one person in this message today. 00:02:13.120 --> 00:02:16.560 So let's go ahead and dive in. 00:02:16.640 --> 00:02:21.080 Today we're going to look at two categories that Paul lists in this passage. 00:02:22.120 --> 00:02:24.240 Adversaries and allies. 00:02:24.240 --> 00:02:27.700 And see, Paul lists two adversaries. 00:02:27.800 --> 00:02:32.700 These are people that were opposed to the gospel being spread in this passage. 00:02:32.699 --> 00:02:38.859 We will call them Demas the deserter and Alexander the antagonist. 00:02:40.259 --> 00:02:42.299 See, and Demas, we'll start with him. 00:02:42.419 --> 00:02:46.139 He is called the deserter because, well, he deserts Paul. 00:02:46.139 --> 00:02:51.239 And I think it's important for us to look at this and understand this. 00:02:51.500 --> 00:02:54.439 He is not just called the deserter because he leaves. 00:02:54.899 --> 00:02:59.979 There are many people that we will look at later in the sermon today that leave. 00:02:59.979 --> 00:03:06.340 But see, Demas is a deserter because if you look at verse 10 of what it says there. 00:03:07.639 --> 00:03:11.179 See, it says that Demas loved this world. 00:03:12.819 --> 00:03:14.659 Demas was no ordinary Roman. 00:03:14.959 --> 00:03:18.219 This was not a guy that Paul had just met on the street and become friends with. 00:03:18.359 --> 00:03:21.899 No, Demas was important to Paul. 00:03:21.900 --> 00:03:30.360 In Philemon 24, Paul says that Demas is a gospel worker with him. 00:03:31.379 --> 00:03:35.840 Twice in the New Testament, Demas is listed in the same breath as Luke, 00:03:36.259 --> 00:03:40.099 the gospel writer of Luke, and the book of Acts. 00:03:41.879 --> 00:03:46.020 See, through many trials, Demas has been with Paul. 00:03:47.000 --> 00:03:49.659 He has experienced the highs of ministry. 00:03:49.659 --> 00:03:51.199 He has fought through lows. 00:03:52.060 --> 00:03:55.219 But in the end, when Paul is desperate, 00:03:55.579 --> 00:03:57.960 when he needs somebody to be by his side, 00:03:59.240 --> 00:04:00.139 Demas deserted him. 00:04:02.079 --> 00:04:05.419 And I wonder if there is anyone in the room today that can relate to this. 00:04:06.379 --> 00:04:08.919 See, on the outside, you look like a Christian. 00:04:10.240 --> 00:04:13.079 You would be able to pass the test if there was one. 00:04:13.139 --> 00:04:14.099 You go to church. 00:04:14.719 --> 00:04:16.139 You do the golden rule. 00:04:16.259 --> 00:04:18.159 Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. 00:04:18.159 --> 00:04:19.319 You will like then when you least expect it, when you need me the most, I'm going to stab you right in the back. 00:07:25.779 --> 00:07:28.500 I don't think that's what Demas wanted to do. 00:07:29.379 --> to him. 00:08:08.300 --> 00:08:09.139 And he ran. 00:08:09.139 --> 00:08:15.959 So the question, friends, in the room today, what are we soaking up? 00:08:17.719 --> 00:08:21.800 Are we going to be defined by the world's definition of success, 00:08:21.839 --> 00:08:23.719 and what the world wants to push on us? 00:08:24.159 --> 00:08:28.099 Or are we going to be defined by what Jesus says about us? 00:08:29.680 --> 00:08:32.399 So that's the first category of adversary. 00:08:33.319 --> 00:08:35.100 Let's move now to the second category. 00:08:35.659 --> 00:08:37.980 And that's Alexander the Antagonist. 00:08:39.139 --> 00:08:44.759 See, unlike Demas, who is with Paul and he turns his back on Paul, 00:08:45.460 --> 00:08:48.259 Alexander is an open enemy of Paul's preaching. 00:08:49.019 --> 00:08:51.840 We don't know a lot about Alexander. 