that a more comfortable place should ought to be provided as the first refuge for those who are safe from the sea. 00:03:01.319 --> 00:03:07.379 And so they replaced the emergency stretchers with some beds and put some furniture in the enlarged building. 00:03:07.379 --> 00:03:14.180 And now the life-saving station became a comfortable and popular gathering place for the members. 00:03:14.180 --> 00:03:17.219 And they kind of furnished it like a club. 00:03:17.219 --> 00:03:25.159 Less of the members, however, were now interested in going out to sea on life-saving missions. 00:03:25.159 --> 00:03:29.719 And so they hired lifeboat crews to do the work for them. 00:03:30.719 --> 00:03:36.599 Most were too busy or lacked the necessary commitment to take part in the life-saving activities their primary purpose and pointed out that they still were called a life-saving station. 00:03:53.819 --> 00:04:03.299 But they were voted down and told that if they wanted to save the life of all evolved into a club and yet another life-saving station was founded. 00:04:23.819 --> 00:04:30.319 And so if you visit the seacoast today, you'll find a number of exclusive clubs along the shore. 00:04:31.040 --> 00:04:37.439 Shipwrecks are frequent in the waters, but most people drown. 00:04:39.219 --> 00:04:46.339 It's a great parable, I think, as we come to Mission Pledge Sunday today. 00:04:46.899 --> 00:04:51.139 It's also a great parable about ancient Israel. 00:04:51.139 --> 00:05:02.479 You see, the temple, the center of their worship, was meant to be the center of their activity in God's bringing blessing to the world. 00:05:04.699 --> 00:05:06.360 Israel was God's people. 00:05:06.860 --> 00:05:07.919 Jerusalem was his city. 00:05:08.019 --> 00:05:09.579 In the middle of the city was the temple. 00:05:09.839 --> 00:05:14.180 And from there, the presence of God would go out and bring blessing to the nations. 00:05:14.180 --> 00:05:25.560 And so it's been a tense couple of days for Jesus and his mates as they have come into Jerusalem, Matthew 21 through to 23. 00:05:25.560 --> 00:05:28.839 It's a fairly tense time. 00:05:28.839 --> 00:05:38.740 During these days, after the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, Jesus prophesied destruction on Israel by cursing the fig tree. 00:05:39.100 --> 00:05:46.120 He has cleansed out the temple by a weapon changing over tables, turning over money-changing tables. 00:05:46.120 --> 00:05:52.560 And he has entered into debates with the religious establishment, which is what we looked at a few weeks ago. 00:05:53.620 --> 00:05:55.600 Debates which he consistently won. 00:05:56.399 --> 00:06:06.019 And in chapter 23 of Matthew, Jesus passes judgment on the religious leadership of Israel. 00:06:06.519 --> 00:06:11.579 Curse after curse after curse upon them and does away with them. 00:06:11.579 --> 00:06:22.219 And see, for the disciples of Jesus, they've sort of heard Jesus engage in all this conflict in the temple courts. 00:06:22.500 --> 00:06:24.500 They all think it's a little bit tough. 00:06:25.159 --> 00:06:30.979 You see, for the disciples of Jesus up to this point, his mission isn't clear to them. 00:06:32.399 --> 00:06:36.699 They really have potentially not understood the first thing of it yet. 00:06:36.699 --> 00:06:42.360 You see, for them, the temple was still very important. 00:06:44.860 --> 00:06:50.699 You see, when the disciples look at the temple, they see coming glory. 00:06:51.860 --> 00:06:54.539 Have a look at it there in chapter 24, verse 2. 00:06:56.539 --> 00:06:59.459 Jesus left the temple and was walking away. 00:06:59.579 --> 00:07:00.699 This is his final... 00:07:01.639 --> 00:07:03.199 He's rejected the temple. 00:07:03.300 --> 00:07:04.959 He's rejected the old Israel system. 00:07:04.959 --> 00:07:07.199 He's walking away from it now for the final time. 00:07:07.519 --> 00:07:08.979 And as he's walking away, it says, 00:07:09.259 --> 00:07:13.459 His disciples came up to him to call his attention to the buildings. 00:07:15.060 --> 00:07:20.439 The equivalent passage in Mark 13 has the disciples saying to Jesus, 00:07:20.839 --> 00:07:25.699 Look, teacher, what magnificent stones, what magnificent buildings. 00:07:27.939 --> 00:07:30.419 Luke 21 says a very similar thing. 