Amen. 00:02:28.519 --> 00:02:33.699 So, March the 10th, 1748, many, many years ago. 00:02:34.500 --> 00:02:42.320 A British merchant ship by the name of the Greyhound was sailing from Sierra Leone in Africa to Portsmouth in England. 00:02:42.540 --> 00:02:45.180 And it came upon a violent storm. 00:02:45.920 --> 00:02:49.540 And aboard that ship was a young man, 23-year-old John Newton. 00:02:49.740 --> 00:02:51.080 He was a sailor on that ship. 00:02:51.840 --> 00:02:57.480 And the storm was, heavy seas were tearing parts of the ship away. 00:02:57.700 --> 00:03:01.200 John Newton was woken up in the middle of the night with someone crying out, 00:03:01.199 --> 00:03:02.019 She's sinking. 00:03:02.739 --> 00:03:07.819 And so, all hands on deck, they all run upstairs to save the ship. 00:03:08.379 --> 00:03:13.699 And John Newton was immediately told to go downstairs, grab a knife to cut the ropes and the sails. 00:03:14.139 --> 00:03:21.280 As he turns to go downstairs, a wave comes and knocks the man standing next to him overboard, never to be seen again. 00:03:21.280 --> 00:03:23.039 John Newton writes, 00:03:23.039 --> 00:03:29.219 The sea had torn away the upper timbers on one side and made the ship a mere wreck in a few minutes. 00:03:29.780 --> 00:03:34.580 Taking all the circumstances into account, it's miraculous that any of us survived. 00:03:34.580 --> 00:03:42.720 And so, for the next couple of hours, John Newton and his crew are pumping water out of the ship trying to survive. 00:03:42.840 --> 00:03:45.000 And after 11 hours of doing that, they're exhausted. 00:03:45.620 --> 00:03:47.420 And John Newton cries out, he says, 00:03:47.840 --> 00:03:51.220 If this will not do, the Lord have mercy upon us all. 00:03:52.100 --> 00:03:54.840 And immediately, two things happen. 00:03:55.800 --> 00:03:59.180 Firstly, he's instantly struck by his own words. 00:04:00.140 --> 00:04:00.920 This is what he writes. 00:04:00.919 --> 00:04:07.659 This thought, spoken without much reflection, was the first desire for mercy I had breathed in many years. 00:04:08.119 --> 00:04:09.539 It instantly came to me. 00:04:09.799 --> 00:04:11.539 What mercy can there be for me? 00:04:11.899 --> 00:04:16.479 I thought there never was or ever could be such a terrible sinner as myself. 00:04:16.879 --> 00:04:19.339 My sins were too great to be forgiven. 00:04:20.240 --> 00:04:23.259 Secondly, the storm starts to subside. 00:04:23.979 --> 00:04:27.560 Over the next few hours, the wind quietens down. 00:04:28.079 --> 00:04:29.740 The waves start to subside. 00:04:29.740 --> 00:04:37.900 And for the next four weeks, this ship, broken as it is, hobbles along the coast until they find a port in Northern Ireland where they dock. 00:04:38.620 --> 00:04:43.319 For the rest of his life, John Newton would remember the 10th of March, 1748. 00:04:43.500 --> 00:04:49.340 And would remember this day, the day that God had saved him from a certain death, but also saved his soul. 00:04:49.500 --> 00:04:50.720 He writes this many years later. 00:04:50.720 --> 00:04:55.620 On that day, the Lord sent from on high and delivered me out of deep had such a dramatic experience. 00:05:07.120 --> 00:05:10.440 But I wonder, what is the most dramatic experience you've had in your life? 00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:13.520 What have you been rescued from or saved from? 00:05:13.519 --> 00:05:18.599 Christmas Day, 1994, I was swimming in the sea and I had to be rescued by lifeguards. 