00:08:52.319 --> 00:08:55.659 Unfortunately, it was a really common name back 2,000 years ago. 00:08:56.639 --> 00:09:02.819 But we do know that Alexander was doing everything that he possibly could 00:09:02.820 --> 00:09:07.320 to make sure that the mission of God was not accomplished through Paul. 00:09:10.840 --> 00:09:14.520 See, so much so that Paul, even in his letter to his young protege, Timothy, 00:09:14.680 --> 00:09:15.280 has to say, 00:09:15.379 --> 00:09:17.800 Hey, Timothy, watch out for this guy. 00:09:17.879 --> 00:09:19.060 He is not good. 00:09:20.820 --> 00:09:22.080 Do not trust him. 00:09:22.160 --> 00:09:22.920 He is a snake. 00:09:23.020 --> 00:09:25.400 He wants nothing more than to see you fail. 00:09:25.399 --> 00:09:28.759 And once again, I would ask the question, 00:09:28.919 --> 00:09:30.259 Is this someone in the room today? 00:09:31.220 --> 00:09:33.639 Maybe you're here just because a 00:09:46.019 --> 00:09:49.539 Number one, welcome. 00:09:50.939 --> 00:09:51.379 Genuinely. 00:09:52.460 --> 00:09:57.279 The church for centuries has been a place where people come to find answers. 00:09:58.679 --> 00:10:02.860 West Kilburn, this church, wants to be that place in this community. 00:10:05.039 --> 00:10:06.100 So welcome in. 00:10:07.519 --> 00:10:10.480 And the second thing I want to ask is, 00:10:10.939 --> 00:10:11.519 How's it going? 00:10:12.939 --> 00:10:15.179 And not the how's it going that you say when you meet somebody, 00:10:15.179 --> 00:10:15.819 Hey, how's it going? 00:10:15.879 --> 00:10:17.519 You really don't care what their answer is. 00:10:17.959 --> 00:10:23.259 But the genuine, soul-searching question of how is it going in your life? 00:10:25.379 --> 00:10:27.459 See, the writer of this letter, Paul, 00:10:28.279 --> 00:10:29.979 he would have an answer to that question. 00:10:30.079 --> 00:10:31.019 And his answer would be, 00:10:31.839 --> 00:10:33.059 It's not going very well. 00:10:35.459 --> 00:10:39.859 See, Paul, just in the message prior to this, 00:10:39.879 --> 00:10:40.740 in the few verses prior, 00:10:41.359 --> 00:10:42.919 he said, Hey, my time is near. 00:10:43.000 --> 00:10:43.679 I've been beaten. 00:10:43.679 --> 00:10:44.779 I've been jailed. 00:10:44.779 --> 00:10:47.199 And I am about to die for the faith. 00:10:47.979 --> 00:10:49.239 He knows this. 00:10:50.139 --> 00:10:52.399 And yet, Paul's story makes even less sense 00:10:52.399 --> 00:10:57.419 when you realize that Paul went from a persecutor of the church 00:10:57.419 --> 00:10:59.159 to the position that he is in now. 00:11:01.839 --> 00:11:05.519 See, Paul is in the same shoes as Alexander is in this passage. 00:11:05.679 --> 00:11:07.919 He was in the same shoes as Alexander is in this passage. 00:11:07.919 --> 00:11:11.539 And if you are an antagonist of the gospel, 00:11:11.699 --> 00:11:14.019 he was in the same shoes as you are today. 00:11:16.339 --> 00:11:17.360 So what changed? 00:11:17.459 --> 00:11:21.379 How did a persecutor of the faith become one of the faith's greatest martyrs? 00:11:23.240 --> 00:11:24.099 Paul met Jesus. 00:11:25.379 --> 00:11:28.620 On the road to Damascus, the Lord changed Paul's life, 00:11:28.620 --> 00:11:31.279 and he could no longer live for himself 00:11:31.279 --> 00:11:33.980 because he found something greater to live for. 00:11:34.139 --> 00:11:36.179 And it changed everything. 00:11:39.039 --> 00:11:41.679 And now, when he is faced with the reality of death, 00:11:41.799 --> 00:11:44.940 Paul does not shrink back and hide, 00:11:45.019 --> 00:11:48.179 but instead he can sit there and proclaim the good news 00:11:48.179 --> 00:11:50.620 because it has changed his life, 00:11:50.620 --> 00:11:53.620 and he believes it can change yours too. 00:11:56.759 --> 00:11:59.179 See, if you look at the end of verse 14, 00:11:59.379 --> 00:12:00.679 the start of verse 14 there, 00:12:00.919 --> 00:12:04.639 see, Paul does not take retribution for Alexander into his own hands. 