Especially in relation to the Galilee and ministry of Christ, Galilee is a small region. 00:00:17.620 --> 00:00:29.200 It's only about 50 miles north to south and about 30 miles east to west, but it is an impactful area in the Gospels. 00:00:29.940 --> 00:00:35.700 There's probably about 200 small towns and villages scattered throughout that area, 00:00:35.700 --> 00:00:42.480 but the surrounding areas, those are tight and densely populated, 00:00:42.479 --> 00:00:46.559 but the surrounding areas are farms and pastures. 00:00:47.559 --> 00:00:53.339 At the time of Mark chapter 6, Jesus had been ministering there about a year, 00:00:54.079 --> 00:00:57.179 and He would not be there much longer. 00:00:57.299 --> 00:01:01.280 He would soon move on to Tyre and Sidon, 00:01:01.379 --> 00:01:07.099 and Sidon and Tyre are on the Mediterranean coast up north of Galilee, 00:01:07.099 --> 00:01:13.119 unmarked on this map, possibly even beyond the map a little bit, 00:01:13.459 --> 00:01:15.280 north on the Mediterranean. 00:01:15.419 --> 00:01:17.339 It was the land of the Gentiles. 00:01:18.299 --> 00:01:22.919 And after spending some time there, He would come back through Galilee, 00:01:23.799 --> 00:01:27.199 enter into the Decapolis area region, 00:01:27.200 --> 00:01:32.500 and then in chapter 10 of Mark, He heads toward Judea, 00:01:33.020 --> 00:01:37.920 before His decisive move toward the cross in Jerusalem. 00:01:38.460 --> 00:01:41.939 So that's the setting of Mark chapter 6. 00:01:42.020 --> 00:01:50.600 Now, there's three reasons why I believe this is possibly the most amazing chapter in all the Gospels. 00:01:50.599 --> 00:01:55.359 One of them is Jesus was ineffective in His own town. 00:01:56.799 --> 00:02:04.640 That amazes me that some were changed, but few were changed because they did not believe. 00:02:06.079 --> 00:02:07.199 That's pretty amazing to me. 00:02:07.780 --> 00:02:14.019 The second thing that amazes me about this chapter is the great movement that took place 00:02:14.019 --> 00:02:18.159 when He sent out the 12 apostles two by two. 00:02:18.159 --> 00:02:22.299 powerful things happened throughout the Galilean region. 00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:27.159 He sent His apostles to preach and to minister, and that's what they did. 00:02:27.439 --> 00:02:30.300 He gave them authority to do it, 00:02:30.699 --> 00:02:34.020 and with that authority, they preached repentance. 00:02:35.159 --> 00:02:36.780 They preached the kingdom. 00:02:38.000 --> 00:02:39.500 They healed the sick. 00:02:39.680 --> 00:02:40.879 They cast out demons. 00:02:41.079 --> 00:02:43.759 They had a major impact in that area. 00:02:43.759 --> 00:02:46.500 And by the way, 11 of them were from that area, 00:02:46.500 --> 00:02:57.500 which again is pretty amazing to me that those 11 apostles had a powerful, effective ministry in the area in which they were raised, 00:02:57.620 --> 00:03:03.039 but yet Jesus was ineffective in the very town that He was raised in. 00:03:03.039 --> 00:03:09.579 But that passage tells us that it was an exhaustive measure. 00:03:09.780 --> 00:03:10.939 The Gospels tell us that. 00:03:11.439 --> 00:03:15.979 Not only that, not only was their ministry effort exhausted, but it was exhausting 00:03:15.979 --> 00:03:20.419 to the point that Jesus knew they needed time away. 00:03:21.120 --> 00:03:25.159 But our passage today tells us they didn't get the rest they needed. 00:03:26.759 --> 00:03:27.840 Not that night. 00:03:27.840 --> 00:03:36.219 And the third reason why this chapter is amazing to me is the miracle that takes place. 00:03:37.740 --> 00:03:42.560 Now, if you've been to Sunday school, what we used to call it, 00:03:43.060 --> 00:03:46.099 and you've been to church long enough, 00:03:46.180 --> 00:03:50.000 you probably know the story of the feeding of the 5,000. 00:03:50.000 --> 00:04:01.000 And my prayer has been that familiarity would not take away from you learning possibly new truth from this story. 00:04:01.259 --> 00:04:03.659 Don't get to the end before we get there, please, 00:04:03.740 --> 00:04:10.439 because I'm firmly convinced that God has some things to show us today in a pretty familiar story. 00:04:10.780 --> 00:04:16.839 But I'm telling you, I hope that that familiarity don't steal the truth of it because it is amazing. 00:04:16.839 --> 00:04:22.039 Listen, there are only two miracles in the Gospels that are mentioned in all four Gospels. 00:04:22.739 --> 00:04:24.199 One of them is this miracle. 00:04:24.639 --> 00:04:26.500 The other is the resurrection of Christ. 00:04:27.639 --> 00:04:29.379 So this stands out. 00:04:29.479 --> 00:04:30.599 This is a big one. 00:04:31.519 --> 00:04:38.620 And it was so impactful that after this, they tried to force Jesus to become king. 00:04:39.500 --> 00:04:41.879 They wanted him to take over. 00:04:41.879 --> 00:04:45.939 Not only can he provide for us, not only is he the master teacher, 00:04:46.339 --> 00:04:49.839 not only does he relate to where we are, let's take on Rome. 00:04:50.600 --> 00:04:51.519 He's our king. 00:04:52.139 --> 00:04:53.379 Let's force him to be king. 00:04:54.579 --> 00:04:58.959 That's the setting for Mark 6, beginning in verse 30. 00:04:59.060 --> 00:04:59.659 And it says this, 00:05:00.199 --> 00:05:05.800 The apostles returned to Jesus and told them all that Christ. 00:08:28.379 --> 00:08:31.500 One is, he cares deeply. 00:08:31.500 --> 00:08:39.480 Jesus knew firsthand the need of rest in ministry. 00:08:40.799 --> 00:08:44.879 Being all things to all people in the hope of reaching some, 00:08:44.980 --> 00:08:46.419 as the apostle Paul put it, 00:08:47.460 --> 00:08:48.720 can wear you out. 00:08:50.220 --> 00:08:51.720 And Jesus was well aware of that. 00:08:53.279 --> 00:08:56.259 He cares for our well-being. 00:08:56.259 --> 00:09:00.600 He cared about the apostles' well-being. 00:09:01.919 --> 00:09:07.480 And he strived to get them away from the action after intense and productive ministry 00:09:07.480 --> 00:09:10.360 and get them the needed rest. 00:09:12.439 --> 00:09:14.840 He cares deeply. 00:09:16.620 --> 00:09:17.259 What were
