topics. 00:00:40.120 --> 00:00:49.379 And all of the research actually suggests that all of this polarization and division is only going to get worse in the foreseeable future. 00:00:49.920 --> 00:00:57.760 And as Christians, we believe unequivocally that the gospel alone has the power to unite people. 00:00:57.759 --> 00:01:00.619 From every tribe, tongue, and nation. 00:01:00.619 --> 00:01:05.840 The problem is, is that all of these issues are also tearing the church apart. 00:01:05.840 --> 00:01:14.780 So before we can have any hope of sharing or embodying the gospel for the world to see, 00:01:14.859 --> 00:01:20.340 we really need to take a hard look at all of the ways that we may have forgotten it ourselves. 00:01:20.340 --> 00:01:27.260 I'll primarily be talking to --> 00:01:38.120 Hopefully, this is an opportunity for you to listen in on a conversation that I think needs to be happening within the church all around the world. 00:01:38.120 --> 00:01:42.960 We're going to be talking about this by looking at the story of Peter and Cornelius. 00:01:43.040 --> 00:01:44.620 We just read that in Acts chapter 10. 00:01:45.320 --> 00:01:52.620 And even though this is a story about a conversion, it's about Cornelius and his family converting to Christ and being baptized, 00:01:53.280 --> 00:01:59.580 the focus of the narrative is really on Peter and Peter's change of heart, 00:01:59.580 --> 00:02:06.900 his change of attitude in the way he sees Cornelius and other people like him. 00:02:06.900 --> 00:02:15.120 Because for most of his life, Peter saw people like Cornelius and people like him as the enemy, as the other. 00:02:16.540 --> 00:02:17.980 And he repents of that. 00:02:19.080 --> 00:02:22.040 So we're going to ask two questions as we look at this --> 00:03:15.080 Amen. 00:03:15.080 --> 00:03:20.640 So, the first question we want to ask as we look at the story of Cornelius in Acts chapter 10 is, 00:03:20.719 --> 00:03:23.500 what makes division inevitable? 00:03:23.760 --> 00:03:28.340 Why is this something that happens all the time everywhere in societies, ancient and modern? 00:03:28.820 --> 00:03:31.360 In Acts chapter 10, we meet this man named Cornelius. 00:03:31.500 --> 00:03:34.140 And Cornelius is a Roman centurion in Caesarea. 00:03:34.360 --> 00:03:37.740 Caesarea was a center of Roman administration. 00:03:38.200 --> 00:03:41.060 The Jews hated Caesarea and everything that it represented. 00:03:41.060 --> 00:03:48.759 Cornelius is described in verse 2 as a devout man who feared God with all his household, 00:03:49.759 --> 00:03:54.539 gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God. 00:03:54.659 --> 00:04:01.360 Cornelius is a man who is earnestly desiring to know the true God, the God worshipped by the Jews. 00:04:02.640 --> 00:04:07.740 And so, God comes to Cornelius in a vision and tells him to send for Peter the apostle. 00:04:07.740 --> 00:04:15.820 He says, send your men, invite Peter to come and stay with you so that he can tell you how to have a relationship with me. 00:04:17.439 --> 00:04:22.600 And this seems to be the answer to all of Cornelius' hopes and prayers. 00:04:22.740 --> 00:04:24.460 God said, your prayers have been heard. 00:04:25.300 --> 00:04:25.980 Send for Peter. 00:04:26.439 --> 00:04:27.400 He'll tell you what to do. 00:04:27.720 --> 00:04:30.460 And then the next day, God also gives a vision to Peter. 00:04:30.680 --> 00:04:34.960 And he tells Peter in this vision to accept Cornelius' invitation. 00:04:34.959 --> 00:04:39.299 So, Peter travels to Caesarea, to the home of Cornelius. 00:04:39.519 --> 00:04:46.479 And as Peter walks into the front door of his house, he looks around and he realizes that all of these people, 00:04:46.599 --> 00:04:48.899 as he knew they would be, are Gentiles. 00:04:49.799 --> 00:04:51.919 They're Caesarean Gentiles. 00:04:52.879 --> 00:04:53.019 Right? 00:04:53.079 --> 00:04:57.120 And we know this because one of the first things he says is, in verse 28, 00:04:57.120 --> 00:05:03.480 you yourselves know how unlawful it is for a Jew to associate with or visit anyone of another nation. 00:05:04.259 --> 00:05:04.379 Right? 00:05:04.459 --> 00:05:09.439 In other words, Peter's saying, I just got to be clear here. 00:05:09.899 --> 00:05:18.720 All of my life, since I was a little child, it has been drilled into my head that I need to keep myself ceremonially clean. 