00:12:05.600 --> 00:12:09.500 See, he knows that God is the ruler of all things 00:12:09.500 --> 00:12:12.039 and that he has power over all things. 00:12:13.899 --> 00:12:15.299 And so, he says, 00:12:15.399 --> 00:12:17.460 Alexander, you are going to get what you deserve 00:12:17.460 --> 00:12:18.860 either in this life or the next. 00:12:18.980 --> 00:12:20.180 It does not matter to me. 00:12:20.179 --> 00:12:21.979 But there is one who is all-powerful 00:12:21.979 --> 00:12:23.179 who will take care of it all. 00:12:25.439 --> 00:12:27.139 And this begs the question, 00:12:27.319 --> 00:12:30.519 what would happen if we got what we deserved? 00:12:33.579 --> 00:12:35.979 If you want to answer that question today 00:12:35.979 --> 00:12:38.319 with the hope and assurance that Paul does, 00:12:39.159 --> 00:12:41.599 then you have to meet the same person that Paul met, 00:12:42.439 --> 00:12:43.399 and that's Jesus. 00:12:44.679 --> 00:12:47.199 So that the next time someone asks you the question, 00:12:47.379 --> 00:12:48.379 how's it going, 00:12:48.379 --> 00:12:49.419 you can say, 00:12:49.480 --> 00:12:51.120 well, it doesn't matter my circumstances. 00:12:51.120 --> 00:12:52.159 They could be really great. 00:12:52.220 --> changed me. 00:13:06.899 --> 00:13:11.079 So now we've looked at the adversaries. 00:13:11.079 --> 00:13:12.279 We've looked at the bad guys. 00:13:12.360 --> 00:13:14.220 Let's turn our attention now part of a group 00:14:09.980 --> 00:14:12.180 that I will call T, TLC. 00:14:12.179 --> 00:14:15.679 Titus, Tychicus, Luke, and Carpus. 00:14:16.679 --> 00:14:19.500 And yes, these guys did indeed go chasing waterfalls 00:14:19.500 --> 00:14:20.779 instead of sticking to the lakes 00:14:20.779 --> 00:14:22.019 and the rivers that they're used to. 00:14:25.339 --> 00:14:27.639 But see, if you look at the credentials of these guys, 00:14:27.739 --> 00:14:30.739 you realize that they are just ordinary people. 00:14:33.599 --> 00:14:35.079 These guys were not Jews. 00:14:35.500 --> 00:14:37.959 They did not grow up studying under rabbis. 00:14:38.120 --> 00:14:40.859 But instead, they were just out in the world 00:14:40.859 --> 00:14:42.059 and started following Jesus. 00:14:42.179 --> 00:14:43.259 Through different circumstances. 00:14:44.899 --> 00:14:46.620 None of them would look exceptional 00:14:46.620 --> 00:14:48.359 in the eyes of the world. 00:14:49.479 --> 00:14:51.019 But yet, if you look at their resumes 00:14:51.019 --> 00:14:53.359 after the fact, 00:14:54.459 --> 00:14:57.079 you see that they had a huge impact for the gospel. 00:14:59.099 --> 00:15:00.879 All right, so out of T, T, L, and C, 00:15:01.059 --> 00:15:02.459 Carpus, again, is one of those guys 00:15:02.459 --> 00:15:04.000 that we just don't know a lot about. 00:15:04.239 --> 00:15:05.879 He's not mentioned anywhere else in the Bible. 00:15:05.879 --> 00:15:08.699 But the other three, Titus, Tychicus, and Luke, 00:15:08.700 --> 00:15:12.600 their legacies continue to this day. 00:15:14.480 --> 00:15:15.520 So let's start with Titus. 00:15:15.620 --> 00:15:17.860 Titus wasn't Paul's protege. 00:15:17.960 --> 00:15:19.180 He did not get that title. 00:15:20.440 --> 00:15:22.320 Instead, when you look at where Paul sends him 00:15:22.320 --> 00:15:23.940 instead of where he sends Timothy, 00:15:24.379 --> 00:15:25.640 you kind of think, Titus, 00:15:25.700 --> 00:15:27.320 you kind of got the bad end of the deal here. 00:15:28.960 --> 00:15:31.480 See, Timothy gets to go to this global city of Ephesus. 