00:05:18.919 --> 00:05:20.079 A rip current was taking me out. 00:05:20.359 --> 00:05:22.539 That's about as far as dramatic as I've ever got. 00:05:22.839 --> 00:05:23.519 What about you? 00:05:24.319 --> 00:05:27.519 What dramatic experience have you had? 00:05:28.319 --> 00:05:29.539 How did you come out of it? 00:05:30.120 --> 00:05:32.199 Who rescued you or got you through? 00:05:32.319 --> 00:05:34.319 And how did it change your life? 00:05:34.319 --> 00:05:41.459 At the heart of Christianity is the idea of rescue, of salvation. 00:05:42.360 --> 00:05:47.439 As we saw last week, our sin leads us into a storm, a storm of our own making. 00:05:48.019 --> 00:05:55.819 And Christianity is all about the great rescue plan, the salvation plan that God has put in place to rescue us from the storms of our own making. 00:05:55.819 --> 00:06:04.360 But this is a rescue that we could not organize or orchestrate ourselves and certainly could not accomplish on our own. 00:06:04.800 --> 00:06:11.860 At the heart of Christianity is the idea that those that have been rescued, those that have been saved, are no better than anyone else. 00:06:12.219 --> 00:06:17.420 They're not smarter, more intelligent, more righteous, more deserving than anyone else. 00:06:17.420 --> 00:06:25.579 But those who, like Jonah, like John Newton, have been rescued from a deadly storm from which we could not save ourselves. 00:06:26.579 --> 00:06:29.120 That's what Jonah 2 wants to show us. 00:06:29.500 --> 00:06:30.800 That's what we're going to see today. 00:06:31.399 --> 00:06:43.579 And friends, the depth to which we understand or grasp this truth is the degree to which our Christian faith, for those of us that are Christians, will be life-transforming and deeply soul-satisfying. 00:06:44.139 --> 00:06:52.019 Friends, if there's anything to understand about Christianity at all, if our faith is going to be life-transforming and the power of Christianity is going to change us, 00:06:52.019 --> 00:06:56.060 we need to appreciate the desperate situation from which we were saved. 00:06:56.519 --> 00:07:00.219 We need to understand our utter inability to save or rescue ourselves. 00:07:00.799 --> 00:07:03.620 And we need to see just how great God's rescue plan is. 00:07:04.120 --> 00:07:07.199 And so that's what we see in Jonah 2 in his prayer. 00:07:07.759 --> 00:07:09.959 Now, many of us will know the story of Jonah. 00:07:10.099 --> 00:07:11.399 Remember, Jonah is a prophet. 00:07:11.599 --> 00:07:12.819 He's meant to represent God. 00:07:13.039 --> 00:07:16.079 But he runs away from the God that he's meant to be representing. 00:07:16.079 --> 00:07:22.419 And he runs instead of going east to Nineveh, he goes west down to Tarshish on the ship. 00:07:23.019 --> 00:07:26.339 And by running away from God, he runs into a mighty storm. 00:07:26.779 --> 00:07:28.740 The ship that he's on is about to break up. 00:07:28.839 --> 00:07:32.579 And he says to the sailors, the only way you can save yourselves is throw me overboard. 00:07:33.039 --> 00:07:34.479 They don't think that's a good idea. 00:07:34.560 --> 00:07:35.919 So they try and row harder. 00:07:36.180 --> 00:07:37.680 But their efforts get nowhere. 00:07:37.680 --> 00:07:41.240 And so eventually they conclude, our only hope is to do what he says. 00:07:41.699 --> 00:07:43.400 And they hurl Jonah overboard. 00:07:43.939 --> 00:07:50.060 And immediately the seas are calm and peace is restored. 00:07:50.879 --> 00:07:53.519 But Jonah sinks to the bottom of the sea. 00:07:54.160 --> 00:07:58.420 And as you know, at this point, God sends a ginormous fish, probably some kind of whale, 00:07:59.019 --> 00:08:02.079 which swallows him and in doing so saves his life. 00:08:02.819 --> 00:08:04.060 Now, brief pause. 