00:05:18.899 --> 00:05:21.199 Meaning I can't eat unclean food. 00:05:21.199 --> 00:05:25.180 I can't associate with unclean people. 00:05:26.379 --> 00:05:35.039 He says, you know, you just need to know it's against the law for me to even be here, in your house, talking to you right now. 00:05:35.500 --> 00:05:38.319 Because this itself makes me unclean. 00:05:39.259 --> 00:05:40.919 And all my life, I've been taught that. 00:05:40.920 --> 00:05:44.920 And here's what I want us to see first in this passage. 00:05:46.040 --> 00:05:52.400 This kind of division, this kind of thinking about yourself versus other people, 00:05:52.920 --> 00:05:56.360 isn't just unique to Jews and Gentiles. 00:05:57.439 --> 00:05:58.120 Right? 00:05:58.180 --> 00:06:04.020 This is partly an outworking of the Old Testament law, which Jesus came to fulfill. 00:06:04.860 --> 00:06:09.200 But it's also something that is hardwired into every human being. 00:06:09.199 --> 00:06:11.620 It's hardwired into human nature. 00:06:11.759 --> 00:06:14.879 And what we see as we look at societies all around the world, including our own, 00:06:15.159 --> 00:06:19.699 is that division and this way of thinking comes naturally to human beings. 00:06:20.519 --> 00:06:26.000 If you want to do what is most natural to you, this is how human beings naturally behave. 00:06:26.099 --> 00:06:27.439 It's the path of least resistance. 00:06:27.740 --> 00:06:28.939 So we want to ask, why? 00:06:29.919 --> 00:06:32.879 And the answer is the sorting hat. 00:06:33.699 --> 00:06:35.860 Not the kind of sorting hat you see in Harry Potter. 00:06:35.860 --> 00:06:41.939 The kind of sorting hat that our brains evolved to utilize. 00:06:42.699 --> 00:06:45.900 Our brains evolved to do three things. 00:06:46.100 --> 00:06:51.060 Number one, to see people not as individuals, but as members of a group. 00:06:52.420 --> 00:06:52.639 Right? 00:06:52.680 --> 00:06:55.360 So you're hardwired to group people. 00:06:55.360 --> 00:06:59.379 To group them and categorize them. 00:06:59.720 --> 00:07:02.980 To create taxonomies of people in your life. 00:07:04.319 --> 00:07:10.259 Furthermore, our brains are hardwired to group people into two basic categories. 00:07:11.040 --> 00:07:12.620 Us, people like me. 00:07:12.939 --> 00:07:15.259 And them, everybody else. 00:07:15.259 --> 00:07:22.259 And number three, our brains are hardwired to do this with the least amount of time and energy necessary. 00:07:22.980 --> 00:07:25.379 In other words, we are cognitive misers. 00:07:26.480 --> 00:07:31.620 As soon as we can group and categorize somebody, we are ready to move on. 00:07:31.959 --> 00:07:37.759 And your brain does not want to spend one more moment of time, one more unit of energy, 00:07:37.959 --> 00:07:41.899 than it absolutely has to in order to make those determinations. 00:07:41.899 --> 00:07:48.299 And because of this, we have a sorting hat that is always in operation 00:07:48.299 --> 00:07:52.239 when we are meeting new people or around people we don't know very well. 00:07:52.899 --> 00:07:58.699 And the way that your sorting hat makes these determinations is dramatically influenced 00:07:58.699 --> 00:08:03.399 by things like your upbringing, your education, your life experience, 00:08:03.699 --> 00:08:06.819 and all manner of social and cultural factors. 00:08:06.819 --> 00:08:10.719 So when you meet somebody for the first time, when you see somebody for the first time, 00:08:10.959 --> 00:08:12.599 your sorting hat is activated. 00:08:13.980 --> 00:08:14.420 Right? 00:08:14.519 --> 00:08:16.860 And it begins looking for signals. 00:08:17.079 --> 00:08:19.120 It goes into kind of scanning mode. 00:08:20.379 --> 00:08:26.719 It's assessing, and it's looking for signals to let it know which group that person belongs in. make all kinds of assumptions about that person, 00:08:54.039 --> 00:08:57.259 to fill in the blanks, if you will. 00:08:57.259 --> 00:09:00.580 You assume things about what class they must be in. 00:09:02.500 --> 00:09:06.659 You assume things about their beliefs, what they must think about this or that. 00:09:07.539 --> 00:09:11.419 You assume things about their values, what must really matter to them. 00:09:12.100 --> 00:09:14.279 Ultimately, your brain is trying to answer this question. 00:09:14.480 --> 00:09:16.279 Is this person like me? 00:09:17.620 --> 00:09:19.039 Or are they other? 00:09:19.399 --> 00:09:22.500 Are they in the us category or the them category? 