moment to turn there. 00:00:14.919 --> 00:00:29.980 But as we're looking at this text, I'll just say up front, we're going to be thinking about it somewhat broadly with the topic of missions as it pertains to the Old Testament and as it relates to God's overarching redemptive plan throughout the scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:38.700 Many of us have asked questions before like, did God adjust his plan to save Gentiles or has he always planned that? 00:00:39.700 --> 00:00:46.879 Another way that can be asked is, does the Old Testament ever actually talk about God planning to save Gentiles? 00:00:47.519 --> 00:00:55.179 And on top of that, you might ask, did God save Gentiles in the Old Testament or was it merely talk or hinted at in something that didn't happen until New Testament? 00:00:55.920 --> 00:00:58.119 And furthermore, why does God save? 00:00:58.200 --> 00:01:01.500 To what end or what purpose is he saving has chosen? 00:01:02.500 --> 00:01:08.000 So this is a sampling of some of the things we're going to be talking about today through our text, Isaiah 56. 00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:24.079 So turning there, verse 1, thus says the Lord, Isaiah writes, thus says the Lord, keep justice and do righteousness for soon my salvation will come and my righteousness be revealed. 00:01:24.819 --> 00:01:29.379 Blessed is the man who does this and is the son of man who keeps and holds it fast. 00:01:29.379 --> 00:01:35.500 Let not the foreigner who has joined himself to the Lord say, the Lord will surely separate me from his people. 00:01:35.920 --> 00:01:39.259 And let not the eunuch say, behold, I am a dry tree. 00:01:40.140 --> 00:01:46.799 But thus says the Lord to the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths, who choose the things that please me and hold fast my covenant. 00:01:46.799 --> 00:01:53.920 I will give in my house and within my walls a monument and a name better than sons and daughters. 00:01:54.920 --> 00:01:58.780 I will give them an everlasting name that shall not be cut off. 00:01:59.780 --> 00:02:06.239 And the foreigners who join themselves to the Lord to minister to him, to love the name of the Lord and to called a house of prayer for all peoples. 00:02:26.139 --> 00:02:34.780 The Lord God who gathers the outcasts of Israel declares, I will yet gather others to him besides those already gathered. 00:02:36.439 --> 00:02:38.719 So just real quickly here, a little context. 00:02:38.719 --> 00:02:43.560 Again, Clay preached on Isaiah 40 last week and did most of the grunt work for me in laying that. 00:02:44.240 --> 00:02:48.659 But I just wanted to note two things that are pertinent for our discussion today. 00:02:49.560 --> 00:02:54.560 One, it is important to note that Isaiah is a contemporary of Hosea and Micah. 00:02:54.780 --> 00:02:57.699 And if you're familiar with Isaiah, if you're familiar with Hosea and Micah, 00:02:58.360 --> 00:03:02.879 you recall that those prophets are constantly calling out Israel and Judah for their sin, 00:03:03.159 --> 00:03:06.020 namely injustice and a lack of righteousness. 00:03:06.020 --> 00:03:08.520 They're worshiping foreign gods. 00:03:09.900 --> 00:03:15.980 At this point, it was a nation that exploited the poor and the vulnerable while worshiping these false gods 00:03:15.980 --> 00:03:20.120 and only giving external ritualistic worship to Yahweh, 00:03:20.600 --> 00:03:23.680 not true single-minded devotion as he has called for. 00:03:24.700 --> 00:03:25.780 So that's important to note. 00:03:25.860 --> 00:03:28.719 And the other thing I wanted to note contextually before we move on 00:03:28.719 --> 00:03:33.699 is that we need to bear in mind that Israel and Judah are on the verge of collapse. 00:03:34.479 --> 00:03:36.520 God has been announcing his judgment. 