00:08:04.300 --> 00:08:06.560 What should we do with the fish part, right? 00:08:06.560 --> 00:08:10.000 Because, let's be honest, this is unusual. 00:08:10.780 --> 00:08:12.839 Not too many people get swallowed by whales. 00:08:12.920 --> 00:08:14.240 It does happen from time to time. 00:08:14.620 --> 00:08:18.399 Normally they are, you know, spat out straight away, regurgitated straight away. 00:08:18.459 --> 00:08:20.740 It happened in the seas just about a year ago. 00:08:21.100 --> 00:08:22.579 But this is pretty unusual. 00:08:23.259 --> 00:08:24.199 What do we do? 00:08:24.360 --> 00:08:26.079 Some people ask, did this really happen? 00:08:26.920 --> 00:08:28.860 Well, two brief thoughts. 00:08:29.779 --> 00:08:33.620 I want to encourage us not to discard the parts of the Bible 00:08:33.620 --> 00:08:37.379 too quickly that are unusual or difficult to understand. 00:08:37.779 --> 00:08:38.879 Two reasons for that. 00:08:39.000 --> 00:08:39.740 The first is this. 00:08:40.259 --> 00:08:45.580 There are often actually good reasons for believing the parts of the Bible 00:08:45.580 --> 00:08:47.340 that at first are hard to understand. 00:08:47.340 --> 00:08:51.720 Often with enough reading, enough research, enough thinking, talking to people, 00:08:51.920 --> 00:08:55.660 actually we find there's more reason to believe than first meets the eye. 00:08:56.100 --> 00:08:58.040 I think a good example of this is the empty tomb. 00:08:58.560 --> 00:08:59.820 Jesus rose from the dead. 00:09:00.420 --> 00:09:03.980 Now, normally people that are dead don't rise from the dead after three days. 00:09:03.980 --> 00:09:08.080 But actually if you investigate the historical evidence, look at the data, 00:09:08.240 --> 00:09:11.340 you'll see there's more than enough reason to believe this really happened. 00:09:11.580 --> 00:09:12.620 This is a fact of history. 00:09:12.980 --> 00:09:14.840 So don't discard it too quickly. 00:09:15.500 --> 00:09:16.360 Look into it. 00:09:16.420 --> anything from Scripture which is unusual or challenging 00:09:31.480 --> 00:09:36.840 will leave our faith anemic, shallow, and unsatisfying. 00:09:37.720 --> 00:09:38.960 What I mean by that is this. 00:09:39.300 --> 00:09:42.600 If your requirement for believing what the Bible says 00:09:42.600 --> 00:09:47.320 is that it must align or correspond with what you automatically already believe, 00:09:47.840 --> 00:09:52.620 you're going to disregard anything that is outside of your current experience. 00:09:53.300 --> 00:09:59.700 The God that you are left with is going to be very small, very shallow, very powerless. 00:09:59.700 --> 00:10:04.600 Outside of mystery, no room for mystery, no room for incomprehensibility. 00:10:05.160 --> 00:10:09.400 And you'll never experience the power of the God that is beyond time and space. 00:10:10.040 --> 00:10:10.660 Does that make sense? 00:10:11.060 --> 00:10:17.400 So as we saw last week, if we do not fear, if we're not in awe of the God that is beyond our understanding, 00:10:17.940 --> 00:10:24.200 the God we'll be left with is safe, predictable, small, non-mysterious, 00:10:24.520 --> 00:10:28.580 actually comprehensible, and powerless to actually change our lives. 00:10:28.580 --> 00:10:31.840 Powerless to satisfy the deepest questions of our hearts. 00:10:32.800 --> 00:10:37.160 Unable to help us when we come face-to-face with the hardships and the realities of life. 00:10:37.820 --> 00:10:41.160 And so don't be too quick to discount the parts of Scripture that are unusual. 