he was growing up as a child in the Alsace region of France, 00:00:45.980 --> 00:00:51.179 he used to go along to the football matches of his local team clutching his prayer book, 00:00:51.560 --> 00:00:58.000 and he'd stand on the touchline and he'd be praying desperately that his team would win. 00:00:58.119 --> 00:01:00.079 And then he says, 00:01:00.579 --> 00:01:05.259 In later years, I replaced the prayer book with good players, 00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:09.019 and being well prepared for the likelihood of winning. 00:01:09.819 --> 00:01:12.759 Reason instead of faith. 00:01:13.620 --> 00:01:18.560 And it was that last phrase, reason instead of faith, that really struck me. 00:01:18.560 --> 00:01:25.200 Now, I wouldn't say it was appropriate for us to be praying about the results of football matches. 00:01:26.100 --> 00:01:29.960 But I think Arsene Wenger maybe is speaking wider than that. 00:01:30.060 --> 00:01:34.299 And if he is, then he reflects something I think is quite a 00:03:34.580 --> 00:03:36.360 that was due to the first son. 00:03:36.439 --> 00:03:38.400 It was only a few minutes Esau was ahead of Jacob, 00:03:38.520 --> 00:03:41.939 but he was the first son, and he gave Jacob his birthright. 00:03:42.560 --> 00:03:46.700 And then Jacob tricked Isaac into giving him the father's blessing. 00:03:46.699 --> 00:03:50.219 And then he had to flee because Esau was out to kill him. 00:03:50.839 --> 00:03:53.739 And for the last few weeks, we've been thinking about the 20 years 00:03:53.739 --> 00:04:00.119 that he spent with his uncle Laban far away from his immediate family. 00:04:01.379 --> 00:04:05.579 Well, today he's come back, and he's come, in a sense, to face the music. 00:04:05.739 --> 00:04:07.699 He knows he's going to have to meet Esau, 00:04:07.699 --> 00:04:11.439 but he doesn't know what kind of response he's going to get. 00:04:12.119 --> 00:04:14.060 Is Esau still out to kill him, 00:04:14.479 --> 00:04:19.159 or is there a possibility that the two of them can be reconciled? 00:04:19.899 --> 00:04:21.399 As we go through this chapter, 00:04:22.039 --> 00:04:25.639 we see alternating Jacob interacting with God, 00:04:26.039 --> 00:04:28.219 and then Jacob trying to do things on his own, 00:04:28.419 --> 00:04:30.480 more interaction with God through the angels, 00:04:30.839 --> 00:04:32.579 Jacob trying to do things on his own, 00:04:32.579 --> 00:04:36.379 and then finally the decisive interaction with God, 00:04:36.479 --> 00:04:39.180 which we'll be looking at next Sunday. 00:04:39.639 --> 00:04:42.439 But there really is this tension in Jacob's mind, I think. 00:04:42.699 --> 00:04:45.159 I need to be saved from Esau. 00:04:45.539 --> 00:04:50.019 Do I do it myself, or do I rely on this, 00:05:14.939 --> 00:05:17.500 we're supposed to think back to how Jacob had left Canaan 00:05:17.500 --> 00:05:19.579 in the first place when he was fleeing from Esau, 00:05:19.779 --> 00:05:22.120 and he came to a place he called Bethel, 00:05:22.480 --> 00:05:24.159 and there he had an encounter with God. 00:05:24.159 --> 00:05:26.379 So angels going up and down the ladder to heaven, 00:05:26.599 --> 00:05:30.379 and he received promises from God. 00:05:31.139 --> 00:05:34.000 Now, I think as Jacob comes back to the land, 00:05:34.500 --> 00:05:35.719 this is God saying, 00:05:36.139 --> 00:05:37.839 I am still with you. 00:05:38.620 --> 00:05:41.959 I made promises to you in the past, 00:05:42.319 --> 00:05:45.779 and I am still there to honor these promises. 00:05:47.120 --> 00:05:49.039 And so Jacob gives the place a name, 00:05:49.099 --> 00:05:50.459 which means two camps. 