00:07:30.420 --> 00:07:35.180 The disciples are saying, basically here at this moment, 00:07:35.300 --> 00:07:36.240 Oh, come on, Jesus. 00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:38.140 Lighten up a little bit. 00:07:39.759 --> 00:07:40.900 Have a look at it. 00:07:41.860 --> 00:07:43.460 It's not that bad. 00:07:44.840 --> 00:07:46.439 It's a pretty spectacular building. 00:07:47.580 --> 00:07:48.900 And in actual fact, it was. 00:07:48.980 --> 00:07:50.259 The temple was magnificent. 00:07:50.259 --> 00:07:57.899 It was built on a half an acre of marble slab with an imposing dominance over ancient Israel. 00:07:58.219 --> 00:08:04.439 It was considered one of the great wonders of the Roman world until the Romans themselves smashed it. 00:08:05.240 --> 00:08:10.519 But unlike the disciples, when Jesus saw the temple, he didn't see coming glory. 00:08:10.939 --> 00:08:12.180 He saw judgment. 00:08:12.180 --> 00:08:20.120 And so Jesus says something really unexpected to the disciples. 00:08:20.340 --> 00:08:23.959 In fact, something that would have potentially chilled their blood. 00:08:25.000 --> 00:08:25.540 Verse 2. 00:08:26.819 --> 00:08:29.000 Do you see all these things? 00:08:30.920 --> 00:08:32.419 I tell you stunned silence at that point as they wander out the gate, if it had one, out the gate and down the pathway, down the slope, up the other side of the slope and camp themselves on the Mount of Olives. 00:08:57.399 --> 00:09:00.480 You see, from there, they were 50 meters higher than Jerusalem. 00:09:00.480 --> 00:09:08.159 And they have a dramatic view of the temple with the massive stones and the marble and the ivory and the gold. 00:09:09.800 --> 00:09:12.019 And then the question comes, verse 3. 00:09:12.159 --> 00:09:16.360 Tell us, they said, when will this happen? 00:09:17.080 --> 00:09:21.080 And what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age? 00:09:25.259 --> 00:09:26.800 Let me just give you a heads up here. 00:09:26.799 --> 00:09:41.359 From the rest of Matthew 24, the rest of these verses, Jesus' reply to that question is by far the most difficult passage in Matthew. 00:09:41.360 --> 00:09:57.320 And along with its parallels in Mark 13 and Luke 21, most commentators agree that they are the most difficult texts of the New Testament to understand. 00:09:58.360 --> 00:10:03.700 So I'm not pretending here in any sense that we're going to nail it tonight. 00:10:04.539 --> 00:10:07.460 What we're going to do is we're going to take a bit of a big picture look. 00:10:07.460 --> 00:10:15.940 So what is particularly difficult is the rich nature of the language and the intertwining of multiple ideas. 00:10:17.280 --> 00:10:24.300 You see, in this Jesus' answer, he is looking to the future, answering the question, when's it going to happen? 00:10:25.019 --> 00:10:27.120 But to what future is he looking? 00:10:27.519 --> 00:10:33.160 The verses could refer to the destruction of the temple and the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. 00:10:33.159 --> 00:10:35.439 They could refer to the end of history. 00:10:35.740 --> 00:10:37.559 They could refer to the second coming of Jesus. 00:10:37.679 --> 00:10:40.120 They could refer to the death and resurrection of Jesus. 00:10:41.519 --> 00:10:43.159 What is Jesus looking to? 00:10:45.419 --> 00:10:46.839 My answer is this. 00:10:48.279 --> 00:10:49.939 I think it's referring to often one section will have multiple fulfillments. 00:11:09.139 --> 00:11:11.600 But the context for us is verses 1 to 3. 00:11:11.960 --> 00:11:16.500 The disciples were concerned about the physical temple as they saw it. 00:11:17.320 --> 00:11:24.700 And they pointed out the buildings to Jesus, most likely for them, hoping that Jesus will cut the leadership some slack. 00:11:24.700 --> 00:11:26.360 And say, hey, it's a good building. 00:11:28.460 --> 00:11:30.320 But he says it's going to be destroyed. 00:11:31.300 --> 00:11:34.860 And so the disciples side up beside Jesus on the Mount of Olives. 00:11:35.080 --> 00:11:40.680 And they want the inside goss on when the physical building of the temple is going to be destroyed. 00:11:40.920 --> 00:11:41.600 When's it going to --> 00:12:10.799 After a four-year siege where the Romans came in to squash a rebellion, which had happened. 