00:09:22.500 --> 00:09:28.100 And usually, research shows that within a few seconds, all of that happens, 00:09:28.559 --> 00:09:31.440 your brain delivers the verdict, and moves on. 00:09:32.639 --> 00:09:32.980 Right? 00:09:33.080 --> 00:09:36.440 So as quick as a handshake, that person's in a box. 00:09:37.179 --> 00:09:39.580 And probably, you're in a box. 00:09:40.759 --> 00:09:42.860 And so we have to ask, why do we do this? 00:09:44.019 --> 00:09:47.919 And the reason has to do with threat detection and survival. 00:09:47.919 --> 00:09:51.219 You know, long ago, if you had an effective sorting hat, 00:09:51.279 --> 00:09:55.539 if you could quickly determine who was in your tribe and who was not in your tribe, 00:09:55.639 --> 00:10:00.379 that theoretically increased your chances of survival and passing down your genes. 00:10:00.799 --> 00:10:05.379 So Peter is standing in this living room with Cornelius and his family, 00:10:05.559 --> 00:10:08.519 and Peter's sorting hat is going nuts. 00:10:08.839 --> 00:10:10.819 It is sounding the alarm. 00:10:10.820 --> 00:10:18.520 You know, Gentile, common, unclean, other, enemy, right? 00:10:18.660 --> 00:10:20.379 That is sounding in his head. 00:10:20.420 --> 00:10:21.700 And this is why he says what he says. 00:10:22.040 --> 00:10:22.900 You just need to know. 00:10:23.700 --> 00:10:26.300 Everything in me is saying, get out. 00:10:28.680 --> 00:10:30.860 So now we think about what are some modern examples. 00:10:31.160 --> 00:10:34.420 Most of us haven't grown up with the kind of Jew-Gentile tension, 00:10:34.540 --> 00:10:39.560 that kind of racial ethnic tension in the way that they experienced it in the early church. 00:10:39.559 --> 00:10:43.179 But we have grown up in a society with a lot of racial tension. 00:10:43.279 --> 00:10:45.679 That's one of the most obvious applications of this. 00:10:46.019 --> 00:10:48.039 This weekend, we're celebrating Juneteenth, 00:10:48.139 --> 00:10:51.599 which is, of course, the celebration of emancipation, right? 00:10:52.019 --> 00:10:55.099 A number of slaves in Galveston being set free 00:10:55.099 --> 00:10:58.899 because of the Emancipation Proclamation and the end of the war. 00:10:59.119 --> 00:11:02.699 But as we know, and we've talked about this a lot over the last year, 00:11:03.159 --> 00:11:05.659 in particular, after slavery, that was Jim Crow. 00:11:05.979 --> 00:11:08.039 After Jim Crow, there came mass incarceration, 00:11:08.039 --> 00:11:13.839 all leading to the ongoing conflict and unrest that we have today. 00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:15.480 And we ask, well, why is that the case? 00:11:16.659 --> 00:11:21.219 Well, I mean, when you have an entire population of black-skinned Africans 00:11:21.219 --> 00:11:24.799 forcibly brought to the country as slaves over several hundred years, 00:11:25.120 --> 00:11:28.319 and then when that is paired with post-Enlightenment pseudoscience 00:11:28.319 --> 00:11:33.019 that justifies slavery by creating the modern conception, 00:11:33.019 --> 00:11:34.960 the modern taxonomy of race, 00:11:35.340 --> 00:11:37.679 and then claiming that lighter-skinned Europeans 00:11:37.679 --> 00:11:40.240 are inherently superior to darker-skinned Africans, 00:11:40.679 --> 00:11:42.759 when that takes hold in the imagination, 00:11:43.379 --> 00:11:47.139 that has a powerful and lasting impact on your sorting hat, 00:11:47.759 --> 00:11:49.960 on the sorting hats of everyone in our society. 00:11:50.659 --> 00:11:50.899 Right? 00:11:50.919 --> 00:11:52.500 It begins to skew your perception. 00:11:52.500 --> 00:11:55.960 It shapes how you make 00:12:10.860 based on skin color remains. 00:12:11.299 --> 00:12:13.440 And as much as we want it to not remain, 00:12:13.779 --> 00:12:16.960 as much as we consciously are committed against that way And your sorting hat will immediately think, 00:13:51.259 --> 00:13:53.540 either this person is a part of my tribe, 00:13:54.019 --> 00:13:56.420 because they use the same word that I would use, national identity alone. 00:19:09.759 --> 00:19:11.599 Right? 00:19:11.700 --> 00:19:13.839 And so people are starting to ask hard questions. 00:19:14.099 --> 00:19:15.940 Well, who gets to define is God testing him? 00:20:50.559 --> 00:20:51.779 And the voice responds, 00:20:52.559 --> 00:20:54.200 what God has made clean, 00:20:55.559 --> 00:20:57.099 do not call common. 00:20:57.099 -->
