chosen king of Israel, chosen by God, is on the run. 00:00:19.620 --> 00:00:24.719 He has been king in Jerusalem for many years, but now he is fleeing his capital city, 00:00:25.019 --> 00:00:28.940 not knowing if he will ever return or even if he will survive the week. 00:00:30.420 --> 00:00:34.079 His adult son, Absalom, has spent the last four years plotting 00:00:34.079 --> 00:00:38.600 and quietly winning over the hearts of many of the people of Israel, 00:00:38.920 --> 00:00:41.200 and now Absalom has made his move. 00:00:41.899 --> 00:00:46.019 He has assembled those loyal to him and declared himself king over the nation. 00:00:47.280 --> 00:00:52.260 He plans to kill his father David and establish his own rule. 00:00:54.260 --> 00:00:57.900 So David realizes the tide has turned against him very quickly. 00:00:57.899 --> 00:01:04.379 So he leaves Jerusalem that same day, not wanting to bring violence and destruction to his beloved city. 00:01:05.679 --> 00:01:09.060 And he takes his family and those who are still loyal to him, 00:01:09.739 --> 00:01:11.620 and he heads out into the wilderness. 00:01:14.299 --> 00:01:17.780 David is in the midst of losing absolutely everything. 00:01:17.780 --> 00:01:24.980 And one day he has gone from being king in comfort and peace to seeing everything slip away. 00:01:26.420 --> 00:01:34.900 His people, his kingship, his family, his security, and even maybe his own life. 00:01:34.900 --> 00:01:41.460 And it is that situation that inspires this psalm, Psalm 63. 00:01:41.700 --> 00:01:45.120 David wrote this psalm because of that experience, 00:01:45.360 --> 00:01:50.040 and that helps us see how this psalm connects to us today. 00:01:50.040 --> 00:01:57.160 If you are facing a situation of serious physical 00:02:32.500 --> 00:02:34.620 who want to see you go down in some way, 00:02:35.740 --> 00:02:41.879 or just in general, if you're in a situation where you don't feel like you have the resources 00:02:41.879 --> 00:02:45.560 or the capacity to handle this, that it's gone way beyond you, 00:02:45.639 --> 00:02:49.939 that you've lost everything that you were relying upon to deal with life. 00:02:50.979 --> 00:02:55.900 If you're in a situation like that, Psalm 63 is helpful for you and for me 00:02:55.900 --> 00:03:02.159 because David models for us confidence in God's unequaled sufficiency. 00:03:02.919 --> 00:03:08.019 David models in Psalm 63 confidence in God's unequaled sufficiency, 00:03:08.020 --> 00:03:10.760 and so Psalm 63, if we're going to follow David, 00:03:11.159 --> 00:03:17.000 is a call for us to cultivate our own confidence in God's unequaled sufficiency. 00:03:18.560 --> 00:03:22.120 Now I say we have to cultivate it because our confidence in 00:03:49.960 --> 00:03:53.480 So David models this confidence in God's unequaled sufficiency, 00:03:54.280 --> 00:03:56.879 and this Psalm has three stanzas, and so in this Psalm, 00:03:56.879 --> 00:04:01.740 David expresses his confidence in God's unequaled sufficiency in three ways. 00:04:01.840 --> 00:04:06.219 Three ways that God is sufficient for David, and that He is sufficient for us. worth for me now? 00:05:07.399 --> 00:05:11.339 And then begun planning and strategizing as if he was all on his own. 00:05:13.420 --> 00:05:14.959 But that's not how he responds. 00:05:14.959 --> for you. 00:05:28.699 --> 00:05:30.899 My flesh faints for you, 00:05:31.219 --> 00:05:34.719 as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. 00:05:36.639 --> 00:05:39.759 David is not willing yet to believe that God has abandoned him. 00:05:39.819 --> 00:05:42.759 He might feel like that is what happened, but he doesn't accept it yet. 00:05:42.759 --> 00:05:47.180 And so he's choosing to focus on God as his most urgent need. 00:05:48.339 --> 00:05:50.339 You can hear the desperation in these verses. 00:05:50.500 --> 00:05:53.060 He is searching for God, and the word that he used here, 00:05:53.159 --> 00:05:56.399 earnestly seeking for God is a restless, desperate, 00:05:56.599 --> 00:05:59.259 not going to give up kind of search, back and forth, back and forth. 00:05:59.519 --> 00:06:00.219 Got to find him. 00:06:00.300 --> 00:06:00.879 Got to find him. 00:06:00.899 --> 00:06:01.379 Where is he? 00:06:03.219 --> 00:06:08.259 And what's driving this search is his compelling need for God that must be satisfied. 00:06:08.259 --> 00:06:11.300 He is thirsting and fainting for God, he says, 00:06:11.360 --> 00:06:14.000 like a man in a desert is desperate for water. 00:06:14.740 --> 00:06:17.879 When you're in the desert, water is your number one priority. 00:06:18.019 --> 00:06:20.459 You're constantly losing water through sweat. 00:06:20.579 --> 00:06:24.000 You're facing the heat of the sun on you that's baking your skin. 00:06:24.360 --> 00:06:27.879 And as you lose your hydration, your cells begin to contract. 00:06:30.099 --> 00:06:33.279 David says he's like that in a desert where there isn't any water. 00:06:33.279 --> 00:06:36.799 His soul is beginning to contract for lack of God. 00:06:38.019 --> 00:06:41.379 But just like you said, it's like I'm in a desert where there is no water. 