00:12:10.799 --> 00:12:17.419 And it was a terrible siege that involved unimaginable hardships. 00:12:18.120 --> 00:12:23.519 The Romans made a sustained attempt to starve out the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 00:12:25.500 --> 00:12:28.979 Parents were reduced to cannibalism as they ate their own children. 00:12:29.979 --> 00:12:33.099 The city and the temple were eventually reduced to rubble. 00:12:33.579 --> 00:12:37.799 So much so that not one stone lay on top of another stone. 00:12:37.799 --> 00:12:42.799 The carnage and the slaughter were terrible. 00:12:43.719 --> 00:12:46.719 More than one million Jews died in the operation. 00:12:47.240 --> 00:12:50.959 And that is why catastrophe. 00:13:10.600 --> 00:13:15.620 But why were the disciples keen to know when it was all going to take place? 00:13:17.320 --> 00:13:19.659 Did they actually care about the building? Ezekiel. 00:13:40.379 --> 00:13:43.839 The destruction of the temple was linked to God departing. 00:13:43.840 --> 00:13:50.680 Remember, God's presence was left the temple and the temple was nothing more than a bunch of stones. 00:13:51.200 --> 00:13:53.940 And the temple was going to be smashed as a result. 00:13:54.019 --> 00:13:54.800 And it did happen. 00:13:56.700 --> 00:14:02.660 And what also happened was that when God's presence departed, the temple was smashed. 00:14:02.980 --> 00:14:04.680 The people were exiled. 00:14:05.940 --> 00:14:07.860 It meant judgment for them. 00:14:07.860 --> 00:14:16.379 And so when Jesus says here that the temple is going to be destroyed, they go, oh no, not again. 00:14:18.399 --> 00:14:21.379 Not another trip to Babylon. 00:14:23.259 into instructing the church about his kingdom, his return, and what his people are meant to do in the between times. 00:14:47.620 --> 00:14:54.220 The bottom line is the destruction of the temple in wars, and persecution, all those sort of things that you experienced in the previous exiles, it will not be a signal that the kingdom of God has ended. 00:15:09.400 --> 00:15:12.880 It will not be a signal that Jesus is not on the throne. 00:15:13.640 --> 00:15:19.460 On the surface, it will look like there is no hope and there is no future, but Jesus is the king. 00:15:19.740 --> 00:15:20.760 He closer those catastrophes come to home. 00:18:17.039 --> 00:18:30.819 You see, I think the siege of Jerusalem would have caused the people of Christ to question everything because of the nature of temple was actually going to happen within days. 00:19:14.059 --> 00:19:16.500 The actual building would stand until 70 AD. 00:19:17.419 --> 00:19:20.720 But the end would be determined within a until the end of all time. 00:29:11.000 --> 00:29:14.339 Verse 14 again, 00:29:14.440 --> 00:29:22.279 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations and then the end will come. 00:29:24.339 --> 00:29:32.539 So, let me just stand back and tell you what I think this passage is saying for us. 00:29:32.539 --> 00:29:37.639 The basic teaching here is quite pastoral of Jesus, I think. 00:29:38.339 --> 00:29:42.519 And the basic teaching is keep watch. 00:29:45.079 --> 00:29:46.539 Remember the question of the disciples? 00:29:47.539 --> in other words, be vigilant. 00:29:58.359 --> 00:29:58.939 Look hard. 00:29:59.500 --> 00:30:04.500 But, not vigilant keeping watch for signs of the return of Jesus. 00:30:07.700 --> 00:30:10.200 Because Jesus says, as you go through Matthew 24, 00:30:12.159 --> 00:30:15.819 that there will be a number of things which will happen, 00:30:16.159 --> 00:30:18.179 but don't trust any of the signs. missionary endeavors were fulfilled. 00:32:44.619 --> 00:32:46.399 That is, on one level, you could say 00:32:46.399 --> 00:32:51.000 the apostle Paul filled verse 14 by 70 AD. 00:32:51.000 --> 00:32:54.019 That is, he took the nation, 00:32:54.339 --> 00:32:56.519 the gospel as far as Rome. 00:32:57.839 --> 00:33:00.279 The gospel did go out to the nations. 00:33:05.720 --> 00:33:07.279 But how do I know it's not fulfilled? 00:33:08.059 --> 00:33:08.539 Completely? 00:33:09.619 --> 00:33:10.980 Because the end hasn't come. 00:33:12.579 --> 00:33:14.400 And because the end hasn't come,