00:03:36.800 --> 00:03:40.860 It's been withheld at times through the prayers of Hezekiah and other intercessions. 00:03:41.439 --> 00:03:46.079 But nonetheless, it is on the way, and the Babylonians will drag them away into captivity, into exile. 00:03:47.060 --> 00:03:50.379 And they're going to be in exile for a while, and there's going to be three dispersions. 00:03:50.379 --> 00:03:54.680 So we want to keep that in mind as we read this text with all that God's saying in it, 00:03:54.759 --> 00:03:56.799 all that God is planning, all that God is doing. 00:03:58.400 --> 00:04:01.879 So just looking at verses 1 through 2, and I've subtitled this section, 00:04:01.960 --> 00:04:03.199 A Call to Righteousness. 00:04:03.680 --> 00:04:06.599 And I'll read it again briefly, but we see here the Lord says, 00:04:06.599 --> 00:04:26.639 So this is not works-based salvation. 00:04:27.540 --> 00:04:29.699 Paul's very clear on this in Galatians. 00:04:29.860 --> 00:04:31.480 Tyler read this text for us this morning. 00:04:31.560 --> 00:04:32.159 We didn't collaborate. 00:04:32.339 --> 00:04:33.100 That just worked out. 00:04:33.839 --> 00:04:34.899 But Paul writes, 00:04:34.899 --> 00:04:38.939 For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse. 00:04:39.759 --> 00:04:40.699 For it is written, 00:04:41.279 --> 00:04:45.599 Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all the things written in the book of the law and do them. 00:04:46.259 --> 00:04:50.219 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law. 00:04:50.739 --> 00:04:52.779 For the righteous shall live by faith. 00:04:53.019 --> 00:04:56.319 Galatians 3, verse 10 through 11. 00:04:57.759 --> 00:05:00.539 So Isaiah himself understood the logical flow of this. 00:05:00.539 --> 00:05:03.799 He understood regeneration leading to sanctification. 00:05:03.800 --> 00:05:05.819 In other words, we have to be made And Isaiah recognizes this, and we see that in chapter 1, verses 16 through 17, as he records the Lord. 00:05:18.939 --> 00:05:19.620 And the Lord said, 00:05:20.040 --> 00:05:20.900 Wash yourselves. --> 00:06:00.579 So what is God saying in our first two verses back in our primary text, Isaiah 56? 00:06:02.879 --> 00:06:07.639 He's saying that the true people of God will and should act like people of God. 00:06:08.119 --> 00:06:10.679 They should be godly as a result of their faith. 00:06:11.619 --> 00:06:12.719 God is just. 00:06:13.000 --> 00:06:14.099 Isaiah 61.8. 00:06:14.100 --> 00:06:17.020 So as his people, we too should act justly. 00:06:17.660 --> 00:06:18.900 God is righteous. 00:06:19.100 --> 00:06:20.760 Psalm 119.137. 00:06:21.580 --> 00:06:24.920 So as his people, we too should act righteously. 00:06:25.720 --> 00:06:26.740 Keeping justice. 00:06:26.920 --> 00:06:27.560 Doing righteousness. 00:06:28.879 --> 00:06:31.620 This is why God mentions the nearness of his kingdom. 00:06:32.860 --> 00:06:35.100 And arriving in the later half of verse 1, 00:06:35.200 --> 00:06:38.060 for soon my salvation will come and my righteousness be revealed. 00:06:38.820 --> 00:06:41.460 This serves as a reminder and an incentive. 00:06:42.520 --> 00:06:43.240 Hey, I'm coming. 00:06:43.240 --> 00:06:44.879 Let that incentivize you. 00:06:45.780 --> 00:06:50.139 In other that bears much fruit. 00:07:17.800 --> 00:07:19.620 For apart from me you can do nothing. 00:07:20.420 --> 00:07:21.579 That's John 15.5. 00:07:21.579 --> 00:07:28.039 So we cannot keep justice nor do righteousness apart from Christ by faith. 00:07:28.040 --> 00:07:32.040 So going back to our text, Isaiah 56, 00:07:32.560 --> 00:07:36.600 we see that God says all of this, justice and righteousness language, 00:07:36.680 --> 00:07:41.020 all of that is in relation to his covenant with Moses in verse 2, 00:07:41.140 --> 00:07:43.560 when he refers to those who keep the Sabbath. 00:07:45.500 --> 00:07:49.480 Keeping the Sabbath is the most important sign of the Mosaic covenant. 