00:06:41.479 --> 00:06:44.479 It seems like God is nowhere to be found right now for David. 00:06:46.059 --> 00:06:50.359 And the intentional poetic irony here is that David is actually physically 00:06:50.359 --> 00:06:52.079 in the wilderness right now. 00:06:52.719 --> 00:06:57.439 This isn't just a rhetorical, spiritualistic, overdramatic flourish on David's part. 00:06:57.839 --> 00:07:02.259 Food and water are real needs for him and for those around him right now. 00:07:02.259 --> 00:07:05.379 But it's not food and water that he's most concerned with. 00:07:06.579 --> 00:07:10.439 He's most concerned to find the God who seems to have abandoned him 00:07:10.439 --> 00:07:14.759 because he believes that God is worth it. 00:07:15.420 --> 00:07:18.219 He's worth that kind of search, that kind of desperation, 00:07:18.719 --> 00:07:23.579 that kind of prioritization that puts him above even immediate physical needs. 00:07:25.300 --> 00:07:27.860 God feels so distant and absent right now, 00:07:27.899 --> 00:07:31.079 and it may very well be that this situation is straight from God's hand. 00:07:31.079 --> 00:07:35.139 But instead of all that pushing David to put his confidence in something else, 00:07:35.240 --> 00:07:38.560 it actually drives him to be even more desperate for God. 00:07:39.959 --> 00:07:46.240 So in Psalm 63, he's reorienting himself away from the immediate tactical and survival concerns 00:07:46.240 --> 00:07:50.219 and putting his confidence away from military planning and physical strength 00:07:50.219 --> 00:07:51.519 and putting it in God. 00:07:51.519 --> 00:07:58.680 Even when God doesn't seem to be coming through for him right now, 00:07:59.279 --> 00:08:01.759 because he says God is worth it. 00:08:03.219 --> 00:08:05.579 But this confidence that David has in God, 00:08:05.680 --> 00:08:08.419 this desperation for God is not new for David. 00:08:09.199 --> 00:08:11.680 He isn't just turning to God because he's in trouble right now. 00:08:11.759 --> 00:08:13.199 This isn't a foxhole conversion. 00:08:13.680 --> 00:08:16.539 This is the consistent pattern and practice of David's life. 00:08:16.540 --> 00:08:18.760 Verse 2, David says, 00:08:18.920 --> 00:08:21.600 So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, 00:08:22.600 --> 00:08:24.500 beholding your power and glory. 00:08:26.300 --> 00:08:30.980 This is not the first time David has felt this kind of desperation for God. 00:08:31.520 --> 00:08:34.340 This is not the first time he has searched for God. 00:08:34.759 --> 00:08:37.440 This same hunger and thirst that he has now 00:08:37.440 --> 00:08:40.000 is the hunger and thirst that has driven him in the past 00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:43.899 in happier and more comfortable times to the sanctuary in Jerusalem, 00:08:43.899 --> 00:08:47.000 to see God's power and glory and to praise him. 00:08:48.639 --> 00:08:52.279 So David's confidence that God is worth more than any physical provision 00:08:52.279 --> 00:08:55.399 has been cultivated throughout his life. 00:08:55.819 --> 00:08:57.860 And this psalm, in the midst of so much danger, 00:08:58.000 --> 00:09:02.860 is just a natural continuation of what David's life has been like in times of peace. 00:09:04.220 --> 00:09:07.279 David has always been seeking God. 00:09:07.279 --> 00:09:12.959 And --> 00:10:03.000 In your name I will lift up my hands. 00:10:03.000 --> 00:10:07.259 In case the first few verses were just a little too poetic, 00:10:07.620 --> 00:10:09.039 a little too metaphorical, 00:10:09.100 --> 00:10:10.899 in case David hasn't been clear enough yet 00:10:10.899 --> 00:10:12.700 about his priorities in this situation, 00:10:13.039 --> 00:10:13.980 he says it plainly. 00:10:14.360 --> 00:10:18.320 God's love, God's steadfast, covenantal, relational, 00:10:18.799 --> 00:10:22.120 unfailing love is worth more to him than his very life. 00:10:23.460 --> 00:10:32.960 --> 00:10:35.480 is that they can seem just kind of like 00:10:35.480 --> 00:10:39.139 spiritualistic poems disconnected from reality, 00:10:39.520 --> 00:10:43.180 maybe written by monks who are out in a monastery 00:10:43.180 --> 00:10:44.180 somewhere in the mountains 00:10:44.180 --> 00:10:46.100 who spend all their time fasting and praying. 00:10:47.280 --> 00:10:48.600 But it's the exact opposite. 00:10:48.740 --> 00:10:50.780 The psalms were written by people 00:10:50.780 --> 00:10:52.220 in the midst of life, 00:10:52.320 --> 00:10:53.780 in the midst of challenging situations, 00:10:53.779 --> 00:10:56.480 and they are never overdramatic. 00:10:56.679 --> 00:10:58.059 They are never overly spiritual. 00:10:58.240 --> 00:11:01.079 They are always exactly what people think 00:11:01.079 --> 00:11:02.539 and what they mean and what they need 00:11:02.539 --> 00:11:05.360 in the midst of the most challenging situations in life. 00:11:06.079 --> 00:11:06.919 So when David says, 00:11:07.159 --> 00:11:08.959 your steadfast love is better than life, 00:11:09.019 --> 00:11:11.659 he means it because he knows his life may be about to end. 00:11:11.659 -->
