00:00:24.760 But I just want to remind you, the Sermon on the Mount is the manifesto of King Jesus. 00:00:24.760 --> 00:00:34.500 Our King is publicly declaring to His citizens who we are and how we are to live. 00:00:36.939 --> 00:00:43.100 And so, becoming a citizen of the Kingdom begins with coming to terms with your spiritual bankruptcy. 00:00:43.380 --> 00:00:47.500 Blessed are those who are poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. 00:00:47.500 --> 00:00:54.680 And so when we come to terms with our spiritual bankruptcy before God, our sinfulness, our debt, 00:00:54.759 --> 00:01:07.560 spiritual debt before God, we realize that the only way to have this debt paid off is if God Himself is generous and pays our debt for us. 00:01:08.560 --> 00:01:16.000 And as we know that God's debt relief program is not a program in which we kind of work our way out of debt. 00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:24.400 His debt relief program is a person, Jesus, who paid our debt in full. while there. 00:02:42.879 --> 00:02:44.319 And she was a bit eccentric. 00:02:45.000 --> 00:02:46.959 She was, after all, an art major. 00:02:50.840 --> 00:02:55.620 But what you can't deny is the work that God did in her. 00:02:55.620 --> 00:02:58.280 It was a radical change in her life. 00:02:59.740 --> 00:03:01.400 And I remember something. 00:03:01.520 --> 00:03:02.539 I'll never forget it. 00:03:03.219 --> 00:03:09.000 Every year at about the same time, Diane would remember her conversion. 00:03:10.240 --> 00:03:13.259 And she would wear all black on that day. 00:03:14.400 --> 00:03:17.180 And so you'd see her walking around campus dressed in black. 00:03:18.640 --> 00:03:22.960 And it was her way of mourning her sins against God. 00:03:22.960 --> 00:03:28.080 And remembering the great forgiveness she had received in Christ. 00:03:29.640 --> 00:03:34.240 Her mourning, her sin against God was the starting point. 00:03:35.140 --> 00:03:41.360 But it always ended with her being comforted in Christ. 00:03:42.920 --> 00:03:46.360 We're going to take our cues from Diane, but more so from Jesus. 00:03:46.360 --> 00:03:52.620 If you're a Christian, if you're a even though you've been justified by His grace, He's still sin. 00:04:05.280 --> 00:04:11.780 And so we're going to be dealing with our sin all the way until we die or until Jesus returns. Our godly sorrow over our sin will lead us to the blessed comfort offered to us in Christ alone. 00:04:30.019 --> 00:04:36.959 So this morning, make no question, I'm going to call you by God's Word to mourn over your sin. 00:04:36.959 --> 00:04:45.939 But, ultimately, the call will be to find your comfort in Christ. 00:04:46.959 --> 00:04:52.120 The way to find comfort in Christ is to go through mourning your sin. 00:04:52.939 --> 00:04:55.899 So this morning, I'm going to have two main points. 00:04:56.159 --> 00:04:58.759 First is, mourn your sin against God. 00:04:59.659 --> 00:05:04.259 And then second, find your comfort in Christ alone. 00:05:04.259 --> 00:05:11.719 The call to mourn your sin is ultimately a call to find your comfort in Christ. 00:05:13.159 --> 00:05:17.659 So would you now look back at Matthew 5, verse 4. 00:05:19.279 --> 00:05:22.839 Blessed are those who mourn. 00:05:24.599 --> 00:05:26.959 The first thing you need to realize about this, 00:05:27.319 --> 00:05:30.819 blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 00:05:30.819 --> 00:05:43.040 The call to mourn is a condition to experience the blessing Jesus is talking about. 00:05:44.120 --> 00:05:46.759 Now, when you read this, blessed are those who mourn, 00:05:46.819 --> 00:05:49.100 I don't know about you, but it sounds a bit odd. 00:05:49.300 --> 00:05:52.039 It sounds a bit weird. 00:06:01.819 --> 00:06:04.000 But what you need to understand is, 00:06:04.620 --> 00:06:08.800 it's the entire verse we need to understand this mourning in. 00:06:09.759 --> 00:06:14.740 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 00:06:15.740 --> 00:06:21.060 Mourning is a condition that must be met in order to receive God's comfort. 00:06:21.060 --> 00:06:25.839 So what I'm trying to tell you is this. 00:06:26.939 --> 00:06:32.139 The mourning Jesus is talking about, the grief, that's not the blessing. 