00:05:50.959 --> 00:05:51.759 There's his camp. 00:05:51.819 --> 00:05:54.539 00:08:41.259 And if Jacob's in behind, then he's hoping he'll survive either way. 00:08:41.259 --> 00:08:42.759 That's the kind of man he was, 00:08:42.759 --> 00:08:46.419 and still had elements of Jacob's prayer. 00:09:07.000 --> 00:09:11.799 This is the first prayer that we really read of Jacob in the Bible. 00:09:11.799 --> 00:09:14.139 He refers to God previously, 00:09:14.579 --> 00:09:17.539 but it's the first time we see him actually coming before God 00:09:17.539 --> 00:09:19.639 and praying to him. 00:09:20.439 --> 00:09:22.559 And the four verses from verse 9 to 12, 00:09:22.639 --> 00:09:23.740 I've got one heading for each. 00:09:24.079 --> 00:09:25.979 Verse 9, I've said, is Jacob's premise. 00:09:26.099 --> 00:09:30.179 The premise is the basis on which he thinks he's able to come to God 00:09:30.179 --> 00:09:32.379 and ask for things from him. 00:09:33.159 --> 00:09:35.000 A part of the premise is a promise. 00:09:35.279 --> 00:09:38.299 It's what God said to him when he left the land. 00:09:38.299 --> 00:09:45.219 And the other part of it is a reminder of God's dealings with his ancestors. 00:09:46.459 --> 00:09:49.299 Jacob, at this point, isn't able to say, 00:09:49.819 --> 00:09:51.459 God is my God. 00:09:52.120 --> 00:09:54.859 He says he's the God of Abraham, his grandfather. 00:09:55.339 --> 00:09:57.959 He's the God of Isaac, his father. 00:09:58.859 --> 00:10:01.039 Perhaps it was after the end of this chapter 00:10:01.039 --> 00:10:02.699 that Jacob would have been able to say 00:10:02.700 --> 00:10:06.040 that God was his God as well. 00:10:06.640 --> 00:10:10.360 But he did feel he had a premise for coming to God. 00:10:11.160 --> 00:10:12.720 Can I say, if we are Christians, 00:10:12.900 --> 00:10:15.520 if we are 00:12:13.599 and what God has said to him that he will do. 00:12:13.719 --> 00:12:16.919 God has promised both prosperity in terms of having lots of descendants 00:12:16.919 --> 00:12:20.199 and prosperity in terms of wealth. 00:12:20.799 --> 00:12:22.639 It's been partially accomplished so far, 00:12:22.639 --> 00:12:24.480 but Jacob clings to that promise. 00:12:25.059 --> 00:12:26.620 And like for us too, 00:12:26.960 --> 00:12:29.179 it's good to cling to God's promises. 00:12:30.379 --> 00:12:32.580 If we don't know what to pray in a situation, 00:12:32.740 --> 00:12:35.519 think 00:12:46.120 So there's a lot in Jacob's prayer that we can learn from. 00:12:46.120 --> 00:12:51.399 But then he appears to kind of destroy it a bit by what he does next. 00:12:52.080 --> 00:12:54.340 He's not prepared to leave it with God 00:12:54.340 --> 00:12:57.060 and to let God work in the situation. 00:12:57.840 --> 00:12:59.460 Jacob has to make another plan. 00:13:00.360 --> 00:13:03.980 And this plan is to flood Esau with gifts. 00:13:04.639 --> 00:13:08.240 If you add up all the numbers of all the animals that Jonathan read about, 00:13:08.659 --> 00:13:13.019 there are 550 different animals in five different groups. 00:13:13.019 --> 00:13:17.799 And the idea is that Jacob sends them out in these groups one by one 00:13:17.799 --> 00:13:22.639 and he seems to be more and more generous to Esau as he approaches. 00:13:24.100 --> 00:13:28.559 Also, maybe an element that if Esau has all these animals coming along with him, 00:13:28.860 --> 00:13:32.579 then he's not going to be in such a good shape to make a surprise attack on Jacob. 00:13:33.100 --> 00:13:35.019 And if Jacob thinks he's at all hostile, 00:13:35.559 --> 00:13:37.740 there might be a chance to escape. 00:13:38.620 --> 00:13:42.199 But this is very much Jacob back to his old scheming. 00:13:43.019 --> 00:13:46.960 And I find it quite difficult to think that having prayed like that,