00:07:49.480 --> 00:07:51.780 Exodus 31.12. 00:07:51.900 --> 00:07:53.840 And the Lord said to Moses, 00:07:54.040 --> 00:07:56.240 you are to speak to the people of Israel and say, 00:07:56.819 --> 00:08:00.100 above all, you shall keep my Sabbaths. 00:08:00.439 --> 00:08:04.319 But this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, 00:08:04.319 --> 00:08:08.180 that you may know that I, the Lord, sanctify you. 00:08:09.040 --> 00:08:12.160 You shall keep the Sabbath because it is holy for you. 00:08:13.259 --> 00:08:15.580 Everyone who profanes it shall be put to death. 00:08:16.439 --> 00:08:17.800 So this is of vital importance. 00:08:17.899 --> 00:08:20.240 In other words, when an Israelite is looking at this text, 00:08:20.319 --> 00:08:22.000 they're not just hearing, oh, Sabbath law, 00:08:22.079 --> 00:08:23.519 they're hearing Mosaic covenant. 00:08:24.339 --> 00:08:26.159 Understanding this is in connection with covenant. 00:08:28.199 --> 00:08:30.759 So when we look at that, we've got to go, 00:08:30.839 --> 00:08:31.699 okay, well, what's going on? 00:08:31.779 --> 00:08:35.819 Well, it's an external sign like practicing righteousness and keeping justice. 00:08:36.019 --> 00:08:38.299 It's revealing what's going on internally. 00:08:38.299 --> 00:08:41.519 It's revealing that regeneration, that salvation, 00:08:42.259 --> 00:08:44.240 that demonstrates one's belief in God 00:08:44.240 --> 00:08:45.980 to provide and sustain him. 00:08:46.779 --> 00:08:48.740 It is an exercise of faith 00:08:48.740 --> 00:08:53.060 because keeping the Sabbath requires people to not work seven days a week 00:08:53.060 --> 00:08:55.860 despite whatever shortage of food or what have you, 00:08:55.899 --> 00:08:57.299 whatever problem they may face. 00:08:57.899 --> 00:09:01.500 In other words, it could potentially be a loss in the worldly sense 00:09:01.500 --> 00:09:03.639 when you're thinking about it pragmatically. 00:09:05.419 --> 00:09:07.460 So for them to give up a whole day of work 00:09:07.460 --> 00:09:09.899 in a time in which food is everything, right? 00:09:10.019 --> 00:09:13.240 Farming, harvesting, that's how everything's driven at that time. 00:09:14.240 --> 00:09:16.080 That is an act of faith. 00:09:17.659 --> 00:09:21.840 So we see then it is entirely by faith that we are able to meet the standards of God 00:09:21.840 --> 00:09:26.279 because we are all lawbreakers, both Jew and Gentile, Romans 3.23. 00:09:27.500 --> 00:09:29.440 So we show this faith by our works, 00:09:29.580 --> 00:09:32.620 as James and Paul most clearly articulate throughout their epistles. 00:09:32.620 --> 00:09:37.580 It is by faith that saints of both Old Testament and New Testament, 00:09:37.679 --> 00:09:40.419 Old Covenant, New Covenant, are saved. 00:09:40.500 --> 00:09:43.080 For even Abraham himself, the father of our faith, 00:09:43.220 --> 00:09:46.379 as you've heard the expression, was saved by just that, faith. 00:09:47.799 --> 00:09:49.899 So in short, we as a people of God, 00:09:50.440 --> 00:09:51.639 in light of these first two verses, 00:09:52.299 --> 00:09:56.100 we are called to be holy for he is holy, Leviticus 11.44. 00:09:56.100 --> 00:09:59.600 And this only happens by faith. 00:10:01.860 --> 00:10:03.659 So moving on to our next section, 00:10:04.399 --> 00:10:06.879 verses 3 through 5, 00:10:07.460 --> 00:10:10.080 and I've entitled this a reminder of the promise to Abraham. 00:10:10.460 --> 00:10:12.100 So we're talking about the Mosaic Covenant, 00:10:12.220 --> 00:10:14.440 and we're about to move into the Abrahamic Covenant. 00:10:15.540 --> 00:10:16.879 But picking up in verse 3, 00:10:16.879 --> 00:10:18.679 God says, 00:10:46.879 --> 00:10:50.700 So again, this is hearkening back to the Abrahamic Covenant. 00:10:51.720 --> 00:10:54.960 God promised Abraham that he would father many nations, 00:10:55.419 --> 00:11:00.059 and that all of those nations would be blessed by him and his descendants. 