I want to start off with a question. Does anybody in here like to bake? Anybody like to bake? Okay. Several of you like to bake. I like to do some baking. I mean, you have a recipe that you want to follow. our study of the Psalms by looking at Psalm 1. 00:05:18.500 --> 00:05:28.139 Now Psalm 1, we were able to see that is a deeply personal Psalm that reminds us of the importance of focusing on what heart, sets his mind on God. 00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:40.459 That delights in the law of the Lord. 00:05:40.459 --> 00:05:47.299 Psalm 2 this week, as we're about to see, is linked so closely with Psalm 1. 00:05:47.959 --> 00:05:51.239 That sometimes they're even referred to as twin Psalms. 00:05:51.739 --> 00:05:58.899 Psalm 1 begins with blessed is the man and Psalm 2 ends with blessed are all those who take refuge in him. 00:05:59.339 --> 00:06:03.259 Psalm 1 begins with blessing, Psalm 2 ends with blessing. 00:06:03.259 --> 00:06:10.680 Michael Wilcox notes, he says, the private world of like, no, you've seen how fast I go through a passage. 00:06:32.660 --> 00:06:33.920 We're going to split them up. 00:06:34.139 --> 00:06:38.040 But these two are deeply connected to one another. 00:06:38.139 --> 00:06:41.900 They're deeply intentional of being put side by side. 00:06:42.019 --> 00:06:47.280 In fact, the connection is so strong that I love how James Hamilton, he notes this. 00:06:47.279 --> 00:06:56.719 He says, Psalm 1 is strategically linked with Psalm 2 and together these two Psalms introduce the whole Psalter. 00:06:57.379 --> 00:07:07.219 Last week we talked about how Psalm 1 is really an exposition of what is together or the remaining Psalms are an exposition of Psalm 1 and how it's the perfect introduction. 00:07:07.219 --> 00:07:17.179 But really when you look at these two together, both of these Psalms introduce the remaining Psalms that we find in this great book. 00:07:17.279 --> 00:07:24.219 As you look throughout the Psalms, there are many Psalms, as you will see, that are clearly messianic in their structure. 00:07:24.799 --> 00:07:27.099 Meaning they clearly point us to Jesus. 00:07:27.579 --> 00:07:30.119 They clearly point us to the coming Messiah. 00:07:30.119 --> 00:07:35.239 And in fact, if you think about it, all of these Psalms, all the Psalms do this to an extent. 00:07:35.639 --> 00:07:40.559 But there's some Psalms that we get to that are very specific with this. 00:07:40.959 --> 00:07:46.799 There's some Psalms that we find ourselves looking at and our minds immediately go to Jesus. 00:07:47.279 --> 00:07:51.059 This is one of those Psalms that we're going to see today. 00:07:51.619 --> 00:08:03.439 When Psalm 2 was sung, the people of God were reminded of how God made a covenant with David and his descendants to be kings in order to enable them to fulfill the promise that was made to Abraham. 00:08:04.039 --> 00:08:06.699 And that was to be a blessing to all nations. 00:08:07.779 --> 00:08:08.839 One commentator noted, 00:08:08.839 --> 00:08:34.860 We know from Acts that David is the author of this Psalm and that it is a royal Psalm, a Psalm of coronation. 00:08:34.860 --> 00:08:47.340 But the weight of this Psalm points us far beyond strictly a earthly king and far beyond that to the ultimate king, the king of kings, the king who reigns over everything. 00:08:48.180 --> 00:08:54.259 And so with that in mind today, with this understanding that Psalm 2 is pointing us to Jesus, 00:08:54.379 --> 00:09:00.159 I want to invite you to open up God's word with me and listen as we read these words. earth set themselves and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against his anointed, saying, 00:09:17.559 --> 00:09:22.459 Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their courts from us. 00:09:22.460 --> 00:09:26.200 He who sits on the throne laughs. 00:09:26.540 --> 00:09:28.780 He who sits in the heavens laughs. 00:09:28.780 --> 00:09:31.280 The Lord holds them in derision. 00:11:31.239 --> 00:11:34.699 And there are a few observations that I want to bring our attention to today. 00:11:34.819 --> 00:11:39.139 That I think will give us some clarity in answering this question. 00:11:39.139 --> 00:11:43.279 And one of the things that we clearly see in this passage is this. 00:11:44.139 --> 00:11:49.480 The foolishness of placing our hope in the things or people of this world. 00:11:50.199 --> 00:11:57.059 The foolishness of placing our hope in the things or in the people of this world. 00:11:57.580 --> 00:12:00.500 You see the purpose of this psalm is to convince us. 00:12:00.799 --> 00:12:04.519 That it is foolish and futile to fight against Christ. 00:12:04.519 --> 00:12:12.220 This purpose of this psalm is reminding us of the foolishness and the futility of fighting against Christ. 00:12:12.679 --> 00:12:18.419 In the first few verses we see this attempt to turn from Christ to the kings of this world. 00:12:18.799 --> 00:12:20.079 And we read this. 00:12:20.559 --> 00:12:25.519 And I want you to hear the confusion in David's mind as he writes these words. 