00:10:41.639 --> 00:10:44.340 And so in Jonah 2, actually at the end of 1, 00:10:44.740 --> 00:10:51.200 God, as is his custom, brings about a very unusual means of rescuing and saving Jonah from a certain death. 00:10:51.200 --> 00:10:54.080 And there in the depths, God rescues Jonah. 00:10:54.180 --> 00:10:58.520 And having encountered God's saving grace, Jonah prays this prayer of thanksgiving. 00:10:58.700 --> 00:11:00.320 And so let's look at it together. 00:11:00.440 --> 00:11:09.400 In this prayer, Jonah shows us two things that we all must grasp deeply if Christianity is going to make sense at all 00:11:09.400 --> 00:11:12.740 and if it's going to have any life-transforming power in our lives. 00:11:12.840 --> 00:11:14.060 Okay, two things we must grasp. 00:11:14.059 --> 00:11:15.839 Firstly, our true condition. 00:11:16.500 --> 00:11:20.519 Secondly, our spiritual insufficiency or our utter inability. 00:11:20.939 --> 00:11:24.000 Okay, our true condition and our inability to save ourselves. 00:11:24.099 --> 00:11:25.359 Let's dive in and look at that. 00:11:25.479 --> 00:11:27.359 So, firstly, our true condition. 00:11:28.359 --> 00:11:33.659 In this prayer, Jonah acknowledges that his situation is one of his own making. 00:11:34.259 --> 00:11:38.639 Now, it may not be obvious at first, but look at the language that he uses here. 00:11:38.639 --> 00:11:45.059 Having been rescued by the God that he's tried to run away from, Jonah comes to the realization he's not just unlucky. 00:11:45.720 --> 00:11:46.639 He's under judgment. 00:11:47.939 --> 00:11:51.240 Jonah is not in the situation he's in because of his circumstances. 00:11:51.240 --> 00:11:52.720 He's there because of his sin. 00:11:53.720 --> 00:11:58.340 And the reason that he's drowning is not just unfortunate circumstances. 00:11:58.500 --> 00:11:59.600 Actually, it's his rebellion. 00:11:59.740 --> 00:12:00.419 Look at what he says here. 00:12:00.439 --> 00:12:02.059 Look at how he describes himself in his prayer. 00:12:02.139 --> 00:12:02.860 Look at verse 2. 00:12:03.279 --> 00:12:03.659 He says, 00:12:03.659 --> 00:12:13.439 Sheol is the Old Testament word for the place where the dead go. 00:12:14.159 --> 00:12:16.980 But it's not just the generic place of the dead. 00:12:17.139 --> 00:12:19.659 It's kind of a place of divine judgment. 00:12:19.939 --> 00:12:22.000 It's a place of the morally corrupt. 00:12:22.459 --> 00:12:24.839 It's the place you don't want to go once you die. 00:12:25.379 --> 00:12:25.839 And Jonah says, 00:12:25.839 --> 00:12:28.759 Out of that place, out of the belly of Sheol, I cried out to you. 00:12:28.879 --> 00:12:31.299 Jonah realizes he's not in a good place. 00:12:31.699 --> 00:12:32.399 Look at verse 3. 00:12:32.399 --> 00:12:33.159 He says, 00:12:33.519 --> 00:12:36.319 You cast me into the depths of the heart of the sea. 00:12:36.779 --> 00:12:39.159 Your waves and billows passed out over me. 00:12:39.579 --> 00:12:41.639 It's not just the sailors that threw Jonah in here. 00:12:41.879 --> 00:12:44.480 It's not just the storm that caused him into the depths of the sea. 00:12:44.759 --> 00:12:51.699 He realizes God is the one who's done this because he's under the judgment of the sovereign God that he's been trying to run away from. 00:12:53.659 --> 00:12:54.419 Verse 4. 00:12:54.959 --> 00:12:55.240 He says, 00:12:55.299 --> 00:12:58.179 I'm driven away from your sight, from your presence. 00:12:58.620 --> 00:12:59.899 What does that make you think of? 00:12:59.899 --> 00:13:04.459 Where else in the Old Testament are God's people driven from his presence? 00:13:05.459 --> 00:13:08.759 Remember in Genesis chapter 3, Adam and Eve sinned grievously. 