00:11:00.460 --> 00:11:01.600 Genesis 22.18. 00:11:02.679 --> 00:11:05.580 In his offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed. 00:11:06.740 --> 00:11:09.179 So again, looking back at Isaiah 56, 00:11:10.259 --> 00:11:14.159 we can see that the foreigner, right, the nations, right, 00:11:14.159 --> 00:11:15.440 the foreigner here, 00:11:15.440 --> 00:11:19.000 he is being brought near. 00:11:19.120 --> 00:11:22.380 He has as much reason to hope in God as the Israelites, 00:11:22.520 --> 00:11:24.480 as the physical seed of Abraham does. 00:11:24.560 --> 00:11:26.440 So they too, as the seed of faith, 00:11:27.160 --> 00:11:28.740 they have as much reason to hope in God, 00:11:29.000 --> 00:11:32.200 so long as they come to God on God's own terms, 00:11:32.860 --> 00:11:34.100 namely through his covenant. 00:11:35.640 --> 00:11:38.800 But did foreigners ever actually become part of the people of God in the Old Testament? 00:11:39.100 --> 00:11:40.860 Did God save them during that time, right? 00:11:40.900 --> 00:11:43.020 This is that question I mentioned earlier. 00:11:43.440 --> 00:11:45.000 And the answer is, well, yes. 00:11:45.440 --> 00:11:49.580 There's actually a significant amount, but I'll note just four briefly. 00:11:51.180 --> 00:11:53.580 Mosea's wife, if you've been doing the Bible reading plan, 00:11:53.680 --> 00:11:55.120 you probably caught this this week, 00:11:55.580 --> 00:12:00.160 but Zipporah was a Midianite who joined the covenant by circumcising her son. 00:12:01.200 --> 00:12:03.120 Exodus 4.25-26. 00:12:03.120 --> 00:12:07.320 So here you have a foreigner being blessed by Moses by way of covenant, 00:12:07.460 --> 00:12:09.360 being brought in, being grafted in. 00:12:11.200 --> 00:12:13.879 Two, many Gentiles, likely to be mostly Egyptian, 00:12:14.659 --> 00:12:16.779 joined the Israelites on their exodus. 00:12:17.480 --> 00:12:18.659 Exodus 12.3 says, 00:12:18.659 --> 00:12:24.120 And granted, many of them rebelled later on, 00:12:24.199 --> 00:12:26.419 but it's not a total rebellion by all of them. 00:12:26.519 --> 00:12:28.939 It's never really clear on that, but I think we can infer 00:12:28.939 --> 00:12:30.919 many of them probably remained faithful 00:12:30.919 --> 00:12:33.259 and partook of the covenant as Zipporah did. 00:12:34.639 --> 00:12:36.699 Another individual is Ruth. 00:12:37.259 --> 00:12:40.219 She was a Moabite who joined in the covenant with God 00:12:40.219 --> 00:12:41.959 and was part of Christ's lineage. 00:12:42.299 --> 00:12:44.679 Ruth 1.4, Matthew 1.5-6. 00:12:44.679 --> 00:12:48.419 And finally, and probably most notably, most famously 00:12:48.419 --> 00:12:49.559 in the entire Old Testament, 00:12:50.059 --> 00:12:51.599 is the city of Nineveh. 00:12:52.519 --> 00:12:53.839 Repented and turned to God, 00:12:53.959 --> 00:12:55.799 and their salvation in a broad sense 00:12:55.799 --> 00:12:58.919 was confirmed by Christ himself, Matthew 12.41. 00:13:00.699 --> 00:13:03.539 A great New Testament picture of these eunuchs and foreigners 00:13:03.539 --> 00:13:06.179 who entered the covenant that God is speaking of 00:13:06.179 --> 00:13:08.579 is found in Acts 8 with the Ethiopian eunuch. 00:13:09.699 --> 00:13:12.120 The Ethiopian eunuch, who is both a foreigner 00:13:12.120 --> 00:13:13.719 and obviously a eunuch, 00:13:13.720 --> 00:13:16.519 was reading Isaiah 53, 7-8, 00:13:16.580 --> 00:13:17.860 when Philip encountered him. 00:13:19.060 --> 00:13:20.360 Of course, we all know the story. 00:13:20.560 --> 00:13:23.700 Philip uses that text to preach to him about Christ, 00:13:23.860 --> 00:13:24.940 forgiveness of sins, 00:13:25.820 --> 00:13:28.420 and being made new and aright with God 00:13:28.420 --> 00:13:30.200 by way of Christ, by way of the cross, 00:13:30.320 --> 00:13:31.040 death, resurrection. 