00:12:25.579 --> 00:12:25.879 He says, 00:12:25.879 --> 00:12:51.720 Here in this psalm, David is amazed that anyone would be so foolish as to try to set their minds against God. 00:12:51.720 --> 00:12:53.220 It's like he's saying, 00:12:53.700 --> 00:12:55.379 Do they know they can't win? 00:12:55.860 --> 00:12:58.500 Don't they realize that it is vain to do this? 00:12:58.879 --> 00:13:00.680 Why are they raging? 00:13:01.120 --> 00:13:03.139 Why are they plotting against God? 00:13:03.379 --> 00:13:05.200 Don't they know that it's pointless? 00:13:06.040 --> 00:13:11.060 Don't they know that one day every knee will bow in heaven, on earth, and under the earth, 00:13:11.279 --> 00:13:14.779 and declare that Jesus is Lord to the glory of God the Father? 00:13:14.779 --> 00:13:18.220 Don't they know this is the direction that everything is heading? 00:13:19.120 --> 00:13:19.699 And so he's saying, 00:13:20.039 --> 00:13:22.600 Don't they realize that it's pointless to do this? 00:13:23.139 --> 00:13:27.699 Don't they realize that it's foolish to turn from God? 00:13:28.059 --> 00:13:35.439 The word translated as plot here in verse 1 is the same word that's translated as meditate in chapter 1 verse 2 00:13:35.439 --> 00:13:38.819 where it says, where it talks about the wise meditate. 00:13:39.059 --> 00:13:42.199 They utter, they speak about God's word. 00:13:42.200 --> 00:13:48.600 And then here, while the wicked, they meditate, they utter, they speak about rebellion. 00:13:49.300 --> 00:13:51.620 One meditates on God's law. 00:13:51.780 --> 00:13:55.259 One constantly thinks about rebelling against God. 00:13:56.320 --> 00:13:59.400 This psalm was written at a specific time and place, 00:13:59.800 --> 00:14:03.920 but the scope of this psalm is far bigger than in its reach. 00:14:04.360 --> 00:14:10.379 It doesn't take long to realize that the rebellion is not limited here to a specific country or a continent, 00:14:10.379 --> 00:14:14.659 but that all nations and all peoples are in this together. 00:14:15.360 --> 00:14:17.820 James Johnson, he speaks of it this way. 00:14:17.939 --> 00:14:24.980 He says, this rebellion is worldwide because it is rooted in the sin nature we all inherited from Adam. 00:14:25.639 --> 00:14:31.340 He says, if you trek five days into the jungle, you will meet people who are set against God. 00:14:31.340 --> 00:14:38.259 If you ride the crowded subways of New York City, the people pushing by you are set against God. 00:14:38.360 --> 00:14:46.940 No matter where you go, no matter where you are, there are people who will find themselves in this category set against God. 00:14:47.639 --> 00:14:51.019 And so what we see is the foolishness of this. 00:14:51.019 --> 00:14:56.039 But who specifically does this passage say that they are fighting against? 00:14:56.720 --> 00:15:07.139 It says, the kings of the earth set themselves and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against his anointed. 00:15:07.860 --> 00:15:12.759 The word translated here as anointed in Hebrew is Messiah. 00:15:13.199 --> 00:15:15.639 And the Greek translation is Christ. 00:15:15.639 --> 00:15:24.860 And so what you begin to see is that those who are foolish are setting themselves against God and against Jesus. 00:15:25.799 --> 00:15:27.500 They're setting themselves against that. 00:15:27.580 --> 00:15:29.279 And this is a battle that they can't 00:15:52.980 Taking all of this into consideration, it is clear that the context of this psalm is far greater than the coordination of a single Jewish king. 00:15:53.480 --> 00:15:58.919 To apply this psalm strictly to an earthly king, even if you were to apply it to King David himself, 00:15:59.000 --> 00:16:06.019 would be like trying to put shoulder pads from an NFL lineman onto a newborn baby. 00:16:06.500 --> 00:16:07.539 It doesn't fit. 00:16:07.639 --> 00:16:09.019 It's far too big. 00:16:09.240 --> 00:16:11.879 It's far too great than this would allow. 00:16:11.879 --> 00:16:17.580 And so this psalm is far greater than simply being just for an earthly king. 00:16:17.700 --> 00:16:20.960 This psalm has a much greater reach than that. 00:16:21.320 --> 00:16:25.600 What we have here is a psalm fitting of a king who rules the world. 00:16:26.299 --> 00:16:28.679 And there is only one who fits that description. 00:16:29.179 --> 00:16:31.639 And that is King Jesus himself. 00:16:31.639 --> 00:16:38.139 And so when we say that it is foolish to place our hope in the things or people of this world, 00:16:38.340 --> 00:16:42.299 what we are saying, it is foolish to turn from Jesus. Verses 7 through 9 contain the words of God's anointed. 00:20:14.839 --> 00:20:17.059 He says, I will tell you a decree. 00:20:17.740 --> 00:20:20.940 He's saying what I'm about to tell you is mission field. 00:29:27.839 --> 00:29:30.480 You could go there and die, and ultimately know that he would. 00:29:30.480 --> 00:29:36.059 And he says, How much greater would it be for you to use that wisdom, your communication skills, your intellect, 00:29:36.279 --> 00:29:41.200 in a far greater way here to tell people to go, to share with people, to expound God's word? 00:29:41.400 -->