00:13:09.459 --> 00:13:11.620 And God drives them out of the Garden of Eden. 00:13:11.740 --> 00:13:12.579 Same word in Hebrew. 00:13:13.139 --> 00:13:15.939 Out of his presence as a result of their sin. 00:13:15.940 --> 00:13:20.760 Jonah is coming to the realization that actually it's his sin. 00:13:20.840 --> 00:13:23.920 It's his running away from God that's caused him this situation. 00:13:24.080 --> 00:13:28.960 If you know the story of Jonah, in many ways this is the turning point of the story. 00:13:29.100 --> 00:13:30.880 After this, Jonah is going to go to Nineveh. 00:13:31.100 --> 00:13:32.640 This is the turning point of his life. 00:13:32.780 --> 00:13:37.220 Now, Jonah is not the perfect example of a wonderful Christian after this. 00:13:37.400 --> 00:13:39.740 He still has a lot of stuff to work through. 00:13:39.980 --> 00:13:40.980 As do we all. 00:13:40.980 --> 00:13:47.399 But this point, it seems like the turning point when God gets a hold of him and turns him around. 00:13:48.620 --> 00:13:52.379 Here, Jonah comes face to face with his depravity, with his lostness. 00:13:52.740 --> 00:13:55.840 The fact that he is a sinner in the hands of a sovereign God, 00:13:56.200 --> 00:13:58.940 deserving of the watery grave in which he finds himself. 00:13:59.879 --> 00:14:02.399 And having come to this place, his life begins to turn around. 00:14:02.539 --> 00:14:06.360 And Jonah's prayer is a confession of his sin against God. 00:14:06.360 --> 00:14:12.899 Friends, I wonder how do you feel about confessing sin and acknowledging your lostness? 00:14:13.940 --> 00:14:19.039 How do you feel about acknowledging the fact that you and I have sinned? 00:14:19.580 --> 00:14:23.840 The Bible tells us again and again that this is where redemption starts. 00:14:24.440 --> 00:14:26.080 This is where healing begins. 00:14:26.720 --> 00:14:29.560 This is the place where we can find restoration. 00:14:30.039 --> 00:14:31.620 That healing and restoration begins. 00:14:31.620 --> 00:14:36.440 That the path to salvation begins with acknowledging the depth and the extent of our sin. 00:14:37.299 --> 00:14:38.779 You may remember King David. 00:14:38.879 --> 00:14:41.519 Remember David in the Old Testament, the greatest king of the Old Testament. 00:14:41.879 --> 00:14:42.820 He sins grievously. 00:14:43.200 --> 00:14:45.000 He has an affair with another man's wife. 00:14:45.379 --> 00:14:46.360 She falls pregnant. 00:14:46.480 --> 00:14:49.860 In order to cover up his steps, he has her husband killed. 00:14:50.159 --> 00:14:52.279 So that the husband can't say, it's not my baby. 00:14:52.659 --> 00:14:55.940 So he has an affair, calls her to be pregnant, kills her husband. 00:14:56.779 --> 00:14:59.279 He tries to cover his steps, but he can't cover up his steps. 00:14:59.279 --> 00:15:00.720 And he's confronted by his sin. 00:15:00.720 --> 00:15:02.740 And how does David respond? 00:15:03.320 --> 00:15:07.060 Does David say, I'm a victim of my circumstances. 00:15:07.420 --> 00:15:07.980 It's not Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am the foremost. 00:15:58.519 --> 00:16:00.440 But I receive mercy for this reason. 00:16:00.779 --> 00:16:05.799 That in me, as the foremost of sinners, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience. 00:16:06.220 --> 00:16:08.360 As an example to those who were to believe in him. 00:16:09.080 --> 00:16:10.159 Friends, think of John Newton. good kid, 00:23:26.519 --> 00:23:27.799 And I thought, 00:23:28.019 --> 00:23:29.879 That made me a great person, 00:23:30.359 --> 00:23:32.319 And someone that God would love to save, 00:23:32.319