00:06:33.160 --> 00:06:37.379 But it's necessary in order to about. 00:06:58.459 --> 00:06:59.899 He's talking about a sadness. 00:07:01.500 --> 00:07:03.240 He's talking about a grief. 00:07:04.379 --> 00:07:06.659 One commentator talked about it this way. 00:07:07.379 --> 00:07:11.899 That this mourning is the emotional counterpart to being poor in spirit. 00:07:11.899 --> 00:07:14.419 It's something that we feel. 00:07:18.439 --> 00:07:22.599 When we think about mourning, I'm guessing you think about what I think about, 00:07:22.699 --> 00:07:23.479 someone dying. 00:07:24.839 --> 00:07:26.719 Mourning the death of a loved one. 00:07:27.879 --> 00:07:29.919 And I'll never forget the day my grandfather died. 00:07:30.500 --> 00:07:31.379 Never forget it. 00:07:31.819 --> 00:07:33.459 It was back in 2000. 00:07:34.620 --> 00:07:38.959 And what I'll never forget about it is how my grandmother responded. 00:07:38.959 --> 00:07:43.719 My grandparents had been married over 50 years. 00:07:45.139 --> 00:07:50.279 And the moment my grandfather died, they moved him to a gurney. 00:07:51.060 --> 00:07:52.219 He was in his home. 00:07:53.539 --> 00:07:58.419 And what I'll never forget is watching my grandmother bathe my grandfather's body. most is a teardrop at the end of her nose 00:08:28.899 --> 00:08:35.740 as she tenderly touched her dead husband's body. 00:08:39.500 --> 00:08:41.759 Her mourning, my grandmother's mourning, 00:08:42.500 --> 00:08:44.299 was an all-consuming mourning. 00:08:45.360 --> 00:08:46.419 It took over. 00:08:46.419 --> 00:08:50.299 The reason why I tell you that story is this. 00:08:51.199 --> 00:08:53.679 The mourning that Jesus is talking about, 00:08:54.439 --> 00:08:56.759 that word translated mourn 00:08:56.759 --> 00:09:02.399 is the strongest Greek word for grief. 00:09:03.219 --> 00:09:04.120 The strongest. 00:09:06.259 --> 00:09:07.979 It's a grief that takes over. 00:09:09.839 --> 00:09:12.360 It's a grief that says all things stop. 00:09:12.620 --> 00:09:13.879 This has got to be dealt with. 00:09:13.879 --> 00:09:21.519 Jesus chose this word for a reason. 00:09:23.860 --> 00:09:26.460 When we mourn a loved one, it's serious. 00:09:28.580 --> 00:09:32.200 When we sin against God, it is serious. 00:09:34.580 --> 00:09:36.879 So this mourning that Jesus is talking about, 00:09:37.000 --> 00:09:41.379 he's not talking about bereavement of someone's loss. 00:09:41.379 --> 00:09:46.720 What he's talking about is an intense grief 00:09:46.720 --> 00:09:50.519 over sinning against God. 00:09:52.539 --> 00:09:54.759 John Stott said it this way, 00:09:54.860 --> 00:10:10.879 Do you remember what it was? 00:10:10.879 --> 00:10:15.320 Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 00:10:17.620 --> 00:10:20.019 The mourning of Matthew 5.4 00:10:20.019 --> 00:10:22.220 is an intense grief 00:10:22.220 --> 00:10:27.100 over our sin against God. 00:10:29.659 --> 00:10:31.399 Feeling deep sadness 00:10:31.399 --> 00:10:34.480 for sinning against our holy God. 00:10:34.539 --> 00:10:36.960 Now, think about it directionally. 00:10:36.960 --> 00:10:37.960 This is a God word sorrow. 00:10:37.960 --> 00:10:40.960 This is a God word sorrow. 00:10:44.960 --> 00:10:47.440 The Apostle Paul talks about this 00:10:47.440 --> 00:10:49.860 as a godly sorrow. 00:10:50.920 --> 00:10:52.100 A godly grief. 00:10:52.240 --> 00:10:53.600 In 2 Corinthians 7, 00:10:54.040 --> 00:10:55.360 in this godly sorrow, 00:10:55.500 --> 00:10:56.519 this godly grief 00:10:56.519 --> 00:10:58.320 leads to repentance. 00:11:01.320 --> 00:11:03.460 He talks about a different kind of grief 00:11:03.460 --> 00:11:04.540 in that passage as well. 00:11:04.539 --> 00:11:06.699 a worldly sorrow. 00:11:06.699 --> 00:11:10.059 And it doesn't lead to repentance. I sinned. 00:15:19.020 --> 00:15:20.880 I mean, he sinned against at least 00:15:20.880 --> 00:15:22.120 three or four other people. 00:15:22.120 --> 00:15:24.279 But what he's saying is there --> 00:16:15.980 Jesus is talking about 00:16:15.980 --> 00:16:21.080 an acute awareness of your sin 00:16:21.080 --> 00:16:24.440 and a corresponding sadness over it 00:16:24.440 --> 00:16:25.920
