold so dearly, 00:06:45.600 --> 00:06:49.300 but they actually end up crippling us because we pursue becoming a professional rock climber. 00:07:03.199 --> 00:07:13.199 And I would use people to get to certain areas that I needed to climb certain routes to get better at climbing. 00:07:13.699 --> 00:07:18.599 And I would become, if I didn't get to climb a certain amount in the week, I would become grumpy. 00:07:18.779 --> 00:07:19.659 I'd become upset. 00:07:20.399 --> 00:07:24.480 I would ruin my day if I didn't perform well while I was rock climbing. 00:07:24.939 --> 00:07:28.680 I had this one drive, and I would worry constantly about it. 00:07:28.680 --> 00:07:34.019 See, if we all reflect on these things, there's things in our lives we constantly worry about. 00:07:35.100 --> 00:07:36.780 We have to be honest with ourselves. 00:07:37.560 --> 00:07:39.079 So where do we go from here? 00:07:39.180 --> 00:07:45.759 If this is the problem that Jesus presents us, that we are to live a certain way, not worrying about certain things, 00:07:46.360 --> 00:07:48.319 how do we go from here? 00:07:48.639 --> 00:07:53.759 Well, in order to understand this, we have to look at a whole of what Jesus is talking about here, 00:07:53.800 --> 00:07:55.639 what the Gospel of Matthew is talking about. 00:07:55.639 --> 00:07:58.120 We're right in the middle of the Sermon on the Mount. 00:07:58.939 --> 00:08:05.099 Jesus is sitting down with his disciples on a hill here, and he's talking to them, giving them life principles. 00:08:05.860 --> 00:08:11.479 The Sermon on the Mount can be called the New Testament law, because in the Old Testament there's a law as well. 00:08:12.399 --> 00:08:19.019 But it's not about fulfilling, hitting every, ticking every box, getting it all perfectly right. 00:08:19.019 --> 00:08:26.159 It's about something else, and it's about the heart behind of doing these things that Jesus is laying out here. 00:08:26.819 --> 00:08:28.359 And it's so easy to get this wrong. 00:08:28.479 --> 00:08:32.960 You read the Old Testament, you can see the Israelites getting it all wrong through the Old Testament. 00:08:34.340 --> 00:08:36.299 The Sermon on the Mount is the new law. 00:08:36.299 --> 00:08:42.539 And if we look at chapter 6, before coming up to the text we're looking at here, 00:08:42.659 --> 00:08:46.379 in the rest of chapter 6, Jesus talks about giving to the needy, 00:08:46.899 --> 00:08:49.699 but doing it in a way that you won't be praised. 00:08:50.699 --> 00:08:55.679 He talks about doing prayer, and he gives the Lord's Prayer here, as we'll say later in the service. 00:08:55.679 --> 00:09:00.799 But he says don't do it in a way that you want to be heard about your praying. 00:09:01.579 --> 00:09:03.319 And he also says to forgive. 00:09:03.819 --> 00:09:04.819 He talks about unforgiveness. 00:09:05.599 --> 00:09:07.019 And then he talks about fasting. 00:09:07.799 --> 00:09:12.620 And the thing that he talks about here is that you should not fast in order to be seen. 00:09:13.599 --> 00:09:15.500 You should be only seen by your Heavenly Father. 00:09:15.959 --> 00:09:18.979 And then he talks about laying up your treasures, which is self-sufficiency. 00:09:19.979 --> 00:09:25.000 See, when worrying becomes consuming, or when you end up serving these things, 00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:28.539 it becomes idolatry, and that's what Jesus is getting at here. 00:09:28.980 --> 00:09:31.580 The 00:11:12.220 But what about the Christians around the world who live in poverty, 00:11:13.159 --> 00:11:15.960 who live in constant want of food? 00:11:15.960 --> 00:11:21.900 How can we talk so freely about this, but then forget about them? 00:11:22.680 --> 00:11:24.139 It's a good point to bring up, 00:11:24.560 --> 00:11:27.580 because it's something that we should reflect on. 00:11:27.900