00:15:31.480 --> 00:15:33.360 And while it did have some of its problems, 00:15:33.960 --> 00:15:35.860 Ephesus is known as a place 00:15:35.860 --> 00:15:37.759 where some of the titans of the faith came from. 00:15:39.460 --> 00:15:39.899 Titus. 00:15:40.460 --> 00:15:43.100 Titus was sent as a messenger to the Corinthians. 00:15:44.220 --> 00:15:46.820 And if you've ever read 1 and 2 Corinthians, 00:15:47.120 --> 00:15:49.779 you know they had some problems. 00:15:51.800 --> 00:15:52.879 On top of that, 00:15:53.460 --> 00:15:56.539 Titus goes on a missionary journey with Paul to Crete. 00:15:56.879 --> 00:15:59.440 And Paul's like, great, I'm going to continue on. 00:15:59.899 --> 00:16:01.120 Titus, you stay here in Crete. 00:16:02.800 --> 00:16:04.279 The problem is the people in Crete, 00:16:04.279 --> 00:16:08.819 they were described as liars, lazy gluttons, and evil beasts. 00:16:09.799 --> 00:16:11.339 Not a great missionary assignment, huh? 00:16:13.199 --> 00:16:15.240 And then even in 2 Timothy here, 00:16:15.399 --> 00:16:17.019 while Paul is writing this letter, 00:16:18.019 --> 00:16:19.439 Titus is in modern-day Serbia, 00:16:20.500 --> 00:16:23.600 ministering and spreading the gospel to the people there. 00:16:24.319 --> 00:16:26.559 He never had a position of grandeur. 00:16:27.419 --> 00:16:30.139 He was just an ordinary guy following the Lord 00:16:30.139 --> 00:16:32.539 and obeying Paul when he told him to go. 00:16:32.539 --> 00:16:34.500 What about Luke? 00:16:35.939 --> 00:16:37.379 Luke has kind of the same story. 00:16:37.439 --> 00:16:38.659 He's a Gentile doctor. 00:16:39.759 --> 00:16:42.519 He accompanies Paul on his second missionary journey, 00:16:42.719 --> 00:16:45.299 and Paul leaves him behind in Philippi. 00:16:46.439 --> 00:16:49.199 And then Paul continues on throughout all of his journeys, 00:16:49.299 --> 00:16:51.740 doing all the great things that are written about in the gospel of Luke. 00:16:52.000 --> 00:16:52.919 You know where Luke is? 00:16:54.399 --> 00:16:54.839 Philippi. 00:16:55.839 --> 00:16:57.480 Paul doesn't come back and pick him up 00:16:57.480 --> 00:16:59.079 until his third missionary journey. 00:16:59.480 --> 00:17:00.279 Luke is just there. 00:17:00.279 --> 00:17:04.259 And then, you know what we hear about Luke after that? 00:17:05.180 --> 00:17:05.980 Not a lot. 00:17:06.940 --> 00:17:08.839 He just accompanies Paul. 00:17:10.240 --> 00:17:13.099 Luke is a trained doctor turned sojourner, 00:17:13.339 --> 00:17:17.720 and now, by all accounts in the world, 00:17:17.859 --> 00:17:20.119 he would look kind of like a failure, right? 00:17:21.619 --> 00:17:23.019 And then that comes to Tychicus. 00:17:23.440 --> 00:17:25.279 Tychicus is basically Paul's royal male. 00:17:25.279 --> 00:17:28.139 He takes a gift from the Corinthian church, 00:17:28.240 --> 00:17:29.700 takes it over to the Jerusalem church. 00:17:29.960 --> 00:17:32.740 He delivered various letters to various different churches. 00:17:33.379 --> 00:17:37.019 He helped unite a former slave to his former master. 00:17:37.879 --> 00:17:43.460 And then Tychicus is the one who gives Titus a break on Crete. 00:17:43.460 --> 00:17:51.079 And again, I ask the same question over again on purpose. 00:17:51.860 --> 00:17:54.940 I wonder, as we look here at this passage, 00:17:55.059 --> 00:17:57.720 as any one of us in the room can relate. 00:18:01.400 --> 00:18:03.920 See, we would just be going through life 00:18:03.920 --> 00:18:06.140 and feel very ordinary. 00:18:07.680 --> 00:18:09.360 Maybe it's a middling career. 00:18:10.000 --> 00:18:12.519 Life not quite going how we expected it when we were 25. 00:18:12.519 --> 00:18:17.799 Maybe, in all the accounts of the world, 00:18:17.980 --> 00:18:19.839 we would be considered a failure.