00:13:32.200 --> 00:13:35.120 And that results in the Ethiopian repenting of his sin, 00:13:35.279 --> 00:13:37.379 and Philip baptizes him in the name of the Father, 00:13:37.480 --> 00:13:38.480 the Son, and the Holy Spirit. 00:13:38.480 --> 00:13:42.920 This is just one of many fulfillments of Isaiah's prophecy 00:13:42.920 --> 00:13:44.480 of the eunuchs and foreigners 00:13:44.480 --> 00:13:46.320 who become God's people. 00:13:47.460 --> 00:13:49.279 The Ethiopian eunuch came to God 00:13:49.279 --> 00:13:50.620 by way of God's new covenant, 00:13:50.840 --> 00:13:53.100 which includes the external sign of baptism. 00:13:54.060 --> 00:13:55.759 So though there's some discontinuity 00:13:55.759 --> 00:13:57.300 in the exact external signs, 00:13:57.379 --> 00:13:59.440 there's much continuity in terms of 00:13:59.440 --> 00:14:00.980 the meaning behind it, 00:14:01.019 --> 00:14:01.840 the faith behind it. 00:14:01.879 --> 00:14:02.920 It's all by faith. 00:14:02.919 --> 00:14:05.599 And it's interesting, too, 00:14:05.659 --> 00:14:07.379 because Deuteronomy 23, 1 00:14:07.379 --> 00:14:09.240 forbids any eunuchs 00:14:09.240 --> 00:14:10.899 from coming into the presence of Israel 00:14:10.899 --> 00:14:12.899 and the Lord for worship. 00:14:14.059 --> 00:14:16.439 But here, Isaiah speaks of an elimination 00:14:16.439 --> 00:14:17.779 of that restriction. 00:14:18.219 --> 00:14:19.339 It no longer bears. 00:14:19.459 --> 00:14:22.199 It's not the same, right? 00:14:22.279 --> 00:14:24.079 Now the eunuch is called to serve God 00:14:24.079 --> 00:14:25.399 and be in right standing with him, 00:14:25.439 --> 00:14:26.319 as is the foreigner. 00:14:27.500 --> 00:14:29.259 So the eunuch should not be discouraged 00:14:29.259 --> 00:14:30.879 that he is a dry tree, 00:14:31.079 --> 00:14:32.179 as our text writes, 00:14:32.179 --> 00:14:33.939 which is meaning unable to reproduce, 00:14:35.059 --> 00:14:36.919 because God has made provision 00:14:36.919 --> 00:14:38.579 for the eunuch to keep the Sabbath 00:14:38.579 --> 00:14:40.959 and enter a covenant relationship with him. 00:14:43.519 --> 00:14:45.199 The reminder of the Abrahamic covenant 00:14:45.199 --> 00:14:46.979 means a lot of things, 00:14:47.079 --> 00:14:48.019 but we cannot overlook 00:14:48.019 --> 00:14:49.639 the missional aspect of it 00:14:49.639 --> 00:14:53.120 as it is so, I think, critical to this text, 00:14:53.199 --> 00:14:55.339 I think is central to this text in many ways. 00:14:56.339 --> 00:14:59.219 Again, Genesis 22, 18 shows us that 00:14:59.219 --> 00:15:00.939 God's plan for Abraham, 00:15:00.940 --> 00:15:02.380 and by extension Israel, 00:15:03.040 --> 00:15:04.840 has always been to bless the nations, 00:15:04.980 --> 00:15:06.280 the foreigners, the eunuchs. 00:15:06.920 --> 00:15:08.880 This means God has always intended to save 00:15:08.880 --> 00:15:10.400 both Jews and Gentiles, 00:15:10.500 --> 00:15:12.320 as it's been part of his predetermined plan. 00:15:13.620 --> 00:15:16.760 God is about the work of drawing a people for himself 00:15:16.760 --> 00:15:19.240 from every tribe, tongue, and nation, 00:15:19.380 --> 00:15:20.540 Revelation 7, 9. 00:15:20.539 --> 00:15:22.980 And Paul, the apostle, 00:15:23.199 --> 00:15:25.259 confirms the good news of the Abrahamic covenant, 00:15:25.259 --> 00:15:26.699 the gospel of it, 00:15:27.139 --> 00:15:27.959 when he writes, 00:15:28.579 --> 00:15:29.179 in the scripture, 00:15:29.439 --> 00:15:32.519 foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, 00:15:33.240 --> 00:15:36.099 preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, 00:15:36.879 --> 00:15:37.240 saying, 00:15:37.839 --> 00:15:40.240 In you shall all the nations be blessed. 00:15:40.919 --> 00:15:43.259 So then, those who are of faith 00:15:43.259 --> 00:15:45.339 are blessed along with
